@ I beg to differ; I’ve read some pretty good Chinese works. It’s just that, in such a large country, there’s a lot more amateur writers and the cliches run rampant. And the huge media corporations tend to not care so much about quality, they just make it as flashy and feature-bloated as possible.

The most tragic thing about Tai Lung is when he finally opens the scroll and he sees a reflection of himself, he says “It’s nothing!” This shows how little value he had for himself because he was so determined with trying to earn validation from Shifu and becoming the Dragon Warrior that when he was denied his destiny, he was consumed with rage and hatred, especiallyfor himself. Truly a tragic character who really just wanted appreciation from his father figure.

i believe whats also interesting is how he looks AT his reflection, it seems he is reflecting, he understands, "who have i become?" he betrayed everyone and everything he held dear for that power he thought he was owed, and it WAS nothing, he was left with only himself, what was he himself now worth after doing all these bad deeds? He sacrificed everything and when he got the scroll, which was nothing more than a cute message, the man in the mirror is pitiable.

The way I see it like this:
Tai Lung was raised to be the Dragon Warrior. He strove to be someone else, because that’s what he thought he had to be.
Po was trained in a way unique to him. He was trained in his own identity.
The Dragon Warrior can’t be you if you’re not you. Hence why it’s a mirrored scroll.

Yes, he could've easily defeated Tai Lung again, but if he had, Shifu would never learn to accept Po or forgive himself for "creating" Tai Lung, and Po wouldn't have become the Dragon Warrior or stopped loathing himself.

    1. He's incredibly tough. So much crazy happens to him in these movies and barely gets scratched.

I have finally realized what the conversation about 'control' is about; Teaching.
"I cannot make it blossom when it suits me, or make it bear fruit before its time." Oogway is talking about how you can't make someone learn at your pace, only their own.
"I can control when the fruit will fall. And I can control where to plant the seed!" Shifu counters by saying he decides when and how his students learn. And while he is mostly right, one peach (Po) disobeys and falls on his head.
"But no matter what you do, that seed will grow to be a peach tree. You may wish for an apple or an orange, but you will get a peach." And Oogway ends by telling Shifu that people don't change at their core. Tai-Lung was always going to have darkness in him, even if Shifu unknowingly cultivated it, and Po was always going to have a kind heart.

    • @thejaiganticbridge5479
      @thejaiganticbridge5479 Годину тому +2

I love this interpretation, so allow me to add my two cents.
Rather than Tai Lung always being bound to the darkness at his core, what if that darkness grew due to the very fact that Shifu forcefully tried to grow an Apple tree when he was only an Orange.
He was never due to become the Dragon Warrior, yet that is what he was raised to be and that was where he put all of his self worth. Tai Lung was not raised to be the best version of himself, he was raised to be someone else, which is why the Gold Mirror reflective his perceived worthless, because there was no value in being himself.

Monkey, Tiger, Snake, Mantis, Crane; but the traditional martial arts were Tiger, Crane, Leopard, Snake, and Dragon. In fact, originally, the Chinese government was against this movie being shown in China, thinking America couldn'tdo a Kung-Fumovie right, especially one that looked so goofy at first glance. I liked the scroll being blank. They treated the scroll like it was something that would turn someone INTO the Dragon Warrior, like the Dragon Warrior needs the scroll to validate and "christen" them as being a legendary warrior. The Dragon Warrior doesn't need a fancy scroll to make them the Dragon Warrior, the Dragon Warrior IS, there's no outside force that can make it happen, they simply are.

I remember when he was still working on RvB, and there were community rumblings about why a certain character was grouped in with a bunch of "elite" soldiers when he didn't appear to be all that extraordinary, and Monty replied in a thread, pointing out a specific exchange involving that character where he very deftly swaps equipment with another character he's fighting, and despite that other character being way better than him, he still managed to snag a weapon from them and use it to ultimately corner them. Those fight scenes are so well put together.

I love these movies. One of the major themes that I very much appreciate (though it has been argued that the final skadoosh somewhat contradicts it), is best exemplified by the summation of "there is no secret ingredient." All the characters seem to have this assumption of Oogway keeping some secret source of mystic power or something, given how they talk about the Dragon Scroll; even though he keeps insisting that you can only do your best and keep working hard.
Everyone talks about the power "granted" by the Dragon Scroll by describing what the Dragon Warrior is said to be capable of. Nobody ever considers that these are achievements of the master *who would be named* "Dragon Warrior", instead assuming that the Scroll has some secret techniques or mystic power to grant them. Meanwhile, Oogway keeps saying that you have to accept that you cannot control fate or destiny, and simply have to keep trying your hardest and doing your best. The self-acceptance that Po expresses is the closest thing to a "secret ingredient" in the whole thing... except that it ISN'T "secret" at all, because Oogway is doing his damnedest to convey that information the whole time! xD
ALSO: Mr. Ping is a top tier dad. Yup-yup.

the best thing about this movie is undoubtedly the bridge fight between tai lung and the five. literally, the animators went up to their superiors and said they had no idea how to do it, because nothing like it had been done before in 3d animation. they had to figure that shit out on their own, and the result is *amazing*

Oogway's and Shifu's arguments on control were amazing cause neither of them were wrong. Shifu was saying that there are things in the world we can control and that was no illusion, but Oogway was saying that certain things are beyond your control, and it's foolish to try and do that. Like he said, that seed will grow to be a peach try, no matter how much he took care of it, no matter the method of how he took care of it, it would still be a peach tree

The thing about the dragon scroll may be cheesey, but honestly at 37 years old I find it to be true. Keep in mind, to open the scroll you have to he "worthy," both physically and spiritually. You have to have both trained hard and learned fitness and technique (which is why Poe couldn't open it immediately) and you have to still be humble and willing to learn (which is why Tai Lung wasn't worthy).
If you're already at that point...there is no secret ingredient. It's just you.

