Woo hoo 2 silent Hunter videos in 1 day. First one was Wolfpacks Mediterranean sea campaign on SH3 and now Taff's continues efforts to dominate the Japanese foes in the pacific. Today's a good day 😎🍺
Deck gun kills were common in the 42 sub campaign so historically accurate. The abrupte change from being depth charged to suddenly being on the surface in calm seas was a bit of a surprise. Sorry to hear there are technical issues, Good luck.
Yeah, I guess you could call a 76% failure rate a little tempramental. Kinda like you could say Vesuvius only covered Pompeii with a little ash....Lol... Anyway, I'm glad you're doing this series. SH4 doesn't get as much love as I think it should, and it is fun to see things from a different perspective. I only wish they had put in the ability to play as the Japanese, since they had some really interesting sub designs as well. For example, it would have been kind of neat to have a mission commanding an I-400 and sneaking up to the US west coast to launch and recover your aircraft.
I would want to play the Japanese subs too. I didn't know about these games. I played Command and Conquer. I wish I had known about them. This game and Cold Waters. I don't know where to get them now
Currently binging this series, and I must admit, giving a destroyer a few shots with the deck gun was a gigachad move- I am surprised your sub can even surface what with the weight of your polished and hardened steel balls! 😂
Really enjoying this new SH4 series so far Mr. Taff it's nice to see channels giving this game some love here's hoping you eventually do a series with the Asiatic Fleet start using an S Class boat for more of a challenge as it is the oldest class of sub in the game that is playable from the 1941 start date & can only load Mk. 10's.
Excellent episode taff, a tense game of cat and mouse between sub and destroyers.. the good thing is that IJN sonar was weak compared to other navies sonars.. of all destroyers in WW2 IJN sonar was the weakest, but of course that didn't mean it was useless.. sonar was still lethal.. but unless the IJN was in close.. the chances of survial was minimal.. at distance.. it was a different story. Devin Horner mentioned that in one of his episodes.. he mentioned about how weak IJN sonar was.. but I can't remember the full description. Fog on the ocean.. so typical.. that enemy merchant looked like it was trying to ram.. or perhaps it didn't see you and it was there out of fortune. Deck gun never fails does it? Two more trophies to the belt, those will bloody the IJN in regards of their merchant fleet. Your in for a treat out here mate, well done with this episode despite the hardships you've gond through in getting it on 👏 👍
4:32 - Yeah, Midway was NOT that big a port. Submarines were about the only major vessels to use it. Destroyers rarely did, and anything larger (BBs, CVs, or cruisers) never.
Taff, with the fog, it's been hide and seek, a fascinating cat and mouse game that at times was nail biting! But even with all the problems you've been having, you have still done very well. That last deck gun action was brilliant. I couldn't see those ships at all, yet you still pummeled them with the gun. Weird shit with the fog - sure would be nice to have a surface radar for accurate ranging. Still, the fog means low risk from aircraft.
you should do a campaign after this where you follow the exploits of commander fluckey. he commanded the uss barb, and among other exploits, was the first sub captain to bombard shore targets with a submarine by having rockets on the main deck. he also sent a raiding party ashore into japan during the war to blow up a train with a scuttling charge. the explosion was so powerful that it launched the train engine over 200 ft in the air. would love to see something like this (or as close as the game will allow) in your videos.
Could it possibly be that you haven't activated dud torpedoes? At that time you should have somewhere between 50 to 80 percent fail rate with your mark 14s. Up to now you haven't had any duds. I hope you can sort out the problems. It would be a shame if this series went the way SH5 did. I really love to see your SH-content.
The developers of SH4 deliberately lowered the dud rate, even with dud torpedoes turned off because they thought ordinary players would get frustrated if they couldn't sink anything. A strange decision, as you can always turn off dud torpedoes in the settings if you want a casual experience. You need mods in SH4 to get a historical dud rate.
@@garytwinem5275 thanks for the clarification. odd decision indeed. The devs could have opted for three settings: no duds, historical or reduced dud chance. That shouldn't have been all to difficult to realize. The overall structure had to be implemented for the yes/no differentiation anyways.
When you decoyed the destroyer, the bubbles were scattering the active pings, and you Dove deep under and in front. You can repeat the tactic only once more and not as long lasting.
SH4 has always had some issues, but constantly crashing? Tho I got the game from hard copy, I had a hard copy of SH3 a while back, and had some issues as well, but recently got it on steam, and having more issues than I remember with crashes, so idk if it's a steam thing or what
Lucky Fluckey promised 5 ships sunk per patrol. Can you match it? I suspect that you won't be sinking a train, sadly. 😊😊😊❤❤❤😊😊😊 I bought this game years ago and could never get it to run. It was sent to a charity shop in the end. 😢😮😢
@@Lowkehwhoops. My bad. I meant tilted up and down. Like how you look up and down by tiki ting your head. I meant to ask “Can periscopes really be (tilted) up and down?” Yes I know they can be “raised and lowered) irl. Lol sorry.
@@major3336 Oh! No worries, it's actually my bad because for some reason I couldn't figure out what you meant by "mouse control". It seems so obvious now. You know, that is a very interesting question-so much so that I spent the entire evening searching for documents/reports just to double-check. In short: Yes, you could tilt the periscope up and down, at least in WW2 (idk about WW1). How much you could tilt depended on the periscope. I knew that the observation periscope (aka "air search periscope") of German Uboats were designed to allow for higher angles of view. However, I wasn't sure if the attack periscope could (it could, at least some degree...) US periscopes' maximum tilt varied between 40 to ~78 degrees (again, depends on which of the sub's periscope we're talking about), the latter giving a 90 degree field of view at low magnification power setting.
@@major3336 Thanks! Yeah, it sure is, especially with mods. It's a real shame that we probably won't get a Silent Hunter 6. Ubisoft holds the IP and the subsim genre is too niche/small for them to bother investing in
All too easy! The Japanese destroyers didn't shoot back even with you lighting yourself up by firing your deck gun. Historically the Japanese had great night optics, better than the US.

