I just happened to stumble across this camera as a suggestion after being so determined to one day buy a a7rii and watching the snow fall with those gorgeous red cardinals made me start crying. I don't cry easily and I'm shocked that the beauty of this made me cry the way it did. Suffice to say, I think you just converted this customer. Just . . .WOW! I can't wait to see more tests of low light conditions. Thank you!
The image quality is amazing. It's a real joy to look at. I would be great to see a comparison with the older fp to see if it's worth spending the extra for the newer version.
Can I echo a test please on the low light capabilities. The original fp is fantastic. I’m concerned the new fp-L may not be quite as good. Great review. Thanks.
Regular CMOS sensors are getting closer to Velvia and Foveon X3, but not there yet ;) The colours from the fp L are beautiful. Sigma cameras are quirky, but people forget that the first high quality small, pocketable, APS-C size camera was the Sigma Dp1, which was a Foveon.
Sigma's Foveon sensors look and behave organically sort of like film. I don't think Bayer is anywhere near it. CCD Bayer looks a bit more like Foveon. Imo, CMOS is bottom of the barrel...we've just invested so many billions of dollars (probably trillions) into the technology across all manufacturers, private and military etc, over so many years. Put a few dollars of pocket change into Foveon and it's ahead of trillions of dollars into Bayer.
@@jon4715 Past 100 ISO it turns to garbage. The red channel has also been a problem because of the loss of light reaching the bottom layer. Acting like Foveon is just a Bayer sensor with better colors is foolish. I'd like to have a Quattro H as a second camera but it just makes no sense as a primary if you're doing moving subjects and available light. Isn't sunny? Use a tripod. Can't use a tripod? Oh well, wrong camera.
@@suresh0t478 The quattro sensor gets clean results up to 400 iso, and usable results up to 1000-1600 iso. Merrill sensors get clean, usable black and white (blue layer iso) up to 1000+ iso. And you can't compare Foveon to Bayer. They're not remotely similar. I really dislike Bayer. It's a transition technology, and inherently flawed.
Would like a deeper dive on the low light performance. Usually high MP cameras are not low light champs. Nice to see Sigma going down its path with its bodies. 👍

"L" for "Loadsofmegapixels" :-) Looks like an interesting, cheaper alternative to the Leica M10-R. And yeah, those colours really do look like the old foveon sensors. Sigma is doing a great job these days! The auto focus will probably improve a lot with firmware updates. I hope this means phase detect is coming for Panasonic and Leica too. That would be great.
FYI - It kept you in focus when you got in close, and did so quite well. Just another FYI - thie Panasonic AG-DVX 200 (more of an ENG camara by design,) dose Macro focus quite well also.
The lack of mechanical shutter is serious for photography. Also the sensor without doubt is the same sensor of the Sony a7R III. Sony is well know to sell its sensor to Nikon, Fujifilm (medium format), Apple, etc.
Very interested in this camera. Price seems a bit high compared to competition. Would have liked a fully articulating screen for low angle shooting. Not sure if there are any lightweight high quality zoom lenses available (I'm not really a primes shooter). Would negate the size advantage with a huge zoom on the front. $700 for that viewfinder is outrageous!
Is the image IS available in RAW? That was one of my biggest disappointments with the original. I'm also bummed I just bought the first gen EVF-11, this one seems much more practical for achieving lower angle shots. Thanks for the excellent review.
I'm assuming since he has the EVF-11 attached (which utilizes USB-C), he's either shooting 10-bit FHD or .mov...One of the the big questions I have is whether you can pass-through USB-C with the EVF, in order to allow recording to an SSD while using the EVF.
does it have the same size sensor stack as the FP? I bought a VM Heliar 50mm to use on my S5 and the results are nice but not great, and I've seen files from someone using the same lens on a regular FP that are amazing.

In my opinion, yes. I've used my fp with a lot of vintage lenses and I really like the colors I get straight out of the camera. I do much less work on my photos than when using my previous Canon DSLRs. I think some people will prefer the colors from different cameras, but if you shoot raw photos you can mostly get them all to look pretty similar.
Sigma L mount, but you can get adapters for a lot of things, you can use Sigma lenses, you can get a Canon adapter from Sigma, then a lot of different lens adapters for manual vintage lenses from Nikon, Pentax, M39, M42, and many others.

Having 26 Mpix on full frame is better than having 61 Mpix on the same sensor size especially in low light conditions that's why I went for the FP.

i have 2 Foveons I use almost exclusively for b&w, sometimes IR on the SD.

綺麗な奥さんですね。それと森に囲まれた自宅も。カメラのコンセプトは素晴らしく良いと感じています。特にイメージセンサー。これを使用した天体写真用のセンサーは、すでに天文コミュニティの中ではゲームチェンジャーとして良く知られているので、悪かろうはずは無いです。天文用のものは私も使っていますが、とにかく実際のダイナミックレンジが広大で、歴代CMOSセンサーではNo.1じゃないかと思います。半面RAWのデータ量が多く、中途半端なPCでは転送できないことさえあります。シグマは、このイメージセンサーの素の性能をそのまま生かしたというところがソニーとニコンと異なります。余計なノイズ低減などのギミック処理をしていないので、データのリニアリティが保持されていて評価できます。願わくは、ASCOMドライバーを搭載しPCから遠隔でコントロールできる機能の追加ですね。最近のシグマレンズはどれも超高性能ですが、ビンテージのライカレンズも生かすことが出来るので、そういう静かな写真にも最適ではないかと考えています。カメラが余計な事をしないので。

Continuous focus is not acceptable yet. Useless if if cannot track the face in focus all the time.

It should be about the same as the A7RIV. Noise free until 6400 and usable to 25600.
As right eye shooter this looks like it would be akward to use.....
