- Today in the workshop we're getting a little experimental. You guys asked for it, I decided to try it. Can you make a good EDC/ hunting knife out of a shovel and would I recommend it as a scrap steel knife making resource? We're going to find out.
I really like that handle! You accomplished what you set out to do. Great!
Thank you so much!
Muy buen cuchillo !!
Excelent knife , saludos desde Argentina ¡!
Beautiful blade!
Thank you so much! I love this little EDC shape and do it pretty often.
I would have make some sheets and then weld them together But still, loved the work :)
Yes Saiserk, but we all know that you are far more motivated of a man than me. ;p hahah. Thanks!
Another clever and awesome job.
Another kind and awesome comment, thanks Paul! ;p
@@80gritschmidt51 dude oh, you never have to give thanks for honesty.
No specialists tooling but an excellent finished knife, well done fella. U.K.
Thank you so much! And greetings from Maine, USA! It's very cool to have all of you guys from overseas watching. I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you have a great day.
nice design !
Thank you so much! This is my kind of "standard" EDC knife that I make for my friends who ask me to build for them. I normally make it out of semi thick 1095 though. The shovel was definitely an experience. Haha
Great job! Can you make an AR lower out of some black walnut? Have a good weekend.

Purple Heart would be better!
@@maxwellstevens7844 just Googled it, very cool dude! I didn't even know there was something better for that application. That definitely fits the bill. Someone make it happen, I don't know if it has been done yet...
You've both got me very tempted right now, I'm not going to lie... I may just have to look into that. Personally I think bubinga or wenge would be the way to go. Or blackwood for a black rifle! Choices choices...
@@80gritschmidt51 thanks for lookin Schmidt, if they make them out of plastic, I'm pretty sure it would work, as far as I know haven't seen it...wood be pretty cool.
@@scottdoran3112 exactly what I'm thinking. I may just try and do it. Thanks for the idea!
If you had your forge running, you could have cut 3 pieces, sanded them clean then forge welded them together...Just a thought...Nice work chief...
Hmmm, that does sound like a bit of fun.. I could laminate in some higher carbon stuff too. Food for thought! Thanks and thanks for watching!
@@80gritschmidt51 ...You could use the higher carbon as an insert into a San Mai blade...Use 3 parts of the shovel as a bun and the higher carbon as a cutting edge...Glad to help!
Face Shield, boy!-Max
My face is a shield.
watching this because I found an old shovel today :) looking forward to try it out for myself. One question though, you mentioned the sparks and what they can tell about the steel quality. You mind elaborating a bit?
