i think the original pickup too much better when use a EQ. can also do after amp. boost above 1 khz +3 db. and lower below 1 khz with -3 db. so tonal balance is simular as the seymore duncun. but the original sound still fatter and i like more. this video show me i should stay on original pickups. i need reduce toneknob on guitar to half on marshall and VST amp sims then it sound a little better. so the original bring much high freq. with tone on half it sound still brighter as on this video. maybe he have tweek a guitar sound to new pickups. then often it sound bad with new. and when tweak a pickup for old then it sound bad on new. or maybe he have a long guitar cable that reduce high freq. I use a 2 meter cable. when use 5 meter cable damp alot more. there is a video on youtube on which tonal balance of both pickups is same. but i think the jackson sound fatter same as in this video when correct tonal balance. can find the video when search Seymour Duncan VS Stock Jackson Pickups
TBH the Jackson stock high output humbuckers are pretty good. I have 3 Ibanez guitars I have fitted with EMG active pickups because the stock Ibanez infinity are terrible. I just got a Jackson Dinky and was really impressed with the stock pickups. I was ready to order a S. Duncan distortion set while waiting for the Jackson to ship, but I'm sticking with the stock pickups.
What people think is too much highs in a JB is actually High/Mids. I love the pickup but I can also see why others don't. I also love the Duncan Distortion.
I just bought a minion from Sweetwater like yours and had them put a JB in the bridge. Liked everything about it except it had way too much static in the recording in my Daw compared to my other 2 more expensive guitars. Did you experience this? It was so bad that I had to send the guitar back. Don’t know whether they installed the pickup wrong or the guitar uses inferior parts that caused the extra static.
My first guitar is an old 1991 Jackson Kelly Performer series. The Jackson pickup in it was pretty good but I swapped it for a JB 20 years ago and Now I put JB's in all my guitars.
I read that Randy actually used a DiMarzio Super Distortion HB in the bridge( his Carl Sandoval polka dot Flying V)and they are a very hairy pickup when playing the lower palm muted strings. I’m just wondering how to clean up and give “edge” to the lower strings when the gain is turned up. EVH always had that sound in his classic LIVE tone from the 1984 era, all his lower strings were very gritty, not fuzzy, and his mid and high strings were so pronounced and “in your face”. I like having the sensitivity of the strings, but without the hairy fuzz and Randy’s was the same on “Over The Mountain”. From experimenting, I believe EVH used a 250k pot in his guitars instead of the 500k. I started using that and my classic VH tone is way better and you can hear the strings and wood of the guitar much better, without most of the fuzz. Lifting and lowering the PU is also good. Also, the height of the strings off the fretboard is important too. If strings are too close, you get more unclear, fuzzy notes, if it’s lifted up to the right height, notes become clearer and some fuzz goes away. I’d like to hear your thoughts.🙂
Excellent vid! LOL with your son's cinematography debut! That is awesome! Tried to get my son into music (drums, guitar, etc), but ice hockey is his thing. Still pushing a little, as I get him to take the Ukulele with him on long road trips! Anyway, glad to see you back with another vid!
I just got a minion v. I’m 55 just Starting . My book 1.6 mm I think. They are way low from factory. Can you give me a good place to put those. I got all the right tool to measure. Thank you if you could help.
Haha cute kid man. I too have a son named Henry. I got the black Jackson minion RR for my oldest and I was thinking about swapping out the pickup but after this video I think I'll just leave it in and maybe give him an EQ pedal.
The question is why isn't Henry ripping on it? Guitar actually looks difficult to play with your fingers all mashed together during that solo. I like the clarity of the JB much better.
How did you get the action so low? When I lower the action the saddle screws stick up into my hand. On top of that I've taken the guitar to get set up a couple different times and the text never gets the action long enough it's like a conspiracy or something
silly question but I just picked up the little beastie and the thing buzzes quite a bit. ground? did you notice anything like that with yours? really like your vids
Thanks Gilby. No, Mine was pretty quiet even before I switched pickups. Actually, I think the stock pickup was quieter. Maybe your wiring is a bit wonky. ??? Sorry don't know.
Hey I know this is a older video but hope you still can answer my question, is this guitar suitable as a main guitar, thinking of buying one as a guitar project
Not really. It's fun. But it's a very small fretboard for anyone past the age of 13, unless they have very small hands. It's like a mandolin. They do make a full size model that's about $50 more (something like that). That would be a better way to go.
@@jonathanreyes5842 EMG don't really bring a tone of tone to a guitar. So if a guitar doesn't sound great, then EMG's are going to emphasize the not-good-ness of the tone. Better off with a "tone" pickup, like a Dimarzio.
I was going to say the duncans sound better, but then i realized the sound is like as if you over-saturated a picture, yeah the colors look brighter and the picture looks better but it seems a little fake, the stock jacksons dont have that extra bite, but i think you could dial that in, seems like a little extra thats nice to have but I dont know if id want the whole tone based off that high trebbley pickup. I think pickups these days are becomming way to gimmicky with their sound and personally id like to see just a blank pickup and change the tones digitally if I want extreme difference in pickup sounds.
I have Motor City pups in my RR-1, sounds thick and tight compared to the stock JB that came with it. That JB is a cheap alternative to anything, IMO waste of money. Might work in a LP though, since it's bright. Just my opinion.
The Grube hell yeah totally agree more I own a Jackson rr not that one a normal sized one because I'm 16 but I'd definitely get it got your 10 year old
If you are a full sized person. I would go with something else. The small V shape is a bit awkward to hold. They make a full size version of this guitar, and it's not much more expensive.
once again dr david banner hulks out with an impressive cover and song choice. throw in a ragnarock neck and juggernaut bridge. change the nut to aluminum or graphtech. swap the bridge for hipshot or evertune. vega trem , put in some evo gold X jumbo fretwire detune that thing and add fat strings. and add high ratio tuners!
I bought mine a few months back second hand. The first owner had some mods done: locking tuners, fret polish, nut filed out to make room for a set of 10-52 gauge strings. Tone pot was disconnected, CTS volume pot, Switchcraft jack and the bridge PU was replaced with a SD Invader. Tuned to D drop C. The most useless, one trick pony, guitar I have... but it's hilarious and I'm never selling it!
Stille love that guitare (mine is blueburst) despite this little bad grounding suble nois when we dont touch strings, they all got this issue, but hey who cares? :)
For almost 30 years I've played that verse riff fill a different way. Essentially the same notes, but different position. Now I need to investigate how Randy actually played it. :)
Have to say, for a $150 guitar, those stock pickups aren't that bad. Thanks for sharing!
This guy is huge!!! I've never seeing a giant rocking a guitar before. So cool!!!
🤘🤣
I love the JB. It's probably the best overall/all around humbucker pickup out there, IMO. It just sounds good for any style, clean or dirty.
DPS try doing a partial coil split too 👌🏻👌🏻
I love duncan JB ..anyone tried the JB mini ?
I'm huge fan of Seymour Duncan pickups (''JB'', ''Super Distortion'' and many more) but for this guitar, the stock pickup is better (for my ears).

