Thanks Steve. This brought back so many memories. My husband walked down to Poole harbour in 1992 to watch Barfleur sail in on her maiden voyage. We travelled many times to Normandy on her. In the early days you booked a table in the restaurant and an announcement was made for Mr and Mrs that our table was ready! Different days. I’m sure you would really love the Normandy DDay coast. There is so much history there and we found people very welcoming. We used to go in early June about the time of the Remembrance.
Great video, Steve. No need to apologise for what you bring us - travelling is always a gamble when other people are involved, and we love coming along with you on your journeys. Thanks as always!
You should come to ride a few Greek ferries around the islands one time. They can also be busy in summer - or non-existent in winter, but there are a few older ones still sailing which are VERY interesting. Port access is better too. You can basically wander right up to the boats where they're moored and boarding is always just by foot, up the rear ramp, whenever you show up.
You should have stayed a night in Cherbourg pour pratiquer le français!!!haha But I enjoyed your walk and your comments. Hope you liked Cherbourg. It is a lovely city, relaxed.Next time try some French food...crepes normandes, cuisses de grenouilles, 😂😂😂Love and merci for beautiful video.

Ahh me Steve, you are bringing back good memories! Me and 2 mates chucked a tent in the back of a Fiesta XR2 and left Aberdeenshire for a couple of weeks wandering aimlessly through France. Spent a few days in Normandy/Brittany then headed south. Loads of fun adventures including drinking champagne out of Melamine camping mugs whilst eating snails! This was back in 1986 so almost a lifetime ago. Enjoyed the walk around Cherbourg with you, great vid as usual!👍👏👏👏❤️🏴
I remember the Melamine cups. Americans in an old VW bug tent camping in 1973. Champagne, no escargots. (Thanks to Steve for inadvertently bringing up these ancient memories)
As a Brit that has travelled the world myself, including having lived over 20 years in France, your videos are fantastic. We used to drive ‘home’ to see family in the UK every summer when we lived in France and those ferries rammed with families are an abiding memory!

Lovely to see Cherbourg again I have not been there for almost twenty years and it was lovely then and still looks to be well kept and clean now, British towns take note. Thanks for another great video and stay safe and well, cheers from Oz.
I went to Cherbourg many times in the late '80s when working for P&O Ferries (when they were honest ferry operators). Four crossings a day in the high season on the Portsmouth run. Many memories including when the ship was delayed leaving Cherbourg by some over zealous Brits ... police called .. they did not muck about, I can tell you! I've since toured the Loire Valley and Brittany .. look up the Nantes-Brest Canal; very interesting ... thanks for yet another great video. Merci, even.

I travel from the south of England to the western Highlands in Scotland regularly to go wild camping and walking. I always enjoy the time I spend there but I drive up overnight, and the journey is almost as special as the time away. Something about empty dark roads and motorways, and being up and out while everyone sleeps. It's really cool.
Really enjoy the videos. I'm hooked! The videos are taken from a normal working man's perspective with no extra song and dance, just like I would do if I had the opportunity. I really appreciate that you're consiences of other people when filming. Thank you very much, and keep the camera rolling.
I like Cherbourg. It’s one of those ports, like Santander, that people tend to drive through en route to somewhere else, and ignore. I think you summed it up nicely, they are indeed authentic. Thanks for another unexpectedly interesting video.

Honestly, I prefer the footage on the outside deck of the ferry over the inside footage. It’s nice to see the sea, the lifeboats, and the ship’s wake while imagining the smell of the brisk sea air. Sometimes it’s the travel videos that don’t go to plan that are the most interesting.
Absolutely loved the cut from the sunset with the calm, serene music, and the guttering penetrating wind. Showing how much editing really does set the mood. Loved the video, as always - showing the reality of travel.
My husband was saying how his dad used to sail from Dorset to Cherbourg sadly he recently passed away but I think this stirred a memory for my husband. He’s off work at present so we’ve been binge watching past vlogs of yours that we hadn’t seen before. We loved the ones from Wales, also the one Alicja filmed on her own in Poland. You could say we are big fans of your channel and always look forward to seeing what’s next. Thank you
I share your passion for any sea going vessel, love walking around harbours and taking in the sights. I bet seeing that sunset just made your day end with a smile. Thanks Steve for a great video once again .
