Please continue this series, not enough content out there for U.S. sub warfare in WW2. Cant wait to see if the Perch's luck holds out
I agree
Wolfpack345 has done tons of SH4 a few years ago...
I would say we are lacking in Japanese and Russian sub warefare in WW2. That said, there is no subsim that features these as playable countries that I know of.
@@mikocap21 the japanese sub doctrine focused on supporting the fleet more than interdiction until later into the war when it was to late so i under stand the lack of japanese sub games
@@mikocap21 There is the Soviet Waterways mod for SH4. Pretty good, very difficult if you play in the Baltic Sea.
Good luck on this new series. In reality for those curious, the real USS Perch was scuttled during its second war patrol on March 3rd, 1942 with its entire 59 man crew successfully evacuating and ended up captured. 5 men succumbed to malnutrition but the rest would survive.
The wreck was unintentionally discovered in 2006 by dive teams searching for HMS Exeter. Unfortunately, because the wreck wasn’t designated a war grave because none of the crew died in the sinking, the wreck was illegally salvaged and is no longer on the ocean floor.
Hmmmm I couldn't possibly hope to even guess what nation may have done that..
@@intruative : There are a lot of illegal salvagers in Asia and the Pacific who absolutely don't care about war graves. HMS Prince of Wales and HMS Repulse have been salvaged, and so have nearly all the many wrecks around Guadalcanal. Sadly, the days of war graves in the Pacific Theatre remaining undisturbed are over.
Unfortunately there's a bunch of war graves that are being salvaged for the metal.
@@timonsolusChina is genuinely fucking rotten for letting their boys scrap up the POW and Repulse
@@timonsolus The Chinese poachers tried, but, got arrested by the Malaysian Navy... I saw that in the news!!!
SH4 definetly brings back memories, probably still have the disks for the base game and uboat expansion still laying around somewhere. Hope that Taff is aware that the most US subs can get the SD(air)+SJ(surface) radar upgrade from the beginning to avoid further surprises in the mist and if I recall correctly, they can be used underwater but you need to set depth slightly above the periscope depth manually so that radar mast is above the water.
Hey, they should make a new Silent Hunter game this time operating in a Japanese submarine during World War II
Or a british sub
Or a Dutch one
Noooo
Someone was working on a Japanese WW2 mod for SH4. I am not sure if he finished it, but it had Japanese subs, medals, and crew skins.
Or Loud Hunter - you play as a destroyer against submarines 😅
3:04 wow, those battleships sure have seen better days - it's up to Taff to avenge them. Remember the Arizona!!!!!
Buck O'Hare, huh? Does he go where no ordinary sailor would dare?
As a former submarine Torpedoman out of Pearl Harbor, I'm all in on this one! I always enjoy your sub captain content, thank you, Taff!
As a former submariner, I served on NH 44550 USS C-1 in 1912, I can attest that these videos are great.
As a former submariner in the war of 1812, i can attest to this video being excellent@@cabriskus4700
@@cabriskus4700 what? My name here is trident 731, which is the USS Alabama, which refers to the second submarine I was on. I believe that your comment was implying that I was making that up out of whole cloth. Nope. I hope that you feel better and have a great day.
@@731trident “As a former submarine torpeodoman out of Pearl Harbor” should probably take some English classes before I start to believe you served onboard a submarine.
@cabriskus4700 if you're trying to insult me, it's not working. As a torpedoman, I was often referred to as a 'trained monkey', so of course my English isn't going to be up to snuff. I suppose since I haven't been in an English class since 1989. Now I have trees to climb and poo to fling 🐵🐒🦧
I absolutely 💯 % served on the USS Ulysses S. Grant SSBN 631 out of Groton and Holy Loch, as well as the USS Alabama SSBN 731 out of Silverdale and Ford Island, Pearl Harbor.
I wish you all the best. 😉👍
Ohhh more Silent Hunter!! Awesome, your previous SH5 campaigns are among my most favourite videos on YT. THANK YOU!
