Another wonderful video Steve. Alas I am in poor health and unable to travel as freely as I would like. Your videos are a joy and allow me to live vicariously through your great adventures. Thanks for sharing!
When I was seven or so years old, my family went to the Isle of Man on a holiday. Just before the holiday was due to end we visited a wishing well somewhere on the island. I threw in a penny (old) and wished that the holiday would never end. The very next day my father asked my sister and I if we would like to stay another two weeks. You can imagine our response. That wishing well is on my bucket list of things to revisit, after 65 years. I look forward to your continuation video.
When you watch real time down to earth uploads like these from S/M and there are others who are good, no wonder ppl turn away from the holiday/travel/experience programmes put out on the MSM. Maybe i am not alone but i/we learn so much more from videos like this than any airhead so called celebrity host. Thank-You and keep up the great work.

Used to go there from Liverpool as a kid for family holidays in the 70s. Loved the Isle of Man boats. You could lean over the rail in the stern - used to love that. Old brass and dark wood fittings, and massive lounges under the water line. You could hire a small cabin. No cafe - nothing like that! Just tea and crisps etc sold through a hatch. The journey took about 4 hours each way. No cars onboard in those days. Obviously this is more luxurious but it was lovely to learn over the rails.

Love the video Steve, thanks for the great memory! We did this crossing to Manx (with our car) on the 9 Sept 23. Loved the new ship and very friendly crew. Loved our second 2 week stay on Man. Can't wait to go back soon!
Remember using the old ferry from Fleetwood, we were competing on the Manx Rally. The crossing was very rough and a lot of cars were on the open deck. Sea water covering their cars every time the front dug into the next wave. Was the only time I've felt unwell on a ship. Thankfully our van and tailor were well undercover. Could you imagine the compensation claims today. You got remember back then cars rusted when it rained🤣

A huge well done Steve for clattering through the 80k subs barrier. What an achievement. What a ride! 👏👏👏👏 Ah, the Isle of Man Steampacket Co. - takes my back to my first trip over there from Heysham in '84 as a Sunderland supporter going to watch my team play in the Isle of Man Football Festival. We sat outside the bar waiting for the doors to open before the ship had even left port then once inside had many a beer and a sing song with a load of Blackburn fans heading over there, great lads who became friends for years afterwards. Beer, football, sun, sea and sand. A cracking holiday. As regards that new Manxman, it looks tidy enough but could certainly do with more outdoor space 👍
So many memories of holidays on the IOM as a kid. The ferry from Liverpool used to take about 4 hours so nothing much changed there - the island looks pretty well the same. I was last there in 1980
I actually worked on the old Manxman that was built in the 1950s . It was my first job after leaving school at 16 in 1980. The new Manxman is a massive improvement on the ship I sailed on. It was a passenger only ferry but did carry motor bikes during the TT week. All of the motor bikes were just parked around the main deck where people could walk around them. The riders had to drive on a big wooden ramp from the side of the dock at the pier head ( Liverpool) onto the ship. It was a sight to see and extremely precarious in the days of limited health and safety. A great sailing on a calm summers day but the Irish Sea can be brutal in the winter months.
I am always fascinated by the range of tides in that part of the world. When you were walking, the tide was definitely out. If you happen to think of it and you have the opportunity, it would be interesting to see some high and low tide comparisons. Thanks for a great video!
I watch many channels from the UK and I’m Australian and the power of the tides over there amazes me. They sometimes go out so far that even the rivers that feed into the sea are nearly dried up. We certainly have tides but I’ve never seen tidal waves like that here. I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen here but to be honest, I don’t know enough about ours but the UK ones truly blow my mind.
Hi Steve. That new ship is a big improvement on the ship I sailed on 50yrs ago to the Isle of Man. I think they had only just got rid of the oars . Your easy style makes watching your videos a joy, even though you had had a stressful journey to get there. ATB
Oh, the ship can handle the weather. It's just her crew hadn't had bad weather trials on her yet. After this storm her crew had bad weather trials... Operating a ship isn't the same as operating a car... Duh!
