- freemotionquilting.blogspot.co... Have you been eyeing the Janome Horizon? This awesome machine is one of the best domestic sewing machines on the market today. Check out this video as Leah shows you how she pieces and quilts on her Janome Horizon and her opinion of the price verses cost of this excellent domestic sewing machine.
I’ve got to say that I got a real bargain last year when I bought my second hand Janome 7700, after reading all the comments. I’m a new quilter and found my Janome 7700 for $500, which came with loads of accessories too... I’ve had so much use out of it, and my husband made me a lovely sewing room, where I keep my machine set up all the time. I’ve made so much, not yet completed my first quilt, almost there, but clothes, repairs, pot holders and zippered pouches.... so happy that I had to share! Thanks for the videos Leah, they have been so helpful...
Wow! That is an incredible deal! I'm so glad you found these videos helpful!
Thank you so much for showing how you use the Horizon. I appreciate you taking the time to do this.
Thank You for this information, just purchased the JanomeNewHome7700 machine, its a great machine!! I chose it because of its quilting ability & the 11" throat......I enjoy your tuts!!
Your instructions made all difference to me! I have just finished a work I had almost lost the hope to obtain a clean perfect enjoyble funny cool delightful quilting time. Thanks a lot!!!
I own the janome horizon. Bought it over 1 year ago and got a great price! The dealer threw in the blue bobbin case, a case of quality threads, the full size carrying case and a bunch of extra feet for $2300.00 Canadian. I love my machine - it quilts beautifully! Wish I could do what you can do but ... maybe one day. Your videos are awesome! Thanks!
I am a Janome owner of other machines including a 10001 and the 1100serger, I have been looking at the Horizon for several months (many visits to the dealer) now I am ready to get this baby home. Thanks so much for the tut Carylanne
This is an excellent, unbiased demonstration of the 7700. Leah is a particularly good, clear and engaging tutor. I have been considering this machine for both serious garment sewing and some decor projects. The wide space to the right of the needle is helpful and the precision of a great straight stitch is critical. This will replace my New Home 6000 that has been a great, trouble-free Janome workhorse for 30 years. Thanks!
moving on, i just realized it's you who has all the quilting pattern videos. you're really creative. blessed be.
I have a 7700 and I was getting really frustrated trying to quilt with it - all sorts of issues. I watched your tutorial, changed up a bunch of settings, mainly NOT lowering the feed dogs & changing stitch length to 0. I can't believe what a difference it has made!! I'm no longer ripping my hair out & yelling at my machine 😊 thank you so much for your tutorial!
That's great Gwen! I'm so happy to hear you found this video helpful!
Thank you so much! I was having a heck of a time with my tension during free motion quilting. Your video helped me fix my problem!
Yay! I'm so happy to hear this!
I have a Janome 8900 which I love! You have made me love it more!...is that even possible??!! I enjoy all your tutorials; BUT this one is my favorite! Thank you!...you have shown me a way to make my machine quilting so much more enjoyable and my stitches look even better with all the wonderful information you shared!
You're super welcome Elizabeth! I'm so glad you'll be able to use and enjoy your machine even more!
Thank you Leah Day....your video has bee very helpful for me. I have this machine and bought it for quilting my large quilts.
Excellent! I hope you're enjoying it!
Thank you Leah for this excellent video !
As always, this is a craft that is different for everyone and we all have our own experiences to share. I'd love to see a video you make of how exactly you free motion quilt on your machine Saint!
Hi Leah. I have owned this machine for several years and am sooo attached to it. Have been thinking about upgrading to a 9450 but I think I will miss my 7700 too much. Just wish it were brand new again! And I wish I had found this video of yours a few years ago!!!
I'm so happy you found this helpful! I miss my 8900 sometimes actually. They are a great line of machines!
Thank you for your response! I mostly use Aurifil or Masterpiece by Superior threads. Have not heard of Isacord - will have to check it out.
Definitely! It's a really nice thread usually sold at Bernina dealerships for embroidery. It's wonderful!
I've been very frustrated with my machines! VERY frustrated! I started out on a Pfaff -- that was busted in a few months, and I exchanged it for a BabyLock. That has been giving me problems for the past couple years, so when I took it back to the store for the umpteenth time I demanded a new machine that simply WORKS. The recommended the Janome. To be perfectly honest, I didn't know if it was going to work; my other machines all seemed good for the first week. THANK you for this review!
a FYI, I have used the clear foot for years to piece, I have the tiny metal extension for guiding the fabric, it is super for making sure that fabric doesn't slide to the right of the foot, I also add a dbl thickness of painters tape to the machine to guide the fabric along for longer piecing such as log cabin and borders. Just saying, Carylanne
I bought this machine (used) about a year ago. Love it. But the place I bought it from went out of business. I was suppose to get free classes on it. But I'm am just now free to where I could go. Very disappointed with the shop. The owners didn't even tell the employees until like the day before. So your videos help.