Hearing that soundtrack after such a long time makes me nostalgic. Thanks for playing this!
YES! I loved to play this game when I was in my teen years. Also, do we want to see it: hell yes! It might be old, but beats SH5 hands down
Wish to know more about the "Silent Service" of U.S. submarine warfare in the pacific during WWII? I highly recommend these books.
Wahoo: The Patrols of America's Most Famous World War II Submarine by Richard O'Kane
Clear the Bridge!: The War Patrols of the USS Tang by Richard O'Kane (Tang would sink more ships in 9 months of service than most boats would in 4 years)
Thunder Below!: The USS *Barb* Revolutionizes Submarine Warfare in World War II by Eugene B. Fluckey
Silent Running: My Years on a World War II Attack Submarine by James F. Calvert
Run Silent, Run Deep (fiction) by Edward L. Beach Jr.
So excited to see you playing this 👍😁
Looking forward to seeing more of this one! SH4 is definitely my favorite of the series, and I'm keen to see you playing it.
The agent was swimming beneath the raft pretending to be a turtle - it was a deliberate tactical choice. 🐢
Glad to see you're playing this one, it's one of my favorite submarine games. Good Hunting, Captain. I remember doing one mission (with out Mods) where I was returning to base after attacking a convoy and using up all torpedoes. I had to evade another fleet that had many carriers and it drained my batteries. So after evading, I had to surface to cycle the air and charge my batteries after evading the enemy fleet only to discover a net of air craft and took a major beating from said air craft and taking heavy damage to the point where my port engine was knocked out of action beyond repair. I was lucky that I was able to limp back to port on that one but I shot down 10 aircraft in the process.
Yeii!! Yeii!!! Taff and his Subs!!! Love It,really going to enjoy this!!! Thanks!!!
Hell yeah!!! This is sweet taff, great to see you playing this.. to see you trying out the American submarines after your devotion to the U-boats is like a dream. This is going to be an incredible series after seeing years of devotion to the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, your going to have some challenges in regards of the torpedoes indeed.. but your always free to use the deck gun as usual 😉. Welcome to a brand new series, the scourge of the Atlantic comes to the Pacific, this is going to be gripping. Congratulations on your first successes in this series.. first of many no doubt.. Happy hunting mate and well done 👏 👍
Yeah, I hate the Mk XIV's .... one of the s ubsim modders created a mod that made them duds even if you used the "glancing blow" workaround .... that way you couldn't cheat and avoid duds before this solution was discovered.
@@neptunenavalmods4420 Failure is like onions I believe they said about the Mk XIVs.. Devin Horner played a few episodes of this and though he didn't really get any duds, he mentioned them quite frequently and also explained about the Failure of command believing that their torpedoes we're no good. My deepest pity has always gone out to the US submariners, had to do their duty and when they did do it.. torpedoes we're as crappy as the word went. Those that did work.. that was a stroke of a miracle, the same went for the US torpedo bomber crews in the early years of the Pacific war.. Dark times.. very dark times.. and had to do so much with so little. Makes you appreciate a lot more what they had to deal with.
@@joeaustin4472 : The Germans had the same very severe problems with their own torpedoes, which weren't solved until the end of 1942, more than halfway through the Battle of the Atlantic. Also, most German U-boats carried fewer torpedoes than American submarines.
@@timonsolus Yeah I've read about that, many of them we're prone to missing, not holding depth very well was frequently noted along with some veering off course, never heard of duds though.. but that doesn't mean that there wasn't any, if there was then this'll be the first time I've heard of it. I do like the US subs for their shapes and elegant appearances as well as their torpedo loadout numbers.
I like very much your videos and your novelistic style. Can’t wait to see more episodes . I’ve tried SH3, SH4. SH5 and now UBoat but can’t match with SH4 with the Pacific scenarios. Just because this video I am willing to return to SH4 and check for all mods you described .
