  • What's it like to be dropped in a new city with ZERO knowledge, research or planning? In this video I wake up in Gothenburg, Sweden and try to find my way around without the help of maps, reviews, sense of direction, or any real idea of how things will turn out. And what I find is, in my mind anyway, probably the PERFECT city!
Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it's as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don't expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

Actually there is a strong connection - some of the most influencual familys in Gothenburg in the past, Chalmers, Keiller and Carnegie were scotts. They built à lot of things there. Chalmers University of technology is located in Gothenburg and is ranked as one of the best engineering universitys in the world and the founder was scottish! There were a lot of other scottish merchants and entrepeneurs there to, especially between 1600-1800.

Don't forget the Dicksons (whom also were Scottish originally.) Steve walks past one of their old brick apartment buildings during the Haga segment. There's a whole bunch of brick buildings very remeniscient of British-style architecture in nearby Annedal which used to belong to the Dickson Foundation (originally built to house low-income workers), but are now privately owned I believe and quite expensive.

Here's the text translated to English =)
    "The Nordics' largest sailing ship!
The barque Viking was built in 1906 at Burmeister & Wain's shipyard in Copenhagen and has sailed to countries such as Australia, South Africa and Great Britain. At 108 metres, it is still the largest sailing vessel built in the Nordics. For many years the ship was used as a seamen's school and since 1957 it has had Lilla Bommen as its home address.
In 2021, The barque Viking took a well-deserved vacation at Falkvarv in Falkenberg. There, the hull, bottom, mast and rig were painted and new technology was installed. The shipyard visit was part of an extensive renovation of the ship that is ongoing between 2019-2021, where the entire wooden deck is also being redone."

Hi Steve! Gothenburg resident here. The boats you passed in 4:41-4:58 is actually all part of a ship museum called ”Maritiman”. I happen to work there, and you can go inside some old warships there (including the big grey destroyer ship), and we even have a submarine (sadly closed for the time being).
I’m sorry to tell you that the big red light ship is going to be destroyed due to it currently being to expensive for the museum to repair. If you happen to have 2 million sek laying about, we’d be happy to save her, but there is a similar one in Stockholm being preserved, so we have little choice. But if you’d like to visit the museum sometime, you are welcome aboard!

Warms a Göteborgers heart to see this depiction and of appretiation for our city. Sometimes we who live here are too stern to Göteborg because of the trafficjams, the suburbs and all the constructionworks that's going on all the time. Another native Gothenburg person here and I just wanted to add how amazed I was to see you found pretty much the only place in the city center with meatballs, I saw that you were near it and literally cheered in front of my screen when you found it. 😂 They are slightly above your standard lunch menu prices (nothing outrageous though) but I imagine they fall into the tourist trap category a bit.
Also if you like boats, in addition to the Maritiman museum you should try to catch Ostindiefararen Götheborg whenever it's not out sailing, it's a replica of a 1800's ship built entirely by traditional methods.
I think Styrsö and Donsö are the most populated islands (they even have the bridge haha), the rest of us city folk tend to only go out on day trips to have picnics and go bathing. My family has a tradition of going to Vrångö every year, there there are some houses next to the ferry but then the rest of the island is a nature reserve so there is quite a variety between the islands!
I don't know if you did but it's ok to go inside most churches during opening hours and have a look around.
Also, the oldest 1970 trams are reaching the end of their lifetime so if you wait too long before coming back they'll be gone. They don't traffic all the lines since some routes that go into the suburbs go through nature and if they break down there it's difficult to get to them. Ironically the 20-year old Italian trams (like the one you took on the way back from Saltholmen) are apparently also reaching the end of their lifetime, but fewer of us will be sad to see them go since they've been trouble from day one.

Kronan is one of two forts protecting the old town of Gothenburg. As they built the town they realised that the two hills around it would be a dangerous place of attack on the city. So they built Kronan and the other one named Lejonet (The Lion) to protect the city from seiges.

I live in the Blekinge region (in the southern part of Sweden east of Skåne) so have gotten a chance to explore some of the islands near Karlshamn (where I live), and they are all idyllic as well. I also got to spend a couple of weeks on the very big island of Gotland last summer and highly recommend it. Some of the most prominent men in Gothenburg's history were Scots. They came during the 18th and 19th century when Gothenburg was known to be a city were you could try your luck and there was a good chance you would succeed if you were industrious, even without connections, unlike Stockholm. It was also home to the East India Company, so the city was big on merchandise and business.
The richest man in Sweden at one point was a Dickson. In his palace he installed the first water closet in Sweden, which he demonstrated to the king when he was visiting once. He built the first public library (first in Scandinavia!), open and free for all, and left a lot of money to help the poor.
Chalmers University of Technology is world-renowned. Keiller owned the tallest mountain (which you can see across the water in the beginning of the video) and left it to the public to be made into a park. (A fun fact about that mountain, it's called Ramberget (Ram mountain). A local boy left for America and took some apple seeds with him. He changed his name to Rambo, meaning Ram resident. The Rambo apple later inspired a writer to name his protagonist Rambo.) The Campbells, Halls and Carnegies were other very prominent families.

Next time you go you should go to Majorna, which is an old working class part of the city (close to the Stena ferries) but is nowadays more of a bohemian area of the city with a lot of great restaurants and pubs (the tram you took to get to Saltholmen goes through Majorna). Just made the connection more recently in that in Scotland a child can be referred to as a wee “bairn” - the Swedish (and Norwegian/Danish) word for child is “barn” and pretty much pronounced the same way as bairn. One of many language connections probably related to those Viking visitors from times past, but this one more specific to you!

It was great to go back to the hotel after a day of sightseeing and enjoy the free homemade cakes and tea or coffee. Gothenburg really is a beautiful city and it helped that the weather was perfect. The highlight for me was the amazing botanical gardens which were among the best I’ve seen anywhere. The Slottsskogen Park in the centre of the city is also well worth a visit. I also did the ferry trip to 3 of the islands and would certainly recommend it.

All very clean and friendly then with lovely people and tall. Our hotel was the Saturday night venue for the local Saturday night dance. Very crowded. I'm 40 and spent most of my life in the UK and Gothenburg but when I was 18ish, living out there, being out on the town in Gothenburg a tough decision had to be made every night. Take the midnight ferry or the 6am ferry home, mistakes were made ... you're correct about the island culture still being defined by the local year round residents(especially for the 2 islands you visited) but there's obviously an influx of day-trip tourists during the summer and some areas have a lot of vacation homes. As you know, the speed at which you can commute to the city really helps make it a viable place to live ... brilliant video

It has been parked there since then. The ferry was marketed as an express ferry, taking around 2h compared to Stena Danica and Stena Jutlandica's around 3,5h.
