  • • Contra set, couples facing each other in lines with gentlemen on callers right
    • 6 to 12 couples per set
    • The top of the set is the end nearest the dance caller or the source of the music.
    • Count off by couples, 1-2-1-2-1-2 to the bottom. Also termed "take hands 4 from the top".
    • 1s are called "active" and progress down the set; 2s are "inactive" and progress up the set; at the ends wait out one cycle then resume as the other couple.
    • All active couples switch places with your partner (called "improper"). Now down each line are alternating gentlemen and ladies.
    • Looking from the bottom of the set toward the top, ACTIVE gentlemen are on the R side.
The dance starts at any time, in 4/4 time.
    1. All Active couples sashay down the set, and back up -- 8 counts each way.
All active couples sashay down the set. On the return sashay, the active couples stops early in front of their neighbor inactive couples. At this point, everyone is facing toward the center with the active couple standing in front of and between the inactive couple.
    • At regular times throughout the dance, this will leave a single couple left over at the either the top of the set, the bottom, or both.
o This couple can still do the claps (section 2) and walkings (section 3) by themselves, but before the end of section 3 they MUST TRADE PLACES.
o The set top couple will transition from an inactive to active, while the set bottom couple will transition from active to inactive.
    2. Claps -- 16 counts
Patty-cake claps -- clap your own hands, R hand with partner, your own hands, L hand with partner
    Turn to face friend
Patty-cake claps -- clap your own hands, R hand with friend, your own hands, L hand with friend
Swing with that neighbor, turning 1.5 revolutions -- 8 counts
    3. Walk down and back -- 16 counts
At the end of the swing, open up to face down the set, lady on his R, all 4 join hands and walk down the set.
On counts 6-8, each gentleman turns the friend lady (California Turn) under as both turn to walk back up the set.
On counts 14-16, the line of 4 splits and opens up to move back into place in the long lines of the set.
At this point, all active couples have shifted down the set, while the inactives have shifted up the set.
 REMEMBER -- single leftover couples at the top or bottom of the set MUST TRADE PLACES.
    4. Ladies Chain -- 16 counts
The ladies walk forward, hold R hands and pull by, putting their L hands in the receiving gentlemen's L hands.
Lady's R hand is placed in the small of the back (at the waist) palm facing outward.
    Gentlemen do a courtesy turn:
Receiving the lady's L hand in his L hand, while stepping to the R to get out of the way.
Gentlemen place their R hands onto the palm of the ladies' R hands as she passes by.
The couple then turns 180' to face back toward the center.
Repeat the ladies chain -- 8 counts each chain
The dance immediately ends at this point.
The dance repeats from the beginning.
    • The "leftover" couples at the ends of the set can still do the whole of part 1, double part 2, and part 3.
o The bottom couple uses the California Turn to change from improper to proper and become inactive.
o The top couple uses the California Turn two times to change from proper to improper and become active.
