I love making beautiful things. When I do, I get so excited, I can't keep it to myself. I want others to experience the same sense of satisfaction for themselves. My goal is to share all of the tips and tricks I've learned along the way. I take the time to hash them out, so you don't have to. And while I really enjoy being crafty, I don't want what I make to stand out as looking "crafty". I don't believe crafting needs to be intimidating, you just need someone to show you the way and help make it fun. Let's make something beautiful, together.

Decoupage Shell Trinket Dish Tutorial SD 480p
Переглядів 37 тис.2 роки тому
Sit in my kitchen with me while I step you though the process of making shell trinket dishes. There are tutorials and "how to's" all over the internet, but even after watching and reading lots of them, I still couldn't get the results I wanted. After playing around with different materials and methods, I finally got the hang of it. I'm sharing those tips and tricks here for those who might be f...
Where do you get your trees?
These I purchased at HomeGoods. I've worked with wood, resin, paper and ceramic, just picking them up here and there.
Do you use mod lodge at all or just the dura gloss
I should make that more clear, I just just DuraClear now for all layers on most projects 😊
Those are so pretty. Thankyou for sharing
You are so welcome!
I really found your post tutorial helpful and informative. You covered every aspect of detail. I’m looking forward to learning more from you.
So glad it was helpful!
Very nice thanks
Thanks so much! 🙏🏼
You are wonder!!!
Thanks so much 😊
Love your in product but your camera angle/view is impossible. Please let us see clearly what you are doing 😊
I hear you, this was my second video, I purchased a camera mount for all subsequent videos.
what a great idea, thank you for sharing, have liked and subscribed, nice job!
Thanks for subscribing, happy you enjoyed the video!
You should do the wall behind you in that blue rose napkin decoupage, it would be much more than it is now!
Ha! It's my craft room but we are moving in six months and they buyers prefer it neutral! 😊
Very pretty!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much, this video is a host of great how-to, the labeling of the lazy Susan to keep track is clever! I'm off to put your lesson to work!
So glad it was helpful and you are off to decoupage your own pumpkin! Thanks for the kind words!
Are these cocktail or luncheon size napkins?
These were luncheon. The cocktail in this design are fun but the colors are a bit more muted.
Were did you get the small sanding blocks
Amazon...here is an associate link. amzn.to/3UdVEHm
Hello Gretchen, what a fun project. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
You are so welcome! 😊
This is beautiful and I love your teaching style, thanks
You are so welcome 🙏🏼
I cannot stop looking at your trees. They make me so happy. You are a great instructor.
Wow, thank you 😊
Wow, thank you
Beautifully crafted!
Thank you! 😊
How do you cut the napkins? Mine are shredding 😢
Hmm...shredding when you cut them! I also often use a watercolor pen to outline what I want and separate them that way. If you watch the Easter egg tutorial it shows that method. I often keep them with the back layers prior to cutting so they are a little thicker, and use very sharp fabric scissors. High quality napkins make a difference as well. Hope some of that is helpful! I'm sure that is super frustrating!!
they're lovely except sadly you didn't show the pumpkin and what you were doing until 18 minutes in !
So sorry, this was only my second video, made two years ago I'm not a professional so there was a learning curve. I've learned a lot in the last two years. I understand you likely won't watch others but you look at subsequent videos I purchased a camera mount which gives a great view of the project.
@@craftingwithgretchen good to know ! this is the first time you showed up in my feed so I subscribed as I wanted to see what else you had to offer keep well
Great job!! I'm glad you showed your work after a while. Thank you!!
Thanks for watching and your kind words! It was only my second video so I had a bit of a learning curve, thanks for hanging in there. 😉
@craftingwithgretchen Second video, oh my, you did great!! My 2nd one, you don't even want to know. It was such a mess! Keep up the great job, your work it stunning.
Gretchen, I've watched all of your videos, and love every one! I'm from North Carolina, too! My island love is Topsail Island. Now my husband and I own a home on Lake Wylie, Charlotte. (grandchildren live in Charlotte). Lake Wylei has mussels; haven't decoupaged them yet. I've decoupaged a map of TI in an oyster shell, put in on a beaded necklace. Looks great, and keeps me "close to TI"!
