Thank you for your time making this video. I’m somewhat older than yourself and yes remember not my grandmother but mother and myself doing the cleaning of the silverware before Christmas every year. I agree with your opinion but honestly i haven’t heard of Twinkle Shine in Australia and use something similar to the Goddard product. I love your love of silverware and will endeavour to keep my old treasures going that have been given to me from my past generations. Thank you again.
Sophia such a great gift. I cleaned houses years ago mostly for Drs wives and teachers etc. those who had large collections from wedding gifts kept them wrapped in Saran Wrap hidden in china cabinets very sad great video as always you look pretty. Xo
Sophia gotta love a friend like you! “ Ain’t nobody got time for that!” I am on board with the twinkle method. I’m so happy to found your channel 3 years ago and always enjoyed each video! Thumbs up 👍🏽
What a thoughtful gift in such a lovely service set. I loved your demonstration on the different products and methods they are so interesting and so much fun to be a part of. And your Grandma sounds adorable. We love you and your lovely family ❤️💜💕🐶🐶🐱
It is a beautiful set when polished up. I have very fond memories of my Dad with his copper...he would spend a whole day cleaning and polishing it....and was always very proud of himself when finished...miss him so much every day.....😍😘🇦🇺
Beautiful! I had seen a bunch of silver at a thrift store I go to and I wanted to get it so badly. However, it was the one time I went without ANY funds! I love the look silver gives a space.
Sophia - Thank you for providing the comparison and trade offs for each method. If one is seeking bargain used pieces, some may be heavily tarnished. The electro-chemical (hot water, aluminum, baking soda, and salt) is a great initial way to remove heavy tarnish which helps preserve even the minute amount of silver plating that significant polishing to remove this would require; especially for tarnished interiors. I agree that either a Twinkle, Wright's, or Goddard's foam paste type of product with sponge or horse hair brush is better than a Goddard's-type liquid polish because of the significantly reduced amount of polishing (i.e. rubbing) one places on each piece (yes the odor, too). I agree with her grandmother, but also Sophia's recommendation that to avoid the "factory" appearance that say similar to an "new" International Silver Company set would have, by cleaning a few weeks prior to one's event. I hope people will go back to using sets as I hope they'll write good old fashioned letters once in a while. Cheers!
Sophia, you look so beautiful and graceful. You made me smile as you demonstrated the effort that goes into elegant entertaining. The writers of your etiquette books would have approved of this video! I have always wondered about the tin foil method. I will stick with my "quickie" polish. You have motivated me to unwrap the silver tea set my grandmother bought for me and use it this season! This is a lost art!
Yes Sophia I can remember doing the silver with my grandmother, and the smell was horrendous! I am liking the Twinkle product, I will pick that up! The coffee set came out beautifully! I wanted to say I binge watch your series Fly With Me from last year! So inspiring! I am doing almost the same from How Jen Does It, which she adjusted from Flylady. I did the purging with you! Thank you again!
I bought a coffee pot from a thrift store for I think $6..it is silver and just like the one you have there but the top part of the lid broke off..still it is beautiful..can't wait to clean it now. Even when it is broken it's beautiful.
I found a beautiful set like that for $50 at a charity shop. I was so excited. Four years later it went back to the charity shop. I had NO interest in keeping up with the maintenance. I'm glad a set has found its way to you since you obviously value the beauty and quality enough to maintain it.
Great Video Sophia! Love your whole look & manner! Love the way you transition from all the hard work of DIYs to giving TLC to the finer objects in your home! My memory of polishing was using Twinkle Copper cleaner to shine up the copper bottoms of my Mothers Revereware pots & pans. I loved watching those tarnished bottoms turn to gleaming copper! These days I use Wright’s cream for silver but recently I used it on a vintage tray & it didn’t do the job so I thank you for 2 new ideas to try!🎉
What a beautiful silver set Since I don't have any silver I do not know how to clean it. But now if I do acquire some I know what to do We all love you Sophia and that blue and white outfit looks great today
Thank you million times, I just removed years of wax from my Christmas candle stick using hot water and baking soda ,spotless even on the engraved ornaments I personally like a little bit oxidised silver ,but my candle stick is wax free for just 10 minutes 💐💐💐💐💐💐💐
This was wonderful Sophia and something I really needed to learn. And I wanted to ask a favor if it be possible to also teach us how to polish gold or gold plated items/jewelry. My husband and I are in charge of the altar guild at our parish and I want to make sure we learn how to polish the chalices and patenas properly before we do it (we have both silver and gold plated items). Thanks once again!
My Great Challenge thank you so much Sophia. I had no idea you could use that and we actually have some for our glass stove top. I now feel ready to polish our parish silver and gold plated pieces. Thanks a lot!
i watch your videos and each week I promise myself to start to declutter and organize as you do encourage me watching your videos. I never comment on videos but i decided today I would and promise to start on the kitchen this weekend. I enjoy your videos. i dont know if you have any gold plated items i inherited some gold cuttalry and i need to learn how to clean and polish it as its been in a box unused for more than 30 years.
