- Sit in my kitchen with me while I step you though the process of making shell trinket dishes. There are tutorials and "how to's" all over the internet, but even after watching and reading lots of them, I still couldn't get the results I wanted. After playing around with different materials and methods, I finally got the hang of it. I'm sharing those tips and tricks here for those who might be feeling crafty but like a more detailed tutorial (insert...it's a little long, but it is my first video)

I am no longer using the flat sheet tape, I had a few issues with it tearing the label on champagne bottles
Love to decorate the shells! I’ve even used small shells and added a magnet to the back for the fridge! So relaxing!
Love this!
I LOVE the way your trinket dishes worked out. They look really classy and cool. Thank you for doing such a great demonstration of how to put the napkin paper on the inside of the oyster shells. Love from Amanda Jones in Australia
Just now seeing this but thanks so very much for the kind words!
Gretchen, I've watched all of your videos, and love every one! I'm from North Carolina, too! My island love is Topsail Island. Now my husband and I own a home on Lake Wylie, Charlotte. (grandchildren live in Charlotte). Lake Wylei has mussels; haven't decoupaged them yet. I've decoupaged a map of TI in an oyster shell, put in on a beaded necklace. Looks great, and keeps me "close to TI"!
That is awesome, thanks for your kind words 😊. Love our island! I'm sure being near your grandchildren is wonderful!
Great tutorial with verbal instructions! Keep up the good work! Love your stuff! Have a great day!
Thank you! Cheers!
The things you taught me are great! They look so pretty!
I'm so glad!
I am about to begin decoupaging for my first time today! Thanks for sharing this video with everyone. Hopefully I can manage to come up with something half decent. We'll see! 😏
Don't give up! I always say start with your least favorite shells 😊...that way you can practice on those!
Fabulous tutorial, thank you for all the wonderful tips you gave as you went along.
You are most welcome, I really appreciate the kind words!
Actually, I really love the dark one with the silver. Quite unique!❤
Thanks so much.
And forgot to mention that Suzanne gave me the shell. Thank you! I love it!
You are most welcome, it was the least I could do after stealing her napkins 😊
Thank you for taking the time to do this, Gretchen. It was very helpful!
Great video Gretchen. Very helpful on some of the more detailed items which is what I needed. Just wish I had those Carolina size oyster shells here in Maine to work with!
Thanks for the kind words. I watched so many tutorials and mine were still awful, so I wanted to make sure I really took the time to share all the tiny little things that helped take mine to the next level. I know not everyone likes that, I just found it so frustrating that there were detail I knew must be missing 🤣
Did a great job. Thanks for showing your talent.
Thanks for watching!
Great job Gretchen, thanks for the tutorial! 🌟💝👏👏👏
Thank you so much for making this video! What a fun and beautiful craft!!!
These turned out beautifully. Thanks for sharing your tips and tricks!
You are so welcome!
Loved the photos at the end which really showed what you had done, otherwise I found it quite difficult to see from the distance of the camera to where you were standing. They look beautiful and I’d like to have a go. Thanks to a lady in her kitchen 😊
Sorry about that. It was the very first video I had ever done and I thought I was doing it for about 10 people in a shelling group I'm in. I've learned a lot since then and tried to improve what people see.
Hi Gretchen! I’ve enjoyed your videos and learned so much. Really like those blue and white napkins!
Makes me so happy you have watched! And yes, those blue and white napkins are just fabulous 😊😊
What a doll you are!! So pretty and I really enjoyed your video! I'm hooked!! Thanks
We’ll that is awfully sweet of you to say! I’m so glad it was helpful
Nice video. Good tidbits of information!
Thanks so much for the instructions! Love the project!
You are so welcome!
I can see decoupage shells with monogramed tissue paper as wedding favors. #weddingfavors
Absolutely!!
Hi. Loved your video! Thank you. So pretty. I know you said you use Testor's Enamel. All of their paints have a number that coincides with the exact color. I wonder if you are able to tell me the name of the gold paint on the bottle along with the corresponding number please.
So sorry I'm just now seeing this for some reason. Testors Null 1144TT Enamel Paint, 1/4 oz Glass Bottle, Gold is the full description. Hope that helps. I also love the Krylon K09901A00 Leafing Pen in Gold.
Beautiful! I order my shells from Etsy!
Thanks so much!
Great Video!! I am wondering if I can put resin on instead of the Mod Podge on top coat! And also put resin over the Gold edge.
Just now seeing this but if you tried let me know how it worked.
