This arc is definitely more a continuous connection than a lot of the earlier episodes that were like characters we met once and never see again and past characters we see are connected to the Doctor. Really love this part of the series as there is so much stuff that is connected to the main cast.
You didn't like the psychologist's drinking while dining with Richard, but, on the other hand, it really doesn't matter. If one wants to give up a habit, they need to change the pattern of reaction to the stimuli (from e.g.: I see alcohol -> want to drink -> can't stop -> get drunk into: I see alcohol -> no strong reaction -> can have sth else instead if I really have to -> lower the tension in a different/healthier way). So it's only the matter of reprogramming yourself. I remember how I was giving up smoking. Do you really think that any other smoker didn't smoke when I was around? Now the smell of the smoke itself is unbearable for me and I don't need anybody to treat me as a puppet deprived of self-control. Great reaction as usual!
@@GOTGames I get your point of course, and some years ago I bet I'd think the same, yet the experience and knowledge proved that it works in the way I tried to describe above. I was surprised, too 😅
People say that they like the connected episodes more, but the previous stand-alone episodes were important pieces that needed to be put into place to establish characters like Eva and themes like parent-child relationships. The white-knuckle edge of your seat ride that is Monster could not exist without them. The reason Monster is such a masterpiece is in large part in how it establishes its characters and themes beforehand, so you know what's at stake, you know the characters motivations, and you know anyone could die.
I promise there are answers to Johan's motives eventually, but they're far reaching, and we'll need to root out even more clues before all is said and done. I think what's really fascinating here though, is that even when we have Johan front and center as an actual character in the story, he's still like this. nothing we think we've learned from watching him will ever stick. the kind boy who cried while listening to Karl talk about his life? can't truthfully be cohesive with the person who has been doing all of this to Schubert. what Karl met on the roof was a fabrication. have _we_ ever seen the real Johan? it is literally impossible to tell. Johan is something special, because even having him right under our nose means just as much or as little as Johan not being present at all. his identity is still just as obfuscated... and everyone in the entire story is scrambling to try and figure him out.
There's some clues to point to the fact that Johan's interaction with Karl was perhaps not a fabrication at all, highlighting the contradictions between his internal selfs. Johan is practically a living paradox.
@Ai-Spectre0 I see what you're saying, and in a general sense, I agree... but what I mean by this specific instance being a "fabrication" is that it's something he's using as a tool for a purpose. the emotions may be genuine in some capacity, but Johan is still a manipulator in this moment... which, admittedly, may have been a better way to phrase that. thinking back to Jurgens, the serial killer... he was convinced by Johan to kill outside of his usual profile. instead of doing it for pleasurable gratification, this time he was triggered toward violence because he was intentionally reminded of his abusive mother. and Johan orchestrates him ending up in this scenario, after convincing Jurgens that he is genuinely his friend. Johan may be drawing from his own personal emotional knowledge of his own experiences in order to conduct this manipulation, (very likely, once you understand everything Johan has been through), but it is a calculated effort with an intended result that he does achieve in the end. I view his treatment of Karl here in the same way. when Johan walks along the edge of the roof, putting himself on the precipice between life and death with full confidence, I see that as more telling of the way he's approaching this interaction. even Johan's own life can be used as a bargaining chip. even his own emotions and experiences can be viewed as raw materials for whatever he's constructing.
@@ketchumuu I'd say it's anything but simple. the idea with Johan is that, internally, he is at war. this will come into play later, but the entire story of the monster with no name is a story about the internal incompatibility between monster and host. and it's the roiling turmoil of that incompatibility that tears each victim apart in the end... with the exception of the very last one.
Though Johan does have a clear goal, he also has alot of other contradicting goals aswell - mostly due to his personality split. It'll take a while for his goal to fully be revealed, but he's an incredibly complex character (concerning his thoughts, motives, etc) I'm excited to see you continue to react to this series :)
I'm just such a huge fan of Johan as a character. At the beginning we barely saw him but he had a huge presence and it just continues. What is shown to us, Johan isn't really doing anything but everything revolves around him and somehow that makes him more threatening than if we saw him doing a lot of stuff, and so when he does do things they're that much more impactful.
A comment to appease the algorithm gods! The dots have been laid out, and a line is starting to form, but the overriding question is what is Johan's goal. Based on what we know of him now, money is too small, just like how the neo-Nazis' few of Johan was too narrow. It has to be bigger in scope, and something very nihilistic. Johan is manipulating a man who was stated to be so powerful, that a few phone calls could rock the European markets, imagine what Johan could do with that kind of power
Great reaction, as usual. Your stance on Dr. Reichwein is very interesting, although I understand why he asked for wine when he met him for dinner. He wants to see with his own eyes Richard's reactions to having alcohol around, although if I remember correctly, it seems that his favorite alcoholic drink before fighting his alcoholism was not wine but rather whiskey, so it is possible that the appearance of a glass of wine in his field of vision does not affect him at all as soon as he sees it. On the other hand, I understand your position in suspecting him, because Monster has already done the same with apparently good characters who later surprise us by showing us their past or their authentic self, like Mr. Rosso. I can't wait to watch your reaction to the next Monster episode.
The realization that all the cases that seemd to be random and unsolvable and that led you to drinking was actually connected to making some rich guy lonely all for some plan. Then realizing that the same guy who is at minimum by proxy responsible for all this is next to him. Also Johan is only 20 at this point so beyond other random fuckery he spent almost a 4th of his life just making this guy lonley. Maybe how he destroyed Wolfs live he might be doing the same to this guy. Also Johan really hates orphans or he just wants to erase Kinderheim so that he becomes a nobody again. He also potentially killed Karls mom witch is kinda fucked like yeah Karl you get your dad but I killed your mom hopefully I won't kill your dad as well. Johan could be doing this for money as he was trying to figure out how humans relate to money but at the same time this feels beneath him. So far all we can concreatly guess without really speculating is that its either just for the sake of evil or for fun. To be fair to the doctor in universe its about 1950s-1960s so the pshycology standards where a whole heap lower.
I think the psychologist did nothing wrong, he's obviously a smart psychologist and knows what he's doing, i think you were harsh on him lol but a really great reaction, I love Richard's character a lot.

yes, I understand reaching out for Tenma, as he probably knows of Richards cases and him mentioning he had a flash of inspiration. It's the part of Jurgens that seems random, although I can only guess it was that he knew of the voice of god cases and the name Johan popped up there

Bro hated Reichwein so much, he became a bigger villain than Johan to Luke
😂😂
The pleasure of realising that the stories I thought were separate stories are actually one big story is a very tasty treat for my brain!
💯💯💯

@@GOTGames dude it's the greatest anime and manga out there in terms of writing literally

This, at some point you have to stop thinking of yourself as a "recovering addict" if you want to have a normal life
Very true.
For me it was more than this person is the main person encouraging his change, it seemed odd that they would put up an obstacle like this.

It’s obvious that is part of his rehabilitation
honestly the storytelling execution in Monster is the most flawless i have ever seen
I couldn't stop giggling for the way you were bashing Dr. Renhelt in every chance 😂😂
26:01 basically the entire show right there😂😂
Johan to any detective who investigates his case:
So you have chosen death😈😈😈💀💀💀
