    The IIHS guy gets political, Reagan offers "regulatory relief" to auto manufacturers which enables them to sell a shitty product costing thousands more to repair for buyers. It's this type of short-sighted deregulation which decimated the US car industry - US cars not competitive globally, or at home.

      Imagine lobbying your government for tariffs because you couldn’t build a proper fucking car. I’d imagine they would’ve done the same to passenger cars if foreign manufacturers began targeting sedans and wagons at the same rate they did to pickups.

    That doesn't matter. Motorweek never went out of their way(and still haven't) to upload and make old videos like these available for us to watch 20+ years later, so I understand his frustration in someone else taking advantage of he, bajabusta's (now Mrchevybaja), efforts. Despite that, we are all very thankful that 00crashtest made bajabusta's MW '91 recording available for us to watch on this channel.

    I agree with you, as you did provide it in general. Without you uploading it initially, no one would be able to see this today. Too many people are ignorant of that fact concerning rare-to-find videos. It's just a shame you lost your old account full of many of them. Thankfully 00crashtest uploaded this recording of yours after that so we can all still watch it.

    Back when companies had the balls to acknowledge their mistakes and face them in front of the camera. Those days are way far gone.

    • @hakeemsd70m
      @hakeemsd70m 5 років тому +3

      That deteriorated rather quickly. Just a mere 5 years after this Bumper broadcast, in 1996, automakers were crying foul that their vehicles failed the Institute's offset crash test at 40 miles an hour. Crying foul, despite the fact that the offset crash is easily the most common type of accident even to this day.

    • @kaptinkeiff
      @kaptinkeiff 2 роки тому

      @@hakeemsd70m The offset crash isn't the most common type of accident, nor was it the most common at the time. But it was the most common type of fatal accident, and probably still is - albeit at higher speeds

    It’s actually incredible because I have a 2004 Ford F-150 and the front and rear fender is pretty solid to survive a fender a bender. However I was in an accident (not as bad as the one I was in in January when my old truck was totaled) where a guy cut me off at 55mph and I swerved to try to avoid rear ending him and totaling out my truck, and I ended up going onto the center divider and hit and took out 2 street signs. The grill cover cracked apart while bumper ended up getting crushed, so while it’s sturdy to survive a fender bender it’s still able to crumple when something hits it at a high speed. Thankfully the bumper didn’t get crushed enough to bend the frame beyond repair as only the bracket bent, as well as it didn’t smash into the radiator or airbag sensor, I was able to still drive it home.
    The cost still totaled out the cars value mainly because of how much it would take to repair the paint. When I tried to avoid rear ending the guy, I still side swiped him and both of our cars had the paint scratched. The hood also was scratched and grill was cracked down the middle because of the signs hitting them and flying on top of the hood before sliding off the front end. We still kept it though as the truck was still drivable… we got a check back for $4500 while the cost in repairs was $5600

    it's good that the insurance company are doing this the bumper was made out of plastic nothing underneath to take the impact if the car companies could get away with it they would make the bumpers out of cardboard. we may hate the insurance companies at times but they are now looking at their own pockets and at the same time saving our lives we should put more pressure on this car companies in making cars safer it said off they looking at the bottom dollar.

    I miss the days when car's had shock absorbers built into their bumpers. A little 5mph love tap didn't effect those at all...Throughout the mid 80's to the early 90's though, they took out the shock absorber style bumper in favor of the more streamlined (attached directly to the car) bumpers, while prettier in appearance, they are far less effective in low speed impacts.

    • @CaptainCocaine
      @CaptainCocaine 8 років тому +2

      +Nathan McDonald The bumpers you are talking about are still there. They're under the painted bumper covers.

    • @LetsDriveSomewhere
      @LetsDriveSomewhere 8 років тому +4

      +Sedpants McGee I think Nathan is talking about the rubber bumpers where if you tapped something there was literally no damage. The painted bumper covers get scratched so easily. You can't mess up at all or there will be at least hundreds of dollars in damage in paint repair or if you're very unlucky, replacing the bumper cover entirely.
      Plus the metal bumper beams used today won't prevent damage. A mere 5 MPH hit (depending on the car) can still result in thousands of dollars in damage if the fenders, headlights, radiator, and of course the bumper beam itself needing to be replaced. Like Nathan said, the bumpers may be very attractive but the way they're used now is are pretty ineffective.