Yes, there is no lustre with the aluminum method. I liked the Twinkle paste. I'd never seen any of these products. My mother had a paste that took so long to get the tarnish off.
We bought this same set for my Mom and Dad for their 25th anniversary almost 30 years ago. Since we (my siblings) couldn't agree who would get it, we sold it on auction and I bought it so it is still in the family . Unfortunately, I got the wrong charger 😞 I was just trying to clean it and came across your video. For being neglected for so long, it came out pretty good. Thanks for bringing back such good memories!
On severely tarnished pieces, I'd probably try the foil/salt/baking soda dip method first followed by one of the rubs. Did you know ketchup also works? I've used it in a pinch on small items (jewelry).
I really like your throwback glamorous hairdo, it's very suiting to your personality. It's va va va voom! And, your whole look is very, very nice. Lol. The coffee set is so intricately gorgeous. I love the ease and results of the 'Twinkle'. I would just do the silver early like you say and let it sit awhile for the dull to set in. I have the kid's plated baby banks, a duck, a bear, a carousel, and a photo frame. IDK if that's suitable for cleaning? They are sitting tarnished in the cedar chest. I could clean them and pass them on at Xmas? It's dawned on me, grandma had the silver box, but we Never polished, I think it was stainless in there? My husband did the rubbing of all the pieces like you say for his elder mom ~ Ha! We are laughing...grandma....you got me. Yes, he always did the grunt work: grating carrots, cleaning the pantry, peeling potatoes, polishing the silver. He was mama's little helper! I was only allowed to 'watch' until I married at 19 and started doing it all myself. Was the 1st time I ever rode a lawnmower! True! Cute. And, I've Never polished silver? Only buffing and put it back. Wow. Where have I been? I have a brass deer set I like to put out at Xmas. I'm wanting to touch, but Everyone says, don't remove the 'patina'! IDK what to do?
Thank you, I just wish I would know who sent it. I often receive letters with no return address and from time to time the same thing for a gift. I wish I had at least a first name.
Also available is this anti-tarnish fabri that can be used to make covers for silver pieces, this particular 'silver cloth' is from Nancy's Notions: Green Kenized Silvershield Silvercloth Item KSS11 ; Reg. $9.99/yd 58" wide. [no, I am not affiliated in any way except as a customer]
I inherited my grandmother's Reed & Barton tea & coffee set, and found that over the course of nearly a century, much of the silver had worn off, revealing the base metal, At some expense, I had the set re-silvered, and now I polish it very rarely as the silver plate will probably wear off again. In retrospect, it was not really worth the expense of having the set re-silvered.
I would not for a Reed and Barton they were pretty standard for wedding gifts etc. But I feel that when you value something and it is something you want to keep, it does not matter. In our home, silver was polished nce a year, for Christmas. No need the rest of the year. It was the chore I looked forward to the most.
Wonderful video Sophia! My only concern about the aluminum and baking soda/salt method is that the surface almost looks damaged; even after applying some Twinkle it didn't get back to normal. I wonder if anyone knows if this does permanent damage, or whether after tarnishing again, the original luster will come back with some Goddard's or Twinkle. Anyone know?
I was amazed with the first metod, I didn't know it. In my house we polish a pair of... "candelabros" (Lumier in the Beauty and the Beast film, I don't know the correct word in English) with something similar to the last product but more dense.
I have the same coffee set and I loathe polishing it. Thankfully we live in a dry climate so it's only twice a year. I hope the Twinkle is available in Australia!
Er, ever heard of Sulphur Springs, Texas? hahaha; and there are other very high sulfur content places all over the US where even the city water smells like eggs [many are "out in the country"] such as in Illinois.
I tried the first method but didn't work… I have some pieces to replate (I don't know if this is the world ) they lost the silver and would like to redo that. I love silver…. never understood why…. I got some product but it seams very difficolt to do to me Love from Italy
Because it keeps the moisture in. You can use newspaper or silver fabric. But cling wrap traps moisture in the air and it will literally poke holes in your fine silver.
I live in Las Vegas. Silver needs polishing weekly here. It is impossible to keep nice. Sold all of mine. Humidity is rarely above 10% here, except during monsoon when it might reach a whopping 30%. Monsoon last about 6 weeks in July and August. Today it’s 3%.
Hi Sophia, the rotten eggs smell is the Godards turning the tarnish to Sulphur again. Maybe the Godards is not so abrasive. With the foil method the sink is also metal. Have you tried using a plastic bowl with the foil?
I agree with your findings. They match what I have experienced. The smelly polish that smells like rotten eggs is so gross. I really like the foil and baking soda method because it's so fast and clean.
@@mygreatchallenge the set she is using in the demo is silver-plated (you can catch a glimpse of the mark when she turns over the sugar bowl (green))...
What a beautiful silver coffee service! Now you can sit with your BFF on the gorgeous new chairs and serve coffee like the Queen of New Jersey!
I love Twinkle, wouldn't be without it. Makes life so much easier.
Thank you. This is so helpful.

