- EMR 810 and LNWR 730 captured on a shunt around the railyard at Asfordby Hill, Melton Mowbray 19th December 2024
The Railway Innovation & Development Centre (RIDC) site at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire otherwise known as Old Dalby Test track, has been purpose-built to support both high and low speed testing of vehicles and infrastructure using 11 miles of 25kV overhead line equipment and 3rd/4th rail DC equipment.
The Melton facility provides two separate test tracks: a high-speed facility between Melton Junction and Edwalton, incorporating 13 miles of track up to 125mph - 11 miles of this with overhead line equipment - and a slow-speed test track from Old Dalby to Stanton Tunnel, with four miles of track up to 60mph.

Great to see this site still in use. It’s been many years since I last visited Asfordby and Old Dolby.
I've still got to check out Old Dalby Depot but has it changed much from seeing this video?
@@PurpleandCoRailwayAdventures there is usually nothing to see at Old Dalby. We sometimes take our breaks there and pick up test engineers from there, but very rarely park any trains there.
I run two channels buddy. The story of the line closing and what Old Dalby Station would have actually served is very interesting and I feel it's worthy of going on the main channel. War...huh. Good God ya'll. What it isn't good for is absolutely nothing 😉
Lovely video, quality as always. I feel like spotting the full purple 810's is perfect for this channel 😂
Cheers and most definatly
Very interesting place this is. The Area 51 of Trains 😂 Thanks Purple 👍 Very good video 😊
Thank you Kirk. Yh curiosity was getting me on this one so I just had to go check it out
"The Vapours" Can't be "Turning Japanese" because it already is
😄 🤣 😂 good ol Biz Markie
I am surprised that they don't have a Gronk to handle the shunting.Does anyone recognise the origin of that yellow shunter?
That's what I'd love to know
The last 08 left in March 2022. The yellow shunters are Clayton CD40s, both formerly used on construction trains on Crossrail.
It looks remarkably like one of the tractor units built in the UK for the Hong Kong railways.
is it a new class 18? PS it’s not they are a lot longer
Ah OK. Thanks for informing us all
