Entente Cordiale: From a 'long historical perspective', 120-year Franco-British alliance is unique

- French troops joined their British counterparts in the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony outside Buckingham Palace for the first time Monday, marching together in a display of solidarity between Britain and France amid the war in Ukraine. At a parallel ceremony in Paris, British soldiers wearing tall bearskin hats took part in an unprecedented joint military parade in front of the presidential Elysée Palace, as the French army choir sang the two national anthems, “God Save the King” and “La Marseillaise.” The twin events were to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Entente Cordiale, the 1904 diplomatic agreement between Britain and France that paved the way for their collaboration in both World War I and World War II. As British and French troops commemorate this exceptional historic event, marching together in the first-ever joint parades in London and Paris, FRANCE 24's Delano D'Souza is joined by Laura Carter, Lecturer in Modern British History at Université Paris Cité.

The biggest rivalry between two countries ! Enemies yesterday, allies today ! Long live our English friends ! From France
The British : our best friendenemies : We love to "hate" them and we hate to admit that we love them.
30 years ago when my sister announced to the family that she would marry a Welshman, my father was furious and then he soon loved his son in law.
My Franco British nephews are to me a symbol of the Entente Cordiale.
We admit dislike
We both love to hate and hate to love. Always space for the Frenchies in our British hearts. ❤
There's definitely a love-hate relationship between Britain and France, but it's harmless. Let's keep it that way.
We're like siblings
Vive le republique 🇫🇷 From your friends across the channel 🇬🇧🤝
Much respect from uk
Best wishes from America to our mutual friends. A quietly amazing and heartfelt sight to see. God bless and keep you.
Hello France! Britain and France stood side by side in 2 World Wars. We are NATO allies. The past is just yet! I love France!
Just that the yet!
more like 1.5
@@graveperil2169 The French didnt have a moat like we did, its not their fault the maginot line didnt extend all the way to the sea.
Um, no. Between 1940 and 1944 France went to war against the Allies and was also a very firm supporter of the Axis.
@@limitlessLtdit's not their fault the Maginot line wasn't long enough?they built the thing.
Wonderful, I have visited France many times, and have always been met with friendship and respect, some of my ancestors remain there from the Great War
Vive La France
Historical rivals who became friends through the fires of two world wars. A riveting story.
A great alliance that many countries should imitate 🤝
I think the relationship between France and UK is well summarized by this French expression: « Je t’aime, Moi non plus » / « I love you, Me neither » 😂
This alliance might become very important in the coming years.
doubt
without disparaging this alliance: let's hope not... because that would mean we are in very dark times
It's already dragged us into 2 World Wars. Let's hope there's not a third.
France and Great Britain may not always agree on everything when it comes to politics but both our countries see eye to eye when it matters. As a Brit, President Macron doesn’t always come across to me as sincere, especially when he makes things difficult for Great Britain since Brexit, but todays speech came across to me as sincere and warm. And when I last visited France, visiting Brittany I was taken aback how kind and welcoming the French people was to me and my family. 🇫🇷🤝 🇬🇧
Respectfully, it's not France making things difficult for Britain. It's the UK which put itself in a tricky situation by its own decisions. Ah English exceptionalism dies hard...
@@francoisleyrat8659 As it should.
Boris never struck me as sincere, politicians do and say what they need to, the greater issue is the actions behind any words. At the moment, both France and the UK are aware that within Europe they have the strongest militaries, and that it would be better to express our agreements strongly to "message" RasPutin about doing any more silly things without thinking about it regarding NATO countries.
@@francoisleyrat8659 Respectfully it WAS France that made the UK visitors to the rest of Europe HAVE to travel with passports. It is now easier to get into Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Germany since we left the EU.
@@thetruthhurts7675 it's a EU wide policy.
Nice to see the guards marching in the Bearskin caps that they took from the French at Waterloo.
😅
Now, now!@@cindymaceda2999
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm pretty sure they wish they hadn't every single day, these things are horrible.
I've always seen this alliance as the continuation of the rapprochement between France and Britain as the German powers (Prussia in particular) was becoming the 1st power on the continent in place of France...
in fact, ever since they were booted off the continent at the end of the one hundred years war, Britain as always allied with the 2nd power of the continent to counter the 1st power...
I'm a South African of English, French and German ancestry. There's a lot of internal conflict.
French consider themselves to be culturally superior to all other nations, they look down on others, doubt if that will ever change.
I blame the superior Roman DNA for that.
I love this comment haha lets just say global citizen
Although I enjoy a good joke about our rivalry I’ve spent some time living in France and learned a lot about myself there! You guys took me in as a friend and taught me about the finer points of cheese and women 😆
Long live the French Republic! Much love from Newcastle!
UK and France. The worldest greatest frenemies.
Let the English Fighting Spirit
inspire us all 🇬🇧🇺🇦🇨🇵🇺🇲🇪🇺
AMEN🙏🙏🙏
Vive l'Entente Cordiale !
From France😊
Well at least no one will get past the Kings Guard not even a rubber boat.
I miss Rishi Sunak in all this
I prefer the Auld Alliance, the oldest military alliance in the world.
As a Briton is there anything to say about France? Beautiful building’s, famously stylish people, and FABULOUS food. Good show.
Excellent
President de Gaulle once referred to England as 'the ancient enemy'.
Who was the woman on pr. Edwards left on the dais
They are Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh.
@Stand663 no not Sophie, his wife who is on his right, but who was the woman on pr Edward's left
@@DariaAmato-wz2xg. Don’t know, but the British Ambassador was standing alongside President Macron so maybe she was the French Ambassador standing alongside Prince Edward.
There are some rather foolish folk in England who still do not understand the positive reality that France is a major component of our enlightened Western civilisation and that it remains a seriously powerful country on every level. Vive la France.
Just England?
There are stupid people who think that England is the UK.
😡😡😡😡
Maybe they should acknowledge the same about Britain as opposed to treating us with casual derision? Voltaire himself was influenced by John Locke after all…
love you france, from england
All very smart
The British and French colonial empires reached their peaks after World War I, a reflection of the power of this agreement.
Erm No, the peak of Empire was until 1918.
@@seanlander9321 What the hell are you doing here Aussie boy, thought you hated anything to do with Britain?
A long historical perspective? when the UK, or England and France have been allies as long as England (UK) and Portugal then someone can say that is a long perspective. The Anglo Portuguese alliance treaty was signed at Windsor castle on May the 9th 1386.
So your standard is that only the longest standing alliance can qualify as a “long historical perspective”? Interesting.
Diplomacy will survive Brexit and the Tory Party simply because there is more than ever need for these two major nations to co operate on shared concerns across the globe. A change of UK government will hasten new collaborations to the benefit not just of both nations but also the whole of Europe. Rivalry can and should be maintained in sport only.
the Entente Cordiale in 1904 was Meant to be a Temporary Alliance for Pragmatic Reasons but had Same Interests in which After the Goal was Achieved they would in a Couple Years be Rivals agian
Britain and France went from fighting nearly 800 years of wars to nearly uniting into a single country in 1956 💀💀💀
Should we tell them there was one more participant of that alliance?
Upd and it was not the US
Shushhh.
I’m glad we are allies!
🇬🇧 🤝 🇫🇷
Watch the documentary "they shall not grow old". Go and see what the Tommy thought about the whole thing.
Respect to France from uk forever friends
Wasn't god save the king written by a french composer for Lois XIII but it was stolen by the British and used during the Jacobite Rebellion.

