- The Rings of Power not only cost Amazon Studios 1 billion dollars, but it also went down in history as the biggest mistake Jeff Bezos ever made after not signing a prenup. So here's the story of how it got made.

Apologies for taking so long to churn out videos as of late, these just take some time to produce innit. Much love n all that.
Also, made a mistake, it's Michael Tolkien, not Matthew Tolkien
quality is worth the wait dude
Well worth the wait!!
Fantastic video. Love your work, brother!
Your channel is awesome 👍😎 no need to apologize. Well worth the wait. Thank you for the laughter 😂. I secretly want Robyn Hood to come back so you and HeelvBabyface roast the Shyte out of it again 😁
Please don’t apologize. Hopefully you don’t force yourself to produce videos because that is just going to end in burn out.
And we need you to be in the best creative shape for season two, not to mention all the other stuff that will show up before then. eg The Acolyte 😂
🙏😃🎭
Amazon cancels The Expanse - the show that is diverse af naturally and one of the best sci-fi shows ever. Then, makes this.
The Expanse was problematic because it discriminated against people with South African accents. It had to go.
Expanse started very well … then slowly turned to utter sh1te.
Agreed, the Expanse was amazing..... however... Amazon did not make it.... Amazon just picked the franchise up..... thats why it was good...
@kwc1138 slightly harsh friend... the last few seasons were not as the early ones but...... I'd take the Expanse over RoP and wheel of Time anyway.... and S2 and S3 of the Witcher
@@altal2993 RoP is entirely garbage and yes, true about Witcher. So Early seasons of Expanse are good, especially the 1st season. But I found the last seasons, bit like GoT, wanting and had lost the magic of early seasons.
4 more seasons of Rings of Power, each worselier than the last!
Ladbrokes taking bets yet on how many there will be before they stop?
When the dwarves saw the abomination that was Gayrond approiching their kingdom, they literally...
SHOT THE FRONT DOOR.
The director's cut of Lord of the Rings trilogy is worth watching that is the greatest Cinema ever
You forgot to mention that all of the male elves will have short hair with tons of mousse and other modern product to poof it up. Even Elton started out blonde. In Jackson’s version, only the wood elves had blonde hair, like Galadriel and Legolas. Every male Elf will look like they just walked out of a salon, because Tolkien was all about male elven hairstyles.
A more interesting story than the one we got would be the story of how dwarves, elves and Harfoot (Hobbits) evolved to have so many different colors and hair textures?
@@RoarOfWolverine So you are a Rings of power fan???
Except the wood elves should not have blonde hair, because they are Silvan. Galadriel has Blonde hair due to her Vanyar blood from her Grandmother
Rings of power made my left testicle become red and inflamed. I was going to go to the doctor but as soon as the show ended it went away.
Season 2 is coming, better make an appointment with the doc...
Show nearly gave you ball cancer, fml
Better get some ointment in .....Second season coming 😮
@@wobblertv8083 im gonna watch it all together with me best friend jack. jack daniels.
just kidding, i only drink single malt.
Love that the Tolkien/Shakespeare clipart guy is using an ancient clamshell Apple PowerBook circa the 1590s.
It's sad that this will sit on the shelf of history next to Tolkien's great literary works and Peter Jackson's amazing adaptations.
“It’s sad that this will sit …”
Do you mean this video or ROP? Thankfully, ROP is so thoroughly awful that nobody will ever ever confuse it with Tolkien.
And anybody who thinks it might be like Jackson’s LOTR just needs to watch a few hours of the behind-the-scenes features in the extended edition DVD set. It is painfully obvious that nobody who worked on ROP set design, costumes, wigs, armor, weapons, fighting style, etc. watched any of it. It’s almost incredible how cheap everything looked in ROP.
I would be willing to overlook that if the story were good and the dialogue were believable.
Speaking of fight choreography, there are some great videos deconstructing the light sabre fights in the Disney Star Wars trilogy. Could they seriously not find someone who knows how to choreograph light saber/swordfights? LOTR had Bob Anderson and also a lady who worked with Miranda Otto specifically for which the actress was very grateful.