It's amazing how you can show places so well in such a short time. There are hundreds of touristy videos online that cannot match your observations. Top man! 😎
Another tremendous video, thanks for taking us along on your trip. I understand the frustration you felt on the ferry ride back but it was still entertaining to me. One thing I love about your videos is when you visit a location, you take lots of footage of the location itself from your POV, which I love. A lot of youtube travel videos by others is footage of the person talking into the camera as they walk through the location and they forget to actually record much of where they're visiting. Cheers.
Brilliant video, Steve. I have more respect for you not filming where there are lots of families than if you did. And if anyone sees this before watching, don’t skip forward when Steve offers you the chance to do so. The whole video is worth watching.
Hahahaha! Nae danger, Steve! I'm more than happy with the odd shot of Cherbourg, the ferry food counter, and the sea, the beautiful sea! See me, I'm a mother, a grandmother and a great-grandmother, and I can tell you now I would never travel anywhere near school chucking out, going back, and somewhere in the middle time whenever possible!!! But fair play to you for being so respectful of others privacy. Thanks for another great video! 😰😬🤭🙋👍🙏 🫡🏴🇮🇪
Thoroughly appreciated this! Cherbourg looks like a really nice place, which I did not expect. And some great murals and statues. Definitely worth spending more time there! Thanks for a great video, Steve.
I never tire of your videos, even when you're afraid they'll be boring. They never are. I've mentioned before that I enjoy your accent, but when you were being sarcastic about "the door" you sounded just like Shrek! 🤣 I wish you could make more time to spend in the places you visit, it must be exhausting for you to be on the move all the time as you are. You once asked for suggestions or requests for destinations. Well, I'm sure you have viewers from all over the world, but I'm from Perth, Western Australia and I would love to see (through your eyes) what Perth, Scotland is like. Just a thought. Anyway, thanks again - I thoroughly enjoy your videos and love it when Alicja is with you too. You both seem to laugh a lot. Best regards from Oz!
Whereas in the UK, the planners would be thinking “how can I turn this into an eight phase traffic light controlled junction and increase congestion as much as possible?”
Your visits to these smaller mostly unexplored towns are always interesting, and you have a knack of finding quirky places to admire. But the crowded ferry was a bit of a nightmare although I can understand parents wanting to keep the kiddies warm and safe. Lovely sunset, especially the few seconds of the silhouettes of folk on the stair against the ship wall. Gorgeous!
It's nice to see that they finished the new roads and pavements. A lot of the centre looked like a building site this time last year! Nice video again Mr Marsh!
My rule of thumb for any ferry journey, if it’s more than two hours, I’ll pay for a cabin. I’m like you Steve, don’t do crowds, so whatever the expense for a cabin, is a good trade off to retain mental equilibrium 👍🏻 thanks for the effort my man
What you are not taking into account is Steve is at work. Budget for each trip is finite. Long boring parts of the trip are inevitable and sometimes too costly to alleviate. The joys of being a travel vlogger .👍👍
For a few hours, I'll do it without, although I might pay for lounge access if they have something similar, but yeah, over 5 hours, and having a private space is a godsend.
Do you notice how clean everything looks around the city? Looks such an interesting place and such a good atmosphere, definitely worthy of a proper exploration..
Cherbourg looks really lovey Steve, thank you for sharing. I felt so sorry for you sitting on that deck all alone on your way home. Looking forward to Poole video. ❤ xx
Always an entertaining vlog from you Steve. You say you’d like a boat of your own, even a small one. Rumor has it that there’s plenty of long rubber boats going cheap at Dover, and lots of life jackets too. 😇
Wow. Cherbourg is stunning. You and Alicja owe it to yourselves to spend a romantic weekend there, with a candlelit dinner in one of those cafes. (Must have an accordion player! : )
Thanks Steve, travel like it really is, with delays, crowds, unexpected surprises, heat, wind, etc. Lovely walk round Cherbourg; the cleanliness in Europe makes me ashamed of the UK, what's happened to our pride? So looking foward to you exploring more of France. As for language, quite a few words similar to Spanish, though sound a bit different! À la prochaine, et bon voyage.