Hi Steve, another very interesting and informative Trip Report. I , ems am sure a lot of folk who can't travel due to mobility problems will love your clips. Please keep it up, and do enjoy your Travel !
The first IOM Steam Packet boats were built by Robert Napier on the Clyde. In those days it was the builder, not the shipping line, who had house funnel colours. Napier painted the funnels of his ships red and black. Cunard and IOMSP are, I think, the last two companies to still use Napier's yard colours.
Great video steve still waiting to go on her soon and it would have been manx grand prix hence the teams and some people call the terrminal teh lemon squeezer keep up the good work 👍⛴
Great video Steve, had a lot of childhood memories of Morecambe myself, my grandma had a caravan there. A day was not complete without a trip to Bruccianis love the place.
As a frequent traveller to the island I can safely say that for the majority of the year, the last place you want to be is outside on deck enduring the full onslaught of the Irish Sea. On board the Ben, outside was mainly frequented by the smokers and the projectile vomiters.
Steve - Another outstanding trip video. So many of your ferries look and function like pseudo cruise ships considering the amenities they offer, compared to here in The Colonies. After reading John's comment, when do you plan to return for a proper go at a tour of the island? Let me know and I'll join you if only to carry your bag! ;-) Beannaich Dia na h-Albannaich anns a ’Ghàidhlig! ~~ Seas gu cinnteach
Just a quick word in defence of the Manxman's rough weather abilities - as a brand new ship her crew had literally never sailed her in rough weather - you got switched to the Ben-My-Chree so that the Manxman and her crew could get out in the mucky stuff and effectively have their rough weather sea trials together. Far from staying in port while the Ben did the dirty work, the Manxman basically spent 24 hours doing laps of the Isle of Man in a storm.... Which of course means next time they can load passengers with confidence that they've safely tackled those conditions. ❤
I was more reflecting what the locals were saying about it, they seemed quite embarrassed. I thought they would have had plenty sea trials already, but I guess maybe not in rough weather, so it was good practice!
Exactly that - they'd done all the basic shake-down stuff, but you can only do the bad weather stuff when the right weather turns up. And of course the British weather has a sense of humour, so sent the first named storm in ages the day after they entered service.... 😂
On the train journey section of your trip it reminded just how beautiful the UK scenery is. It's too bad that there is not more outdoor space on the ferry but it looks like a lovely ship. And that steak pie looked delicious and I LOVE mushy peas. Looking forward to next weeks video, great work Steve.
There use to be, years ago,a summer only ferry from Ardrossan to Douglas which stopped in the 1990's.Douglas has,or had, summer only ferries to Dublin and Belfast too. However the Heysham and Liverpool are the main routes now.
used to love them having the Direct service to Scotland in the day... though the Dublin Ferry was lovely too. not sure with this new one... love the interior design, but I really feel it does not have some of the things you really need/want of a ferry...
Brilliant video! Lots of good info. Videos like this take the edge of travelling, it's nice to get an overview of what lies ahead. Thanks from Canada. 🇨🇦 🙂
Thanks for this Steve. I'm from the Isle of Man, and have travelled on the various ferries many times over the years. I now live in New Zealand, so its unlikely that I'll get the chance to try this one anytime soon. Again, thanks for the tour. Cheers.
@@steve-marsh I haven't tried that yet. I've been to the south island, but mostly for business reasons and so travelled by plane for convenience sake. A good long tour is on the list of things to do.
Is a fine vessel. They used to sail to Scotland in the summer but i guess the passenger numbers aren't there anymore. Is a lot less hassle just to fly there from Glasgow or Edinburgh and be on Manx soil within about 50 minutes.