I’m really looking forward to the reviews of the second season of ROP!
(I should clarify that maybe the costume etc ROP designers did watch the behind-the-scenes things, but whoever made the decisions allowing these incredibly inferior things to see the light of day either had not seen them or just did not care.)
I still want to see an itemized list of what the hell ROP spent all that money on!
No it wont. In a few years no one will even remember this was a thing, and no one is going to buy the box set and put it next to the trilogy on their shelf.
@@TheSuperappelflapno, nobody will buy it for themselves, but I am sure there are a few well meaning but clueless grandmas who will buy it for their grandkids. And then it would be rude to not include it in their collection and instead blow it up with experimental, homemade explosives.
I love your videos man! They Kill me to Death.
Tragically I think this guy may actually have been listening in to all the pitches and deals. What a complete and utter betrayal of Tolkien’s legacy. Everyone involved in The Rings of Power should be tried for treason.
Possibly tried, but I had in mind a little trip to Mount Doom with them, just to peer over the edge. If they 'accidentally' lost their balance and/or footing... oops! Oh dear, never mind.
Have you watched the “pitch meeting” and the “honest trailer”? Highly recommend!
Also look up “Disparu” for longform hilarious episode reviews.
This channel has a playlist for ROP too! It’s some of his earlier work so we can see how much he has progressed!
This video is an instant classic. Your channel is the only one where I immediately rewatch the video because there are so many subtleties and the comedy is humourisishnessly fabtaculous. 😂
I really enjoy your illustrations as well!
Thanks for the video and have a great weekend! 🙏😁🎯🎭✨
Thank you! You have a great weekend too!
So Hitler was shot in the leg/crotch during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, where Tolkien also fought, hence, it is perfectly possible Tolkien shot Hitler in the balls....
Wonderfully written you dirty dirty biggot!

Do you watch efap, I ld love to hear him along with that crew,
@user-rz8qr5hw6s I sent this to Gary (Nerdrotic) but knowing how long he takes to read his emails, season 3 of RoP will be here faster. Az will only talk about/share this if it benefits himself.
Entertaining as always.
“I have always loved J.K. Token’s work.”
Your writing is Milton compared to today’s writers’ rooms.
Galadriel is a stunning a brave woman of power and didn't need Tolkien and the patriarchy to rule middle earth proving social justice.
31:24 I received this too. It was actually more strict than trying to leave a comment on UA-cam in 2024.
I was polite, I didn't bring up the DEI, I knew that would be an instant flagging, so I criticised the writing for what it was in a very non-aggressive, non-confrontational manner and yet, I still got that email. I was shocked, SHOCKED... Well, not really, I knew what they were up to but I did decide from that day onwards not to use Prime any longer.
As an aside: They wasted an absolute fortune on that dungheap and what have they done now, added adverts into a paid for ad-free service and people still give them money!?
I have shared this on to others you may know. I hope it helps.
only thing left out is that the writers got hired on the recommendation of the one and only jar jar abrahams
Did you know Abrams parents are real estate agents who sold houses to Spielberg, they managed to make abrams and Spielberg son to become friends.
I’m glad you’ll stick it out through season 2! I won’t watch the show but I’ll definitely enjoy watching you dissect it!
Lol I put a block on the show using Parent settings. I refuse to have faminist garbage under my roof!
Would let them watch porn before Rings of Power.
Very funny! A couple of mistakes...
Tolkien was literally handed the white feather for not enlisting sooner. However he expected to do so, and joined a volunteer cavalry unit to prepare. He did insist on finishing his degree, most likely because it would get him an officer's commission (pretty much of a death sentence at the time).
Susan Dagnall worked for a publisher, not a publicist.
The Tolkien Estate had no choice about Jackson making the films, because Tolkien had sold the film rights in his lifetime.
On a serious note, what they did with RoP in my view seriously damaged the Tolkien estate and Brand. This idiots have disrespected fans, Tolkiens legacy, his work and everything Tolkien ever stood for..... all with the blessing of the Tolkien estate...
