    🎯 Key points for quick navigation:
    00:28 *🌞 UVB radiation from the Sun is crucial for vitamin D synthesis in the skin, but it's only available during certain times of the year.*
    02:18 *🧴 Factors like sunscreen and melanin affect the body's ability to produce vitamin D from sunlight, impacting different populations differently.*
    04:36 *🌍 Around 70% of the US population has insufficient vitamin D levels, partly due to modern indoor lifestyles and sun avoidance behaviors.*
    07:38 *🌿 Vitamin D3 from supplements versus sun exposure differs in its metabolic effects and absorption rates, impacting calcium bioavailability and potential toxicity risks.*
    11:36 *🦴 Vitamin K2 helps direct calcium to bones and muscles when paired with vitamin D, emphasizing the importance of balance in mineral absorption for health.*

    I'm in Canada, have darker skin and also have genetic markers that make it difficult to keep my vitamin D levels up. I personally need 5,000-7,500 iu's to keep my levels optimal. I tested every 4 months for the first year to optimize my dosage, and now test yearly to make sure that I'm where I need to be.

    The term "vitamin D" itself is a misnomer, given that it is a prohormone and that its presence in food sources (like that of phytoestrogens) is incidental worldwide. On that basis, I would submit that the use of "vitamin D (cholecalciferol) supplements" should be referred to as "vitamin D (cholecalciferol) replacement" and therefore as a pharmacological intervention. Moreover, I would submit that we do not know enough at this time to say that the practice of oral "vitamin D" (cholecalciferol) replacement has a metabolic effect that is equivalent to endogenous synthesis from a cholesterol derivative and release into the bloodstream by the human skin upon exposure to sunlight (which also has implications for production of melatonin and other beneficial metabolic processes).

    Living in Northern Colorado in my 70's and yes I have been able to lay out in the sun for several days all winter in the last few years. I take 2000 IU 2 days a week along with a teaspoon of cod liver oil every day. Just had the dr. check my D levels for this summer and they are at 58 mg/mL, which I call a win. I do agree that it is a combination of sun exposure , good diet, and some supplementation.

  • @PedrovoriskAB
    @PedrovoriskAB Місяць тому

    Chat GPT answered me: Pedro, your body generates vitamin D when your skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun. Recent studies suggest that the best times for vitamin D production are typically between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with midday exposure being the most effective. This is because the sun is at its highest point, and UVB rays can more easily penetrate the atmosphere during these hours.
    Seasonally, the ability to produce vitamin D changes depending on where you are located. For example, during the winter months in regions far from the equator, the sun's rays are weaker, and UVB exposure is insufficient for your skin to synthesize adequate vitamin D. In contrast, during the summer, shorter periods of sun exposure can be enough to meet your needs. Experts suggest aiming for 15 to 30 minutes of sunlight exposure a few times a week, though this varies depending on skin tone, location, and time of year.
    If you're in a location where sunlight is limited during certain months, like in northern Europe during winter, supplements or dietary sources of vitamin D may be necessary to maintain healthy levels
