Besides his musical and cultural significance, his amazing voice, charisma and looks Elvis was most of all authentic. Which means he is not in any way imitating. He was the starting point, the benchmark for all that came after him. The guy who had the guts to be totally different. And that is why he is the King.

It’s well known that prior to a performance he had stage fright. BUT when he walked out on stage and began making contact with his audience the stage fright evaporated because he loved them and they loved him. EP was in command of any stage he was performing on. He had his voice, he moved like a cat, he was in communication throughout his performance with his band and backup singers. And the audience…there was a relationship with them: he knew it and they knew it. He was one of a kind.

I’ve loved Elvis all my life! He died the year I was born, but both my parents (Mum especially, for obvious reasons!) were big fans so I grew up listening to him. I even used to take Mum’s records, a greatest hits in particular, while she wasn’t looking, and play them over and over! Mum passed away in 2019, but I like to think she’s met him in the afterlife… probably fangirling and making him laugh!

Elvis had a great sense of humor and it showed onstage. Sometimes when performing this song, when he got down in that crouching position, he would change the words "because I love you too much baby" to "I hope this suit don't tear up baby". He loved all his band members like family, and the onstage banter with them was always fun, like with the backup singer Myrna in this video. And that badass drummer happens to be my cousin Ronnie!

It honestly brings tears to my eyes when I watch all these young folks discovering Elvis. I live in Tennessee and I grew up LOVING him. I remember his Aloha from Hawaii concert was the first concert EVER to be broadcast live via Satellite all over the world. I was a teenager and it's all everyone especially girls talked about for so long before it happened. It was such a HUGE EVENT. I was living with my brother and sister-in-law and I got to watch it in color...also a big deal back then because not many people could afford color tv. When he came on I thought I was going to fall out of my chair. I ended up lying in the floor in front of the tv and I didn't move until it was over. I loved that man so much and still do. I cried until I couldn't cry anymore the day he died and I still can't watch him singing without tears. I'm just so happy to know this beautiful man will live on long after my generation is gone.

That guy was a total athlete if you really think about the stuff he was doing. And don't forget the fact that those jumpsuits weighed a whole lot and were hot as hell. What I love about this particular performance capture is not only is he looking back at his incredible drummer Ronnie Tutt, and they are egging each other on, he goes over and fucks with one of his backing vocalists.
There are actually some behind the scenes floating around on UA-cam where you can see them in practice and also just kind of hanging out and he had a good chemistry with everybody in that band including the Sweet Inspirations which was the name of his black female backing choir. He also had a male choir as well and he would just hang out and they would crack each other up and the one lady that he pranked?
Apparently she pranked him sometimes like in practice, though never on stage I don't think. And so he took advantage of the moment and pranks her. And you can just see her laughing her ass off after he startled her, and he just can't help laughing out loud at what he just did.
Talk about having fun in front of a whole bunch of people with a huge band just roaring away behind you and you just still have that presence to go mess around a little bit and let the band know, hey man we're in this together up here on this huge stage in front all these people.
And then he goes out and fucks with the audience in a lot of these performances, lets them know, hey we're all together here man.
Anyway hilarious reaction; glad I found your channel.

@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 I agree with all of that. Yeah, Elvis was part of a racist system. From what I heard Elvis himself was cool because he grew up poor, but we would probably still consider him racist by today's standards. He did copy a lot of black artists, but he also had good looks and talent and put his own twist on things. I like Elvis, but I agree he was problematic. In his later years he supported Nixon and had a fetish for law enforcement. He would probably be MAGA today (but maybe not). He was the King for awhile, but now it's Lebron. Best not to put anyone on too high of a pedestal and just admire them for the good things they contribute to the world.