Hi Steve,I love your videos. Been to France several times but one place that always sticks in my mind is Carcassonne. It's beautiful there especially the medieval castle. We had a great day exploring. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Yeah, we avoid travelling during school holidays. We used to go to France in September or June to beat the heat and crowds. Plus, my child is autistic, and busy ships would not be ideal. Cabins are our saving grace no matter how short a crossing is. Next time, check out La Cité de la Mer, the building you can see opposite the ferry port. It was where the Titanic stopped when it visited Cherbourg.
Steve you wrote on the screen: Not Another Ferry Video... But in fact they are very instructive for those of us who have not travelled much by ferry and who would like to explore this way of travel. I really appreciate learning everything you show us about ferry rides across Europe. Thank you!
Thanks Seve. Cherbourg was quite a rough town back in the 70s and 80s but seems much better now although a bit iffy in places. Think I would just stay in the cafe areas. I detest crowded ferries. That one was a nightmare but I feel sorry for the families with kids. Probably have to drive many miles home during the night after disembarking. Very difficult. Thanks for sharing.
Another fine video! I think you hit the nail on the head with the take away from this video. DON'T take the ferry at the end of the school holiday! That is a great tip as I am collecting travel ideas and this is a good one to know! The sunset shots were spectacular too :)
Often get the Brittany ferry from Portsmouth to Caen. Well once a year. Good service and reasonable food. The problem is you went in August, it’s French and English school holidays. I travel down in June and it’s pretty quiet. You should absolutely explore the region further it’s absolutely beautiful so much history there too.
Enjoyed it, Steve. The whole time, I was thinking, I hope he showcases some ferry hazard tape, and Lo and behold, you did 😂 Hope you're both well. Andy.
I love this way of travelling and exploring you have - you're observant and friendly, and these places aren't the classic do before you die type places, all the nicer for it in many ways. Ferry ports and companies clearly need to think about their pedestrian customers more! Oh and can't believe you didn't stop for a slap up breakfast/brunch/lunch etc at one of those brasseries etc! Can't just go to Carrefour, surely!
I really liked the tour of Cherbourg and your mint lemonade (sounds yummy) and the statues in the roundabouts and the ride back to the ferry across that cool bridge. The water looks really pretty too especially when you left the harbor. The sky was gorgeous. Fun video.
Nice of you to feature my hometown of Poole (albeit briefly) and even nicer of you to promote it from town to city status! The Barfleur has been serving that route for as long as I can remember so it’s certainly a veteran of the seas. I travel a lot for work and don’t often have a lot of time to go exploring but your videos are a good reminder that even if you only have an hour free it’s always worth having a look around. Many of my colleagues just hide away in their Premier Inn without taking the time to try a local restaurant or walk in a park or up a hill. I imagine it’s quite rare for a Brit to actually go into the town of Cherbourg.
Love your videos keep them coming. I am Scottish but live in Canada so I especially love when you do Scotland. I share your passion for the sea!! Learning lots too!!
As you say Steve it's nice to see all the fishing boats , they thrive in Europe while they are all disapearing at home in Scotland ! Och well never mind .
Yes .. last weekend or Bank Holiday weekend in UK or England is utter madness .. last proper weekend .. penultimate before schools go back ... its always madness Steve ! Just stay away from motorways , driving to beaches on sunny days ( if you want to stay away from over crowding , queuing and massively busy roads ) !!
just for your next trip : auberge de jeunesse means youth hostel. Maybe they offer cheap accommodation in France as they do in the UK, but I don't know. It could be worth investigating. If you like longer ferry journeys, I would suggest the one from Portsmouth to Saint-Malo. Take it as an overnight sailing to France. You will be charmed by the Intra-muros part of the harbour, the old historical town. From there, get a bus or a coach to Le Mont Saint Michel, which is relatively close by and is stunning - and enjoy the coast line between the 2, full of shellfish fisheries. Try a 'plateau de fruits de mer' in a café in the back street (sea food platter, which doesn't contains any fish!), to get the authentic French atmosphere and a cheaper menu. You could also visit la Rance producing electricity by the amplitude of the tides in that area (usine marémotrice). It should interest you.
