The disabled community is really benefitting from smart home tech, including smart lights. I am super grateful that accessability is becoming main stream. A smart light may seem trivial, but it is life changing for someone who is able to have a little more access to their world. Thanks for the quick run-down.
LIFX lights can be controlled with the switch if for some reason your Wi-Fi doesn’t work. Sort of like the problem he talked about some random person turning off your lights in the video but when you turn it back on after it gets disconnected, it will turn on again and function like a normal light bulb until you turn it off with the app again. Also, smart bulbs don’t have to cost $70 or even $45. LIFX sells a good bulb for just $20 and you can even find cheaper ones from other brands.
One thing is to not have internet access and another pretty different is the actual wifi signal not working. You can still connect to the devices offline, sorta like accessing your modem's settings.
The Philip one has actual light switches to replace your old ones, and won't interfere with your commands. Also, this works great on fan lights were you leave them on and now you have a wall switch without doing the whole electrical fan rewiring to a wall switch.
Thanks for the informative video! The video is a few years old, but now, with the emerging Matter standard, for someone like me who is just starting with a smart home, Matter is definitely something to consider. When it comes to smart lights, then a related standard, Thread, is something to watch. "Matter on Thread" is probably the way smart lighting will go forward, for the reasons mentioned in the video (no need for another hub, ease of setup, and reliability). There aren't a lot of smart lights that support that right now, but that will hopefully change over time.
Well not exactly, they might look the same but, cheap bulbs use wifi which cloggs up bandwidth whereas Philip hues operate on zigbee frequency, the app is better and more responsive and there are way for accessories
@@TheAviationistKhizr Really? I never knew that. I have a pretty high download speed but even with a house full of bulbs, plugs and switches, I've never noticed a difference or experienced any change.
How much kilo Watts do these bulbs use when not in use, if you have to leave the switch on at the wall in order for the bulbs to work over the network.
I set up all my lights up, got them all beautifully coloring my home then a storm cut them all down. Worse still, I'd forgotten how and which ones and worked on which settings. I couldn't get them working again. It drove me nuts. What a storm can do for your sanity. I still haven't got them working again.
Smart switches that work with smart bulbs are available. There’s the Brilliant Home Control (and dimmer switches) and the Innoveli switches. They both allow you to disable the internal relay switch so the bulb you’re controlling constantly gets power. And these aren’t the switches that fit over your existing switch. They replace the switch entirely.

I would NEVER buy any smart devices for my apartment. Also, I would like to point out the reused Talenti pint jars in the kitchen, I do the same thing, I also keep change in one.
Jackson Whitlow Cause I live in the hood and the power is always going out, my building is from the 1880’s. Further more, all it takes it one stupid smart asthmatic kid on his tablet to hack into my house just for kicks. Luckily this video is very old. All you need these days is a router and stuff that runs on tuya (or no router and stuff that runs on zigbee for local). A good quality smart bulb these days will cost you around 15 bucks.
Yeah by pennies, it's a hibernation draw like when your laptop is sleeping, just enough so it can keep track of time or respond to your app request to turn it on. On the other hand with the schedule settings you're not going to forget to turn it off anymore... So it should pay for it's own standby vampire costs in energy savings...
Amazon echo automatically connects to Phillips hue lights without the hub. Set up for smart home devices have gotten better but Phillips is the easiest and if you get the hub it can work even if you don't have internet
I think it's the newer Echos that have Zig-bee built in, which is what the Philips Hue hub uses. The newer Philips Hue lights now come with Bluetooth built-in, so you can start using them without a hub. You could theoretically use them without a hub, as the bulbs mesh with each other, but the hub gives you more options and off-network functionality.
3:00 no don't get c by ge I got one and all I was doing was reconnecting it to the wifi. it is too much hassle. What I do recommend is sengled light bulbs. Sof ar ive had almost no connection problems with them.
You should use smart switches for any light fixture, period. For lamps I've been working on converting to lamp itself to be smart. It takes some work but you can rewire a lamp with a small device in its base. The lamp switch goes to the device so it can still be controlled like a dumb lamp, but the device itself actually powers the lightbulb socket. Sure you don't get multi-color bulbs or different temperature settings, but nobody can screw stuff up because it doesn't lose any of the ease of use of 'dumb' lights.
Good to know! I wasnt even aware of Ikea having one. Can we use any voltage on these smart bulbs or does it have to be what the max voltage is for the lamps? Thanks!
Mochiba smart wifi led lights cost me only 40$ for 8 of them and they connect to your phone. There really coming down in prices if that is what they were in 2019.
I'd rather have really bright bulbs and see my house than have 'smart' bulbs I can turn off from across the room or customise the colour temperature. I have 2600lm bulbs for my living room torch lights and pretty much every smart bulb series seems to max out at 1000lm.
There’s nothing to install. You just plug your lamp in a WiFi block and control it with phone. I set it on a timer on vacation that varies day to day. Other than that, I never use it.
One of the very first things that was mentioned as being sensible was automatically activating a lock when you approach it, but the idea of a lightbulb turning on at the same time seems completely ridiculous? Lost me 20 seconds in.
The idea of needing a phone to turn on the lights is stupid. Having functional in wall switches plus the ability to program and control lights from the phone is another story.
You guys should try Wipro Garnet Smart Light 7W B22 LED Bulb, Compatible with Amazon Alexa & Google Assistant Which is about 20 usd It is a well known indian brand
To me this product is only good for if you truly own your house and have a fully paid off mortgage loan. I still prefer ordinary LED light bulbs for basic lighting inside general living in homes owned by other people such as houses without fully paid mortgages and rental properties.
LIFX has made the best smart bulbs for the past few years and you only mentioned them once, without even recommending them. Shame. No hub necessary, no hassle, integrates with Google, Alexa, IFTTT, Nest, and each bulb connects directly to the wifi. Costs a bit more, but you get what you pay for. Rated for 10 years usage too. Viewers, do your own research!
The fact that they try to force me into giving up my location just to use bluetooth is enough to throw this bulb in the trash. You don't need my camera OR my location.

Hey! Thanks for making my google home turn off the living room light, and then turning it red. Nice video!
Legit same. My neighbors think I’m running girls because the front porch was red.
Hey yeah... Thanks for turning all the lights in my house red!!! I really should have seen this coming
Hey WSJ how about not saying both the Google and Amazon hotwords on your videos.
was there any significant change in the electricity bill if smart bulb is used in the entire home?

thats what i was wondering too… if there was a significant amount of difference between regular LED vs smart bulbs

Lol I just experienced the same thing 😂
Why does your lightbulb need access to the internet??
and needs google too lol!
You can turn this feature off, or block it in your router.
It doesn't need to be connected to the internet per se, just to your local area network so you can communicate with them
I rent so the switch issue is a problem. I do like the smart plugs though. I have 4 so far and I find them very useful.

And then when he said play stranger things, it played on my tv😂

When you always have the switch on does it use electricity or ruin the wires in the wall or something
This is what I’m trying to figure out...
Philips Hue bulbs are often on sale on Amazon or Best Buy.
If you leave the light switch on will the electricity bill go up is my question....I mean I can’t find a answer to my question anywhere😏

Hi. Does a smart bulb remember his last settings when turned of by the power switch?
I’m afraid it does no
Does not
It depends. The philips hue bulbs are able to remember their previous power state.
