I think the reason others may not think to do this is because most people (it seems) prefer bright unnatural "pure" colors. This is very beautiful and subdued, and exactly the kind of look I am attracted to. Wonderful technique, I especially love the moss!
I disagree with your statement that bright colors are unnatural, it seems a little shallow to me to think that way. Look at a field of wild flowers, how are those bright colors ‘unnatural’? Just because it isn’t your taste, it doesn’t mean that it is unnatural. I like subdued, bright, mystic, it just all depends on what the artwork is about.
I recently started using the pencils you just highlighted - I've had them for years and just started using them as a light sketch tool and was discovering some of the same benefits you talked about. I totally love your piece with the bird and how you used the pencils. This is a game changer! Thank you.
I was happy to see you using this technique! I have seen it being used before and I love your painted results!! I look forward to watching more videos making use of the water soluble graphite.
You should definitely make more videos featuring the water soluble graphite. And also show more footage of the final piece at the end of the video! Thanks, that was a great painting
Wow!! I have those pencils and didn't really know how to use them so I forgot about them. Thanks for that inspiration, I'll pull them out again. Please do more!!
I have these pencils and love them! I'm planning on drawing and painting a rose from my garden with them. Hadn't thought of adding watercolor with them. I may test it out!
Wow! What an awesome effect. I've had some water soluble graphite for years and really couldn't find a way to use it that I liked. I like the texture of it but I kept mixing it with my watercolor, making things muddy. Your technique lets that vintage subtle texture of the graphite shine. Gonna give this a try. I'd love to see more tutorials with these. Thanks for sharing!
Wow, love the effect. Love a dark background! It adds a time stamps, like end of the day or real early morning. Thank you for this, i will add these to my tool box. Merci
I think k I'm in love too.. the detail you right on ohgee just can't get thT.. yourthe first genius lady.. it's sparking passion ! So the water graphite pencils are just dark no separate colors
That looks fabulous. You have given me an idea to experiment with. I think I'll try the same thing with my soft pastels. I sometimes use soft pastel as an underpainting for watercolor, but I think it could work very nicely for adding accents of opaque pigment over the watercolor. Of course, I think I will be using this technique with the pencils too! Thank you for sharing. :)
Wow this was so lovely to watch you create this painting and I love to learn anything new about water colour pencils! I have the small plain FC pitt graphite set but not the water soluble ones but now I will definitely try this too. I have tried this technique too using a black china ink with a fine nib pen and then wetting with water to blur it but of course there is only one dark shade.
Interesting! I do the same with a fountain pen and non permanent ink. I will definitely give it a try as I have one or two of these pencils somewhere in my supply.
Amazing effects! Just to think that I’ve never liked using graphite pencils ever! Fortunately, you have changed that! Thank You SO much! I will definitely spend some time experimenting with water soluble graphite pencils! ❤
This is such an interesting technique! Thank you! I recently discovered that my Caran d’Ache Museum Aquarelle set includes a graphite pencil! I hadn’t realize because the pencil name is Slate Grey 495, but because the pigment listed in the packaging insert is “graphite”! Pretty cool! And it definitely has a bit of sheen like my other watercolor soluble graphite pencils. Looking forward to experimenting and playing with this technique! Thank you ❤
Stunning😍 I'd love to see more of this and know how much water you added to the graphite at the end. I will be signing up for patreon as I love your style, just waiting for a few more landscapey & nature type projects🍄🌱🐦🌄🏞️
I've had my FC Aquarelle graphite for years. They are wonderful and the higher graphite 6B, 8B, can make wonderful black details where you need them x Nell.
I really love the drama that you brought to a simple piece like this. Very lovely. And I learned some thing too. I’m going to try the water soluble, graphite, pencils. Thank you!
Recently I began incorporating black ink pens (Sharpie ultra fine point) into my watercolor paintings and I am really loving the results, but I haven't tried this technique. That's what I love about watercolor....it's the most fluid medium I've ever worked in and is so accommodating on so many levels. Thank you for sharing this.
I enjoyed this video and your painting is beautiful! It reminded me that I can use the watercolor pencils for details as I usually forget about this option. Yes, I would like to see more illustrations and ideas. Thank you so much!
Awesome. I am anself taught artist and have been using this technique for very long but did not know how to get the maximum effect out of this technique. Thanks for making sense for me. Love ur work.
this definitely helps my interest grow with water color and like you said, the defined depth be more precise. I have water color pencils I never use and i should look into that!
First time seeing you. Mesmerizing to watch and inspiring to attempt. Just beautiful!!! Thank you for sharing what you could've held as a long-lost-secret. 🤩
I had a different watersoluble graphite set a few years ago and hated it, but bought this set of five this year. Have not used it much but liked it much better. You have given me some inspiration! I very often want to draw into paintings because I want the punchiness that a drank line can give and the immediacy of placing a mark with precision.never though of placing this process later rather than first! I guess I have always been influenced by pen and wash, where really the watercolour is the bit that gets filled in almost as an afterthought.
Hi Francoise. Like you, I'm really enjoying Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolour pencils and your Caran D'ache palette is so useful. I bought it after your recommendation video. It saves a lot of paper and pencil. Just finished a watercolour pencil family portrait, which turned out great. Thanks for the tips. This tutorial was great. Never saw anyone use the Faber Castell watercolor graphite pencils for details and shadows at the end. Thanks and do make more videos like this. WTG. :)
Françoise, I'm intrigued because I feel sure you do this normally, but you didn't here.... Gently rolling (not rubbing) a putty rubber (kneadable eraser) over the initial drawing will take off the excess graphite, leaving just a very light, but still visible sketch. Soften the putty rubber into a sausage and roll it gently with the rounded part of your palm (the mound under the thumb). If it's a large area, the eraser will get grubby, so stretch and re-roll the eraser to make a clean part and continue. This way, there's no excess graphite to move and make a mess when going over it with water or paint. 😊
I am self taught watercolorist and never know if the technique I do is right lol. I sometimes have trouble with shading and shadows and will admit I've used graphite watercolor pencils to get them. I use to draw with pencils and pens and transitioned to watercolor due to some hand issues. Yes the colors are a little more muted but still beautiful. Love your painting ♥️

