    There are real life deep sea submersibles that use an oil buoyancy system. They basically function like a hot air balloon does in air, the big tank of oil is heated to make it lighter and then cooled to make it denser. It's a heavy oil like parrafin wax. It was used because air filled ballast tanks would have collapsed under the pressure involved, at least with the materials they could get at the time. It didn't work anything like this but it could be where the artist got the idea for the concept they used in the cutaway.

      I tried to look up about oil buoyancy for subs but couldn't find anything do you know where I could find more about it?

    • @AlRoderick
      @AlRoderick 6 років тому +8

      I got some of the details wrong from memory but I was right about using oil as flotation, there was a deep sea submersible called Trieste that went way down to the deepest parts of the ocean, it was like an underwater blimp hanging from a huge flotation tank full of gasoline, since water pressure can't crush a light liquid like it could a tank of air. Search that name if you want to know more.

    • @Karagianis
      @Karagianis 5 років тому +2

      @@AlRoderick The trieste used light oil for bouyancy, but it used Iron balast to control it's bouyancy. It sank to the bottom, dumped out two hoppers of Iron pellets then used the oil float to bring it back up.

    • @camojoe83
      @camojoe83 5 років тому +5

      The thing about the oil and the ballast tanks could be looked at like this: the oil and water trade spaces in the buoyancy tanks, changing the density of the craft without having a pocket of air anywhere in the system. Since oil doesn't compress, you would be able to force water out of the ballast area no matter how much pressure you were under and change the buyancy. Since no air pockets in the system exist, the whole thing is stronger, too.

    85 kph is roughly 46 knots, that's pretty damn fast for something in water.

    • @weldonwin
      @weldonwin 6 років тому +3

      Especially when its under the water at a signifigant depth. Also, if we accept the ludicrasness of Naboo's water filled core (Evedently the planet has no need for a magnetesphere to protect against solar radiation), then the Tribubble, must be able to stand up to inane ammounts of preassure.

    • @whovianhistorybuff
      @whovianhistorybuff 3 роки тому +1

      85kph is 45 knots slower than the fastest passenger liner ever the SS United states but faster than the Soviet K222 nuclear submarine the fastest submarine ever built.

    • @allangibson2408
      @allangibson2408 2 роки тому +1

      The K222 is the fastest submarine anyone is admitting to… It hit 44.7kts in trials in 1969, so pretty close.
      Submarines can go faster the deeper they go (less cavitation on the Propeller).
      The Russians Shkval torpedoes can hit 200kts with rocket propulsion.

  • @mdegeus97

      True the fastest submarine ever made was the Soviet K222 which reportedly achieved a speed of 44.7 knots or 51mph during sea trials so do sell the gungans short, they know what they're doing.

    1:12 I disagree, the amount of amzing engineering it took to make a sub both be powered through hydro-kenectics and the chassis is comprised of coral... this is extremely impressive. The molecular density of water is far greater than air, so high velocity would destroy the very eco-friendly vehicle.

  • @josecolon2717
    @josecolon2717 5 років тому +1

    The oil fact works when you consider that the sub is made of coral and therefore goes from storage to exposure on the subs surface via the chamber... aside from that the repulsor could just be for a quick boost although they could have done the same thing with a small rail catapult

  • @catdogsking8658
    @catdogsking8658 4 роки тому

    Fish use the same system to control depth. Just with a air sack instead. When it Flores it condenses in the sac but when it wants to go lower it absorbs it into the rest of the body. It never gets rid of the air it is always in its body.

    • @jacobvaughn9276
      @jacobvaughn9276 6 років тому

      MetaNerdz Lore well obviously the water in the tanks wouldn't be kept INSIDE the sub... It's the same principal as a real submarine... You use the surrounding water to fill tanks and increase your mass... Causing you to sink... Only difference is... In a gungan sub... They use a reuseable oil bladder system, instead of compressed air, to blow out the water and regain their boyancy. The oil doesn't make them sink or float... It's used to regulate the amount of water I the boyancy chamber. And THAT is what makes them sink and float.

    • @MetaNerdzLore
      @MetaNerdzLore  6 років тому +1

      Yeah it makes sense what you are saying but why is it that you can do a better job of explaining it than the book does. So I agree, I think you fixed how it could work, and maybe this is what they meant, but they never mention this chamber would fill with water. Perhaps they thought it was obvious, but after going over so many other hand-wavey explanations of how other ships and weapons works it struck me as another example of including some tech someone heard about but didn't really understand. Again they may mean what ur saying, but just going off of what they wrote it sounded silly.

