  • • Contra set, couples facing each other in lines with gentlemen on callers right
    • 6 to 12 couples per set.
    • The top of the set is the end nearest the dance caller or the source of the music.
The dance starts at any time, in 4/4 time.
    1. Gentlemen bow, Ladies curtsy -- the last 4 counts of an 8-count measure.
    2. R allemande, trading places and back again -- 8 counts.
An allemande is done by lady turning under the joined R hands while trading places, then repeat. Another version is done by linking arms with the partner at the elbow and turning around with the partner 360'.
    3. L allemande, trading places and back again -- 8 counts.
    4. Double allemande, trading places and back again -- 8 counts.
The lady holds both hands together and extended above head level, with the gentleman doing likewise, his on top of hers.
    ( no do-si-do)
    5. Lead couple sashays down the set between the other couples, and back up -- 8 counts each way.
A sashay is where the couple holds hands facing each other, and with a sliding side step and close, quickly travels sideways.
    6. Do the Whip, and sashay back up -- multiple counts as needed.
    See below for the whip.
    7. Lead couple "peels the banana" (or march, or cast off) -- multiple counts as needed.
This is done by walking down the outside of the set, gentleman behind the gentlemen's line and lady behind the ladies' line, and the other couples split and follow them.
    8. Lead couple makes an arch of their arms at the bottom of the set, and the other couples re-join and pass under the arch, and sashay to the top of the set.
The whip is done as follows.
    1. They grasp each other's R wrist, and gentleman uses left hand to grasp and support lady's right are, and he "whips her around" in a complete 360' turn clockwise, so that she is facing gentleman #2 in the gentlemen's line.
    2. Then he passes her to gentleman #2, where they grasp L wrists, and gentleman #2 "whips her around" (counter clockwise) the outside of the line and back to the center to her partner. Her partner meanwhile moves down the set as she does.
    3. Then with her partner again grasps each other's R wrists, and he "whips her around" to the 3rd gentleman in the line.
    4. This continues, R to the partner, L to the friend, to the bottom of the set, where they transition to where she whips him.
    5. Now the whipping is done back up the set, this time with the gentleman being whipped between his partner and the ladies' line. Again, R hand to the partner and L hand to the friend.
    Notes.
    1. During the whipping, it works best to use a two-handed grasp on the person being whipped. So, lead couple going down the set, his R hand grasps her R wrist and his L hand support her R arm. The "friend" using the L arm, his L hand grasps her L wrist, while his R hand support her L arm. In this manner, the gentlemen can guide the ladies during the whip so that they do not fall down.
    2. During the whip, great momentum can be built up creating a thrilling ride.
    Tips.
    1. Keep your feet under you so you do not over balance and fall down.
    2. Whip up not down.
    3. Gentleman advance in front of the lady to receive her, during whipping
    4. Lady uses a low center of gravity during whipping.
    5. Gentlemen do not let go of her after the whip until the next gentleman has got a hold of her, so that she does not fly out of control. Do not hold on too long either.
