    For anyone wondering about succulents in LECA, yes, of course you can grow them in LECA as a substrate, considering they can root into anything… they’ll root into the carpet if leaf cuttings fall off, lol. I just think something like Pon is more beneficial for them, and minus the water. So…yes grow succulents in LECA or Pon, but in a standard pot and water only when needed. With heavily diluted nutrient solution, because they’re not in soil… Long story short, use the substrate, but just don’t do semi hydro for them. The catch with succulents is, sadly, the water reservoir! They will rot; if not right away, in time… they can’t handle a reservoir of water & concentrated pool of nutrients at their roots. They don’t need the fertilization or the hydration that badly. They may initially thrive but succulents tend to do REALLY well, say, after a few days of heavy rain; inevitably, some will do TOO well at soaking up the water and rot.
    I’d say save your valuable LECA for plants that thrive in a semi hydro environment.
    Sure, you can rehydrate dried succulent cuttings in water (for a day or several), and they’ll root out great; it’s not a long-term thing for them! It’s not what they desire. So then…why waste the LECA ya know? Succulent leaves are like a camel’s hump. Their genetics make them a living reservoir! If you look at something like a ponytail palm (Beaucarnea sp.) or Madagascar palm (Pachypodium), anything with a caudex especially is a great example of water storage. In times of dry weather, they really rely on their own energy stores. So the semi hydro setup leads to mushy, rotten succulents. Sorry for the long winded rant hahaha

    A hook? I watch because of the content. What does Y/T want - a singing, dancing Norah? I don’t see any other plant channels with anything different than the title.
    I live in the gloomy N.E. Of Scotland - (latitude the same as Moscow). I have my grow light on from 6am until 8.30 pm. When the clocks change, I will stop at 8pm. Why? Because if it’s too bright, I can’t relax so I’m sure the plants can’t either🤔 Grow lights have made a WORLD of difference to my plants and I can now go into Winter knowing that my babes will be happy👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
    Here’s a giggle for you Norah. I moved all my special plants into one room and have started drying my smalls on the radiator there. I figure that it will raise the humidity, so, 2 birds with 1 stone… 😂
    Ooooo, a question for you. Would you move a Ficus Tineke that has been rooted in water, into Leca?

    • @TheLecaQueen
      @TheLecaQueen  2 роки тому +1

      You certainly gave me a giggle. I love the ingenuity, of drying your smalls 🤣🤣🤣. Whatever raises that humidity! I love growlights and can not speak highly enough about them. They are such a game changer. About your Ficus, yeah into leca it goes! And yes, YT does want a singing, dancing Nora! Not sure my kids would like that!🤣🤣🤣

      I would be so sad if the Q&A’s stopped! Nobody else can answer our questions like you do because they don’t go into any detail. If I wanted generic and boring, I would go to Wiki🙄😉

    Once again your information is so on point. Proof that being a “plant parent “ is not as easy as some folks think. The one thing I don’t regret is transferring my plants from soil to Leca. This was so informative. I bought a black velvet off a local fb plant lady. She mentioned it was in leca and I could buy as is or she could sell bare root. I choose leca and it was best decision. She gave me a jar of nutrient solution to get me started and now I have all my alocasias in leca. The newest leaf in leca is huge. It’s a slow process for now but maybe in near future I’ll move my Hoyas. Your baby is adorable.

    Hi plant friend!! I haven't grown any succulents in Leca before, but I have grown succulents in Lechuza pon and with a lot of success so I don't see why Leca wouldn't work also. For those who are interested, I think your best bet is to water propagate and then transfer into your Leca or pon. I've grown them in self-watering pots and the roots have gone crazy! I've never seen succulent roots grow the way that they have for me after using semi-hydro. I don't typically use the water reservoir system (although I have at times without issue) and will just give them a flush when I notice the leaves are starting to wrinkle. If you want to use a clear vessel then I would suggest using clear plastic cups and making a few holes at the bottom, especially since most succulents are fairly small and wouldn't need a standard-sized pot. Nora, I think you do a great job at teaching and showing people that they shouldn't ever be afraid to experiment with new things, especially when it comes to plants. Experimenting through trial and error is the only way you are truly going to learn and start to see any results!

      Hello Zack, I truly appreciate the long and thoughtful contribution. I have certainly taken a few things away from your comment as I am sure many others have and will. Thank you. Your zz plant looks amazing! I'm just wondering. I know some people put sugar into cut flower water. Can glucose powder or sugar be added to the water used to water plants?

    • @TheLecaQueen
      @TheLecaQueen  2 роки тому

      Hello, thank you. I love my ZZs. I grow my plants in leca and they need specific nutrition. I would not put sugar as a plant does not use sugar in the sense that we know to grow. I would recommend only using products that have been manufactured for plants as the elements that the plant needs are in the correct proportions. Check out this video where I talk about plant nutrition.

    Hello TheLecaQueen!
    My plants are in front of a window. At night a latern pole from the street shines on them. Is this bad and does it prevent the glucose making?

      Hey Dorethea, I hope you are good. You probably can not find it in the US but ask the hydroponics shops for nutrients that help blooming or flowering and they should be able to help you.

    One more thing… it’s not semi-hydro, but for succulents, I say sphagnum moss is the best. And for Peperomia and bromeliads too. And all aroids hahaha. But seriously. Let it dry out, between waterings, and it’s the ideal aerated yet moisture-retaining substrate.

      Thanks Erik. What vessel do you put your moss and plant combo and how dry is dry?

      I just bought a pepperomia piccolo.i did not realize it is a semi succulent and I don't have much success with them. I can't seem to get the watering correct. It is currently in the nursery pot with what looks like just soil. Would you advise potting it into a new mix with spagnum moss. As it's now November and 20° c when my heating is off I'm not sure if I should atm..

    How did you convert your Hoya Compacta? I've had success when I transferred one Vine to leca , but I tried a whole plant and it died. I have a small variegated Compacta and I want it in leca but if I lose it I can't afford to just replace it. So I have one shot .. help😢

    Sooo I only have my plants under their grow lights for about 8 hours, is that bad? I turn them on when I wake up and turn them off during dusk. Also I have a instead aurea in leca and it’s doing very very well to the point that the roots are trying to climb out of the self watering pot 😂

    I have a question. How do you keep the leaves so clean and free of dust? Do you wipe them down regularly or spray them off in the shower? I can't imagine trying to stay on top of so many large plants without them growing cobwebs and dust bunnies lol. 🪴🍃

    • @TheLecaQueen

      Hey Vanissa! Everytime I am flushing I give the plants a shower and wash the leaves. I could not clean those leaves one by one!😁😂😂
