  • Looking for an EASY way to clean silver at home without any scrubbing or harsh chemicals? Watch this video to learn how to clean your silver platters, utensils, and serving pieces using household items. All you need is baking soda, salt, aluminum foil, and hot water.
    MATERIALS
    Baking soda
    Salt
    Aluminum foil
    Tongs
    Optional: toothbrush
    DIRECTIONS
Measure out 1-2 gallons of water in a large pot (I often use 2 gallons to fill up the large side of my sink)
    Heat the water to boiling
Place a stopper in the sink, and then lay down one sheet of aluminum foil
For every gallon of water, add 1 cup of baking soda and 1 cup of salt to the sink
Once the water is boiling, pour it into the sink (note: the mixture will react and begin to bubble)
Use the tongs to stir and dissolve the baking soda and salt into the water
Use the tongs to add silver to the water
Note: the silver item needs to touch the aluminum foil to allow transfer of the tarnish
Let the silver item sit for 1-2 minutes, turning with tongs if needed
BE CAREFUL - the water is super hot
Remove item for the water using tongs
Repeat this process for as many items as needed
It there is still stuck on tarnish, you can create a paste of baking soda and water and gently scrub with a soft cloth or soft toothbrush
To add a little shine to the pieces, spray with Windex or a mixture of vinegar and water and buff with a soft cloth
Rinse the silver pieces and dry with a cloth

The way some of y'all talk, you expect her to devise the method, impart the knowledge, credit you extra time in your day, come to your houses and clean your silver for you, and leave a chocolate on your pillow.
Chill out. Life's too short to be this impatient all the time.

BTW, thanks for the info! I have some seriously tarnished pieces I need to polish tomorrow, for this weekend. Looks like I can get it done without all the nasty chemicals, or a trip to the store (or waiting for Amazon to deliver them!)
Definitely worth the 7 1/2 minutes of my time. Ignore the impatient ones, they're likely constipated and cranky, or just haven't learned the world, at large, doesn't revolve around them. Their mamas must be so proud at how ungracious they are, too.

To store silver, I’ve found that if you cover it in plastic wrap, so that it doesn’t get touched by air, it will last a lot longer without tarnishing.

Your helping your sink to leak. Very Hot water that stays longer in your sink will damage the rubber sealant in your sink hole.

Yes!! You can store in an airtight plastic bag....the air is what tarnishes the silver. I keep all my silver rings in a plastic bag and it works really well.

I don't think I would do the Windex, or the vinegar suggestions.
It will remove the silver from the item by dissolving it.
I think I would suggest just baking soda and warm water.

Becareful when doing this, and always do it in a well ventilated area. The smell of rotten eggs is the result of Hydrogen Sulfide.

There’s a big mistake you’re sink is metal you should buy a big glass cleanning bowl. Metals beside silver & aluminum should not be added & results in unexpected results like silver plating your sink or adding sink metals. I can’t emphasize how big mistake it is plastic utensils thongs too.

    • @alex.nielsen
      @alex.nielsen 20 днів тому

Silver won't plate to a stainless steel sink, but you're right on with the bowl. A stainless steel sink will probably inhibit the reduction of tarnish to silver.

Wright’s silver paste would have polished that tray in less than two minutes. This technique is far too time consuming.

  • @aickoyvesschumann3400
    @aickoyvesschumann3400 Рік тому

This method still stinks terribly because hydrogen sulfide gas is still released in the process. The polishing pastes contain exactly the same ingredients. The Aluminium is in powder form in the paste and hence more readily available compared with the Aluminium foil method. By all means, the paste should actually work better, but likely costs a lot more.

I have heard baking soda is not good for your silver. It takes layers of silver off much more than silver cleaner. In fact, I heard never, never, ever use baking soda. Ever.

Good god, get to the point! What is wrong with youtubers? Are you suppose to talk for a specific time?? It's so friggin annoying when you're looking something up in a hurry. There's always too much needless talking. Hate that so continue looking for shorter videos that tell the exact same thing in 30 seconds. 99 percent of youtubers don't get to the point until the end of the video! Unnecessary yapping, words not worth hearing that just piss people off. So annoying.
