IN South Louisiana, which used to be a French colony, many people grew up speaking French or still do, especially older poeple, and many of our last names end with "eaux". We often stylize things with "eaux" like "Geaux Tigers!". It never snows in south Louisiana so when it does people will spell it "Sneaux" for instance, to symbolize its Louisiana snow. We do it all the time. Outsiders find it annoying but it's our thing. It's a nod to our French heritage. Common last names in the area are: Breaux, Arceneaux, Manceaux, Thibodeaux, Boudreaux, etc. So his name is Burrow and he wanted it to say Burreaux to acknowledge how he felt welcomed in Louisiana. (he's from Ohio.)

Daz was right in the connection to the French for the spelling of his name. Joe wanted it spelled that way for his last home game. Not just because he was on the team and LSU’s slogan has always been “Geaux Tigers”. But because he chose LSU after not getting play time elsewhere. He believed in himself enough to transfer here and LSU believed in him enough to give him a position. His dad retired early to watch every one of his games. He wasn’t drafted to play for LSU. He made a conscious decision to leave his home state to play for us. He became one of us and he changed the name on his jersey on senior night, the last home game of his college career to reflect his ties with the state. This was a year where they won every game, including the national championship with a perfect record and he earned the Heisman Trophy, the highest honor for a college football player. He was drafted to the Cincinnati Bengals (more tigers) and now in Louisiana, you see lots of people supporting the Bengals because of Joe. THAT’S why he humbly asked if the equipment guys could make him that jersey that wa only worn for a few minutes before the game started. He ran onto the field and slowly spun around, pointing over his shoulder at the name. The name that the locals and the press had already been calling him because he was one of us.

Dave there stadiums are as big as pro and they fill it every game plus
The conference they belong too has a huge tellivision contract that generates huge revenue stream plus clothing sales plus the big colleges have a large alumni and fan following across the country. Equals a very large revenue stream . So to stay on top you need to recruit top players and wen they see this facility compared to a smaller school with older facility it helps in recruiting witch helps with staying on top.

LSU Alabama is a rivalry but Alabama's main rival is Auburn University. Also OB Daz nailed it. The USA bought Louisiana from France in what is called the "Louisiana Purchase" for 15 million dollars. There is still a large French influence on the city and community. So Joe Burrow changing the spelling on his jersey to a French spelling was an ode to the French roots of the state.

The "eaux" is pronounced "o". Louisiana was originally a French colony, but in the time leading up to the American Revolution, French Canadians that refused to pledge allegiance to the British after the French-Indian War were deported out of their colony of Acadia (now the eastern islands of Canada). When they showed up in Louisiana, all the English speakers couldn't understand them so they thought they were saying Cajun, not Acadia. Cajun became a sorta-language after years of mixing the French language with the southern slang and thick dialect. The further you go out of the major cities, the more Cajun is spoken. In Band of Brothers, the medic was from Louisiana and was able to speak with the French nurses.

Back in the "old days", colleges were members of small(er) regional athletic conferences. Bowl games were "post-season" opportunities for the football team to play top teams from other conferences while generating revenue for the city hosting the game (and get national TV exposure - remember, at the time, there was only one national game of the week on TV). The different bowl game committees would invite teams to play, hoping to get a great matchup on New Year's Day (which is when the top-tier bowl games were played). The top bowl games (at the time) were the Rose Bowl (Pasadena, California), the Sugar Bowl (New Orleans, LA), the Cotton Bowl (Dallas, Texas) and the Orange Bowl (Miami, FL). These bowl games contracted with the leagues where the champions of certain conferences would be one of, if not both, of the teams playing in that particular bowl game - The Rose Bowl had the champion teams from the Pac 10 and the Big 10, The Cotton Bowl had the champion of the Southwest Conference as one of the teams, the Sugar Bowl had the champion of the Southeast Conference as one team - these teams were "locked in", so matchups in the top bowls were limited based upon several different factors. Growing cities created their own bowl games, thus the Peach Bowl (Atlanta, GA), the Fiesta Bowl (Phoenix, AZ) the Citrus Bowl (Orlando, FL), the Holiday Bowl (San Diego, CA), etc. As college football became more TV revenue-driven, it became more important to have a playoff system to match the top four teams - thus the creation of the BCS. These premier games were played as part of the "Bowl Championship Series", whereby identified "bowls" would be given the opportunity to host the selected 1/2/3/4 nationally ranked teams in their game(s). That evolved into the current FBS Playoffs (still 4 teams). Anyway, the bowl system still exists, driven still by TV revenues/sponsors (which provides monetary incentive for top college teams to play in the more lucrative bowl games.) There are so many bowl games now that the NCAA has deemed that a team must win at least 6 games to qualify for bowl season, as some nationally-popular teams (e.g. Notre Dame) might be invited to a bowl game with few wins while other less-prominent teams would not be invited due to a limited TV draw. So, that's the story as I understand it.