    I think the oil works like a counter wheight, essentially changing the centre of gravity which would dip the nose down or up so that it would make the sub sink or rise like an aeroplane.

  • @imofage3947
    @imofage3947 6 років тому

    The top speed is roughly consistent with what is shown on screen in TPM. But Jar Jar, Qui-Gon, and Obi-Wan were able to navigate through the core of Naboo in mere minutes of screen time and I don't recall a transition or scene change to imply a time-skip. At a top speed of 85 km/h, it would take nearly 12 hours to travel 1000 km. for comparison, the Earth has a diameter of about 12700 km. Never mind the absurdity of a planet with an aquatically traversable core.

    The main technical problem with this vehicle is the same problem exhibited by the Umbaran starfighter. It uses a high tech solution where a low tech solution will do. I am referring of course to the cockpit canopy being made out of a force field when a durable solid material will do. It's basically the Star Wars stupid tech counterpart to Star Trek's force fields instead of doors trope. The force fields protecting their city are also strange in the same way that Venator Launch bays are. They're allow matter to pass through them so the Gu gang city should flood a d the Ve ator Lau ch bay should vent atmosphere whenever its large doors open because water a d air are matter.

    I can hand wave the oil buoyancy chambers.The storage sponge structures do something somehow with the oil's density, whatever, fine. We got floating tanks, force fields, FTL travel and comms, telekinesis, if that thing can change the density of oil, I'm OK with that.
    But what about this: 0:28 ?! It generates the power for the repulsors, force fields and engines from the relative speed of the water current it moves through, with those same engines?! This thing is a perpetuum mobile!

    I’m guessing that the ‘repulser-lifts’ were actually in the Gungan garages, not the bongo EXCEPT for ‘certain’ emergencies.
    AND I’m guessing those ‘buoyancy’ sponges where actually using something more on par with animal/vegetable oil & not petroleum, especially if you wanted certain Organic Parts to function properly. Just like how certain wasp larvae tells it spider host “its time to molt” & so the spider prepares its web only to be used up & the larvae becoming the adult wasp.

    Plus the generators litteraly break the laws of thermodynamics. Its essentialy a perpetual motion machine powered by the drag it creates as it pushes itself through the water.
    In a related question is there any cannon or legends information about what the jedi or the sith thought about the heat death of the universe? Did they acknolage it? Did they think the force could beat it or survive it? Or did they think that it would kill the force itself?
    On a third question what is the radious of naboo? Because if its anythink like the earths then they would have been traped in a small coral box with ja ja binks for weeks or months. In that case how did they not emerge stark raving mad or darkside as all hell with one very crispy gungan?

    • @MetaNerdzLore
      @MetaNerdzLore  6 років тому +2

      Yeah I'm not sure about the radius of Naboo, it might be in one of the atlas books, but the heat death question is an amazing one I wish I knew the answer to. If they haven't addressed it I think it would still make a cool video to talk about, I guess in a way they know there is a spiritual real outside of the physical universe, so all things could live on there. But do they think once the universe is devoid of all living things, the living force sort of build up in this force realm, and creates a big bang effect? Idk that's all super interesting.

    • @antonymash9586
      @antonymash9586 6 років тому

      For any educated sith with fixation for true imortality heat death as well as cosmic inflation are real threats that must be overcome. I came up with a concept for a sith researcher who transphered her essence to a halcyon so carry on with finding a way of using the force to beat entropy. And the jedi have it and tollerate her because they would like to know the answer to that particular conundrum as well.

    You are factually inaccurate on the oil buoyancy system, you don't dump it into the sub itself, you dump it in pressurised bladders making them bigger, effectively spreading the same weight as before over a larger submersible.

    Star Trek is science fiction. It’s supposed to be more realistic; featuring technology that may be reality someday.
    Star Wars, according to George Lucas, is NOT science fiction. Star Wars is a fantasy film that happens to take place in space. Star Wars is basically Dungeons & Dragons or Lord Of The Rings in space. When George Lucas said “A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away...”, it was basically the same as “Once Upon A Time...”.
    Star Wars technology is NOT supposed to be realistic.

    • @MetaNerdzLore
      @MetaNerdzLore  6 років тому +6

      Yeah we all know that, what does that have to do with the fact that they made these technical guides, cross sections explaining how things work. It's star wars attempt to be science fiction. I agree that it's not a big deal, that's why I said at the end all that matters is that it looks cool, because we don't love star wars because it makes sense, we love it because it is such good fantasy. I call out people all the time who shitting on the last Jedi because of the physics of the ships, that's not a real critique of a star wars movie. I agree with you overall, but it is still fun to point out when something does or does not make sense.