Elvis was scheduled to appear at the astrodome, along with his backup singers(the sweet inspirations) and his entourage.
But when they all arrived, Elvis was told by the event organiser that only he and his entourage were aloud to go out on the field, that his backup singers had to stay behind at the hotel.
Elvis never being one to back down to racists, told the organiser that if the sweet inspirations weren't aloud to go then neither would he.
When the organiser backed down, Elvis insisted that the sweet inspirations have their own Cadillac driven by a blonde girl.
    "Fighting Racism
Elvis demonstrated his desire for racial reconciliation in the musicians he chose, and in the treatment they received. When he made his first appearance in texas at the Astrodome, according to Myrna Smith, Elvis was told, 'Well, you can leave the black girls home. You don't have to bring them'.
Myna Smith: Elvis responded with, 'Well if they don't come, I don't come'. But he was really upset about it. There was one person in particular who had sent the message. So when we got there, we were greeted by this little blonde in a convertible and she had to drive us around and she was his daughter. So Elvis always made sure he got even. I'm sure he said, 'And I want your daughter to drive them" taken from the sweet inspirations section of the Elvis Presley fan club site.

I was born 1 year before his death... But as a kid I loved his voice and style... To the point that I had his face glued to my "school bag" in high school... At the time of Gun's and Roses, and Iron Maiden T-Shirt...
I was with Elvis and Pink Floyd one of the "happy few"... Of course I also listened to Nirvana, Rage, Soundgarden, No FX and music from "my age", but who had the balls to put an Elvis face on his bag in a southern France beach city, in early 90's ? :)
Keanu was doing Point Break at the time... No UA-cam... You can't imagine ! :)
Anyway, I'm glad that now Elvis is coming back from the "old ages" and is getting respect for who he was. And I'm happy to live that time when I can see "The King" the way I couldn't have hoped at the time... I love him even more after "seeing" really the "beast" he was. Pure Charisma... Seeing him, you can comprehend how religions could have started. You can't hate the guy, he was nice, cute, full of talent, humble despite all the "stardom"...
I'm sure that even JS Bach would have rock with Elvis.

Aw, man. Aw, man. I love this, this performance by Elvis made me understand the love for Elvis. I think it's his call and response, he creates this great big feedback loop between himself, the audience but most of all the band backing him. You can tell the rapport between Elvis and the assembled band, there's almost a kind of jazz vibe going on as they're riffing on his crescendos and the lowest of his murmurings, and the way his body moves it all is electric. Also that moment between him and the backing singer at 5:44 is just one of the most adorable things ever. And this is my favourite song by him, bar none.
In spite of the burn-out and ultimate destruction visited upon him by the parasitic evil Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis still remains an oddly shining light. Sure, he could be accused of being the 'acceptable white' face of black music, and we can grieve how he vastly out-earned struggling great African-American talents, but he personally rarely let pass an opportunity to champion a black musician and often brooded upon how he felt he wasn't as talented as Fats Dominio. He helped open a door, and in the South at the time, that was something.
And Christ could he rock. Thanks for these videos man. They're a joy.
P.S: Just got back from the pub and sentimental, so apologies for rambling.

This was a great reaction to the King, and Peter, good comments. Maybe he outearned black entertainers, but Elvis outearned, outshined every other entertainer of the time. He gave so much away that he was close to getting broke at the time of his death. James Brown and many others credited Elvis with helping them be successful and bringing black music into broad acceptance and popularity. Colonel Parker was both good and bad in that he helped Elvis get started with his success, but in the end his control and greed helped push Elvis toward burnout. I think Elvis' sense of loyalty kept him from cutting ties with the Colonel. I'm sure there were some legally binding issues, but Elvis would have been powerful enough to break away if he had tried.

The backup singer who Elvis scared, her name was Myrna Smith and Elvis had a crush on her. He asked her out on a date one time. But she had just started dating Elvis's manager and so Elvis apologized because he didn't know and he butt out. Myrna later ended up marrying Elvis's manager they were married for several years.

They always talk about how the Ed Sullivan show would only film him above the waist because of his suggestive dancing and movements. But even as late as this performance, you can still evidence of it. Every time he really starts grinding - the camera quickly switches to face close ups or very distant shots.
