I don’t think they knew. FLHH had been using a 47 which in itself was worth recording but they had to bring in the 90 due to operational reasons. It was a “snooze you lose” event!
It’s a train complete plunger Steve. It’s because trains leave the Glossop triangle without the signaller being able to see the train so it’s a form of belt and braces. The signal ahead at Hyde North Jn won’t clear until it’s been pressed.
Wow, this was my local line for many years. I grew up watch class 76s all along the line and I never thought I'd see an AC loco up there, although I'm sure it's not the first. Is the signalling of the whole line done not centrally now? I spent some time in Dinting Box in the late 80s and it's good to see it still operational. The plunger at Newton has been there as long as I can remember (I think since the 303s when the line first went AC) but I honestly don't remember how it affected us at Dinting - it's a LONG time ago! I can confirm though that you COULD clearly see the whole of the train from the box as it left Dinting heading west over the viaduct. The vegetation seems to somewhat block the view now. Is the signal box really necessary any more? Anyway, I THINK we had to wait for the plunger before Guide Bridge could give us Line Clear for the next train. There were obviously a few more boxes in between those two when it was a freight main line. For sure at Mottram Yard, Godley Junction and Dewsnap, but probably some others. So were there no pax. services running up there that day? Even if it were an hourly service, they should have passed one or two.
Good to see you Gary, thanks for being a “regular”. The signal box is still open at Dinting then it goes back to Manchester East on the Manchester side of the viaduct.
Thanks Don, those branch lines are gems
I'm surprised no enthusiasts were at Hadfield to record what must be a very rare occurrence of a 90 showing up! Nice vid & thanks for sharing 👍

Did not expect this! Thank you so much for sharing.
We have to thank our friendly freight driver Vinny for sharing.
Very green and picturesque. Thanks Don.
Cheers John, yes mid summer on the Hadfield/Glossop Loop.
I'll bite, why is there a plunger at the end of the platform at Newton for Hyde (32:39) & why do you have to push it before continuing?

Cheers Thomas.
Great Video Don, one of my favourite lines for personal reasons, and nice to see P1 at Dinting, and a nice cameo appearance too?
It wasn’t me - I’ve not watched all of it yet so could be Vinny or one of his colleagues.
Thank you 👍
This one was Coffey without the cream. Must admit I like cream with my Coffey. Still very interesting though. All the best Don. Mick.
I’m still working on the cream versions, these are just stocking fillers that Vinny provided to help me out.
Its sad that this line as lost so much of its history 😢 guide bridge is a shell of its former self. Great video Don
Unbelievable isn’t it and you only have to go back to say late nineties to be blown away by the extent of the yard.
Interesting thanks Don
You are very welcome Phil. Take care.
39:50 Unfortunate pigeon strike.😮
Yeah, it’s something we can’t avoid and unfortunately, it’s common.
Greetings
Hello Josh.
