Brother ScanNCut Tips & Tricks - Creating a Stamping Mask or Stencil - Mylar - Sentimental Rose

- In this Brother ScanNCut Tips & Tricks video, you will learn how to create a stamping mask or stencil using your Brother Scan and Cut. The stamped image we will cut out is from the Sentimental Rose Paper Pumpkin kit by Stampin’ Up! It is the April 2019 kit which contains all of the supplies to make 9 note cards. It even includes a card box. This technique is a way to create alternate projects using the Sentimental Rose April 2019 Paper Pumpkin kit. First, I stamped a rose using Memento Black ink. Then, I used a pencil to outline it so that the outline would be recognized. Then, I used Scan to Cut data to scan in and save the outline of the rose. Then, I removed the rose and added the stencil material. The settings used with the CM350 or ScanNCut2 are:
Deep Cut Blade = 6
Speed = 2
Pressure = 3
After cutting the stencil material, I demonstrate how to use it. I used the stamping mask to color the inside of the rose in Flirty Flamingo and the outside leaves in Mint Macron. This gives the leaves the appearance of being behind the rose. Finally, I shared a Mother's Day card I created using this technique.

I agree with Suzanne, what a great instructor and channel. Glad I found you as well.
Thanks so much Debra. I appreciate your comment. Happy New Year!
Great tips
Glad you like them! Thanks for being here Carmen!
This was so informative. Thank you Kim. I too am so glad I found your channel. I have become a patron also to thank you for all you have provided for us crafty friends.
Awesome tutorial. Great 👍🏻
Thanks Kimberly. Everyone loved this Paper Pumpkin kit. The rose was so large and easy to cut out in different colors.
I can’t tell you enough what an absolutely wonderful teacher you are. I am so glad I found your channel. Thank you so much!
Thank you Suzanne! You are the first comment and you made me smile today! So glad you are watching.
Awesome tutorial! I had noticed a couple of the stamp companies were now offering the stencils with their stamp sets but had never thought of making my own. I learn sooooooo much from your tutorials! TFS!!!!
Thanks Jan! With the ScanNCut, there are so many new possibilities for crafters. I still remember cutting masks out by hand so anything which saves time is great for us.
I totally agree with Suzanne! You are a wonderful teacher. I don't use my scan n cut enough but watching your videos has made me get it out to use it more!!!
Thanks Angel. Woo hoo! I love when viewers are reading each others' comments too. I feel like we are a real ScanNCut community here. You are all becoming super users. I hope you show your ScanNCut some love by using it more.
Thank you! I am going to make stencils. I bought some blanks at Walmart but haven’t tried yet. So I am very grateful that you showed the blade and pressure info. You’re the best!
Thanks Jackie! I have used a blade depth of 4 before and it worked fine but now it “wants” a blade depth of 6 to work. It is a good idea to do a test cut on a tiny area so that you don’t cut through your mat.
Oh my gosh - I love that we can use our Scan N Cut to cut stencils and masks. Thanks for the inspiration. I'm going to go do this right now to use with my April Paper Pumpkin kit. What you did sure makes coloring that rose quick!
Thanks, it makes me so happy when my viewers apply what they learn right away. This is just one more way to make the roses pop.
You always do the very best video tutorials. They are not all fluff. I learn so much!!
Thanks Nancy! I respect the time of my viewers because I know time is something we can never get back. Glad you are learning a lot!
Thank you! I have wondered how to cut out stencils, and even bought the stencil material. With your video, I am confident, I can do this as well. Thanks again, I have learned so much from your videos. I even cut eggs, for my grandchildren to color for Easter, after watching your video. I am using my Scan N Cut more because of you and your videos. Keep up the great work and providing us with knowledge and inspiration.
Thanks so much Judy. Kids also love putting rick-rack and stickers on the eggs. They are so easy to cut and provide endless fun. One little girl in my Craft Club came up to me and said "I made you a fan." She handed me a bunch of eggs glued together in the shape of a fan. I loved her creativity. Glad you already have the stencil material so you are ready to try this technique.