One of the details I like the most in Kung Fu Panda is the shock on Shifu's face when Po calls him "The Greatest Kung Fu Teacher in all of China!" and he realises how much Po idolises him and the others. Po has spent his entire life looking up to and practically worshipping the Five and Kung Fu Masters and wanting to be like them. It would be like meeting your childhood hero and having them tell you to give up on your dreams and that you'll never achieve them because you're a fat disappointment.
28:50 That's kind of the point. Before being *worthy* to read the Dragon Scroll you first need to train to be ready for it. But if you've trained to the point of being allowed to read the Dragon Scroll then you are already the Dragon Warrior and just need to believe in yourself, your master and your training.

It has Po telling some children who want to learn Kung Fu a story about each of the Furious Five, and something important that they learned in life, which helped them as they grew older and became kung fu masters. Worth watching if you can kind it. Especially for baby Tigress.

A really cool detail is that in the little scene where Mantis practices acupuncture in Po, it's stablished that all his fat doesen't allow him to find the actual vital points, which then becomes the reason why Tai-Lung can't hit him and knock him out like he did with the Furious Five. It's really cool how such a minor joke scene stablishes something so important for the climax

28:40 It makes perfect sense. The secret is that there is no secret. Hard work, constant training, knowing yourself and your limitations, that is what will bring you to the peak of YOUR capabilities. To me that is a great message. That is why the scroll is a golden mirror in which you reflect.
The dragon warrior is a title, not a skill, or a skill set, or a skill level. It is not about "believing in yourself".
Believing in yourself without putting the effort is just pathetic and childish, imo. That is just wishful thinking.
It is not about "You can do anything", it is about "You can improve, and you could do something tomorrow that you cannot do today, you may never reach the goal but you can always walk the path towards it".
And the lesson is not obvious. None of the characters understood it. Only the Dragon Warrior did.

I absolutely loved the final battle. Not just because of the cool fighting. But how every single thing Po used against Tai Lung was what he learned through the movie.
First counter attack, he bounced off the wall after being hit and knocked back into him even harder. The punching bag in the dojo that knocked his tooth out!
Falling down the stairs, thanks to Shifu kicking him down them. He learned how to bounce in ways where he knew how to shift his weight so Tai Lung would be under him!
The noodle cart he tried to drag up the stairs gave him a boost, leading to the pans switching he learned from Shifu's final lesson!
Utilizing fireworks to go faster just like when he made the firework chair in the beginning!
We all know about his cookie climbing ultra instinct mode lol
Then when Tai Lung used the pressure points on Po, they tickled him. We learned they aren't where they are on other people just like when Mantis and Viper tried doing acupuncture!
And finally. Po can use the "power of the dragon scroll", because Po became happy with who he's become. But when Tai Lung saw that all he's sacrificed to get the scroll did nothing but leave him a shell of a man, he became nothing to Po.

A touch I quite love is that the one point Po is confident in himself before his proper training is when the Furious 5 (minus Tigress) are all complimenting his noodles. He doesn't put himself down there, but just praises his dad's cooking instead.
In fact, kung fu doesn't just refer to martial arts, but rather any "art that someone has dedicated themselves to". And Ping, Po's dad, is the only non-martial artist who is a "master of kung fu". His noodle obsession is silly and fun, but, from how the most prestigious individuals in the valley reacted to a dish that apparently isn't as good as his, you know that nobody can do noodles like him.
And for his mastery, he had long since achieved the same enlightenment Oogway hid behind a mythical scroll.

Tai Ling saw himself and said “it’s nothing”. That’s the message of the movie, you are the best you, you can be. To change yourself you must first believe in yourself.
To Tai Lung his strength always lied in the scroll, it was supposed to complete him. So when he saw only himself, “nothing” in the scroll, everything he was and thought he was, shattered. Po on the other-hand had always only known himself and like Tai Lung, believed everything he wanted lied in the scroll. But because he knew who he was, even if it took him time, he could understand the message of the scroll. You might think it’s cheesy but knowing who you are is by no means easy and can take a lifetime to discover.

Shifu gassed him up for so long saying he was the dragon warrior and then he didn't even try to cheer him up or tell him it was okay when he wasn't. Tai-Lung isn't justified but he's understandable and It IS Shifu's fault. I think more people need acknowledge fault as something being a fault. Tai Lung is such an underrated Dreamworks villain.
I love how he fits so neatly into the theme of "self-worth" the movie has.
Like Po, his entire sense of purpose was built around what others thought of him, mainly Shifu. He pushed himself to his physical and mental limit just to make Shifu proud by becoming the Dragon Warrior, only to realise it was all for nothing & Shifu had simply filled his adopted son's head with his own dreams and vanity.
You can even see in the scene where Po lays out his own insecuritied to Shifu, the latter stares off into space for a second; perhaps wondering if this is how all his stundents, even Tai Lung, felt while he trained them
Heck, even Tigress starts to soften up once she realises the kind of inner turmoil Po had and that her comments to him about not taking Kung Fu seriously, really hurt him.
And the moment Tai Lung opens the Dragon Scroll and says "It's nothing!" is like the perfect metaphor for his character. He genuinely believes he's nothing deep down and its what fuels his rage.