Love this - looking forward to your next post.
Great video, I've been waiting for a series like this. let's hope your sub lives long enough.
Great stuff👍🏻 1 of my uncles was U76s radio operator. I was always interested in submarines cuze of his stories. 😊
Awsome, a silent hunter playthrough!
Excellent job. Looking forward to the next one.
Awesome Taff so glad your doing this game, thanks 🙏
Awesome! As much as I enjoy playing UBOAT it has a long way to go before it rivals Silent Hunter games. They just have a level of atmosphere I haven't yet experienced in UBOAT.
You got me playing again, but the only thing I got a sniff of so far in the Marianas was too fast for the Porpoise class to get eyeballs on. Please keep the series going 👍
Yes - I would like to see more. Thank you
THat is a hopeful start, thank you Taff, this looks like it will be a fun series
Taff, this looks like an excellent career. Definitely a good choice since so little is known about US sub operations in the western Pacific. Nasty weather that belies the name Pacific! Yes, you were lucky, but you maneuvered very well to make your luck. I suspect you used the deck gun because you know the Mark 14 torpedoes are garbage. That last ship was a real challenge because of the terrible visibility. Well done! By the way, definitely get the radar upgrade - those surprises were nerve wracking!
In the Pacific, the weather got worse the further north you went. Around the latitude of the Aleutians it was absolutely dreadful most of the time.
20:50 have never seen a submarine drive by shooting that was awesome haha
I do love silent Hunter 4. I still have this game on my P.C. Need to play this again.
what a great series to do, i can not wait for the next one
That was an intense opening fight!
To say the mark 14 had issues.... you are a master of understatement
I have no personal experience with SH4 but I watched friend playing it back then for hours. I played SH3 for quite a while before. SH4/Pacific is quite easy because IJN has no real effective antisub-strategy nor equipments, nothing like Allies had in Atlantic. So SH4 is way easier but also much prettier than SH3. But I like subsims so I'm following this series too - keep up the good work 🥰
Most players when they leave Pearl will stop and top off the fuel at Midway. Than head to the Japan area. When they go back to Pearl, they will stop at Midway again for fuel.
Wonderful!!! I hope you survive your first stes of patrols to upgrage to a newer better sub, like a Bilao class. At least you didnt have any dud torpedoes in your first patrol. Fitting in that it came out a day after Veteran's Day (in the US)/Remeberance Day (Commonwealth/UK)
You don't actually get as many duds as you should in SH4, even with dud torpedoes turned on, the designers dialled the historical dud rate back in the game because they thought players would be frustrated.
Good Job!
Great video! I’d really like to see more of USS-Perch under Taff’s expert command
Loving a new sub series!
Commander Buck O'Hare?
I like the wordplay^^
Glad to see you in the Pacific. Iti is interesting with US subs with their lousy torpedoes.
I thought that the Perch was gone in the 1st go-around! Great 1st patrol, torps worked! And the deck gun ammo works quite well, it didn't require 30 shots.
Thank you for doing this series….
I was thinking of going back to playing this yesterday..lol
I hope this is the next series! I absolutely love this game with the fall of the rising sun mod.
Definitely took *insert agant* to heart lol
Always up for some SH4👍
I enjoy your videos.
Very nice , i still play SH 3 and 4
I love love love SH4 series Taff!!!!!
To be historically accurate... first 11 episodes should consist of 70% non-detonating Mk14 torps... 'shitty eels' aplenty... good hunting 👍
Man the deck gun!
Yesssssssssssssssssssssssss I been asking for pacific sub dim for so long
I love it please continue
yes please do a series on this.
Hi Buck! ❤
yeay! i've started to follow your channel because of sh5. unfortunately it was just too buggy. finally some sh action again!
3 1 5?
My brain: Ryan turn right, heading 3 1 5.
SH4 is great. Be interesting to how Microprose's Silent Depth 2 compares 🙂
Looking forward to seeing more! Have you looked into Cold Waters?