OMG Steve...you are stressing me out already 48 seconds in!!!! Looks like you traveled close to Northumberland....HUGE VERA FAN HERE.....yay...made it to the ferry terminal where you performed another "man over 40 yrs/ old check".......love you buddy....as a FAMOUS UA-camR...did they invite you to the Bridge to steer the ship? No slot machines!?!?!? The steak pie, fries and mushy peas looks amazing...totally worth a tenner! I appreciated the piano music w/ the stupid windmills....got over my stress! Loved the pet deck. Read about the Jews "imprisoned" on Mann during WWI, interesting....thanks for causing me to look up history lesson of Mann. SUPER POST STEVE...thanks for the tour....next one looks like a totally different vibe!!!!!
Nice new boat 😀. Although I can't say I'd fancy wrestling with those doors if I had to get out fast in an emergency. The decor? If in doubt go beige! 😂 I'm guessing Steve there is some psychology involved in not making outdoor spaces too large or enticing - instead keeping people inside spending their money in restaurants and bars etc. It must be a very nice earner for them.
I've travelled that route on a fairly regular basis. But on the previous ferry the Ben-my-chree, it didn't have that much outdoor space either. But in the Irish sea, it can get very windy, so doubt too many would venture outside for long anyway!
The Manxman looks cool - apart from the lack of open deck space. It's amazing how ferries have become more like floating shopping malls. Back in the say, when my wife and I first moved to Shetland, the ferry was very much a ship, did little to hide the fact that it was a means of maritime transport, observing maritime customs! Anyway, the "softer" look and approach of today is fine by me.
Unfortunately free outside deck space is reserved for smokers. Even on very large cruise ships promenade decks don't generate income as cabins with balconies and upscaled restaurants and lounges. Especially for a ship this size with requirements for overnight voyages. However there was a viewing telescope on the very small open deck space...
Their ships have certainly changed a lot since the 1960s. The first time I holidayed on the Isle of Man, our car was winched on board using a cargo net. I recall it looking very precarious.
This brought back memories of summer holidays to Douglas. Boarding house with amazing food and deliveries of jugs of hot water in the morning, no en suite but who care. Old I.O.M. Steam Packet ships with wooden superstructures and deck laden with ropes. My first Mediterranean cruise was with Chandris in 1965 on a former IOM Steam Packet ship, T.S.S. Fiesta (Mona's Queen)
When there is wind and rain !!! it will not be that calme!! thank you for this demonstration and your kind guidance. I hope I can visit this beautiful Island!
Looked great! Not enough outside space but I guess it's short crossing and they are looking to maximise the revenue generating areas like cabins and restaurants - look forward to seeing the return crossing!
The Irish Sea is notorious for its short steep seas and you won't often see weather conditions as mild as this. Bearing in mind this ship is intended to maintain a regular service in the worst of winter weather I very much doubt regular travellers will be lamenting the lack of open deck space.
@@davidjones332 Keep in mind this ferry of this size also has overnight requirements as well. Sometimes the Steam Packet serves Belfast with an overnight voyage on top of the daily voyages to Heysham. Simply put, cabins and reclining chairs are more important than open deck space...
For those wondering why Manxman didn't sail in the rough weather, according to Iomspc it had a temporary limit of 26 knots wind speed for entering Heysham Port whilst crews gained more experience manoeuvring large ship in confined space. This will be lifted when the ship starts operating full schedule to replace Ben My Chree probably at the end of September 2023
Lovely ship Steve beautiful steak 🥩 pie proper Lancashire food with mushy peas 🌹 your our legs my friend fantastic videos you do Pal good price for your Room enjoy your evening in the Man all the best John 😊😊
Steve when you went through morcome you passed a caravan pulled by a horse that's Tyson Fury's the boxer he usually pulls it himself when he is in training that's were his family live well m8 thanks for the video John i
I remember a time when I would look forward to watching the likes of Swap Shop or Saturday Superstore of a Saturday morning. These days, it's the latest Steve Marsh video! 😅 I've only been to the IoM once myself, about 15 years ago when a mate was living on the island. Caught the ferry from Liverpool, then left on a flight to Belfast. It was a fun trip to a beautiful island, but I'm glad the sea was kind for my crossing. I've heard some horror stories! Looking forward to part 2. 😊
Didn't the Ben-My-Chree have a reputation for not sailing in anything approaching bad weather? The story was that the captain would light a candle on the bridge, and if it blew out then they wouldn't sail.
