@@ballistic350 agreed, but one thing in defense is guys that do cut to shape, if working with some "Super steels" you want to cut to shape. Forging will change some of the properties and those steels are made very specially. If you watch quenching methods on high end steels it is pretty cool!
I honestly don't know why i enjoy watching these videos. I have no ambition to be a knife maker, but i buy one or two every time i see them on display. 😢😢😢😢 they are all over the house and car.
It's been a joy to see a smith forging the blade rather than grinding it from rectangular stock like so many seem to be doing nowdays. Congratulations Master Smith.
I am blacksmith two and its boring to see the people who make damast steel out of crazy materials. If someone has a super workshop everyone can do that. But you work with hammer and anvil and do that realy great. Perhapse the "posers" are seeing this vidoe and shop show easy things. Very very good. Keep on going.
Thank you for watching, I greatly appreciate it! Yes I temper for 2 seperate 1 hour cycles in the oven at 400F this helps temper the blade back and make it less brittle.
Cogratiolations, nice forging skills, like the old school philosophie. "The bette you forge, the less you have to grind". There were no machines for grinding in the old days
@@reecechapman-spencer7309 A Spinning Sharpeningstone is not a machine. I was talking about modern electric machines. Gosh, there is always someone who watns to missunderstand.
Burns on bare skin at times can be greatly reduced some material melt rather then burn so it's just a matter of preference for those who work around fire
I was pleasantly surprised when you kept the wrench handle. I had thought in the back of my head "It'd be cool if they kept the wrench handle." when I saw the handle get heated I was thinking, yeah it's going now but you just gave it a cool curve and I was so happy to see the wrench handle in the final design!
I appreciate you watching, when I forged this knife I was thinking about flattening the handle and going with scales but after seeing seeing how it looked after forging the blade, I was like nope it's staying. Great minds think alike!
I got very lucky then. I'm allowed to take up a corner of a company's (let's say company A) working shed (basically a maintenance hall for drilling equipment) for free, and another one (B) that often helps A with certain things like welding or more complicated maintenance that require better equipment. Anyhow, B sometimes also helps me a bit (advice, or welding some rods to steel) and I'm allowed to scavenge their trash containers with old iron. Found a big wrench (for nuts of about 5 cm wide) that had a broken eye, and I could have it. That's probably enough steel for ~3 decently sized kitchen knives. Not even mentioning the steel's high rust resistance.
I would for sure, sadly the closest scrap yard to me is a couple hours away, even then it would probably still be worth the trip. I appreciate you watching.
My neighbor made me a small knife out of a barn nail. .He made for me to carry in my hand going to my car at night working the midnight shift. It's pretty sweet lil knife
I like that this guy forges things out instead of grinding
Sometimes I do stock removal but most often I would rather forge them to shape, I appreciate you watching!
Drawing it out on a sheet metal then cutting it, isn't forging but it still looks good, def forging everything is the way to go,

You are one of the only forge demon yt. A lot of makers call themselves forgers cause they heat and quench 😂😂
