@Joaquin yeah but Nintendo still has the power to throw down any and all proposed ideas, just how it is in there.
I almost always have a Houndour on my team, even if I dont keep it late game. It also evolves at freaking level 24!
You know, seeing the 3 forms together makes Houndoom look like the middle evolution and its Mega form look like the final evolution.
A lot of megas give off that vibe and should have stuck around as permanent evos somehow.. for example Mawile could have thrived with the boost a permanent evo would bring since rn it's kinda meh
I remember they once said Mega Evolution is for pokemon that can no longer evolve. So it makes sense that the mega evolution feels like a final evolution.

It would have been better if you said "hottest god damned dog" for the literal aspect.
This is why dark types have some of the best designs in the series. They really speak to your inner edgy middle schooler.
Also the fact that the pokedex says that its fire its cursed and even if you extinguish it you still feel it burning is just Metal AF

Someone actually made a joke about a Houndoom trainer saying "his name is Pancakes, and he loves to cuddle!!!" in another comment.
Are you implying that comment was based on fact?!
It is still horrifying how the pokedex specifies that Mega Houndoom's claws and tail are MELTING from the intense heat!
It's also horrifying that the _regular_ Houndoom's fire burns so much that the pain will *_never go away._*
About 95% of the Mega Dex entries are horrifying.
Game Freak made Mega Evolutions' Pokedex entries extremely gory in Generation 7 to justify NOT implementing Mega Evolutions in any generation past that.
Gamefreak retconned the Pokedex entries for Mega evolutions to help justify removing the mechanic
@@joannamysluk8623 no? Mega Evolution having side effects was already part of the lore. All the way back during the XY anime when Korrina’s Lucario went berserk because the two of them were out of sync and Lucario couldn’t handle the burst of energy on its own. A strong bond is required, not to activate mega evolution, but to keep the Pokémon from completely losing it and to help it endure or push past the side effects.
I love how he has the links above his paws like he just broke free after seeing an unsupervised five year old

Took me too gen 4 to notice tbf, though
The Japanese name for Houndoom is ヘルガー, which can be transliterated to English as Hellgar. The -gar in Hellgar's name appears to be taken from Garmr, a hellhound out of Norse mythology. These things, coupled with its appearance, make Houndoom one of the most obvious Hell-referencing Pokémon in both English and Japanese!
Very fitting that this line takes inspiration from Dobermans the most as they’re common dogs in the military and other law enforcement fields. Their original purpose was also bred to be quite sinister-tax collection.
Well they use Growlithe in the Pokémon anime when it comes to Police force.
I thought german shepards were the most common dogs for that stuff
@@IttzMawi they are; but Dobermans are also very common as well, especially since their snarl is intimidating and when they feel what they are guarding is threatened they are VERY aggressive.
also the marines are nicknamed devil dogs
Houndour always reminded me of a rottweiler puppy, while houndoom reminded me of a full-grown Doberman
Once you notice that Houndoom has no ears you never see them the same.

The only, ONLY thing i don't like about Houndoom is that its ears disappear. Like, it's something that I hadn't noticed for the longest time, but now that I realised it, it looks weird to me.
Like, where did they go?
Inside it's horns I guess
A lot of Pokemon tend to lose/grow something when they evolve, like how Kadabra loses a tail when it evolves into Alakazam.

One of the first cutscenes in Scarlet/Violet where dozens of Houndours charge at you is probably the greatest cutscene in Pokémon history.
The houndour line's design is simple but elegant. Tells you exactly what this pokemon is about with minimal frill, and looks cool as **hell** while doing it.
God I love these pups but I will never forgive the designer for ditching ears on Houndoom >:v
I mean we do also have Kadabra whose face appears to be a cross between an upside down pentagram and… Baphomet.
Kadabra was banned though.
For a stupid, totally unrelated reason, but still.
I mean it's a bit more subtle really, also because of a certain controversy, it was always overshadowed by Alakazam.
my guy, thats literally just baphomet symbolism. the pentagram comes with the brand
Kadabra not getting ANY TCG love because cancel culture started in the 90's...