That is awesome, thanks for your kind words 😊. Love our island! I'm sure being near your grandchildren is wonderful!
Hi Gretchen! This is beautiful and I plan on doing some with my daughter this weekend. One question- are you painting the varnish on first and also using it on the Saran Wrap after the napkin is on? I have modpodge so I'm wondering if I should use that for painting on the napkin as well as over top? Does it matter?
Love hearing you will be doing it with your daughter! I use DuraClear as both the glue on the first layer and then the varnish on subsequent layers. You can use Mod Podge, I just find that I have better control and less wrinkles and creases when I use DuraClear, hope that helps. 😊
Where do you get the trees??
These I got from HomeGoods but they can sometimes also be found in shops like Target.
Thank you for keeping the real process real. Being picky is not insane, but respecting your time, & effort to make your vision exactly how it’s Supposed to turn out. Why bother investing this love for a mediocre outcome. I really appreciated the tricks you taught, in order to keep oneself peaceful. I definitely subscribed.
My goal is to make something gorgeous that I'm super proud of and you are correct, that takes some time but is so worth it in the end! Thanks for the encouragement!
Can you set the camera so we can see the work on the pumpkin? Watching the side of the pumpkin that isn’t being worked on is not so helpful. Your explanation are good but your tutorial would be so much better if we could see the side your working on.
Yes, sorry, this was only my second video and I am not a professional so there was a learning curve. I purchased a camera mount and subsequent videos are taped using that. Hope you found what you were looking for in another tutorial.
Hi Gretchen, I see that you have come a long way since 2 years ago when you used to cut your napkins with scissors. Me too. Ha, ha. I absolutely love your videos and I hope that you will be making them on regular basis. Thank you for all the hints.
Thank you so much! I still cut but yes, continue to improve and evolve 🤣
@@craftingwithgretchen We all evolve. Ha, ha. I usually sponge the paint on my object, so it has a textured effect, this way cut or tear my napkin, the edges do not show through so much. Keep on making the videos, even if the topics are the same, because with each video, you learn something new. Thank you.
@@craftingwithgretchen In the end, we always use what works in the particular situation and particular project. Cheers.
Gretchen, this is absolutely top notch. I have not decoupaged pumpkins, but your hints are super helpful for any round surface. I actually decoupage lampshades with paper napkins and try to match the pattern on the "drum" lampshades. I like how the light shines through the napkins. Thank you.
So glad you found it helpful, I have always been afraid of doing lampshades thinking every flaw would show up when you turn it one 😊
@@craftingwithgretchen Hello Gretchen. If you want to decoupage lampshades, I recommend that you get some cheap used ones from Goodwill or garage sale or another thrift store to practice on at first. The ones with the panels are easier than the drum shape ones because you only one one panel to deal with at a time and Caspari "towel" napkins are big enough for most lampshades. Also, depending on your style, I always get the ones with light fabric because the pattern will get lost on the dark fabric. Now, the next thing to do is to experiment. My problem is that some glues/varnishes/topcoats bleed through to the inner fabric. I always made lampshades only for me, so I didn't experiment to see which adhesives do NOT bleed through. It probably depends on the amount of adhesive put on. I.e., put very thin, light coats. Then the adhesive bleeds through to the inner fabric, the lampshades look great from the outside, but if you look underneath, you will see the two fabrics stuck together. If you have a plastic backing, this will not be a problem. Don't worry about the wrinkles on the napkin because they will happen and a lot of them. However, they do not show from a distance. Actually, they look nice. They have a wrinkled fabric effect. The feel is that of plastic. I have some photos of my decoupaged lampshades on my insta gram. When you get there, just look up my user name from here but for the number use "13". And, if you figure out a way of decoupaging lamp shades without bleed through, please create a video. Thank you.
@@craftingwithgretchen One day you will have the courage to do it. Remember, you can always find a cheap lampshade in a thrift store or a garage sale and just go for it. I bet it will be awesome!
What is SOFT EYES ?
