I spend 3 months of the year in PV. The rest of the year we are in Chilliwack, Canada which is about the same size as PV. I find that people are as friendly as you are. Smile and greet the person in front of you. Kindness is contagious wherever you are.
Hello fellow canadiens! Yes you are completely right! However the vibe is completely different when other also initiate the friendliness and not walk with their head down ignoring life around them (talking about Toronto lol)
That is so interesting! I was so excited to be back in friendly/polite Canada and immediately noticed it. Simple gestures like common polite gestures to mothers with children too, opening doors, interacting with the child, being more mindful towards you. Even more so with the politeness/kindness from service workers, weather it was through phone calls, stores, grocery stores, restaurants, transportation services etc. Everyone is so nice and friendly and even striking up a little conversation with you. My experience in Edmonton 🇨🇦 The drug use/street population is very sad to see I agree and in Mexico it’s nice to not see so much of that happening or feelings unsafe due to that.
Coming back to Vancouver is the same, my 1st month or so is a huge adjustment. Canada is always mentioned as a friendly country. It isn't. You notice this more so as a Canadian when you go abroad and come back. You realize how grumpy Canada is. I suffer from depression, and it hits me big time when I come back to Vancouver. My whole lifestyle and mood changes from PVR to YVR.
It's very hard to adjust to! Being back we actually enjoyed just going out in nature to walk around and relax where there wasn't as many people. In the city we felt like we constantly had to have a guard up ready for something to happen.
I live in Sarnia, ON. Since you lived in Toronto, you probably know where Sarnia is. In 2018, my wife and I flew into Amsterdam to pick up a river cruise on the Rhine. My first time in Europe. We met the tour representative and he told us to go and have a coffee at the coffee shop and he will come get us when other people have arrived. We sat in the coffee shop surrounded by people all of whom were visiting, laughing and gossiping, all in different languages. I said to my wife, “Its like we have never left Toronto!” Toronto has become a very multi-cultural city. Totally get what you are referring to!!
Yes we definitely know Sarnia! I find that it sometimes takes away from the experience of travelling (unless you travel to an english speaking country of course). We have travelled to many countries where they spoke NO english and those were often the best tripsfor us.
Aloha, I live in Hawaii, on the Big Island, in Kona to be precise. I moved from the mainland US 19 years ago. Things are much slower here as well, people are friendlier. It's nice to live in a place where good weather doesn't make the news. When I travel, anything cooler than 19° C is cold and all the food and restaurants seems real cheap because Hawaii is very expensive. A gallon of milk at the grocery store here is $10. Thank God for Costco here. I'm amazed when I go back to the mainland how great the restaurant service is and how cheap the food seems. Here you just need patience. If you don't have patience, you do not belong here. If you're at the post office and someone is chatting with a postal worker for five minutes when there's 20 people in line, you need to chill here. They don't do that on the mainland. I'll be traveling to Vancouver BC in December, have a three hour layover, meeting my GF at YVR and we off to Puerto Vallarta. My niece lives in PV, her and her husband have a clothing shop in PV (Los Muertos Beach Clothing Co) so I do have their perspective of where to go eat. But I'm getting many other people's perspectives of where to eat in PV as well. That's why I'm watching your channel and enjoying it.
Thank you for sharing and the pace of life in Hawaii seems to be similar to here in PV. Price of random things are also very expensive here...even at costco. Glad you enjoy the content, we will be dropping more restaurants we've tried shortly :)
Correct. Multiculturalism does not exist in Mexico. There is only one way to do things. I have been reprimanded on several occasions for minor social transgressions.
@ ok I see thank you! Right, that can happen too! And happens in Canada as well, not every place would accept those bills. So how do you deal with that? Can the bank exchange that for newer bills? I guess it is hard to prove that they gave those bills in the bank machine, unless you record a video each time 🤔🤦🏻.
Living in Vancouver for 8 years now. I have 2 Canadian friends. Only one of them invited me to their house. This place is very cold and unfriendly sadly.
Hi Marc & Kathleen. I think the two of you described it perfectly, life in Toronto. The whole rush & anger thing is so prevalent. I experience it everyday travelling on Public transit, not just Costco. That is no exaggeration. The easy access to payment by card is something that can be addictive if one is not careful. I find I spend more because of it, rather than I did if I had to use cash. Dollarama is evil for that. I am mindful of spending, but it is still tough. I think when I move to Mexico, many habits from Canada will disappear. The changing weather in Toronto is challenging to prepare for. I end up wearing more clothes than I really need to. Kind of envy Marc's T-shirt and shorts life style in PV. You and Kathleen are right, it has gotten worse with the homeless situation. I wish it wasn't the case. But I think being away and coming back, you see things much more clearly with reverse culture shock. I am glad that both of you are back in PV, and that the kids can go out and play easily. Looking forward to more PV. Victor
Hey guys, I am happy to see you both are back. The money thing in Toronto feels like a crime issue. They would rather deal with a card over cash! Can't blame them I guess! I think I should feel good about living in a small town in BC. I have seen Vancouver be that bad and it is heartbreaking. Thankfully just a fairly quick visit. LOL. We are headed to Mazatlan within a month for only a couple of weeks with both our kids. Looking forward to good times! Take care!
Totally, I lived in Lahaina for 10 years and moved back to Seattle. Miss the Aloha and patience and “closed- gone surfing signs” in town 😂 I can’t wait to get to Mexico!
I lived in Southeast Asia for several years and found coming back to the states very difficult with reverse culture shock. Interestingly, I found the driving to feel scarier in the states because everyone was texting and driving. The lack of acknowledgement you spoke about felt particularly challenging for me. I suppose reverse culture shock happens more when you align stronger with your foreign country.
Oh man! Yes!!! Costco in toronto is the worst! People always want to fight there! Reverse culture shock is real. So hard to make friends and when I lived I'm toronto I felt like I didn't belong there. So glad I moved😅
@Morelifediaries I know! There were 2 incidences in Toronto where I almost got run over in the parking lot there just because people didn't want to stop while I was walking. Visiting Costco here in Mexico City it's so nice and relaxing even when it's super busy
This video isn’t a comparison video about Canada and Mexico but if you insist - The Mexican government hasn’t stolen about half of my income so that’s a benefit and my kids go to private school free of the “woke” agenda so that’s an even bigger benefit 😊
I'm from the GTA. I have lived in Huatulco for almost three years now. I'm planning to return to Canada next spring and stay for five months to visit family. I need to remember to actually stop at stop signs in Canada when driving. 😂
