    Thank you Leah, my aunt re-introduced me to you.I was complaining about my free motion technique so am going try again - not going to drop feed dogs.

    Thanks for all the hard work in producing the videos. I used your idea about not dropping the feed dogs and turning the stitch length to zero. i can't believe how much better the back stitches look. They look just like the top. Thanks again.

    I was having trouble with my FMQ -- skipped stitches, broken thread, etc. I already had cleaned/oiled, changed needles, re-threaded, checked tension, etc. So -- I went back to this early video to see if there was something else I needed to try. Yes, leaving the feed dogs up. Instantly, my 50-yr-old mechanical DSM sounded better and ran more smoothly. I could HEAR it and FEEL it under my hands. I had to fiddle with the tension a bit, but this really worked. Thanks.

    All I can say is WOW, all of your tips and tricks were absolutely amazing. I'm going to try NOT dropping the feed dogs and reducing stich length when I do my next piece. The basics are absolutely wonderful. Thank you, the only thing is unfortunately I don't have a big enough space to be able to add side tables, but I am sure with practice I can get better. Yes I MUST wear gloves with rubber fingers as I have NO grips on all my fingers.

    Thank you so much for the hints, Leah. I have a Janome 7700 like you do and have been struggling with FMQ. Your hints to not drop the feed dogs, use the single hole needle plate, and the Supreme Slider have made my FMQ so much better. Now for tons of practice!

    Thank you so much for these tips! I have a generic foot for my Kenmore machine and while the hopping didn't bother me (its minimal) the tension sure did! My machine was making large loose stitches and like you said, forcing me to quilt very very fast to achieve a good look. By simply changing the stitch length setting to zero and not dropping the feed dogs my problem was solved! Thank you SO much!!!

    Thank you so much for this video! I was afraid I wasn't going to be able to free motion quilt. I modified my darning foot, and left the feed dogs up, and it works like a dream!

    Leah -- thank you so much for your tutorials ! I'm taking a class on art quilting at my senior center . I'm a TOTAL beginner ! I made my first one ,it's okay , but after watching your videos with all your hints and tips -- I'm ready to brave another one :)
    You have a such a wonderful teaching technique ..calm and encouraging ! You also addressed things that a beginner would ask about . ( like machine speed ! )
    I bought my first free motion foot ... I'm (maybe) doing it :-)Thanks Leah !!!

    Thanks so much for the details on thread tension, this is something I really struggle with when using free-motion and I never thought dropping the feed dogs would directly effect this.

    First - thank you so much for responding! Second - I'm happy to know that the problem I'm having could be the machine's fault and not mine. LOL. I'm trying hard to learn as much as I can so that I do all the right things. I can't believe how frustrating it can be to try and make a baby quilt! Again, thank you and I will try to avoid quilting backwards by turning the quilt when I can as much as I can to avoid it...

    Thanks for the information. I have been quilting for a long time, but am new to free motion quilting. (I think I've just been to scared to try it - ha ha). I've been practicing but it seems the hardest part is getting my quilt to move smoothly under the needle. I think the gloves (and mat) are just the answer - I'll give it a try :)

    I owned one for awhile, but never really got used to using it on my machine. Mostly I found it awkward to handle and to quilt within the frame section. Then again, I know a lot of quilters that swear by them so I'd look around for a friend that owns one and see if you can try it out before purchasing one of your own.

    Hi, Your videos are fantastic! I'm grateful to people like you who share your wonderful skills online to help beginners like me!
    I'm having trouble finding a video or explanation on how what to do with the loose thread ends when you begin to stitch. I've seen you pull the bottom one through to the top and say there's another video on what to do with it, but I can't find a link & don't know what to search. Please help! Thanks!

    I like it that you don't drop the feed dogs. It helps us who can not due to using older machines learn how to free motion quilting. I have a question about the slick peices. Are they safe to use on older machines with decals, and what size should I look for? (My model is teh Singer 66, if that helps)

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay  11 років тому

    The Supreme Slider gently grips your machine bed, it's not a "sticker" with that gummy stickiess so no, I don't thing it will pose any problems for your machine. I'd suggest starting with the smaller size Supreme Slider to get started.

    Leah, I'm a new subbie so I've been marathon watching your videos. Until I heard you say not to drop your feed dogs while free motioning quilting I was ready to give up!! I had tried everything I could to stop the thread nesting. Your idea really did the trick. I am however having a problem when I sew backwards or away from me. Often I get this very long stitch where the needle didn't penetrate the fabric at all. It looks like alot of stitches were missed. I hope I explained that well enough. What am I doing wrong?

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  9 років тому +1

      +TarandonDesigns - I'm glad to hear this video helped you! It sounds like you're getting skipped stitches, which are an unfortunately common issue when quilting backwards on many machines. Best case - avoid that direction. Really get to know your machine and figure out exactly how many stitches you can go in that direction before things start skipping. I once had a machine that could go approximately 3 stitches before skipping and I manged to quilt many big beautiful quilts even in spite of this issue. Just keep practicing and really get to know your machine and all the little quirks about it. It will get easier the more time you put into it!

    Leah, I've been looking at the quilting tables you suggested and from what I can tell, it appears that you use an additional plexiglass support around the sewing machine to fill in the gap where the machine sets . . . ?
    I haven't watched all of your videos yet, so maybe you have already published information concerning needles. Should I simply follow the same guidelines as regular sewing as in free motion quilting?
    I so appreciate you sharing your techniques, your work is inspiring and beautiful

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  9 років тому

      Hi Laurus - The tables I use and sell on my website come with a custom cut insert which will fill in the gaps around your sewing machine. You can find them at: www.leahday.com/shop/product/affordable-sewing-table/
      As for the needles - I use Universal needles which I also use for garment sewing and piecing. I believe you need to use what works for your machine, and these have always worked the best for me!

    Since you do not drop your feed dogs, does the back of the supreme slider get any abraision from the feed teeth still moving??? I just got my queen supreme slider and I love it, just don't want to damage it!!

    I notice that you have some space between the machine & the cabinet. How does the slider work over that gap? I have the same problem as I've got a free-arm Janome with the wrong size plastic "table" so I have the gaps, as well.

  • @philby611

    I finally got up the nerve to actually stipple some quilt squares I have. The first one went OK. Now I'm on the second one and the thread keeps breaking. I've played around with the top tension and it still keeps happening. Sometimes it goes OK, and then the thread breaks. Do you think it's a problem with the machine?

    Hi Leah, I just bought a Juki TL200QI sewing machine so I can learn quilting . Can you advise me what generic quilt/darning foot I should buy ? Is the machine considered high or low shank? I want to fix it like you suggested in your video with open to and rubber band
    . Love you videos! Thanks so much June

    • @LeahDay
      @LeahDay  8 років тому

      +TheLadycopeck - You'll need a high shank foot for this machine.

    And what if your machine will only reduce the stitch to .02 and not to zero? Should I then drop the feed dogs?

  • @peggyfarrell6991
    @peggyfarrell6991 11 років тому

    I have looked for a single hole needle plate and it does not appear that they make one for my Janome DC 1050. What were they thinking? lol

  • @slewislorum
    @slewislorum 12 років тому

    You stated that you don't drop your feed dog and just switch thread length to zero...is this still true?

  • @LeahDay
    @LeahDay  11 років тому

    Nope. Just put it as low as the machine goes. Sometimes I don't do this. It really depends entirely on the machine. Some stitch fine with the stitch length on the same setting as piecing. It just depends on the machine.