People like you help me get over that travesty of my favourite fictional universe. Thank you for that. Also, mad respect for Tom Shippey.
Banger of recap, mate. Subbed
You know, when I was a kid/teen I remember watching legendary actors, like Arnie, Sylvester Stallone, Keanu Reeves, Depp etc. I remembered all of them and watched religiously every one of their performances. The fact I can now name youtubers with more credibility and talent than the spoiled ego babies of Hollywood really speaks volumes about just how bad this generation of "actors" really is, I mean seriously, imagine your only selling point as an actor being your ethnicity/skin color. These sad excuses couldn't hope to reach the heights of the previous generation even if they stacked together into one giant tetris block of failure.
Great Britain actually went to war with Germany and the Central powers because Germany invaded France through Belgium who had an alliance with Great Britain. Germany attacked France because they had an alliance with Tsarist Russia who Germany would be at war with because their own ally Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia which was allied with Russia. This convoluted mess is the short version
While that is all true, it is also true that Germany, France and England were simply looking for any excuse to start another jolly war against each other. The Franco-Prussian war was 40 years ago by that point and they wanted to try out their new toys. What good are armies and weapons if you just sit around not using them? Plus there were too many peasants to feed, having a quick little war over some border regions like Alsace or Lorraine is a good way to get rid of them.
Historically France and Germany have been fighting each other since Charlemagne died, its quite remarkable how well theyve managed to contain their violent brotherly urges since WW2.
Ah yes. Let’s Review Crap Writing. Who is he you ask? Right:
How does one arrange for a private viewing of the Elgin Marbles with two hours notice? How does one acquire genuine transcripts from productional conversations between LukeWarm, MeltedButter, ShippingMan, and RedHair ChestTatt regarding The Rings of Power? How does one secure a cornertable at a pub not owned by Greene King, and serves the best fish n’ chips in all of Scunthorpe on a _Thursday_ ? Well say no more!
In this episode, this “man” (possibly an Ancient Alien / AMURican Founding Father) delivers encyclopedic-calibre commentary on the life and times of The Author known as Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien with all the energy of Homer Simpson informing Mr. Burns his impounded car has been crushed into a cube. And then gives Trust the Experts level Guidance on one of the most popular tv shows in all of the Americas. That’s right: there’s two of them. And if that somehow doesn’t entertain you, this priceless commentary is set to a slideshow of some of the most renowned art and journalism of all time.
Why does he do this? Create Content, that is.
I asked him once.
We were apprentice-sommeliers at Buckingham. Those were the days - mere weeks ago, in fact. We were smoking in the driveway on a 15 minute break as some American background actress had a fit in the cask cellar. Summat to do with a tiara.
He said, “It’s about the art, m8.” _Pots and pans clatter in the background, then shouting followed by the sound of a cork being ripped and liquid pouring on cobblestone._ “All that is beautiful and sound tells us something about the truth, and what we’re doing here, whatever it is. Figuring that bit out is the whole point of creating in the first place. And if people are going to make things without care for being honest and arrogate to themselves the stewardship of Lore they don’t understand apart from the Discounted to Present sums of cash value - it, it just doesn’t sit right with me, m8. It doesn’t sit right with me. It’s as classless as driving on the right side of the road.” He shuddered as he said that last part.
I nodded and pondered the meaning of such ideas and concerns. Then he said, “May I borrow £20 to bet on Scotland tomorrow? With Dupont being out, I have a feeling they’ll get the better of France this time.”
And he was right about Scotland. But we all know what happened in the end 😔
😂
This is a comment. You deserve a cookie for that one, ya bloody bigot.
Rings of Power made JRR Tolkien's ghost try to kill itself. 😁
I haven't watched any Games of Toilets and am not a vegan, but hey great review.
Indeed. I am neither a vegan, nor have I watched any GoTs. My wife turned it on to watch one episode, because friends told her to. She saw one episode, and not even the whole one, then never watched another. She's also not vegan.
