    You forgot The Gungan Frontier. The objective of the game is to terraform a moon and build a Gungan colony. There was a cool ecology management aspect to the game that set it apart from Sim City. It was rather unique IMHO.

    When I was 8 years old I walked 4.5 miles to the nearest toys r us to play the pod racing game on the n64 demo case. a few more maybe worth a mention: Demolition spanned a lot of star wars content but included vehicles, locales and species from episode 1. Galactic Battlegrounds had two entire factions and campaigns set during/around episode 1. And there's also a version of Pod Racer for arcade that had dual controls like in Anakin's pod.

    • @user-nu9ml5xf1s
      @user-nu9ml5xf1s 11 місяців тому +2

      Demolition is etched in my memory. Star Wars twisted metal. Highlights of boba fetts head rolling round as you smash him into things, the Wookiee piloting a stolen droid tank, and shooting the big cannon on both until it shoots and bombs somebody. Also those story videos were ahead of their time for worldbuilding and graphics.

    • @KasumiRINA
      @KasumiRINA Рік тому +1

      Oh it was great! Author needs to make a part with missed Star Wars games from the era... let me see, people mentioned Pit Droids game, there's a PC desktop app Yoda Stories, Gungan Frontier, and a bunch of other strategies... Also Jedi Knight games kept being made, and they gradually introduced prequel content like dual sabers in Academy. I think a video with PC games specifically might get those together as well as KOTOR, as it absolutely codified stuff like force power hierarchy, saber colors and crystal lore, Jedi classes and expanded on Phantom Menace's mind trick system where you have a separate non-force persuade skill as well and they act differently.

    • @KamenRiderGumo

    The Phantom Menace video game was the one, which worked for me :D The whole experience so close to the movie and new setting, various droids and talkative characters in Theed and Mos Espa - this was something truly new with Star Wars for me. You need to time the blocks to hit the blasters back at it. But you can avoid killing it and rack up points on droids to get max rank, that let you get health, combo and Force power upgrades. It was essential to make game less grindingly hard. Also there's a place in first level where there are two 1ups between checkpoints, so getting both then yeeting yourself into a bottomless pit let you hoard a bit of lives.

      One thing about Demolition: turning off regeneration pads on levels makes it immediately more fun. You can still heal, but enemies stop being sponges. Best part was easily all cars feeling unique, and having endless (chargeable) unique specials, the harpoon car grabbing them behind you, Boba Fett with his tiny hitbox, Rancor on foot and smashing the rest, I loved it! Not just cover, he had slightly different shade of blue ingame. On Dreamcast, the unfinished conehead character had purple saber instead (he reused other people's attacks but had unique combos). Adi Gallia also uses red saber while in official lore she has something more boring, so does Plo Koon, yellow saber was THE thing everyone wanted. What impressed me the most was choreography in Jedi Power Battles: it was made before episodes 2 and 3 and those movies have Plo and Mace do EXACT same moves as ingame animations with unique style. Also PS1 really lacked coop beatemups so this was a mainstay.

    For the teen Anakin returning to racing... he actually did that while on a Jedi mission. Just like Obi-Wan had a pre-Episode 1 series following his adventures as Qui-Gon's apprentice called Jedi Apprentice, there was another book series set between Episodes 1 and 2 called Jedi Quest following Anakin as Obi-Wan's apprentice. Fun fact, this is referenced in the beginning of Attack of the Clones when they're taking the elevator up to meet Padme and they referenced falling into a nest of Gundarks. That happened in one of the books.
    All that to say that on one mission, IIRC, Anakin got separated from Obi-Wan and captured and forced (?) into a race. The person was the one who bought his pod after his Boonta race in TPM so he got to pilot his same podracer. But now that he had some training in the Force he was even better at racing.

    I played almost every single one of these games growing up in this era with the exception of the two Obi-Wan titles. My first two games I got on PS2 were literally Racer Revenge and Super Bombad Racing and I remember thinking Racer Revenge and Starfighter had the best graphics I'd ever seen. What's amazing is, while none of these are exactly masterpieces today, at the time I played and enjoyed all of them. They may have been cash-grabs, but all were solid in their own way and felt different enough to justify their existence with good developers behind the wheel.

    There was also a podracing game for the arcade simply called Star Wars Racer Arcade. It's fairly similar to the original game but with better graphics (maybe just me but the screen felt massive) and of course a great two throttle control setup. I played it once at a Sega Gameworks, seems like it was a pretty uncommon machine

Remember looking through the isles at ToysRus and all the phantom menace merchandise, the shelves looked like they went 10 stories high and buying both games for my birthday. You forgot Galactic Battlegrounds, which had campaigns for TPM and the OT era. There was legit a Trade Federation campaign that takes place during the occupation of Naboo, and you see how they solidified their control over the planet, as well as an Imperial campaign that followed Vader after ANH. There were even two Wookiee campaigns, the first one takes place before Phantom Menace where Qui-Gon teaches the Wookiees how to wage a proper war, as they colonize some faraway planet, and the second campaign takes place during the New Republic era where they liberate Kashyyyk from the remnants of the Empire.

    • @michaelandreipalon359
      @michaelandreipalon359 11 місяців тому

      Oh, yeah, and both the "evil" campaigns ended with simulations of what would have happened had the Naboo and the Rebels lost on their home planet and Endor respectively. Alas, the Force had other ideas...
      In the meantime, GB wasn't exactly a contemporary tie-in for TPM, so that's probably why it didn't count for the time being.

    1:33 in-universe, podracing was indeed an intergalactic sport, the then-canon Star Wars: Republic comic portrayed Sebulba racing the Vinta Harvest Classic using his new podracer (formerly Anakin's). Then it got cracked down by the Empire following the Declaration of a New Order, but it still found a way to survive as the sport was still around by the time of the Legacy comics.
    In the current canon, it got outlawed by the New Republic (less stringently as the Empire did on Legends) but still thrived on the fringe.

    It was truly a time when the relatively short development time to create a decent game opened up for a breadth of licensed games that we simply can't get these days. I wonder how many fans were created by having this variety of ways to "live the movie", even if they were not all made equal.