Sorry to hear that. Things have been difficult on small businesses and they might not have even been aware they were in trouble until the last minute. I'm glad you found this video helpful.
Very nice tutorial. Thank you.
Hi Leah, I'm so happy to find your tutorial on this Horizon 7700 sewing machine. I had it for over a year and love it very much. However, I do wondering how other quilter setting up their machine when they are piecing and quilting. You just gave me the answers I need. Thank you. By the way, have you try the Quilting stitch #93? I found it is similar to D1 with shorter stitch length. Thanks again and looking forward to more tutorial on this Horizon 7700 in the future.
Extremely helpful
Thanks for the information. Have had this machine for 5 years and haven't done any fmq on it. This makes me more confident to give it a try.
Excellent! I'm so glad to hear this tutorial helped!
Leah, thank you for this video, this tut was the reason I decided to get the Janome New Home 7700 instead of the 6600 or 6300. I got a fantastic deal with my Viking trade in for only $1250. I'm a beginner quilter and it was so easy straight out of the box and stitches beautifully! I have a question, do you use the foot pedal? I saw that you recommend putting the speed up all the way but for a beginner should I use the foot petal? thanks so much!
Hi Leah,
Loved the video on the Horizon 7700. Could you tell me if you have ever tried the Horizon Memory Craft 8200 QC? If so what were your thoughts on this machine.
Thanks I had to watch the Basic Video instructions again......Right now not FMQ......Love your Video!!
I am about to buy this machine since I am now ready to upgrade from a 20+ old Janome machine. a floor model is available that is now within my budget.
I also have the Gidget II table that I love, but it is set for my other machine. Did you have to change the links underneath a great deal to have it fit the Horizon 7700? I think you are using a different clear table over the top of your gidget II as well. Is that correct? Did you not need to buy the extra insert from Arrow?
Thanks!
I'm looking at buying the 6600, do you have any experience or comments on same? Thank you.
I will be surprising my daughter with a Janome as a gift. I'd say she is a newer/intermediate level stitcher and is currently using a sometimes available Singer that is loaned to her. Janome is what she prefers. Is the Janome 7700 primarily for quilting or can she also do garment and other work on this as well? She does not quilt yet but has plans to and so I'd prefer to get her a machine that she can grow with and not out of -but- I don't want to frustrate her with the wrong machine.
What is it that you are using to cover the feed dogs with?
I am having a very hard time with tension. The blue dot bobbin cast is low tension for free motion quilting. Has anyone used it. Did it make a difference???
I have a new Horizon also, and I do tried the feed dogs up and down. No difference in my stitches. what I would like to see is a better formed stitch in the back of the quilt.
i have recently discovered that when doing free motion and embroidery it is imperative that the feed dogs be out of contact with the fabric. also, all sewing machines give better quality stitches when run at a moderate speed. if you are doing free motion at high speed, you'd better know where you're going. it can get out of hand real fast.
Hi! I often watch your vid's and really appreciate this video post on your janome, since I have the same. I am wondering if you can assist me with a questions I have in respect to thread painting. Have you done this on your janome? If so, do you have any practical set-up tips? For instance do you hoop your fabric, do you use a stabilizer, can you use your twin needles, do you have any suggestions for tension set up? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated T/Yand happy stitching :)
My Janome 7700 will not sew over seams and pulls all corners down into the bobbin case. Stitch length5 on this machine is as small as a stitch length1 on a smaller nachine. Machine will not pull fabric thru and I have
to push and pull. I do not get good results on this machine. Any suggestions?
Leah, I'm wondering if you feel the same way about Janome Horizon 7700 now, which is a full 9 years after you did this video? I bought this model secondhand and feel it really has some great features and now I'm just about to start FMQ with it. Your video tutorials are the best because you give your honest opinion without input from the manufacturer. I look forward to your kind reply. Thank you.
I definitely still like Janome machines and have just recently become a dealer. The 7700 does have a fault in the needle plate. The automatic feature was very breakable and may have been fixed with a new needle plate. I really liked mine, but traded it for a Horizon 8900 when they came out a few years ago. Right now I'm working on videos for a Janome 1600P and really enjoy it. More to come on this front!
@@LeahDay what machine are you using now.. i bought a janome mc 7700 but it seems like a disliked machine
Thanks for all your great videos Leah!! I'm very curious, what did you trade your Janome 7700 for? I have the 7700 QCP and absolutely love it!
I traded it in for a Horizon 8900 in Jan 2013.
I have followed your videos and information since the Horizon first came out. I love the machine and your video helped me to learn FMQ. After all this time, I'm still learning new things about the machine. I like to piece with a 2.0 length and my needle set at 5.9. How do I set the machine so this setting is automatic when I turn on my machine. I had it set before, but, I can't remember how to do it again. Thanks so much for your time.