And then later we got Giratina, who is literally Pokemon Satan: like, Game Freak isn't even subtle with it, since he got banished from his original home for going against Arceus(Pokemon God).
“They’re good dogs Brent.” -Creator of the Houndour line
My favorite part about Mega Houndoom is the fact that it just gains a pair of like, Mammoth Tusks on its shoulders, it's as if these aren't just parts of its body, they're literal skeletal parts from things they've hunted and that's...holy shit man.
Kid named Cubone:
Or actually part of its body

and while Houndoom is just undeniably cool, look an Houndour. This cute lil guy has grown on me over the years. Guy just has something neat about him
I love this demon dog so much, such an underrated mon
Horrible Pet tho
He's a good boy
In Japan, the "dark" type is literally called "evil" type so take that as you will. This was when the dark type was new in Gen2 so much could escape the censors. Besides it's not like localizations have any actual say in the matter, just what GameFreak will give them.
Dark is better term in English to convey the intended concept of those Pokémon being menacing, morbid, and eerie. I noticed the company’s intention by the pattern of dark type being strong against psychic type, weak against fairy type, and resistant to ghost type. Fear/stress weakens the mind, heroes defeat villains in folk tales, and ghosts are usually have a dark nature about them.
Even the devil can still be a good boy
Houndoom is my favorite Pokémon of all time. Every time it is available, I use it. Every time. I love it so much.
tbskyen once again making me think things i never thought about a pokémon that in hindsight seem incredibly obvious
I like how its got those shackles on its legs and how it needs more as it grows untill it cant be contained and the shackles brake
Oh yeah. Houndoom has often been a pick for my team just becuase the concept of having a hellhound be both your attack dog and your good boy is just so perfect.
The dark coat also brings to mind some of the black dog stories from the UK that more or less were also conflated with hellhound/devil myths.
And I really like the broken chain imagery on its legs in the Mega Evolved form, like you have literally and metaphorically let the devil dog off the chain.
Cry havoc and let loose the hounds of war (or hell in this case.) indeed.
Pure awesome.
The Houndour line is my favorite just because I got one back in Silver and I was just so charmed by the little devil dog that I've done my best to have one every opportunity ☺️☺️☺️
Dog is the opposite of God after all
Oh my dog!
Houndour family uses skull and bones.
Cubone: "Brother"
I absolutely love the Houndour line. And fun fact, in German houndoom is literally named „Hundemon“! Hun-DEMON! 😂
Ah yes, Hundemon, my favourite Digimon.
@@dumpy_frog that’s correct