Soft eyes just means to not be so overly focused on one aspect that you don't see the contributing factors. Looking at things holistically rather than using laser focus on each individual area or flaw.
Great tutorial and love the pumpkins!
Thanks so much 😊
I’m getting ready to do this right now so glad I found your video😊
So glad hope it was helpful!
Do you happen to have a link for the napkins? Doesnt hsve to be the same ones but I'm not sure where to find them.
amzn.to/3YespFV Amazon carries them, here's a link 😊
@@craftingwithgretchen appreciate it! Thank you so much!
Just found you on UA-cam! Great video and ideas! New subscriber now too btw!

👍👍👍👍👍✅
🤣 thanks so much!
Those are the most beautiful pumpkins I have ever seen. I am definitely going to try your technique. STUNNING! TFS! 🥰👍
Thanks so much 😊
I'm a new subscriber from Wisconsin. I love your decoupaged Christmas Trees.
Welcome!! Thanks for subscribing and the kind words!
Thank you so much I think these are the most beautiful pumpkins I’ve ever seen and I will be making some for my house. Many blessings to you and yours🌹
You are most welcome! I hope you have so much fun creating them 😊
How do you determine the width of the strips you want to use?
It depends on the size of the object, I want it small enough to keep from creasing but want to cover a decent amount of the surface. If using strips I try to find a spot that it will be easy to camouflage the seam. i.e. not right in the middle of the primary image. Hope that makes sense. 😊
You can get the flat tree's too🎉🎉🎉
Yes I did a tall flat tree and it was super fun! Thanks for mentioning!
I love your work ❤
Thank you so much 😀
Very pretty- where do you get your napkins?
Thanks 😊 Most of these are Caspari and I purchased them online.
@@craftingwithgretchenyou can sometimes find them at home goods or t.j Maxx or Marshalls as well
I hope you create more videos. It appears that these are 1 or 2 years old. You have a gift for explaining and demonstrating, while keeping the results classic and un-fussy. No stress but beautiful results.
😊 Thank you. I just did one a week or so ago for flower pots my newest since the Champagne bottle.
Click on “more” for a description of what she is using.
Thanks for being so helpful! 😊
We really can't see what you're doing but you explain things well
Yes sorry about that, it was only my second video and I hadn't gotten a camera mount as I'm not a professional! There was a learning curve for sure.
Very nice, more detail and tips that are very good! Thanks❤
Thanks so much ❤️
Hello Gretchen. I absolutely love everything you have done. You are so creative and generous to share your talent. ❤I have friend a few bottles and have had a couple of friends ask if I could make some for them. Do you mind sharing whether or not you sell them and if so…how much do you charge? And, do you have them purchase their own bottle or do you provide it in the cost. Thank you so much!
Hi there! Thanks for the kind words! I do sell. I've primarily had them provide the bottle but also have had them reimburse me for cost plus tax, as well. Charges depend completely on the design and how custom it is. I've charged everywhere from $50 to $125 for design. In addition to bottle cost. (If they were for friends may be lower than that)
Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly Gretchen. I appreciate it so much ❤
Love the way you teach
Thanks so much 😊
Gretchen your work is absolutely gorgeous!! It’s amazing that you take a simple object and a napkin and end up with a stunning work of art!! Thank you Gretchen!!💜💜💜
Thank you so much! I feel the same way, it's hard to express that, decoupage is wonderful for more than a 2nd grade school project!
Your pumpkin designs are so beautiful!! Great tutorial!! Thank you for all the great information and tips for making a beautiful pumpkin like yours!! I’d love to give it a try!! 💜💜💜
You are so kind! It's so fun but admittedly also addictive 😊
🙌🎄💙🎄❤🎄💚🎄💛🎄🧡🎄💙👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Q re your fave brushes…they are only available now through 3rd party sellers. Any other suggestions? And your top coat for these- did you use the same glue varnish or the Triple thick? Thanks!
Hmm... let me see if other brand options. On the varnish, I didn't use triple thick, I do either use several coats of gloss or one final coat of high gloss. Triple thick on the bottles has too much opportunity to create drip marks.