Nice to see another new ferry! Those are rare as hen’s teeth here in the US. Disappointing deck space, though. Isle of Mann just one more great place to add to my wish list. Cheers and ATB
Hi Steve Another good one really enjoyed it. In my day I can recall it was the highlight of the Greenock or Glasgow Fair not to go to Millport or Rossie but the Isle of Man from Ardrossan. I remember going to Ardrossan to drop off my brother and the ferry left at 1130pm on a Friday I do not recall seeing anyone sober!. Regards Crawford
Lancaster Station should’ve had a person standing there shouting what to do for connections! I’d do it! Official shoutout person! 🗣️ Very enjoyable video 👏👍⭐️
Watching today’s video I noticed a horse drawn caravan. I think of you and Alicja should hire one of these. This would have the making of an incredible video.
Hi Steve just seen your video and thoroughly enjoyed it and your commentary, l am a Manxman and my wife and l regularly travel to and from the Island to Heysham and this vessel is a vast improvement over the Ben my Chree which has been a fine vessel and served the Island well, just for the record there is a lounge at deck 8 called the Niarbyl lounge which you could have sat in with very comfortable seating and full panoramic windows 👍 Keep up the good work l am enjoying your videos
Thank you so very much. I am a Douglas descendent of James Douglas...Black Douglas. I have never been to isle of Man Douglas. Thank you for the journey...i feel such a love for this area i need to go. Be well be safe.
Would love to see you back on the island for another adventure! I discovered your videos when I was researching for my trip across for the first time in 20 years. My challenge was visiting as a wheelchair user so I really appreciate when you walk around the boats in your videos :) Ireland next for me!
I'm hardly an expert as I'm from the desert but i think you may have been dealing with a boatload of water tight doors which in my experience are usually below the water line, so I guess thats either encouraging or concerning, depending on your personality 😂. You should have told that saucy employee you're at 80k subs! (I know, officials never care about the important things). But most importantly we can start keeping a record now of how many countries you make bike owners nervous in. Two and counting! Fun trip; looking forward to the stormy weather next weekend.
Mid 50s to 60s was a young boy we went from Liverpool to Douglas every year. We always stayed at a b and b on Loch Promenade. Some of my happiest memories as a child. Loved the ferry trip
Family on the island so spent many hours on many boats sailing across the Irish Sea in good and bad weather my heart will always be with the lady of man. The fast crafts in the summer take a shorter time helpful as it sails from liverpool. We came back last week with the first passenger crossing to Liverpool saved us the trip from heysham. The cabins on the manxman are nice. And although it’s had a rough year settling in the Ben had the very same issues. The Ben being a cargo ship rocks and rolls way more than any other boat I’ve been on yet the family who are all really good sailers love her. The roundels on the prom are interesting it’s the mountain road where you think we’re going a bit quick and granny in her micra fly past you late for tea. Iom is a special place and the cakes.
Always fancied the ferry to Isle of Man. We live in Preston, not really that far from Heysham, easily accessible from Preston. Funny it's called Manxman, for years Preston Docks had a boat called The Manxman that was used for years as a nightclub, and very popular it was too. Looking forward to the next video.