You are too cute. I love watching your videos. That is a pretty card. And I am learning how to use my scan n cut. TFS
Thanks so much. I have courses on the ScanNCut in addition to loads of videos on UA-cam. These are very inexpensive with my coupons so I hope you will check them out. thepaperedchef.com/brother-scanncut-courses
Thanks for sharing, awesome tip!
Glad you enjoyed this one!
Great video, I agree with all the comments, you instruct so well. I thought of so many stamps I’d like to make masks from. Now if only I can find Mylar in Canada. And where do you get the sponges with handles?
Hi Carolyn, Thanks for your comment. You probably have your own Amazon site in Canada. Here is the link to the sponges I use. • Ink Blending Tool/Sponges: amzn.to/2UxpXap
What a great tip Kim , thanks I need to get me a thick blade , now ..... stop lol♥️♥️♥️
Thanks Frances. Actually, you can create the stamping mask out of card stock too. If you do get the deep blade, you also need the holder for it. They are not too expensive. I have links to them in my video description. It is fun to accessorize.
Great tutorial. I just bought the SnC. I have a Pazzles Vue and I love it but was ready for a different machine. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Belinda, I also love my Cricut but it just can’t do what the ScanNCut can.
Great looking card and thank you for the tips on making the stencil.....great video
Thanks Terri, I like to make Mother's Day cards for my Mom, Sisters, Sister-in-Laws and friends too.
Love this technique! Thank you!
Thanks Patricia. Glad you like this technique. It is worth the extra work to be able to have masks so that you can mass produce cards and projects.
More great ideas from our great leader. There’s never a time where they have any extra of the previous months kits are there. I’d love to find an April kit. I subscribed but my subscription will start in May.
Thanks Pat! Subscribers like us are allowed to order the refill kits. I was bummed because when I went online to order refills, they were gone in less than a day. I will send you a couple of completed cards because tomorrow, I’m using this kit in a workshop. I made so much with my kit already and will try to post a video of those projects too. I’m glad you’re getting the May kit because it will probably sell out quickly too.
I just got the dx125 and LOVE it..i warch your vids alk the time : ) They are terrific. My ques is that the auto thickness is a 3 mil max, and i cant find stencil sheets less than 7 mil thick. Is there a way to use the stencil sheets that are thicker than the max??? Thx so much for these videos, ive learned a ton!!!
Hi Karen, in this video, I showed how to use the Deep Cut Blade and I shared the Mylar I used. You can probably go even thicker. Try it. ua-cam.com/video/0ZgDeCnnCgA/v-deo.html
Love this, off topic I can’t wait till you use some of the new dsp in the 2019 catalogue, especially the humming bird, I see so many people fussy cutting, I’m not able to do it well because I have bad hands. So I’m hoping the humming bird can be ScanNcut Thank you for all your tips and tricks, love your videos, you explain everything to help us, very appreciated Thank you xx💚❤️
Oh yes, the hummingbird. It is on a mosaic looking background but I'm up for the challenge. I know. I would not even think of fussy cutting when I can cut it with the ScanNCut. Even if it takes a pencil outline, it is still worth it if you don't have a die.
Papered Chef would love to see this one please 😁❤️
@@lynnmartin7123 OK, the new dsp has been shipped to me. I didn't do just one Pre-Order, I did two because in the first, I forgot to order catalogs. LOL.
I really like watching your tutorials, they teach me a lot. I do have a questions though, after scanning the outline and saving to your machine is there a way to also save ( on the same page of memory) a 2nd and 3rd duplicate but with a boarder allowance that you could use to cut out the stamped image?
Mira, Thanks for your comment. Scan to Cut Data doesn’t allow you to add an outline distance. To do that, use Direct Cut. I have many tutorials on cutting out stamped images too where I show how to add an outline distance using Direct Cut. Another way to do it is through Brother Canvas Workspace.
Can you do a test cut ? Thank you great video as always. Ok here is a dumb question but when you buy the deep cut blade do you need the holder or will that blade fit into the standard blade holder?
It is not a dumb question at all. I was kind of mad when I found out that the deep cut blade holder doesn't actually come with the deep cut blade. You need both. You can't use the deep cut blade in the standard holder. I linked to them both in the description. I will show how to do a test cut.
Papered Chef thanks so much just ordered both Do you need a deep cut blade for vinyl also? Sorry for all the questions don’t mean to bother you
@@norinemueller4588 Not for vinyl. Here is my latest vinyl tutorial. ua-cam.com/video/WiOt97_-zpk/v-deo.html
I found Mylar on Canadian Amazon, it says can be used with cricket and silhouette machines, can that be used with the Brother SDX as well?
In my opinion, Mylar is Mylar. Go for it! Your Auto Blade should cut it just fine.
Papered Chef thanks , I watched the one made with Cardstock too so that’s 2 options. Thnx to you, I’m loving my SDX! I told Brother that but for you the machine was going back.
Carolyn Manning Great! My new machine is performing much better now. I like it.
I love your tutorials so much. I bought a scan n cut and I really needed some lessons. Thank you so much for doing these. I love learning from you. I do have a question. I signed up for the Paper Pumpkin kits now but I was wondering if there is a way to get this Sentimental Rose stamp. Can this be purchased by it's self now that the kits are out?
Hi Debbie, Thanks for your comment. In the past, Stampin' Up! used to have a lot of leftover kits. I stocked up (hoarded) kits and refills. Lately, as soon as they make past kits and/or refills available to subscribers, they are sold out in one day. That is why I order two kits. I give the extra stamps to a new team member and keep the refills for my workshops. At my next workshop, we are making Mother's Day cars so this kit was perfect. The May kit also has a nature theme so I can't wait to see it.
where do you get the mylar sheets
I get them from Amazon. Here are my exact ones. I also always include my supplies in the description. Mylar Stencil Sheets - amzn.to/2GExvTI
Where did you get the deep blade?
Will they have that stamp from the April set available for sale?
Hi Pat, Paper Pumpkin subscribers can buy past kits and refills but they ran out of refills in just one day. They are no longer available. Sorry.
Oh lots of info ! Saved with others🙏🏼🙏🏼👍👍😍😘🇬🇧👵🏼🤣👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣🤣🤣🤣
Thanks Chrissy! I can tell you liked it and I hope you give this technique a try.