    • @LetsDriveSomewhere
      @LetsDriveSomewhere 8 років тому +4

      Sadpants McGee Well yes of course but we are humans and accidents happen. If accidents didn't happen we wouldn't need bumpers in the first place.

  • @LetsDriveSomewhere

    HA! I thought the same thing!!! He says this because he makes is salary off of the insurance companies! I see if from both sides. I am a conservative, so I don't like the regulations forcing private companies to do something in order to sell a product. On the other side, I am interested in car engineering, of which, safety is a huge factor. This is why I like what the IIHS was originally built on, telling consumers what's up, and letting the companies do it on their own free will.

      I own and drive a 1993 Ford Taurus GL in 2010 when i first started driving after taking ownership of it i was backing up distracted and backed up the rear end of the car perfectly centered in the middle of the rear bumper against a pole barn garage pole and the fiberglass bumper shattered though also had metal bracing behind it and the fiberglass bumper cover was the only thing i had to replace on my car there was no body damage to and metal panels or the metal trunk lid

      Don't remember i was 18 years old learning to drive in 2010 and got the 1993 Ford Taurus GL from my great aunt who bought the car brand new originally in 1993.. my parents paid to replace the bumper and got the replacement bumper from a local junkyard.. my car is Royal blue and the replacement bumper is green since it came off a green 1992 to 1995 Ford Taurus.. Still drive the the car today and i'm 25 years old the car is 24 years old and my great aunt passed away in 2012 at the age of 85.. Obtained the car because she couldn't see to drive she was legally blind and hadn't been driving her own and had family members drive her car to transport her to where she needed to go for years up till the day she asked me if i wanted her Ford Taurus GL.. .. Rode around in the car as a child growing up with family members packed into the car at times had 5 to 6 people crammed into it in the early to mid 1990's and early 2000's so the car has sentimental value.

    We can debate all day about what is the lesser of two wrongs, but I will contest that my uploads spawn from a VHS tape that I originally captured as a youth. Purchased the technology to transfer said content, and share. Whether we agree or disagree about who's content it is, I will still have original cassette. Reason being why i watermark my content to at least have some controls in place, to see who actually has original content, and those that simply right click download.

      Batwing 330 Well yeah but those features are usually only seen on the tippy-top trim levels of cars, and almost everyone taps poles or something else at some point.

    • @thatretailguru
      @thatretailguru 7 років тому

      I guess you are right, it depends on the car, some cars like most toyotas offer the auto brake as standard equipment as well as rearview cameras, some cars make it optional, others it's not avalible

    • @spongehenify

      Henry Butler Yep, and the Toyota Tundra for 2018 will have autobrake as standard equipment, the 2018 Ford f150 will make it optional, and the Chevy Silverado/ Gmc Sierra have it as optional equipment

    • @erica-lillycrider1088
      @erica-lillycrider1088 7 років тому

      Henry Butler You are somewhat true with that comment about accidentally hitting poles.. i as new teenage driver in 2010 at the age of 18 was attempting to back my 1993 Ford Taurus GL into the family pole barn garage while also being distracted with the cars radio switching through stations trying to find my favorite station and didn't think at the time it would have a impact on my driving skills boy was i wrong.. crash boom bam!! family members ran to where i was in wonder of what was going on and to find out what i had done it was a very loud slow crash at low speeds left the rear bumper snapped in two hanging down i pulled the car up as they asked and they investigated the damage to my car luckily the only damage was the bumper which was replaced with a green bumper from another 1992 TO 1995 Ford Taurus from a local junkyard... my car on the other hand is Royal blue bumper sticks out like a sore thumb so every time i get into the car and go somewhere i remember that fateful day i destroyed the original bumper on the car i'm now 25 and love my car and am way better at driving than i was as a teenager luckily that small mishap at 18 years of age was my only crash i've ever had and learned a lesson from it don't touch the radio controls unless you are stopped or are going forward no touching the radio controls in reverse!