That was her predecessor - before car ferries were normal the Isle of Man ferries were small passenger ships, and that Manxman was with the Isle Of Man Steam Packet from the 1950s onwards. 😊
That was excellent! Loving the ferry. Looks very manageable for people with dodgy bits about the body! These things are good to know. And I thought the terminal was good too. Shaped like a crown. Never been to IOM but will definitely consider a trip on that ferry,! Cheers me dear! 👍🙋🏴🇨🇮
Another great video Steve - man I was biting my nails as to whether you’d make it to Heysham there - you had a great day for your crossing - I remember when the IOM Steam Packet company sailed from Liverpool - I recall a stormy crossing or two and holding on tight ! - man making your viewership in the states here hungry again - steak pie looked awesome ! thanks again for supplying some travel ideas for next time I’m in town - keep the videos a Comin !!! 👏

Exactly that - they'd done all the basic shake-down stuff, but you can only do the bad weather stuff when the right weather turns up. And of course the British weather has a sense of humour, so sent the first named storm in ages the day after they entered service.... 😂
Live that peek-a-boo view of the sea
On the train journey section of your trip it reminded just how beautiful the UK scenery is. It's too bad that there is not more outdoor space on the ferry but it looks like a lovely ship. And that steak pie looked delicious and I LOVE mushy peas. Looking forward to next weeks video, great work Steve.
That pie won the day mate :)
I watched it with great interest
I was praying you'd make it! :-)
What a lovely maiden voyage Steve. You do do some extraordinary things 🥰
Your prayers did the job, thanks :)
@@steve-marsh 👌
nice one
Cheers.
Ahhh but you can do the inter islander over there, a ferry I'd love to sample again!
So true! The prices were just out of my budget though
In the 1950s the St Tudno used to sail from Llandudno to the Isle of Man.
Hey thanks so much mate! Haha I wish I was famous enough to be invited to the bridge! :D
That's a really good point mate - I bet there is something in that!
I've travelled that route on a fairly regular basis. But on the previous ferry the Ben-my-chree, it didn't have that much outdoor space either. But in the Irish sea, it can get very windy, so doubt too many would venture outside for long anyway!
Nice new SHIP, not a boat! And alexandre, we don’t need religion, the curse of the world!
@@jimcrawford5039You are not good at spotting light / wry humour are you 😉.
If you're from the Isle of Man it's 'The Boat". @@jimcrawford5039
Love watching all your videos love to see all the places I would never get to see
The Manxman looks cool - apart from the lack of open deck space.
I know exactly what you mean, and for me, I'd take a traditional ship over the newer ones any day, as long as the food is good :)
Thanks for the vlog Steve. Looks like a nice place Isle of Man👍
Thanks so much! Wonderful place!!!
Their ships have certainly changed a lot since the 1960s. The first time I holidayed on the Isle of Man, our car was winched on board using a cargo net. I recall it looking very precarious.
That is so cool!
You should try the Silja Symphony cruiseferry from Helsinki to Stockholm, it was a wonderful journey! Amazing video, Steve
Yes, a fabulous ship!
No one does ferry videos better.
Mate, thanks so much! But we need to see you on another one :)
When there is wind and rain !!! it will not be that calme!! thank you for this demonstration and your kind guidance. I hope I can visit this beautiful Island!
That pie and chips looked good
Looked great! Not enough outside space but I guess it's short crossing and they are looking to maximise the revenue generating areas like cabins and restaurants - look forward to seeing the return crossing!
That's a good point!
Thanks for sharing , Steve. Be nice if there was an Isle of Woman. I can only dream. Greetings from Australia.
Haha maybe I just haven't found her yet :)
Thanks for the info!
Lovely ship Steve beautiful steak 🥩 pie proper Lancashire food with mushy peas 🌹 your our legs my friend fantastic videos you do Pal good price for your Room enjoy your evening in the Man all the best John 😊😊
Cheer John mate!
Steve when you went through morcome you passed a caravan pulled by a horse that's Tyson Fury's the boxer he usually pulls it himself when he is in training that's were his family live well m8 thanks for the video John i
Wow! All those windmills at seas! Very majestic!
I remember a time when I would look forward to watching the likes of Swap Shop or Saturday Superstore of a Saturday morning. These days, it's the latest Steve Marsh video! 😅
I've only been to the IoM once myself, about 15 years ago when a mate was living on the island. Caught the ferry from Liverpool, then left on a flight to Belfast. It was a fun trip to a beautiful island, but I'm glad the sea was kind for my crossing. I've heard some horror stories!