Very good, Dave, the bowls were originally named after the state or region's big exports. Certain conferences were tied to certian bowls. Example, the Big 10 champions always played the Pacific 10 champions in the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. The Big 8 and the Atlantic Coast Conference champions played in the Orange Bowl in Miami. And the Southeastern Conference Champion always played in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans against a champion or runner up from one of the other major conferences. The Southwest Conference champion played in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas against a Champion or runner up from another Conference. With conference realignments and a championship playoff, the importance of bowl games has diminished. There are now too many meaningless bowl games that give teams with a slight winning record a chance to have a big game after the season, but if your'e not in the final four playoff, it's all rather meaningless.

-The "eaux" is just the nod to the French roots and history of Louisiana. That's what Burrow wanted to do, give a nod to the school and it's fans.
-The major bowls are, Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta, Peach and Cotton, with the first 4 being the Elite (Bowl Championship Series, (BCS)) of the 6. The Rose Bowl is nicknamed "The Granddaddy of Them All" because it is the oldest current running bowl game to date, starting in 1902. Then there are SEVERAL trash ones that are like giving kids participation trophies. Don't mean anything in the greater scheme, but a bone thrown to the programs, who may even have had losing seasons. I think there are like 35 bowl games all together with the 6 I listed before as the major ones and the originals. Most conferences are usually slated for a specific top bowl game as well, like The Big 10 will usually go to the Rose Bowl.

And then do the winners of those 4 BCS bowls compete in the national championship?
I was born in Idaho and growing up as a kid we followed Boise State. I watched the Fiesta bowl against Oklahoma. The one against TCU. I remember they were ranked number 3. And had to win every game they played because they were in the Mountain West conference. And were basically scrubs. Then lost it all to a field goal kick and never recovered. Since then I fell off and I guess they put in a playoff system to finally give smaller conference teams a better shot at the national title. But yah man in my opinion Boise state should’ve been given a shot. They had a streak there where they were playing perfect seasons and beating some of the bigger teams. But never got a shot at the championship. The most they could ever hope for was one of the 4 bowls cause climbing the bcs ranks depended on bigger teams losing compared to Boise state winning. Which they did do. Unfortunately it was teams like Fresno State. I really feel for a time they were at the SEC level. Shame

The one that drives the size of US college football home to me is the Maryland facilities. Maryland is rarely competitive on the national level (maybe a handful of seasons since the 1950s), yet their training facilities are outrageous. ~150 million invested, and that's just for a re-fitting of an mostly existing structure. - ua-cam.com/video/1au3Z8WwKIo/v-deo.html

Fun fact: the French speaking people who settled Louisiana, were actually ousted from Eastern Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. Ergo, many common family names in Louisiana are the same or similar to family names in present day French speaking parts of Canada.
Those people, who originally settled in Canada, had come to the New World (in large part) from Normandy and Brittany in France.
Linguists concur that the French spoken in Canada and Louisiana more closely resembles 17th century continental French than the dialect presently spoken in Europe.
Truly native French speakers in Louisiana are somewhat rare, although many Louisianans claim at least some level of conversational fluency.
Certain French root words are commonly code-switched into English conversation. Example: lagniappe, meaning a small extra or bonus given as a courtesy.
"I'd like a dozen beignets, please".
"Sure. Tell you what... We baked too many this morning. I'll give you 13. A little lagniappe".

There are 43 bowl games during the last few weeks of the calendar year where depending on how well a team played in the regular season, they will compete with another team of that caliber. Sort of like a one-off champions league game. The biggest bowl games are the: Rose Bowl (California), Orange Bowl (Florida), Sugar Bowl (Louisiana), Fiesta Bowl (Arizona), Cotton Bowl (Texas), Peach Bowl (Georgia) and the Cereal Bowl (lol). These six bowls rotate on who holds the College Football Semi-Finals, with the National Championship now being it's own bowl game (years prior, a few of the six bowl games mentioned would be the de-facto national championship game as well).

If you're wondering how this happens, most large colleges are Non-profit organizations but pull in HUUUUGE amounts of money through merchandising, tv contracts, etc. Because of the extreme revenue, it forces the schools to practically burn the money in property and equipment and sometimes just coaches. For example, the walkthrough you see here is pretty unique to big schools.. but teams like Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, all have to burn 30 to 50 million per year so they end up doing ridiculous things... like the Alabama facility has a monstrous sauna room with walls of TV's and drinks. It's frivolous, but they have to spend that money or lose their non-profit status. The school itself can only build so many buildings or hire so many professors, so they have to think outside the box... and if all else fails, do like Alabama does and overpay the hell out of the coaches for all your sports teams.

It’s insane how much revenue college football makes. It basically finances all women’s collegiate sports and most of the men’s sports, cheerleaders, etc.

Dude college stadiums hold over 100,000 people 6 or 7 times a year. They make crazy money plus all the merch oh and they share revenue from the games being on TV. There not that poor down there as they want you to think.

The main reason for the flashy, hugh end facilities is recruiting. When you bring a young 5-star recruit in for a tour, you want to be able to wow them. Recruiting is the lifeblood of college football in the USA.

College football is weird. Some of these bigger schools have better facilities than some pros. It is uniquely important for college programs to have high tech awesome looking facilities. Players tend to stay 1-2 years and in order to get the best recruits to come to your college over others y1our facilities, winning potential, and name better be top notch or your getting leftovers.

The reason colleges have to spend so much on facilities vs professional teams is colleges have to recruit the players vs drafting them