Thank you for your tutorials! Do you remember the brand of the napkins with the 4 Audubon cranes? I have the art in my home and would love to decouple them.
Caspari, sorry about delay in seeing this!
I absolutely love your videos and am now a Follower. I have just one question, where do you get your napkins and what brand do you use? Thank you for all hour amazing videos!
Thanks so much 😊 I use Caspari most. But there are lots of brands that hold up, they just tend to be my favorites! I pick up things at local shops as well.
Question, would you recommend painting the inside of the black oyster shell white? And did you paint the outside of the shells? Love your video!
So sorry, this review was held and I'm just now seeing it! Thanks for the kind words and yes, I paint the inside of black shells white but don't paint the outside. I leave the outside of all my shells natural!
Great video! I tried this before and the paint just peeled off mine. How do you prep or clean the shells?
Either dawn and warm water or if I feel like there is any residue left I’ll wipe down with rubbing alcohol. Hope that helps.
Question about using these as ring catchers. Does just the midge podge hold up as a top coat when using these little gems? You don't show any other top coat. I have some old shells I'm going to give this a try. Love how yours look!
Sorry for the delay in seeing this! I used mod podge on these and have had them in my bathroom and had no problem at all with the finish. In most of my other projects (shown in other tutorials) I use duraclear gloss varnish. (I also use several different finishes of that product) Hope you made some and had fun!
Sorry just seeing this! Yes, I have no problem with them being in my bathroom near my sink. If concerned duraclear is a great varnish that would make sure no issues with the mod podge and water.
Gretchen-what do you do to prepare the shells prior to painting them? (How do you get rid of the fish smell?)
The shells that I collect from the beach never smell. I know some use a bleach solution. To prep mine I simply soak them in hot water with dawn.
Great tutorial! Are you on social media or any shop sites like Etsy or Shopify?
Thanks so much ☺️. I am not, I do some selling at a small shop in Cincinnati. I post all my projects (if you have subscribed you can see my other tutorials) on instagram @thegiftedshop. I know that is misleading, I used to have a shop in Cincinnati years ago, but no longer do.
Tips on avoiding streaks in the paint finish? Is it brush quality? Or amount of paint applied?
It is likely how much is applied but perhaps it is the type of paint used or the brush? Sometimes I like only one, just depends on the look you want.
Thx for giving me the link on FB.
Most welcome!
Hi again, Gretchen! I don’t know if you saw my comment above asking where you found the Audubon birds napkin. Now I have 2 more questions.
1..Do you also paint the backs of your shells in the golden enamel?
2. What is your procedure for cleaning the shells and getting rid of the smell? I’ve done multiple steps (24 hr. soak, 3 hr. beach/water soak, washing with dish soap then drying in sun), but they still smell. Help please!
Sorry, for some reason the comments got stuck in a "hold" spot. The Audubon napkin was from Caspari, I've had it for some time, not sure if they still have. Hmm, I've never had issues with the smell, I find mine in the beach but they typically are up on the beach. As I type this won't let me see your comment but one idea is to boil them if you have not done that and then put in the sun?
I don't paint the backs I leave them natural but you could.
Also, have a home on a North Carolina Island - Topsail Island. What Island do you call home? Thank you for the video.
Bald Head Island ❤️
Do you add a glue coating over the gold? Also, have you ever sprayed them with a sealant?
I don't, the DuraClear seems to seal it well enough. (even if they get wet) I don't do a coat over the gold leafing pen, I've never had issues with it.
How do you clean the shells before you begin?
I simply soak them in a bucket of hot soapy water with a little dawn. You can soak in bleach if desired but I haven't found it necessary.
Where is the best place to find the oyster shells
I just find mine on the beach in NC. I know lots of people have shared they have reached out to local restaurants in their area that sell oysters and asked if they'll save some for them. You could also purchase online as well.
What paint did you use for the metallics?
I either use Testors gold paint or a Krylon gold leafing pen.
It’s hard to see what your doing, better if closer to the camera. Good verbal instructions. Thank you
Yes, my more recent videos have improved, this was my very first and I thought it would only be seen by a handful of North Carolina seashells, so didn't have any idea what I was doing. I am planning on doing an updated video soon.
How do you clean of your brush after the gold paint?
Testors enamel thinner and brush cleaner is what I use. 😊
Why do you use an enamel on the edge instead of an acrylic?
I like the intensity of the metallic shine. Hope that helps!
What was the paint you used ? Thx
Testor’s Enamel
