Hi Queen! That's a great experiment. I have done the same just out of frustration when roots didn't look great with my hoyas not knowing what would happen. I've only cut down some of the roots on my Philos. Cutting the roots did not affect the plants, they're doing well. Every plant I buy, I immediately dump the soil, cut all roots, leaving a small nub. I put the cutting in my fish tank. In two weeks, nice solid water roots and ready for leca. No time to waste with old soil roots.
Plants are so adaptable and they definitely do send signals to regrow new roots, stems or leaves whenever they're pruned back. I treat my aquarium plants the same way cutting off leaves and roots. It helps them adapt to growing under water without as much rotting bits coming off as they change themselves to live in that environment. I think it also helps them direct their energy to produce more new growth instead of hanging on to the old growth. It's fascinating!
I use this method when I convert plants from soil to growing hydroponically with my fish! I leave the teeniest but of root, a few millimeters, to get it started, but then I let it develop its own water roots. The only trouble I’ve had is that sometimes the new developing leaf can get stunted. Worst case you can make a little cut or two to prompt it to make a new growth point, if your apical growth doesn’t recover.
That is so interesting. It makes sense to take all the roots off and let the plant develop new leca roots. I’ve often heard about people using leca to strike new cuttings so it’s much the same situation. I grow a few orchids and it is very common for the old roots to die off anyway when transitioning to leca so once again it makes sense to allow the plant to develop new roots. This is definitely something I will be keeping in mind. Thanks Nora for sharing this experiment.

Thanks for sharing the experiment. Personally I would prefer to remove all the old roots in order to avoid having root rot for the soil roots. If the plant is healthy, new water roots will appear. I have my pots and LECA ready, procrastinating a little to start my first conversion!!! Again, thank you!
This was so interesting, great experiment! Whenever I get around to transferring a plant from soil to LECA, I would be inclined to get rid of all the soil roots. I’ve just recently started my first ever LECA plants. I started them from cuttings that I rooted in water.

Hi Nora! Good one! 🙂 I did chop out the roots of my Philodendron Ceylon - when the long method did not produce any new roots for more than a month. Out of desperation. It worked well in the end. Not sure I would do it again though! My (plant) weak heart may not be able to handle it! 😀 😀

Woow that's is sooo interesting! If it works with no roots, because you cut they off, than you can put plant cuttings direct in leca. That's what i think. What is with old plants. I read and hear, don't do that with old big plants. But if cutting the roots, that must work for this too, so i think.
I was truly shocked. I did not expect to see that result. I would not do it with a bigger plant for sure, I think, not yet anyway, who knows! Maybe another experiment is on the cards!
Wow. That's new on UA-cam. I can share one similar thing happened with howarthia succulent of mine. Since my howarthia got root rot, I got rid of all it's roots. I waited it bare root hoping it will grow roots. It didn't. So after 2 weeks, I put it over soil and misted it. After about 1 month, I went to check by taking off soil, I couldn't pull it. I knew roots developed. So guys even succulents with no roots have hope. Hahaha

I'm experimenting with cutting all the roots off a ZZ plants. I'll let you know how I go. I put it in a glass jar with no holes so did want to have to deal with rotting roots. Wish me luck. Great timing with this video, as I've been stressing I did the wrong thing
Great idea to conduct this experiment. I wonder had you supplied more water with nutrients to actually cover the plant roots initially, if the results would’ve been different. I’ve done this with monstera and I’ve had new roots growing in a week with no loss to old root system. Of course considering that monstera is much easier to propagate.
Awesome video! I will definitely try cutting off roots and using rooting hormone solution - I currently don't have any but will now look for some:) I recall learning that plant hormones dictate all cellular activities including the growth of roots. I imagine that removing all the growing tips alters the hormone balance and causes a certain set of actions assuming the plant has enough energy stored to use for those actions. In your case, I think you are providing nutrients and also hormones. For the plant with the (mostly) full roots left intact, the hormones may not be accepted by the appropriate cells as it is experiencing root death and dealing with whatever hormones that is producing. It is all very interesting and I'm so glad you did this experiment and shared the results! I would be curious to see if a 3rd plant would have provided even more info for comparison: cutting the roots off, adding nutrients, but adding no hormones.

