    I am amazed at the self-drafting of patterns. That is something that I am terrified to do and can't seem to figure it out at all. The corset is wonderful, first attempt or not, and the cover is very very nice as well.

      @BellaMaesDesigns  4 роки тому +9

      Aw, thank you! I'm definitely better at drafting close fitting, structured things...but when it comes to added ease and making "regular" fitting things....thats where I get in trouble (thus the to tight of corset cover!)

    A corset cover is also to protect the outer garments from the possible chafing of the corset.

      I have had my clothing wear through the fabric in the corset before. A corset cover would have stopped that from happening. Too bad that I did not know about that idea back then

      That's how I learned back in college; fabric was still pretty expensive so whatever they could do to preserve the clothes as long as possible they would.

      I also *believe* they were the precursor to the late edwardian brassiere, which was actually initially worn *With* a corset and not as a stand-alone bra, to help larger busted women hold in the - let's say 'spillage' - over the top edge of the corset.
      If someone knows more on this and I have misunderstood, please correct me :)

    As someone who is unreasonably devoted to pairs of bodies/stays (it's possible my final form is just a cone) the idea of just drafting a Victorian corset is wild. All those curves, all that math. But you killed it - it looks so good!

    Watching you create a top notch self drafted corset is like watching Olympic divers. It looks really cool, but deep down I know that if I attempted the same thing, I would bellyflop and end up in world of pain.
    I think I picked up the same style of thimble on a whim a while back, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I am glad it works.

    • @BellaMaesDesigns

      Don't be too intimidated...I don't film a lot of the "aargh-ing" and such! :)
      Yes, the green thimble is definitely my favorite to use this far...and I really don't like having to use a thimble!

    I'm guessing the corset with an outer covering can be worn with similar coloured day dresses too, quite ingenius too when you think of it, much like todays matching bras to blouses or shirts especially if the material is of a sheer quality

    Wow that all turned out beautifully!! Don’t be so hard on yourself no matter what you make or how many you make you will always see something you would like to improve it’s a maker’s curse. We tend to lean towards perfectionism. The world looks at the overall garments we look at our mistakes. No matter how you see the little mistakes they are not highlighted in neon with arrows and signs screaming look at this stitch!!! Millions of lovely stitches but you look at the one that isn’t right. And yes I repeat this to myself not as much as I used to but it still pops up now and then.

      Robin, I used to be a crazy perfectionist. Roughly 20 years ago I learned that some Native American tribes believe that perfection in made goods is bad luck. Nature is imperfect, therefore it goes against nature. To avoid “cursing” whatever object they were working on, they’d intentionally make a mistake. I loved that idea, so from then on I quit worrying about little mistakes like a stitch out of place.

    I love all the little details, the holes in the bones for flossing, the flossing itself, your choice for making a scalloped edge with lace, and not forgetting the beautiful ribbon for the corset cover. Oh and the silk taffeta corset, beautiful! I'm so glad you didn't have to resort to my emergency thimble *whispers* masking tape, it would probably catch on silk anyway.

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  4 роки тому +2

      Aw, thanks! ❤️ Oh dear! I never thought of that....if I didn't have a thimble, I probably would have gone without one....because I do most my sewing without one and I just don't like using one! 😂

    • @eleanorbirchellhughes
      @eleanorbirchellhughes 4 роки тому +1

      Thimbles are tricky, it took me years to get used to using one and many tryouts of different sorts. I persevered because I got fed up with getting the blunt end of the needle stuck in my finger when quilting or hand embroidery - it really hurts! I have to confess being a newbie youtuber that I can't actually juggle with a thimble whilst filming, you make it look so easy!

  • @TheMetatronGirl
    @TheMetatronGirl 4 роки тому +15

    Your corset is gorgeous! You have a gift for design. The lines are so unique and elegant, and the waist tapes look amazing. If I were wearing it, I’d like the back panels closer to my spine, but good gracious! You did two mock-ups! Two! I’m dead impressed. I loved the lace accents and red ribbon for your corset cover, too.
    Realizing how much time you spent on the corset, if you were to make the corrections you mentioned, I have no doubt the pattern would sell very well. Love, light and blessings to you and yours.

    Your problem solving skills and creative additions and self-created tips and tricks are all inspiring! It helps to show that sewing, while technical, isn't set in stone and can be adapted to suit different needs or just be improved for new situations. Historical sewing has incredible methods, but I think our ancestors would hate to think that no one ever brought new things to the table because we limited ourselves to only copying!

    A COMPLETE INDUSTRIAL PROCESS.... I am an aircraft structural technician for 21 years: and I can relate to your process of design of the pattern; cutting the material: assembly and then inspect. Anyway the second draft “on my personal opinion” it is the look that I will to see a girl walking in to a club with a nice pair of jeans or trousers or an stiletto skirt and a great pair of high heels and BE HIGH LIGHT OF THE PARTY. I want to see crossing the fence and explore that new way of wearing a corset GREAT JOB; GREAT JOB

    Hey Bella, Just for any future Corset making, If you are having external boning channels that cover your seams sew your seam from the right side of the fabric so your seam allowance is visible. Then, after ironing the seam open and flat, trim the seam allowance back to a quarter or eighth of an inch and sew your boning casing over-top. It will encase your seam allowance and reduce bulk. bonus less sewing as well.

    I do love that corset and the cover! Your flossing really took the project to the next level, it is always that attention to detail that pushes a project from good to great. I do wonder if 3 or 4 rows of micro ruffles on the bust of the corset cover would disguise the hard line of the corset beneath better. In fashion plates you rarely see that hard line. I’m not sure what the most flattering way of disguising it would be.

      The corset sits over a rounded form instead of a flat form. The outer layer has to be a bit larger to accommodate the thickness added by the inner layer.

      So it's just as "Pi for breakfast" explained... since the corset (and most other garments) are wrapping around you body, the out layer of fabric needed to be just a bit larger than the under layer (If you know about circumference, this can help...you just need a bit more room in that outer layer!)
      Also, it depends on how the seams are folded as well...if a seam is directly onto it's self, the outer layer of fabric need more room to wrap around that fold than the inner layer.
      Hope that helps!

    Glad I found your video. I am a brand new subscriber to your channel. I look forward to more videos and inspiration. I have been reading a lot because I want to start drafting my own patterns for me, I have issues finding fast fashion so I know it would be costly to have someone else make my costumes. I have been sewing for years but never self drafted. It is less difficult than I thought. Once you see how it is down and actually learn to draft, even a little, it makes it a little less scary. Thank you.

    Corsets are much more comfortable than underwire bras. 🎭🩰🎨

    Given the labor, time and the fact that Victorian dress maker's would not have had the same tools and implements we have today how, long would you guesstimate it might have taken a 19th century dressmaker to actually make a corset? How many corsets on average do you think the average person might have owned at, any one time? Would they have been custom-made for each individual or were there general 'sizes' that everyone chose from?
    Now contrast that to dressmaker's or seamstress' of today how long does it take to make a corset?
    Wonderfully informative video. Thank you for sharing.

      Honestly, I have no guesstimation! If they had access to a sewing machine (which started becoming more available in the victorian era) I would guess not a huge difference in make time...but that's just a guess!
      I made my corset in about 50 hours!