Yes about the pure colors, we have similar tastes then, I love the slightly dark, mysterious atmospheres.
Wow! Gorgeous artwork! Do you actually use the lighter water-soluble graphite pencils much? I find myself just using the darkest ones.
Same, mostly the darkest ones 🙂
I disagree with your statement that bright colors are unnatural, it seems a little shallow to me to think that way. Look at a field of wild flowers, how are those bright colors ‘unnatural’? Just because it isn’t your taste, it doesn’t mean that it is unnatural. I like subdued, bright, mystic, it just all depends on what the artwork is about.
❤love the effects you achieved, will buy these pencils.I am inspired thank you!
I recently started using the pencils you just highlighted - I've had them for years and just started using them as a light sketch tool and was discovering some of the same benefits you talked about. I totally love your piece with the bird and how you used the pencils. This is a game changer! Thank you.
You're welcome ! I'm glad to know others enjoy these tools,.thank you for sharing 🙂
When you put that tiny white highlight on the little beak, that sweet bird came alive! Beautiful work!
Thank you 🙂
I was happy to see you using this technique! I have seen it being used before and I love your painted results!! I look forward to watching more videos making use of the water soluble graphite.
Thank you Maria!
Combining graphite with any media is not new, but you did a lovely job of it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Yes i imagine other people have tried it before but it's so underrated, I'm glad to have come accross experimenting this way 🙂
Wow! Beautiful. The limb the bird sits on is my favorite Part
Thank you !
You should definitely make more videos featuring the water soluble graphite. And also show more footage of the final piece at the end of the video! Thanks, that was a great painting
Well noted, thank you!
Wonderful work pushing and exploring the potential of watercolor pencils!
Thank you for sharing.
Thank you Steven! I hope to find more ways to use them!
Thanks for sharing. The painting is attractive and subtle.thats a new technique.
You're welcome, and yes I like it's so subtle as you pointed out 🙂
I got a tin and a half pan with graphite and used them in watercolours. Darks and depths look fantastic with them.
Yes, I found a tube like this and can't wait to try it 🙂
Have ordered these pencils. Always love learning new techniques. Your videos are very inspiring

Water is great with soft pastels. It works like a fixative.
Wow, what a beautiful painting! I will need to give this a try.

I've had my FC Aquarelle graphite for years. They are wonderful and the higher graphite 6B, 8B, can make wonderful black details where you need them x Nell.
Thank you for this insight Nell, I'm finding this 8B goes fast and I already had to buy another one🙂
Those really helped with the contrast of the scene
Oh beautifully done!!
Thank you Tracey!
Wow! So atmospheric. LOVE IT❤
I'm glad you love the atmosphere 🙂
I really love the drama that you brought to a simple piece like this. Very lovely. And I learned some thing too. I’m going to try the water soluble, graphite, pencils. Thank you!

Love your videos because I love graphite. I use “Frixion” pens to lightly sketch because the disappear with heat
I loooove these pens to write 😄 good trick to use them to sketch!
I've been using Lyra water soluble graphite crayons (they are bigger in diameter) with watercolour. I love them.
Good to know, thank you for sharing!