I prefer to start with fresh roots so if I haven’t propagated the plant in water, then I remove the roots if possible in some cases, I have switched to a soil mix and then down the road switched it to us so that there’s a transition if the plant may not react well to a quick switch
Honestly, the conclusion you're goving while asking for our opinions seems the most likely (and so well put by you!). I've been experimenting with Leca and cuttings and noticed similar behavior on different plant species

Am a recent leca convert. This looks like a great method. Can this be done for roots that have turned green in leva ( I put them in near transparent containers). Also one of the Agalonema plants in Leca keeps getting brown spots on the leaves like a fungal infection. What could be a possible solution. Thanks
Oh my queen i have a interesting information for you. I try it and it works really well. I do it with a couple of stem cuttings of monstera variegata. Use your aroid mix, fill it with water, put the cuttings in the mix. Fill the water, every area of your aroid mix must be under water! Than put it on a heating mat. I know it is a little bit dangerous (i put the cutting area in wax), but i get a great root grow..... aaand the plant must produce a faster root growth because the water go away with the help of the heating mat. I do it in a biiig plastic bottle. Now i think, what if we can do it with leca. Yes it looks a little bit weird, but for people they have fear, it is a technique between, rooting in water and leca. Perhaps it is a technique for you my queen.:-)
I did this experiment without even realizing it... I repotted all my soil plants to Leca, but apparently didn't get all the soil off their roots, because the large majority of my plants are declining with root rot. So I'm breaking the "don't take the plant out of the Leca" rule, and taking all the rotted roots off, and trying again. Particularly worried about my grandmother/mother's Christmas cactus offspring, 'cause I really don't want to lose that one!!
It focused it’s energy on creating new roots instead of growth on thr one with no roots. the one with roots left on probabaly got stressed from the soil roots rotting …
Dear Nora, what do you think for the idea to COMBINE your LONG METHOD with the NO ROOTS METHOD? I am about to transfer some grown ups from soil to pumice snd they are currently sitting in plain water. So, I think I might get rid of (most of,) the soil roots and treat them more or less like cuttings giving them a roots stimulant and also keep spraying their leaves with Growth Technology Clonex Mist till they grow adequate water roots. And then, pot them up in pumice using your excellent method. Basically I aim at trying the long method in 2 ways: a,) with most of the soil roots on, b) with almost all the soil roots off. Watching your videos is gorgeously addictive 😂❤❤❤ THANS A LOT!!!
First of all, I am going to say I LOVE THIS!!!! I love where you are going with this. I don't think I have done that actually, if I have I can't remember. I think it might work. If I did that I would definitely use an air stone and oxygenate the solution and keep the plant really warm, humid and lit up!!! I am tempted to do this now!! Exciting. Please keep me posted.

@@TheLecaQueen This is what I'm doing and all my plants seem to be doing great so far! 😄 I've not put any in LECA yet, but they're all growing water roots and many are almost 2 inches with secondary roots. I'm also not using nutrients right now (I need to figure out the PH first) just Root Juice and tap water changed once a week. In terms of oxygenating, I've got some diluted hydrogen peroxide that I could use, but I've not needed to so far. The plants I'm trying are: • Calathea White Fusion - Notoriously dramatic, wasn't expecting this to do well, but it's actually doing the best of any of them! It's putting out so many new leaves too! • Purple Shamrock (Oxalis triangularis) • Philodendron Pink Princess • Tradescanthia Nanouk • Peperomia Red Log • Sand Rose (Anacampseros Rufescens) • Crassula Buddha's Temple • Hawthoria attenuata • Lucky Bamboo cuttings • Scarlet Star (Guzmania Bromeliaceae) • Bloodleaf (Iresene Herbstii) Some have been in water for a couple of months, some a couple of weeks. If people are interested I can update how they're doing later on, either when I add nutrients or when I put them in LECA. 😊
Can i use stem cuttings, they have no roots (for example because the plant lost to much leaves, and the stem area i cut have no roots), to put it in leca? They should produce roots too? I get a sad melanochrysum before weeks. And i think to try, but i want ask, before i do it.
Great Experiment!!! Loved the results. I was wondering about cutting my Monstera and starting a new Larger plant. My plants maybe 8 months old. But close to 4 feet already and I only have room for maybe 2-3 more leaves on this pole. If I cut the top off can I make a larger plant from the top cutting? Do I have the right idea?
I've put my philodendron Xanadu in leca and nutrient solution for about 3-4 weeks but the plant is becoming soft and some leaves are turning brown ....what am I supposed to do now ?😭