And Amazon signed up the same showrunners for season 3… because of course they did
How did you get footage from inside the amazon studios writing room?
WoW,after clapping my eyes on the "Rings Of Power" I KNEW the writing of it was a representation of 10 and 11yr olds ideas and the two show runners just plagiarised it all.....I'm glad we now KNOW what really happened!

1:48 that photo is of the bonfire in the village of Brill in Buckinghamshire, England, with the windmill in the background. Funnily enough, Brill (which is not too far from Oxford) was actually Tolkien's inspiration for the village of Bree.
I thought the “shipingman” was a manager in the shipping department. Lol.
If only Don Lemonlas had worn that spiffy safety pin earring on the show, all would have been forgiven.
I love your cutaways so much!
You just got a goddamn sub for this absolute scorcher
Mate, love your videos! You sound like you're having so much fun 😂
Noice, I was hoping for another video on Rings of Power
Thanks buddy. Yeah, it was time to bust out some RoP before the next season
I love all your content you should be easily 100k subs fr fr. This shit was HILARIOUS. Please never stop
The UK pretty specifically joined the war because of Belgium, not France.
Until that point, the UK and France had had no formal military alliance, although they had a friendship treaty (Entente Cordiale) that was most likely negotiated by Bertie (King Edward VII) so that he could visit his favourite Parisian brothel more easily.
You are back! Yay
9/10 biography.
My fav part was the job interviews with Jeff :D :D :D
Awesome video. The only thing you left out was when the show runners called the fans "Inherently evil.". I'm going to watch season 2 as this is just like a NASCAR car crash. I just can't look away!!!
Subscribed. Will be watching. Well done
That bit where the estate interviews all these companies made me die of laughter, I swear 😂
Where's this channel been? Glad I found it bcuz I had to immediately subscribe.. your wit and humor hits sharply. Excellent stuff, man.. 👏🏻
Tolkien's son was a good guy who tried to do right by his father's legacy. Whoever's in charge now is utter shitaki who would sell Tolkien's bones for fertilizer. Vile people.
And listen, when I say shitake, I mean that foul-smelling sticky stiff you found on your shoe that day that you had to clean off but found intensely revolting in every respect.
I don't mean it as a generic insult. I mean that the people involved are literally and personally that horrible.
And oh, I've read the Appendices. There is room there for fifty good movies IF you respected the rest of Tolkien's work.
It's John Tolkien's grandson, Christopher's son, Simon.
@@missAlice1990 doesn't change my opinion, but good to know. Thank you!

22:33 Finally!
Shut that front door!
Love this channel, great content i almost died to death
any hack of even average skills could have created a series telling the fall of arnor out of those apendexis, and made it an epic, well beloved story explaining why aragorn was the rightful king despite not having a kingdom.
Or you know just forget about the rings and make a story about the fall of Numenor and the lead up to the last battle, could do that in a couple seasons and it would finish right where the movies start off, with an epic battle with the last alliance fighting against Sauron's forces.
But that would mean Amazon would make something good instead of shitting on our beloved stories, which is clearly the goal here.
Superb as always. :)
Good video! I would have mentioned Amazon trying to buy the rights for Dragon Age & failing before getting the Tolkien material, also those clowns wrecking Wheel of Time with DEI stuff. Otherwise, nicely done.
Wheel of time legit had me reeeeraging. They destroyed everything just so they could cram the modern day into it
@@letsreviewcrapwritingIm looking forward to finding out how theyre going to handle Rand having 3 girlfriends in a few seasons. That'll be fun.

Bad memory lane has an upcoming season 2... The nightmare will not end

I love your content!
CJRT gets my vote for #1 Son
I am still mad how bad they did my boy the Hobbit.
I keep telling people the same thing about hitler and art school rejection...
Golden. Still lovin it dude
2:53 "However, the evidence of whether that is actually true is a little bit shaky".
Dude, the early version of the Book of Lost Tales is literally about an Anglo-Saxon man being told by elves how the British Isles came to exist.