Glad to see the patch actually worked, Taff! Been watching your videos for few years and still find them brilliant, keep it up, mate!
MK14's are strong independent torpedoes. They do whatever they want.
2 escorts for a Passenger Liner, that could have been a POW prison ship
Bro really deck gunned a destroyer

Thank you so much for trying to continue with this game and campaign, I didn't know it had so many operational issues.

Yoooo! Another episode! Keep up the good work man! Your content is amazing!

Fog is the most entertaining weather in the games.
thank you for a great video, looks like its going to be a great series, keep up the great work really enjoy watching them
loving this, i must admit i play this in vanilla, because of crashing didn't have time to thoroughly investigate.
Thank you for pressing on!!!!!!!
Outstanding episode, the brass set on Buck O'Hare must indeed be impressive! Hope you can sort your technical issues.
My respects sir.
I really hope you can make this work. Love this series!
Thank you Taff!! Love your vids!!❤
Deck gunning a destroyer and actually hitting it at night. Awesome tafft! Like Up yours! That's funny.
that is amazing progress thank you Taff!

Hi Taff really enjoying your videos, make sure the Large Address Application has properly been enabled, it must be run after mod activation.
I seem to remember this game having issues with time compression messing with the weather. Caused constant fog. There are console commands to change
How did you get your CTD sorted?
bought this today after watching your vids so far looking good, what graphic settings are you running ? keep the videos coming great series.
For the compass mod i wonder if you can just put into mod folder
Loved the under shot. LoL
fight hard, this is my favorite sh game
Really hope tech issues don't prevent this series from continuing
I love your content, have you played with the super long range attack strat where you fire at nearly 8,000 yards or greater?
Have you played the Silent War 2.0 board game? Excellent series btw.
I would have loved to know the name of that American carrier but other then that great video mate!

If this doesnt work out, Destroyer: Uboat Hunter finally released its Campaign mode. You could give that a go.
When you decoyed the destroyer, the bubbles were scattering the active pings, and you Dove deep under and in front. You can repeat the tactic only once more and not as long lasting.

more please
Glad to see you got through the crashes. Will U-BOAT return anytime soon, since it got updated?

What mod pack are you using Taft? After following your patrol career I am thinking of getting the game. Played heaps of SH3 in the day, thx.
I’m trying to figure out why your HUD/graphics for controls are so different from mine
You know, this afternoon I fell asleep to a SH4 video and somehow had the dream that you did torpedo the Yamato. Maybe it is a signal...
Carnac Island is a Tiger snake infested sea lion Nature reserve
Much bigger Rottnest Island (military installation) was operationally left off
Have u spoke to wolfpack taff??
Question, how do move in 1st person around? Is it a mod? And, what mods are you using to make the graphics look more pleasing?

what kind of equipment are you using and how did you get?
I think the sound you keep hearing at 180 is your own motors 🙂
Hoping the game stays stable.
Please sneak into a port for a chance at anchored capital ships
I would be trying to do that do. Brave the mine fields in ports to sink ships. Like the old movie "destination Tokyo "
It’s a Memory problem, I’ve had issues around large ports, even though my PC can handle it, the game can’t since it’s capped at a certain limit
I don't think Midway ever looked like that?
How are you getting it to look this good and run this well?
Running the mods in the description
Can periscopes really be moved up and down like you can with the mouse control?? Or is that just a “fun gameplay” aspect they added??
Yes, you can physically move the periscope up and down. It'll get spotted if you keep it up for too long, close, and/or too high up above the surface