Hey Queen! I know this video is old so I'm really hoping you see this lol but would or should you do the same for alocasia? I want to transfer mine to leca and I'm not sure if I should cut or leave the roota
My theory is that, since LECA is a semi-hydro setup, the soil roots can treat the LECA as a normal potting medium with extra aeration just so long as those soil roots aren't sitting in the water itself, and will start to develop water roots only once the roots start growing into the nutrient solution. I don't think transferring to LECA has created a hostile environment for those roots so long as you don't fill the nutrient solution up to the point those soil roots are submerged.
And then I push play and there's more information. I suppose given that the soil roots did mostly rot, it's more like the phenomenon where you cut your plant back and it grows two new stems in its place. You cut the roots back and so, to adapt in what it's identified as a more hostile environment, the plant has generated more new roots to increase its chances of survival in an environment where roots can just disappear.
If I had 2 of the same plant I'd probs do the same. But if I have only 1 (just bought a Florida Ghost from my local Flower Power) and am too chicken to cut off all of its roots. I'm impressed with your one with no roots. So, thinking more on it I will cut the roots off and if it dies I can just go and buy me another one ( they were only about 25 bucks!) 😆
I have one aglaonema that has soil roots and it isn't growing leca roots. May be I will cut all its soil roots and see if miracle happens in my home. Hahaha

Now that is an experiment I can get behind. I reckon it may take a little longer to root without the hormone but it would still root.

And then, pot them up in pumice using your excellent method. Basically I aim at trying the long method in 2 ways: a,) with most of the soil roots on, b) with almost all the soil roots off.

First of all, I am going to say I LOVE THIS!!!! I love where you are going with this. I don't think I have done that actually, if I have I can't remember. I think it might work. If I did that I would definitely use an air stone and oxygenate the solution and keep the plant really warm, humid and lit up!!! I am tempted to do this now!! Exciting. Please keep me posted.

I've not put any in LECA yet, but they're all growing water roots and many are almost 2 inches with secondary roots. I'm also not using nutrients right now (I need to figure out the PH first) just Root Juice and tap water changed once a week. In terms of oxygenating, I've got some diluted hydrogen peroxide that I could use, but I've not needed to so far.
The plants I'm trying are:
• Calathea White Fusion - Notoriously dramatic, wasn't expecting this to do well, but it's actually doing the best of any of them! It's putting out so many new leaves too!
• Purple Shamrock (Oxalis triangularis)
• Philodendron Pink Princess
• Tradescanthia Nanouk
• Peperomia Red Log
• Sand Rose (Anacampseros Rufescens)
• Crassula Buddha's Temple
• Hawthoria attenuata
• Lucky Bamboo cuttings
• Scarlet Star (Guzmania Bromeliaceae)
• Bloodleaf (Iresene Herbstii)
Some have been in water for a couple of months, some a couple of weeks. If people are interested I can update how they're doing later on, either when I add nutrients or when I put them in LECA. 😊

Can i use stem cuttings, they have no roots (for example because the plant lost to much leaves, and the stem area i cut have no roots), to put it in leca? They should produce roots too? I get a sad melanochrysum before weeks. And i think to try, but i want ask, before i do it.

I was wondering about cutting my Monstera and starting a new Larger plant. My plants maybe 8 months old. But close to 4 feet already and I only have room for maybe 2-3 more leaves on this pole. If I cut the top off can I make a larger plant from the top cutting? Do I have the right idea?

I've put my philodendron Xanadu in leca and nutrient solution for about 3-4 weeks but the plant is becoming soft and some leaves are turning brown ....what am I supposed to do now ?😭

My theory is that, since LECA is a semi-hydro setup, the soil roots can treat the LECA as a normal potting medium with extra aeration just so long as those soil roots aren't sitting in the water itself, and will start to develop water roots only once the roots start growing into the nutrient solution. I don't think transferring to LECA has created a hostile environment for those roots so long as you don't fill the nutrient solution up to the point those soil roots are submerged.
And then I push play and there's more information. I suppose given that the soil roots did mostly rot, it's more like the phenomenon where you cut your plant back and it grows two new stems in its place. You cut the roots back and so, to adapt in what it's identified as a more hostile environment, the plant has generated more new roots to increase its chances of survival in an environment where roots can just disappear.

If I had 2 of the same plant I'd probs do the same. But if I have only 1 (just bought a Florida Ghost from my local Flower Power) and am too chicken to cut off all of its roots. I'm impressed with your one with no roots. So, thinking more on it I will cut the roots off and if it dies I can just go and buy me another one ( they were only about 25 bucks!) 😆

I have one aglaonema that has soil roots and it isn't growing leca roots. May be I will cut all its soil roots and see if miracle happens in my home. Hahaha