For 3 generations, we have used Wright’s Silver Polish! I love how clean and shiny it makes my silver look.
yep, the Twinkle is pretty much the same thing.
It is a beautiful set when polished up. I have very fond memories of my Dad with his copper...he would spend a whole day cleaning and polishing it....and was always very proud of himself when finished...miss him so much every day.....😍😘🇦🇺

I love Silver!!! My favorite. That looks gorgeous! Thanks for showing us these different ways to polish our Silver. 😃💟🍴
Great ideas . I have used twinkle my entire life. Great product. Makes cleaning silver a snap.🌹
I prefer the Wrights Polish. I remember Dad buying Mother that same set for an Anniversary gift.

I was told to wash silver piece after soda bath to remove all residue. Rinse & dry, then spritz with Windex & buff till it shines.

Excellent video! I didn't know about Twinkle!! It's on my list now. Thank you Sophia.
I love silver! I inherited some and bought some at Goodwill. I grew up using Wright’s silver cream.

My mom has a large fish pot that is copper, what a chore it is to shine it!
Sounds like that one might take an ENTIRE jar of the Twinkle! I once heard that pure tomato catsup also shines up copper!

Beautiful silver set! Good video.
I do the dip then lightly use the creams to get the shine. Rinse and dry. The cleaners seem to keep the tarnish off longer than the dip.
On severely tarnished pieces, I'd probably try the foil/salt/baking soda dip method first followed by one of the rubs.
Did you know ketchup also works? I've used it in a pinch on small items (jewelry).

I've used the polish and the baking soda salt method. Maybe I can use both.
The problem with the baking soda method is that it s really not great for the surface of the silver it s really just in a pinch.