Looking forward to part 2. 😊
Cheers Andy! Ahhh those indeed were the days! Hey, you did exactly the same as me with the flight on to Belfast!
Didn't the Ben-My-Chree have a reputation for not sailing in anything approaching bad weather? The story was that the captain would light a candle on the bridge, and if it blew out then they wouldn't sail.
A bit like Calmac ferry out of Ardrossan to Brodick!
The Ben had the same issues when it first came into service. How we forget.
Nice to see another new ferry! Those are rare as hen’s teeth here in the US. Disappointing deck space, though. Isle of Mann just one more great place to add to my wish list. Cheers and ATB
Yeah, deck space makes or breaks a trip for me! I get bored inside!
Thanks Crawford :)
Hello Steve mick from Hull hope you are very well really enjoyed this episode I will look forward to the next one 😊😊
Cheers again Mick!
Looks great my sister lives in port Saint MARY.
Place I have never been to go and would love to go
Lancaster Station should’ve had a person standing there shouting what to do for connections! I’d do it! Official shoutout person! 🗣️
Very enjoyable video 👏👍⭐️
Agreed! Sorry, AGREED!!!!
Watching today’s video I noticed a horse drawn caravan. I think of you and Alicja should hire one of these. This would have the making of an incredible video.
How cool would that be!!!
Hi Steve just seen your video and thoroughly enjoyed it and your commentary, l am a Manxman and my wife and l regularly travel to and from the Island to Heysham and this vessel is a vast improvement over the Ben my Chree which has been a fine vessel and served the Island well, just for the record there is a lounge at deck 8 called the Niarbyl lounge which you could have sat in with very comfortable seating and full panoramic windows 👍
Keep up the good work l am enjoying your videos
Nice looking pie !!
Thank you so very much. I am a Douglas descendent of James Douglas...Black Douglas. I have never been to isle of Man Douglas. Thank you for the journey...i feel such a love for this area i need to go. Be well be safe.
Honestly, your videos are brilliant. Can't say enough good things. Isle of Man has so many Scottish sounding place names
Cheers mate! Aye, I loved the names over there!
Would love to see you back on the island for another adventure! I discovered your videos when I was researching for my trip across for the first time in 20 years. My challenge was visiting as a wheelchair user so I really appreciate when you walk around the boats in your videos :) Ireland next for me!
Thanks so much Lesley!
Great video; great ferry fan here - best bit of the journey is always at the stern watching the wake 🙃
Couldn't agree more!
Great stuff
20 min to check in and you are videoing.....talk about relaxed🏴
Owd Bob is a must watch folks. First place I saw the Manx railway. What a dream!!
Will check it out!
Mid 50s to 60s was a young boy we went from Liverpool to Douglas every year. We always stayed at a b and b on Loch Promenade. Some of my happiest memories as a child. Loved the ferry trip
My best mate's mum is from IOM. I've shared this video with him. I hope you get a few more subscribers 👍
Hey thanks so much! Such a cool, friendly place!
Great video Steve I've never visited the isle of man I need to try it one day soon😂
I have friends on IOM this is another reason to visit.. thankyou for posting your Galavant to the lively isle of man
I see you stayed at the Fairfield. I spent 9 nights there at the end of July. A lovely guest house with very nice owners. Highly recommended.
Thanks for the lovely trip. It's always a pleasure on my Sunday morning
The pleasure is all mine Elaine!
Another brilliant video Steve looking forward to your next challenge with Scott !!! Paul in Kent
Cheers mate! My turn to choose next!
Why wouldd I skip to the ferry and miss the beautiful scenery!!
Thanks for coming for the full journey!
Thanks very much Steve, great looking ferry... Looking forwards to your exploration... I only know the Isle from the motorbike racing.
Cheers.
Cheers! The other 2 videos are up now, some place that!
Maiden voyage. Lucky there were no icebergs. 🙂🙂 Great video.
Haha true :D
great video, Steve. always wanted to see something from Isle of Man, so glad you're covering it. thought the preview of the next video looks ominous! looking forward to it! cheers!
