I'm a newcomer to watercolour, so I very much appreciated your comment about the importance of paper quality when it comes to applying multiple layers of washes. I also benefit from how you discuss the challenges you face while you're painting and how you address them. Thanks so much for posting!
I think it can be tough as a beginner looking at other artist's work and wondering why my paintings never turn out the same way, when the biggest difference is that they are using different materials! I'm glad you like my video, and thank you for your comment 😊
Wow that's just beautiful and a lovely delicate graduation of colours. You have captured lightning and the salmon pink of the sky. I've had a little go at watercolour but I do realistic drawings. I'm a bit nervous of painting.
Thank you very much! I have trees like this outside my window so it is easy for me to look outside and paint what I see. I also think it depends on how much time you want to spend painting trees, because I'm pretty sure it took me the same amount of time to paint the trees than it did to paint the sky!
Beautiful work! It's funny because I have the small version of the same metal meeden palette. Put a dab of poster tack (blue tack?) on the back of each pan and they won't slide around. Mine have stayed put even when getting bounced around in a backpack.
Amazing as usual! And thank you again for Guidry us through all the steps you took and the change of mind here and there 🙂 that’s one of the things I like about your videos, I can see that I’m not the only one that happens to go “oops” after starting a painting 😅
I'm still learning and I like being honest about my process. Not every part of my paintings is intentional, and sharing these thoughts in a UA-cam video also forces me to reflect on my work (more than I would have otherwise, at least)!
I LOVE the layered cloud effect! Can I ask, how do the blue and yellow not make green, especially in your first layer where you're merging the colours of the sky?
I’m glad you like it! I find that if I choose a warmer yellow than leans orange (or simply just a diluted orange), I will get a transitional color that is more natural. A little green is okay, but I understand trying to avoid a bright green in sunsets.
Thank you Noelle for this lovely tutorial - very helpful! I'm wondering what is the small brush for your tree details that you are using at the end? Thanks again :)
Thank you for this video; I love your watercolor skies !! Can you tell me what are those two "things" you used for elevate the paper ? (1min17s) It seems very usefull....
For me, wetting the paper is a technique I like to use to allow the paint to blend together. Being able to do this in separate layers gives me better control. When I want sharp, or hard edges, I do not wet the paper. Other artists will have different approaches, there is no “right” way to paint 😊
Hi Noelle, this is so beautiful ! I just wanted to ask you how did you avoid getting green when you got to where blue and yellow touch each other on the first watch?
For me, it helps to pick a “yellow” color that leans on the orange side. Orange is complementary to blue and will produce a color closer to grey instead of green. A little green in a sunset is natural, but I understand if you don’t want a lime green sky haha. I recommend creating some swatches with your supplies to see what works and go from there 😊
How did you work the blue and yellow without turning green? It looks like you painted wet on wet so I can’t understand how you kept that from happening.
I had read somewhere or perhaps from another video that it is the characteristic of Naples yellow that prevents it from turning green. I have not tried it myself.
Cotton paper like the one I used in this video, Saunders Waterford, or another brand, like Arches, will be your best bet! I couldn’t use the techniques in this video with cellulose paper like Canson XL and expect the same result ❤️
She pronounced it correctly. It sounds like how Americans would say hockey. Some say it like the hake fish and it rhymes with rake. But the hake brush is not an English word. These brushes originated in Japan. Thus ha-keh.
I know it has been a while, but I am glad to be back! Also, art prints of my paintings are available right now on my INPRNT! Link in description!
You have great work!
So glad to see you posting tutorials again. Please keep them coming!

You're back :)
Muchas gracias por compartir. Me puedes decir que colores has utilizado para pintar los arboles. Un abrazo desde Granada España.
Very nice. How did you do the first sky wash yellow to blue without winding up with green?
👌👌👌👏👏👏👏
Just curious what stand blocks are you using?

@@noellecurtisart Thank you !!

🤩🤩🤩
Does the watercolor technique have to wet the background paper every time before painting?
For me, wetting the paper is a technique I like to use to allow the paint to blend together. Being able to do this in separate layers gives me better control. When I want sharp, or hard edges, I do not wet the paper. Other artists will have different approaches, there is no “right” way to paint 😊

Since she didn’t answer and clearly she doesn’t tell you in the video I will cease watching this video.
She dried the area
Try looking at it again, it actually turns green between blue and yellow
In the first layer, she uses light color of blue and yellow, hence the green color made is subtle.
I had read somewhere or perhaps from another video that it is the characteristic of Naples yellow that prevents it from turning green. I have not tried it myself.
Drying after the first wash, then re-wetting for the second color. So logical.
Yes because thats how watercoor works n techniques are
молодец!
My paper is falling apart cause I don't wanna switch to a canvas but I will persevere😭😭
Cotton paper like the one I used in this video, Saunders Waterford, or another brand, like Arches, will be your best bet! I couldn’t use the techniques in this video with cellulose paper like Canson XL and expect the same result ❤️
I think you meant to sake hāke. Accent on the vowel. Good demo. Thx 😁