They're well worth the wait sir 👏👏👏
Surviving the volcano blast...I really think the show runners heard that elves can live forever and thought that meant they were immortal. 🤦🏽♀️ If nothing happens, they can live a very long time, but they CAN be killed. Like by volcano blasts and such. I know Guyladreiel's brother was killed in the beginning, but I think they forgot. Also, it makes perfect sense that a dwarf, that LIVES UNDERGROUND, has dark skin. Totally legit. 😒
A small investment o' bajillion, for one of the worst fxxing productions in modern cinema history
I think it is time these 'adaptors' need to start asking themselves - WHO Exactly would have been Pissed-off if the purely Representational form of the original was Used???
Because choosing Instead to Screw Around with Beloved Content has proven to be a SHOW KILLER for no real Reason!
- Write NEW CONTENT if you want to introduce a show with Ulterior Motives woven into its bones!
rings of power, the show that made me want to read the books despite being thrice my age, and the movies having come out while I was a baby.
I don’t know how this doesn’t have more views
Sno Bowl is effective at getting rid of those stubborn rings of power.
Golden Rule of adapting a classic....Dont fuck with the source material.
My favorite scene was also the one where Aragorn opens the double doors which was a deleted scene for the original DVds in trailers and in the original Lotr FotR video game. Literally a scene found no where else except those not even in the blu ray extended cuts. Clearly many peoples favorite scene being barely seen and an example of the Mandela effect lol.
Thanks to this abomination, we now have to pay $3/mo for commercial free Prime video.
Yippee my favourite small UA-camr
So glad I didn't get this writing job due to "creative differences" since I wanted it to be...good
Im pretty sure the way you envisioned those streaming companies pitches is exactly the way it happened.
Utterly ridiculous video, love it 😂😂
I still can’t believe people actually liked the crap that was ROP! B list shows like the outpost are better!
6.9k Subs and you're this good? That's a crime
The diverse elf actor seems to be rather paranoid about evil eye. Or maybe his mom is. That cardigan... 😆
This is genius, I laughed so much I soiled myself😮!!! lol
You are funny, thanks!
Well, I suck harder than Disney Star Wars, because I agree with Christopher. You can make excuses for some stuff being cut out in order to fit a mammoth story into the running time of the movies, but you can't excuse them just making shit up that in no way improved on the books.
Such as?
He definitely had some fair criticisms, skateboarding down some stairs sniping orcs is one example that comes to mind
@@SunShine-xc6dh Girl-Boss Arwen 🙄. The sword not being re-forged before they left Rivendell. The Army of the Dead rocking up to the Pelennor Fields. Destroying Faramir's character - which was unforgivable. And, indeed, pretty much most of The Two Towers.
That's off the top of my head - and I haven't watched them in almost twenty years, so I'm sure there's plenty more.
I re-read the books last year, for the umpteenth time. I recommend it.
@carolyns99 let's just assume I didn't read the books because younger me didn't feel like sifting through paragraphs and pages of jibberish that's also add Nothing to find the actual storyline.
How does the book do it better? Does it matter that arwen save frodo instead of random elf man that apperars only for that sence disappears from the story after that scene? Rest of your complaining is so vague it's meaningless.
What's better about how Tolkien handled those things?
@letsreviewcrapwriting yeah sure that sence is a little bit over the top Hollywood, it would be extremely difficult for a human to that so effortlessly. And that's what legolas is just a plain old human.
I feel absolutely zero reason to extend any mercy to the cultural vandals who produced this show. Of all the beloved stories that have been mangled in the last decade, this is the one that angers me the most deeply. Tolkien was the father of hard world-building. Throwing out his lore is just absurd.
The Lord of the Rings films of course made changes because translating anything to film requires changes. But it was abundantly clear that the films deeply respected Tolkien’s world. The Rings of Power just reeks with disrespect.
You earned my sub when you called Amazon "Parcel Force".