I appreciate the power move that was having your brand be the central target of the 90s Satanic Panic, only to release a sequel with a literal hell hound in it.
When your dog hears the DOOM music start
I just literally love you used "At Doom's Gate" for this segment.
I have always loved Houndour and Houndoom. As a kid, I remember hating that you couldn't catch these damn things in Johto even though it's a Johto Pokémon. Instead, you're stuck running around for hours in a tiny patch of grass outside Celadon City after you beat the Elite 4 and, if you made the smart choice, you picked Cyndaquil as your starter.😵💫
If only they had given it to us in Johto, you could have afforded to get a different starter.
Honestly, replaying the game as an adult, I find that the importance of starter choice is overblown if you're just playing PVE. Sure you can get a head start if you consider type advantages that early, but in truth you can beat the game with anything you find laying around.
It IS a pain that they put Houndour so late in the game though.
@@tamar7065 I disagree. Your starter can be a boon like in DPPt where Fire types are scarce, or RSE/ORAS when Swampert is one of the best Pokémon in the game, especially when you factor in mega evolutions and/or Gigantamax mechanics. You can have your opinion if you'd like, but it just isn't fact. Some starters are better than anything you'll find in the wild, i.e. Intimidate Incineroar, Charizard X and Gigantamax Charizard, Protean and Ash Greninja, etc.
@@FoxxyFire-HellFrost Yes, but a child that's playing Pokémon doesn't care about that.
@@Oscar97o You just said YOU replayed them and I was referring to you specifically. Also, as a kid, I did care about my starter. Whatever made winning against gyms was what I usually picked, so to say that kids will just go with "whatever's lying around" is just not true. You should give kids more credit than that.
@@FoxxyFire-HellFrost ? I'm the one who said I replayed them recently and that it's possible to beat the game with whatever's lying around, Oscar is making a different argument.
Anyways yeah you can certainly make the game easier by paying close attention to all the little mechanics blah blah. My first starter was Chikorita because I was like eleven and thought it was the cutest, and I did just fine in PVE. The game is designed to be flexible and give you a lot of options is all I'm saying. PVP is more demanding so that obviously becomes a whole other conversation though.
I don't think I've ever actually noticed the fact the bone plate on Houndour's head is a smoll skull.
I had a doberman pinscher growing up so Houndoom was always one of my favs.
Houndoom owners are like "He's friendly".
How did it pass you may ask?
A good boy can get away with a lot of stuff
You just know he’s a good boi though. One who’s loyal & protective of his family.
I was honestly hoping a Houndoom mega evolution would turn it into an Orthus or Cerberus type situation with it getting more heads
Would be cool if its mega added 2 skull cannons and it got mega launcher as an ability
You're goddamn right that's an S-Tier design
I'm a fan of the Dark Type.
I honestly think that Houndour could've gotten away with being pure Fire-Type and still learning Bite & Crunch-the ONLY Dark-Type moves it naturally Learns 😂
Love that they've shown up in Scaret/Violet.
Whether a new form like a regional form in a Greek region or a new evolution, we need a Cerberus Pokémon. And the Houndoom family is perfect for it.
It was a perfect opportunity for G-Max but yeah....
Oh damn... just noticed Houndoom has no ears. Or... do the ears turn into horns?
Houndour and Houndoom are some of those Pokémon that you don’t immediately think of when someone brings up Pokémon, but you always recognize them and are drawn to them on sight.
Honestly of all of the gen 2 Evolution designs out there
Houndour is the *GOD TIER* of all the Gen 2 Evolution line designs I mean look at it *It's simple and Badass at the same time*
I always wondered why houndour was located near post game in gen 2. But now that I think about it they were probably trying to sneak this in.
And yet, I still want to pet all of them
I wish they just went wild and they just made Houndoom evolve intro some kind of Death Demon Cerberus...
Just perfect.
Houndour's family may have been one of the reasons why Wolfman and its evolution Warwolf didn't make it to the final game. With both of them being canine monsters with elemental affinities, both would learn Dark type moves like Bite and Crunch and, to be fair, both designs tried to go out of their way to make a more violent monster.
The other deciding factor most likely being Houndour's Dark type. It was the perfect time to test out new ideas, what would an evil Pokémon look like? Wolfman on the other hand, had nothing new to offer besides its pure Ice type.
It's funny how the chibi wolves wearing Pokémon fur coats didn't get approved, but the satanic hellhounds from hell™ did.
Mega Houndoom is the correct way to amplify a Pokémon's design. From the overly exaggerated bones and horns, to the claws burning red hot. The thing is so edgy it is actually in pain, that's how cool it is. Now if only it had a better ability...
But what am I even saying? It had a good ability! The sad part is it had to compete with Mega Charizard Y's Drought and the irony here being that they would have worked fine together if you could have more than one Mega Evolution.
They weren't kidding with the "it's so hot it's melting" part - Solar Power means it takes damage in harsh sunlight in exchange for a power boost (although the Pokedex entry came _after_ Gen 6).
If you are burned by the flames it shoots from its mouth, the pain will never go away.
I was just talking yesterday with a friend of mine about how AWESOME Houndour and Houndoom's designs are. And how they look amazing in Sprite form or even when they transitioned to 3D.
Been playing Pokemon Colosseum and XD Gale of Darkness lately and it always makes me smile with how beautiful those Pokemon are. Like, looking at some of the models you can see where they've been improved over the years, but those two still look as sleek and beautiful as ever.
Yet I still can't get this absolute unit of a hellhound in johto until AFTER I beat the elite four.
Sucks right? Like one of the only time you'll get to see one is from Rocket admins and Ms. "Win with your favorites".
Johto has like a weird as hell problem that some of the actual johto pokemon are either hard to find or you get them late in the game
Misdreavous and Murkrow are examples of this
@@sbevenine2055 and my favorite Gen 3 Pokemons such as Skarmory, Slugma and Lanturn.

