Honestly, as a man, I agree. The only thing I could think was “anti-men”, and trust me, it wasn’t even that big- was the makeup scene where America Farrera’s character just villainize Ken. And I’m only judging it cause I kinda see why Ken wanted a change YK. But even that isn’t that much, it’s just one of those small thoughts you have when viewing. People saying this ENTIRE MOVIE is “anti-men” are either very sad, or prove that media literacy is doomed
I feel like LGBT+ peeps like myself pick up on this stuff because for a long time our sole rep was relegated to queer coded stuff (queer coded villains especially), so we are trained to pick up on nuance where big dumb meatheads go hurr durr and read lines on the page verbatim without any context or irony.
@@devineggins4i mean looking from Glorias human perspective what Ken did would be considered multiple crimes that would make people see you as a villain
@@devineggins4 It is in a race context originally but I always think back to a quote from bo burnham's Happy "we used to have all the money and land, and we still do but it's not as fun now". Men literally still own everything and any sense of equality is immediately taken as losing.
The elderly woman who Barbie talks to is 2 time Oscar winning costume designer Ann Roth. As a matter of fact, Roth became the oldest ever female Oscar winner when she won her 2nd Oscar 2 years ago for MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM (Chadwick Boseman‘s last movie).
I feel like the scene they were going to cut was the essence of the movie. I without fail cry at that scene every time, and thank god they didn't cut it.
As a guy who prides myself on being pretty "aware", one thing i feel this movie did really well is make the ideas it touches on, very accessible and easy to digest while also cutting deep. Simple and to the point. Love how it also highlights that men are affected negatively by the patriarchy, and Ken realizing he has to find his own self worth is a great lesson to all men.
You look so pretty in pink, I saw it 3 times in cinemas wearing pink myself and words can't express how much I adore this film it's perfection🩷. Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig are legends in the movie industry!
The woman you recognized from Matilda is Rhea Perlman, and she’s been married to Danny DeVito in real life since 1982! They are currently separated, but amicably and as close friends.

Apparently the actor for "weird" Barbie was given a fake leg for when she did the splits against the wall so her real one was literally inside the wall 😂
I love to hear that you were a Bratz girlie Monica! I was (and still am) a huge Bratz, Barbie, Monster High, and Ever After High girlie. I am forever sorry that your cinema experience wasn't amazing...I would've yelled Hi Barbie back to you!

I watched it with my sister last week and i guess the hype died down a bit because we had the whole theater to ourselves during that showing. It was really fun though we got to do commentary together and we wore pink
this is such an important movie. Especially when Barbie says at the end she doesn't want to be an idea, she wants to deliver ideas. This is such a projectile of a woman seen as a "product" or idea, but in fact (many) women want to do stuff and also inspire. Ken realising he doesn't need stuff (not even other woman) to accept him as who he is... that's how every human should see himself. Ken was also designed as a Buddy or a couple part, because Barbie was getting too independent and it was unheard of to have a female role model being on her own (without a man/husband/boyfriend etc). It was also never Barbies fault Ken didn't have anything other than her, since her world was designed for girls and they wouldn't play with a Kens house or anything :D which applies to the company sacrifying Kens individuality for profit. You don't need cars or a coat (or other people) to define you for who you are and you never shouldn't fall for all the commerce shit telling you "this is what you need". That's why you also can rip off the patriarchy, but ofcourse the system won't let you. Also the ending scene, at the gynecologist, so many take it as a funny joke to end the movie (ofcourse it's made that way), but it's important for women to know about what's in their system. Young girls hate what's down there, because it's "dirty" etc and even after the menstruation, it's only annoying. Back in the days, when sex wasn't meant for the woman to feel pleasure, women used to hate this part.
I was also more of a Bratz girl, though I did own both. And I completely understand your rant about there not being a box or anything Barbie related. Me and my friends were SO disappointed our local cinema had absolutely NOTHING (also in the UK) 🙄 Most people were wearing pink or something Barbie related (I don’t own anything pink apart from socks, which I did wear 😅 and I bought some Barbie earrings that I’m still wearing at least once a week 🤭). Love your videos!
I was so gutted about the lack of barbie box as well! We just went too late I guess. To be honest I didn't think that this movie would be for me but I loved it SO much. Everything was so fun and the message really hit
Ryan as ken was my favourite, always loved the actor and he nailed this role. I loved margo as barbie too and i still wish they were a couple cause they would've been cute together but oh well. If we had a sequel they should get together then 😊❤
18:53 I DIDN'T HAVE A BARBIE BOX EITHER, I was FURIOUS! I knew nothing about Barbie and didn't play with them growing up (I didn't discover my queerness until later in life), but this movie had me in my FEELINGS and I wanted pictures and they had no box and everyone else on my Insta had pictures in the box!
In the "GOODLIGHT"-Box is also a collecteable card! I had a lot of the Movie-Barbies like "Barbie and the 12 dancing Princesses", "Barbie in the Nutcracker", "Barbie as Rapunzel", ect. I still own the two Barbies from "Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper" because they are my favorites. ^^ I wish I still had all the other ones - I really regret selling them on a flea market. Maybe I will buy them again someday - but they are very expensive now. I also had some regular barbies, and I think I had the pooping dog and at least one horse and some of the kens from the barbie movies. (Gosh I was spoiled with toys I guess xD I also had polly pocket and playmobile and sooo many plushies - I had a whole closet just for them.) Wish I could go back to my childhood and just play with my toys without knowing about all the problems we have in the world. 😅

Very smart screenplay (also the fact this just passed the highest grossing harry potter movie in all time box office and this movie has [the awesome] hari neff in it is just chefs kiss poetry).
Ken is actually the unsung hero of this movie all he really wanted was for him and the other Ken's to be respected, loved and treated equally. He changed the social structure of Barbie land and gave the Ken's new found purpose and authority. And the Barbie's weren't forced into it they willingly accepted this new change and showed to be happy with it.
Expectations were so high for this movie that I kinda walked away disappointed. It was good, even great, but it was obvious that it was written with the idea that a significant portion of audience will be pre-teens that generally lack media literacy (basically beating you over the head with the main point).