Thank you Steve for an absolutely outstanding video! The walk around Cherbourg was very enlightening. We saw a workaday French town (population 25,000) with ordinary commercial boats and simple sailing yachts in the harbour. This made a stark contrast with what you see on the Mediterranean!
Cracking video Steve. During the eighties and nineties my friends and I used to go to France at least once a month from Portsmouth. We used to get the offers from a local newspaper, France for £1 (foot passenger) We’d drink and play cards, get off in Cherbourg for a few hours 🍺🍷then back home 🍺🍺😵💫😵💫 Great days!
I have to say, I have a lot of respect for you for not changing your values for our entertainment (I’m talking about filming families on the ferry 😉). Keep up the incredible work.

My rule of thumb for any ferry journey, if it’s more than two hours, I’ll pay for a cabin. I’m like you Steve, don’t do crowds, so whatever the expense for a cabin, is a good trade off to retain mental equilibrium 👍🏻 thanks for the effort my man
That’s a smart move!
Same
2 hours? Just go outside and look for wildlife
Thank you for filming
That Hazard Tape was absolutely fantastic and such a great catch. Keep up the good work!
That tape was a highlight of the trip!
I always enjoy your videos. I feel I’m walking along with you and you are so considerate of others.
Do you notice how clean everything looks around the city? Looks such an interesting place and such a good atmosphere, definitely worthy of a proper exploration..
As a fellow Cherbourgeois, reading comments like this is nice. Although it really isn't that clean of a city..
Haha 😄 😂 brilliant 👏🏼 wit man , plenty of boats there ..
Gotta love 💙 the man .
No there ain't, they're all being collected and sent back over to France for the next wave of the invasion.
Sarcasm. The lowest form of wit. Well done dear! 😶🙏🕊️🙏
@@BoadiceanRevenge Wow .. and you call yourself Boadicea chill , 💊💊💊💊💊
To be honest, yes it was supposed to be a video about the ferry but I enjoyed your wander around Cherbourg! More exploration of France please!
Wow. Cherbourg is stunning. You and Alicja owe it to yourselves to spend a romantic weekend there, with a candlelit dinner in one of those cafes. (Must have an accordion player! : )
What an amazing journey through this town. Thank you for taking us along. Cheers.
I am happy with what you can provide, knowing you do your utmost to give the full picture of your journey. Your videos are great 👍
Hi Steve,I love your videos. Been to France several times but one place that always sticks in my mind is Carcassonne. It's beautiful there especially the medieval castle. We had a great day exploring. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪
Exactly, Piétons are pedestrians. Marvellous weather!
Thanks, Steve. Bon voyage.
Thanks Steve, still an enjoyable watch…northern France was my first foray in to Europe in the 80s and great memories…
Fantastic info! Thanks so much :)
Yeah good point! Some of the parents didn’t look like they were having a very relaxing holiday!
Another fine video! I think you hit the nail on the head with the take away from this video. DON'T take the ferry at the end of the school holiday! That is a great tip as I am collecting travel ideas and this is a good one to know! The sunset shots were spectacular too :)
I love the comments about the heat at the start, those are our winter temperatures here in Durban South Africa 🌞
Yeah, I struggle in anything over 15c 🤣
Thank you Steve. A great tour around Cherbourg. I would have been lost within 10 minutes. Your navigation was impecable.
I like being outside watching the waves and breathing the sea air. Virtually of course. ☺
Enjoyed it, Steve. The whole time, I was thinking, I hope he showcases some ferry hazard tape, and Lo and behold, you did 😂 Hope you're both well. Andy.
Haha I’ll never forget it on future voyages!
Fun video.
I must confess to buying some mint syrup for home :)
Folding bicycle would head you get around and save your back with your bag. Love traveling with you.
Fantastic work as always, Steve. I think your ferry videos may be my favourites. Cherbourg looked interesting.
Thank you Steve for an absolutely outstanding video! The walk around Cherbourg was very enlightening. We saw a workaday French town (population 25,000) with ordinary commercial boats and simple sailing yachts in the harbour. This made a stark contrast with what you see on the Mediterranean!
Aye a proper working harbour and some beautiful sailing yachts. Wait till you see the boats in Poole 🤣