Yes more plz
I love this game .
Thank god he is not my captain ! I would have surrendered immediately 😂
Very nicely done, indeed. I'm duly impressed with your "water graphics"...is this an add on 3rd party mod?? I have the game still kicking around (somewhere?!) but I don't remember such stunningly good water graphics? Keep'm coming. ;)
I have greatly enjoyed SH4. It's always a fun time.
Glad to see you start this series, there is so little american sub content out there.
Excellent love this game , using any mods Taff?
As soon as you see a deck gun on a Merchant, dive, dive, dive you cannot risk being hit and be unable to submerge!
Goddammit that Akizuki jumpscare. I thought submarine games werent horror games
Nice to see the Pacific theatre for a change. Can you tell us any mods you may be using?
Oh this is going to be good
8 to 12 knots is what sh4 considers medium speed. You can place marks on your map to kelp you in tracking and plotting.
The Dive plane Bug is a Thing, have to load the game on the surface to get that to work right.
Most Excellent Game, I enjoy watching other stories of fights against Japan in our Old Fleet Boats.
Good Game so Far for you.
If this is a mod, the 250 FT subs can dive to around 400 feet before they take damage. Gato is around 450. So you can go a bit deeper.
More of this please
Is it vanilla Silent Hunter 4?
EDIT: ah, I heard it in the video, but I do not see any mods listed in the description.
PS. fantastic game, hope to see more!
PPS. I recommend "Silent Victory" by Clay Blair, it is a bible of Pacific submarine warfare.
I don't know if I'd call a failure rate of just over 75% a little temperamental. I think it's pretty safe to say the Mark 14 was almost complete garbage, lol...
But it is fun to see this being played again. Really is a good game. The mega mods out there like Fall of the rising sun Ultimate really give it new life as well.
More please.
Buck O'Hare? Aren't you supposed to be croaking Toads in space?
If you're operating out of Pearl Harbour, it's definitely worth refueling at Midway on your way out.
Yes please do more on this series. But after finishing this can you do a silent hunter 3 series too.
I appreciate how measured you described the Mk.14. I, and better people than I, would have just said that they were utter dogshit.
Not a bad American accent! Cheers!
Should have taken out the deck gun on that third ship. That's what I do in SH-3
*US Submariners on their way to their first war patrols wanting to hunt Japanese ships*
"Oh boy, I sure hope our limited torpedos we do have actually function and sink ships like its intended"
*Mark 14 smiling in the launch tubes >:)*
When it's foggy and bad weather is the most advantageous time to attack.
Use your equipment and submarine tactics.
Heading of contacts and course ploting of enemy will allow you to hit unseen objects.
Stalk the enemy for hours. You don't need to surface at all.
Submarines are elite friends.
You really need to install a mega mod like trigger maru or Fall of the Rising Sun. You can also add the forward battery compartment and all of officers country, including the ward room. The same mod makes the control room , conning tower, and forward battery all one solid interior. If you use an S-boat, it's the entire interior of the sub.
Cool video could you point me in the right direction of a similar game but maybe using a ship instead of a sub?
After this Taff, going to re-install!
14:01 Me and the lads when we are sunk by a US submarine
Thanks for the video and playthrough Taff! Any chance you can share your modlist with us please?
The 2IC at the map table looks like a young Kevin Spacey.........
The soundtrack hit different in this game. Idk y. Just my favorite
10:05 That agent was indeed inserted.
Hi taff, excellent video
are you using any mods or this is the stock version of sh4?
If she's bow on and you fire AP into the bow, well, you can figure out what's likely to happen.
I pose a question. What was the IJE logistical situation at the culmination of war with the allies? BTW, excellent water graphics for silent hunter 4!
This submarine reminds me of a sub in a movie I seen can’t remember the name of it tho
Oh man, Why did you dive after that first merchant ship? I would have high tailed it on the surface before the destroyer inevitably rocked up.