It's literally my favorite Pokemon, not only because they look badass but because of one episode where a Houndoom takes care of Togepi and it's the sweetest boy ever
Love seeing a S on my boy Houndoom! I love Houndoom so much and mega makes it so much cooler. To bad it's gone and mega hurts it.
Also according to its pokedex entry, once you get hit by its flames the pain NEVER fades. It that thing lands a flamethrower on you ONCE you're gonna be in pain for the next 50 or so years
The fact they all go through the same idle animation when they are all together for the grade tickles my brain a little.
To be fair, boomers were already saying that the games were satanic so why even try to be subtle with his design.
Houndoom aside, how does Game Freak continually get away with so many of their unsettlingly disturbing Pokédex entries? I mean, just look at the Alola games as a spooky frinstance… 😗
I love the detail that the rings on its legs are broken once it mega evolves. Like the rings were meant to control its fury, but they were overpowered and now theres nothing holding it back.
A lot of houndoom's approval process can be chocked up to a "who sees it first" situation. If the first person in charge of rating it says "its fine", the rest of the squad is more likely to go "its fine".
Houndoom is best doggo boi and nobody can convince me otherwise
I do have to say, I'd have liked Houndoom having at least a Gigamax form where he were literally a Cerberus. And as I say it, it would be actually pretty on point as it being a giant three-headed dog would track for a Cerberus design.
Omg when he mentioned the skull on Houndour I only just noticed how the skull’s “teeth” become the angry lines on his forehead
nobody tell him how Cubone is wearing Its own dead mothers skull i think it would send him to space
One of my favorite lines. If I could pick a starter it would be this pup.
Houndoom is an example of the Dark Is Not Evil trope. See the episode where a Houndoom looks after Misty’s Togepi.
This makes “I can take Hell on with a squirt gun” hit harder
I remember nabbing a houndour back in crystal, as soon as it evolves into a houndoom, my first impression was: "wow metal af"
One of the hardest designs in the whole franchise honestly.
i'm pretty sure that the first time i saw houndour in the anime, it was secretly protecting some other weaker pokemon despite people thinking it was a threat. just the absolute goodest dog.
Funny thing about houndoom is in the Pokédex they we’re called or was thought to have a connection to the grim reaper, it is stated that once’s hit with his flames it will constantly burn until you die or the pain from the burns never go away. This man really has the Amaterasu on go.
I can’t believe it has taken me this long to realize houndour has a skull on its head, this whole time I thought it was just a bone plate with like eyebrows curled in anger
Let's be honest, that mega should have just been the 3 normal evolution
Didnt know they had a bigger hound. It's so beautiful.
"Dont worry, it wont bite
*It will burn you for eternity instead"*
I just realized that Houndoom loses his ears when it evolves, that's why it looked so bald to me
When you line them up the mega form looks like a perfect evolution for houndoom.
"How did it get past the censors" same goes for the description of pretty much EVERY GOST TYPE EVER.
I always forget mega houndour exists and then get really happy when I remember
Houndour always looked like I mix of a rottweiler & the mythic creature hellhound to me

Lil devil puppers also have what appears to be shackles around their ankles.
Houndoom’s mega evolution is a devil trigger. CHANGE MY MIND!
Honestly I never thought of it this way I kinda just went “haha funny monster demon dog”
Seeing this made me wish megas never existed, i want Mega Houndoom to be a final evo 😭
The Houndour/Houndoom line has always been my favorite cause my uncle used to breed Dobermans so I helped raise the puppies and its always had a soft spot for my heart and when battle styles had the shiny houndoom card I knew i had to hunt for it and got it in my first booster box
When i first saw houndoom debut i instantly knew it would be a classic