@@user-lw9py ive not tried extreme pickup swaps but as far as any guitar goes: it's I plug into a multi sound pedal I like an I can play
Shaking camera was awesome.
The Jackson pickups sound too muddy. On my JS-1X I put EMG H4 an H4A

Hmmm. That sounds like they didn't ground the pickup correctly when they installed it.
*A great video would be this Jackson vs. the Ibanez Mikro.*
Jackson has dinky too

I love the Jackson pickups they sound great but in my mind i have the EMG or Duncan Seymour Nazgul - this time i definitely want active pickups.
Playing standing up, the neck does not outweigh the guitar?
For the records, I liked the cam shake 😂

Really had fun watching and listening.
Your musical choices are awesome too - i.e. Over the Mountain, great pick.

ha! We're working on Ukulele lessons with Hen. Hopefully that will transition him into guitar. Fingers crossed.
Before spending a lot of money on brand pickups, try changing the ceramic magnet with an Alnico one.
Those stock pups are really not bad.
How did you get the action so low? When I lower the action the saddle screws stick up into my hand.
On top of that I've taken the guitar to get set up a couple different times and the text never gets the action long enough it's like a conspiracy or something

is there enough space in the back cavaty for an active emg setup?
I don't like either, I'd put something somewhere in the middle the JB seems too bright and harsh, the Jackson is too muddy.
I think I Suhr Aldrich would be a good balance. However, it starts getting silly when the pickup costs more than the guitar.
Ayyy ur son thinking wow pops is a pickin’ fool !! Haha very nice playing on that mini man
can replace by EMG active pickups?
You can, but I think that's a bad idea. It's gonna sound pretty blehhhhhhhhhh.
I'd love to hear that
@@BigHairyGuitars why u say that?

Needs a Floyd.
This stocks pickups aren't that bad. The SD is better, but enough to enough to warrant swapping them. Just tweak your amp settings and keep rocking!
Hi Henry.
I really like that guitar, here in Argentina it is difficult to get, although it is cheap, thanks greetings
Jackson pickup win.😊
poplar is a poor choice for a humbucking guitar there is no low end

JBs have been around for 40 years, they're hardly a gimmick lol

same as me,,jackson minion versus epiphone jackson deep, and epiphone more clear tone,,but if in heavymetal jackson minion the best,,
Omg I just posted to reddit about this. I wanna swap out the reg. pups with the OG RR setup: Dimarzio Distortion and PAF haha!
It seems decent enough for me to get one for my 10 year old. What say you?

If you’re a grown man, it’s a little too small. Checkout the next size up.

No
Does anyone know if these stock jacksons are passive or active?
stock are passive.
More bite on the JB.
try EMGS then will see
sd sounds better by a long shot to me

Whats that riff
Playxbox_Makemusic_ 83 over the mountain
Its so small you can play like nuno Bettencourt with his insane reaches(at least in my eyes , i have stubby finger syndrome)
Hi Henry!
No cooler dad than one who buys a Jackson V to his son & can play Randy Rhoads ''Over The Mountain''.
should of put the EMG HZ's in there.
Why? The passive hz is literally one of the worst pups ever made.
I have those same headphones. Love them.
DAT FOREHEAD

arent u my dentist?
A lot of guitar players suffer from screwdriver syndrome, they can't keep them away from guitars.
The Jb, kicks that stock out of town.. Way more sustain, and snarl 🎸🔥
Didn't hear the difference.
Stock pickup wins..
Stock sounded better, but still terrible.
Sounds the same... like garbage
You sound like a really fun person.