Maybe Besos was such a „Fan“, that he didn’t know what he was paying for 😅
To this day I can not comprehend why they gave these rights to Amazon of all studios and not to HBO who at least got GoT on their account and wanted to do some pre-LOTR TV show from 3d age, not something far from PJ movies like Silmarillion.
Amazon bid more money for the rights, simple as that.
@@TheSuperappelflap oh youre right. :( but I can not help but imagine that with HBO approach and themes and experience (from GoT) we Tolkien fans would be by now debating aspects of morale and political decisions of the interesting and tragic heroes of 2d age and not using this TV show as a way to expel our mundane frustrations by good laugh or just trying to forget the shame of the greatest facepalm in the history of literary adaptations in TV :D
@@TallisKeeton I mean Im also still mad at HBO for what they did to the game of thrones tv show. I'm one of those fantasy nerds who read those books before the tv show was announced. The first two seasons were so hood and then they started making up their own dialogue and changing stuff so I stopped watching during S3. Didnt need to wait around for years to see how that would turn out.
It would've been so easy to get their diversity without breaking the lore too, have the story start out in Numenor, they spot a foreign ship on the horizon, turns out this ship sailed all the way from the southlands, the crew are southlanders, beautiful black skin, but they look shaken after and malnourished.
As the soldiers mobilize on the docs the surviving southlanders make their way off the boat, the high diplomat meets them and asks what their purpose is in this port.
The southlander captain tells the high diplomat that they had to flee the southlands, they have been overrun by foul creatures.
There, now you have a whole boat full of different people, it makes sense they are in Numenor, it starts off the story, you can follow the characters in Numenor and the characters from the boat, it makes total sense now.
NOPE, lets just have every village everywhere, no matter if it's north or south be populated by diverse people, because travel is really easy and takes no effort in the middle ages, you can just pack up and go across the world, grab some mickey Ds if you get hungry on the way, because they accept your Numenor dollars everywhere on planet Middle Earth, don't they?
This show really pissed me off, I couldn't finish it. I tried watching wheel of time before that and it was a real stinker too.
It's almost worth them making this crap just so you can review it... almost.
I feel a little of Christopher's pain and sadness at what has become of Tolkien. I can't help but think Tolkien himself would have some wry words to express about 'the Monster' his work and reputation have become.
Once upon a time, not so long ago, Tolkien and Middle Earth must needs be entered slowly, at a walk, so to speak, as one paces the paths Tolkien wrote: it was an inherently time consuming exercise to read the text, get the names and places fixed in relation, and just enjoy some well written writing...I have taken anywhere from three weeks to three months to read and re read the entire thing, and thus inherently feel the passage of time that directly influences the perception of a story that takes the course of a full year.
All that leisureliness and time consumed is lost if one only watches the movies. Additionally, one can then only imagine it as seen, rather than imagining what is described in the text in an entirely personal manner.
I am on the one hand gratified that so many now enjoy what I have long known to be great, but on the other saddened that most/many/a lot of people only know the story via PJ.
And I think that was part of Christophers sadness too. It became 'impersonal'
I remember watching Fellowship for the first time and then immediately running to the library to borrow the other 2 books so I could find out what happened next. Since then I have read the books several times, both the translations into my language and the original English text, and the silmarillion, and even some of Tolkiens lesser known work like his excellent translation of Beowulf.
The movies are a great way to get into his stories but yeah if you only watch the movies you will miss out on a lot.
Thanks!
Thank you!
I love this channel 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I laughed out loud several times (also making the mistake of trying to eat while watching...)! This one video legit has better writing than the entire RoP Season 1 (and...I fear..Season 2 *shudder*).
Another classic video. Never a let down on this channel
You know its a sad state if affairs when youtubers dunking on the show are more entertaining than the show itself.
A little bit wrong there chief. Tolkien had actually already sold the cinematic rights to Lord of the rings in .. was it 66? 🤔 it was in the 60’s to pay off some tax debt. That’s how we ended up with the animated one. It had nothing to do with Christopher.
And now they own the rights to tbe Silmarillian too. 😠😡🤬
>anglo education