Most machines do not have a memory feature like this. You'll just have to hit the buttons to lower the stitch length and adjust your needle as desired!
I was able to use the FS function, Favorite Stitch. Once it’s set with the stitch length and width, each time I turn on my machine, my favorite stitch is there. Very convenient.
How much does the janome horizon cost
Where did you get the clear piecing foot that fits the Janome?
Most likely this was a foot I already had on hand.
Leah, did you ever sew vinyl on your 7700? Did you use a special foot and plate?
Nope, I never tried vinyl on this machine. I can order you an Ultraglide Foot that might work better. You can contact me at leahday.com/pages/contact-us
Hi Leah,
I'm considering a used Janome 7700. I have read mixed reviews on the machine. Would you still recommend it? Would really appreciate your answer. Thank you :)
I would recommend the Horizon 8900 instead. The 7700 has a fault in the needleplate that's basically going to break eventually.
Thank you very much for your reply! I love your videos :)
lkrose28 what is the issue w/the needleplate you’re referring to? I’ve had the 7700 for 10+ years & am not aware of an issue. I want to be extra careful now.
Hello Leah, I own horizon 7700, I have a tension problem when I quilt. I can quilt just 9 tension setting, when I try the other numbers I see that there is eyelashing on the backside of my quilt. Dealer tald me that there is no problem, it's ok.What do you think? Is it ok or there is a problem whit my machine, thank you ☺️
Most likely you're not threading the upper tension properly. Make sure when you thread the machine that your foot is in the UP position so the thread can slip between the tension discs.
@@LeahDay thank you, I will try again
You made a point of not dropping the feed dog but you covered it, right?
Hi Leah, did you say QBH-foot for quilting?? I didn’t hear or see it quite well...
Yep, this was the QB or convertible foot. It should come with the Horizon if you buy one, or you can find them sold for low and high shank machines too.
Leah Day Thanks! I have another Janome machine, but I’m shore I will find it!
Wilma Ha
Also, how did you change the needle plate to a single hole?
This machine has a single needle hole feature that will automatically pop up with certain stitches. I believe I was using the D1s stitch which is a straight stitch using the single needle plate.
I'm not a quilter, and the store was quite amazed I wanted it for garment sewing, but I love it. Got it for the dual feed feature for heavy duty garment construction. I've had it 3 years or so and never knew that single needle hole feature was there!! I've had more trouble with lightweight fabric jamming up in there! You've revolutionized my sewing!! Thank you!!
Hi Leah, I have a question, can you change the size on these to make them larger? Thanks.
The size of the machine? Or the size of the table or a tool I'm using?
I have a Janome 7700 and wanted to know if there is a way to increase the size of a letter when monogramming it?
Jan Hallgarth
I believe you can increase and decrease the size using the stitch width. It might be something to play with at a dealer just to be sure it does what you want. I traded my 7700 more than a year ago, so I can't go check for you right now!
ok, thank you!
Is the Janome Horizon 7700 a low shank or high shank machine?
It's a unique-to-Janome shank. It must use Janome branded feet.
j ai vu quelques videos de la janome horison mc 7000 moi je possede une singer brasilienne je veux bien avoir une janome je suis en tunisie qu el est le prix et comment pourrai je l avoir
I have a question: 1. what is your Foot Pressure Dial setting 2. What is your Thread Tension Dial setting?
I set the foot pressure to Auto and the tension was usually set at auto too. I mostly used Isacord thread with this machine and my 8900.
Why does my thread spring back when I cut it
It's under tension. Pull it out a bit more so you have more slack and it won't do that.
Why do you use the scrap piece in between pieces?
The scrap lifts the presser foot slightly so it's at a nice height for quilting. It also reduces bobbin thread waste because you don't have those long messy thread tails before and after each piece. Does that make sense?
Dear Leah, may I know how much do u pay (US$) for this sewing machine ?
What about maintenance ? Thank u. ;-)
She said around $3000 (US). You can get them a bit cheaper now because there are newer models, but this one does everything you'd need if you do patchwork, quilting ans all kinds of sewing. It's extremely sturdy and quite easy to use. Like almost everything - practice makes perfect!
new machine available, Janome Horizon Memory Craft 9400QCP, wonder if you are going to invest in this one? Sales are available because it's new, I just got an email from dealer about it.
Probably not. I've been using a Juki Exceed F600 that I've been very happy with. I've shared a few new reviews which you can find right here: leahday.com/pages/sewing-machine-review-juki-exceed-f400
Tina Fisher
wow, for 3k that is a rip off.. the shutting on/off machine reset thing is def. a deal breaker for me. I'll take the HD3000 anytime
Why don't you agree with slowing the machine down?
I changed my opinion on this after teaching my husband to quilt. Personally I think it's best to have access to the full range of speed - this way as your hands speed up you can put your foot down and keep your stitches balanced. But Josh did find it easier to quilt with less speed available on the machine. Go with what works best for you!