Never have I seen Macron 'BEAMING' and 'Basking' in Anglo-Franco Relations! 10 04 2024 UK
That's it lads, we've got 'em now! 🇬🇧
"Aftermath of Napoleonic wars" it was signed 89 years after Waterloo 😂
They have prepared themselves for the same enemy in 2024....and we have known who/what....Viva La France E UK !!!
Why aren't their soldiers patrolling their beaches to stop the boats? We are paying them enough.
✨✊✨👍
We don't have to like each other but we can respect each other after centuries of war. That's enough when we both see threats facing Europe today. The UK might have rejected the EU but it has not and will not abandon mainland Europe. It didn't in WW1, it didn't in WW2, and it won't now.
«The jury's out» Liz Truss ;-)
The French Scottish alliance is much older
Ah France, our eternal enemy and our eternal friend. Vive la France!
Dollars
If the alliance with France has been so strong for so long, then why does France not complete its responsibility by repaying its loan to Britain? Not a penny paid since 1931 and the debt is heading to a trillion.
The UK and France also need Germany to project power independent of US influence. (Stereotypes of efficiency aside, the Germans and Japanese have long since benefited from spending virtually nothing on their militaries!)
Pitty they took our money but keep sending more dinghies. Friends like that we can do without
There is the Five Eyes, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA, otherwise know as, Don't tell the French...
The unholy alliance lol
In hindsight the 1904 Entente Cordiale was a huge mistake for Britain and Europe.
Anyone can be British or French nowadays.
hoy hoy pak pak french & english are friends get over it.
The biggest geopolitical catastrophe in history.
Well they've defeated the Germans together twice 😊

They're both irrelevant countries nowadays
That's true, honestly i would say UK it's still a power thanks to commonwealth; but quite irrevelant. France is a very random country now.
@@thomaslacornette1282No, its the opposite. France still has control over Africa and has overseas territories. British Commonwealth on the other hand is just a trade agreement.
@@Know-Your-Nation
The Commonwealth is not a trade agreement, although it's not so much a means of British influence on others...
Also, Britain still has a lot of overseas territories like France; Gibraltar, Falklands, Akrotiri & Dhekhaila, Pitcairn Islands, Bermuda, and many more.
@@lukman_john Yes a military base in Cyprus Also.
@@Know-Your-Nation I'm sorry for you but france control not much thing in Africa except in anti french peoples delirium. France have maybe some limited influence in Ivory coast and Senegal and even those push french influence more and more away. Some french companies like Total or some for uranium are in Africa but they are not the french state. So before saying catergorial NO, verify you're inthe right maybe. I'm honeslty pissed of peoples who say NO as main argument and just say BS just after.
