2021 Smart EQ ForFour Electric Review | Cheap, Cute, Flexible...But Is The Battery Big Enough?

  • Smart is an electric-only brand now, which means the Smart EQ Forfour is the cheapest four-seat electric car on sale today. Problem is, its teensy body doesn't really fit much battery into it, so its range isn't the best. Still, if you can live with that there's lots to like. Mark takes you through it...

I get over 100 miles from mine in evo mode.four or five days motoring. 1.2 pence per mile May 2022.

I think its def niche and not for everyone, but with a daily drive of 15 miles it works for us as a family second car.
People still get hung up on range and you really have to question do you really need it 95% of the time? If we all got cars for what we potentially could need we would be knocking about in minibuses - My solution when we used to run the first gen Zoe and needed to go a few hundred miles up the road was just hire a octavia couldn't be arsed with the risk of charge roulette.
Also you have to remember is for every negative is a positive, which for me it that it hasn't got the range to take us to the inlaws :)
Planning to get the Enyaq as the new family car, so Mark if you could get your hands on one and do a review :)

Just thought Id do an update as its been nearly 2 years into our lease - which at £130 a month is less than it cost to fuel the petrol one we had so pretty much free motoring.
Mark covered it in the review but the biggest thing I noticed is the improvement over the petrol car its now makes you smile with that initial pull + the added bonus of it now doesn't try and cook the dog (engine was in the boot)
More than happy with it as we run it as a second car with the Enyaq as the main driver for longer trips - When I drive it I run it like I used to run the IQ with the back seats down all the time - So its like a for two estate :)
No issues to mention only downer was ours came out just before they included apple car play, and I now wish Id paid the little extra for the exclusive but range has never been an issue and its good for 3-4 days between charge in summer.
Oh and yeah I can confirm with tip runs it can take a fair bit of stuff.
One year left on the lease and now trying to work out what to do next, this again but purchase as last of the range as its not longer made or go 500 as VW is on and off with eUP and Spring hasn't sprung over the channel yet (basically the only cars < 4 meters....

A very fair review. For what it's worth, I have had one on order since the beginning of September and not expecting to see it until the end of Feb at the earliest - 6 months wait! It will replace our petrol fortwo auto. The car in the test is not the 2021 model because it has the old media system. It's worth waiting for the spec in the brochure as there are other upgrades, like the winter pack.
So, IF, and it's a very big IF, you can cope with the range this is the best electric city car for the money. It is MUCH better equipped than the VW Up and variants (their safety kit is dreadful and no media system at all!) Also you can get very good discounts on the Smart, plus a free home charger. Hence the low lease cost.
Ours will be a local runabout car for which it is perfect. You never get tired of doing u turns in narrow roads and it is so easy to drive round town. Our current Smart is really my wife's but I grab it every time she will let me or is not looking! The EQ version is even better than the petrol as a city car for the reasons mentioned in the review.
I struggle to see how this could be an only car for many people so it really is a niche product. Within its Niche it's brilliant

I have test driven the model you mean (the one with the old entertainment screen). I spent a day with it, it’s fun to drive, the range is fine for the intended purpose, and I found it got better than expected range. The small battery also means it’s charged in no time at places like Ecotricity. Genuinely a fun car and actually if they could find a way to increase range by around 20 miles I can’t imagine needing my other car except for going to see friends across the country. It’s too easily written off as a car IMO.

Go for the Mii Electric! Similar size outside but pretty much the double the range

I drive a forfour EQ and its a great little car for city driving. Unlike the reviewer I can get 5 standard shopping bags in the boot, 6 if I squeeze them a bit. The range is not really a problem and I recon around 80 plus miles in the Summer and at this chilly time of year I am getting 66 miles as long as I don't use the heating, which drops the range to about 55 miles, but it's got heated steering wheel and drivers seat (unlucky passengers). The one thing that irritates me, Renault put a bigger battery in their, I think its a 30kw, so why couldn't Mercedes order the smart with the same battery or at least offer it as an optional extra. As a 77 year old pensioner, I love the Smart, but I want more RANGE.

We had the internal combustion Smart ForFour for a while. Agree with all your comments: surprisingly practical and good to drive around town; always felt fun and quirky to drive; terrible infotainment; out of its depth on a motorway.
From what you say in your review, this car would ideal for a city runabout (at a good price), as long as the person buying it accepts it is useless once you get past the nearest suburb.

I have the 0.9T ForFour & I have zero complaints with its motorway performance 😳 I've never driven the 1.0 non turbo version - maybe that's what people are complaining about ??

On the subject of city cars, how come on Vanarama the cost of leasing a Toyota Aygo is over £400 per month? Does it just depend on the deal you guys get? Or is it priced like that so nobody would realistically lease it from yers?

Cute, but I can't see people opting for one of these over the VAG trio, clever touches or not, if range is an issue. I'd put up with the tops of the doors being painted metal and having to use my phone as a touchscreen if I needed a small EV and it meant getting double the range, though to be fair to the ForFour, it does look to be a classier, safer and more practical car, and they seem to be heavily discounted at the moment.

Standard home charger is 7kw so it’s more like 2 and a bit hrs to 80%
The time you mentioned is 3pin charging time which I only do when I’m at my mams.

There are some poor reviewers on YT ( cough Carwow ) who attempt the humour and entertainment Mark beats hands down in the first few seconds . We really need to champion this to get the Subs up with a national campaign.

China already makes lots of very cheap ( about £5K) small city electric cars, but they are not sold in the West for some reason. Myself, I don't think £19K is particularly cheap for a small car, even if it is electric.

50-odd mile range?! Wow. I'm not one to believe that every electric car has to be able to do a minimum of 300 miles but when it's got a range of half the already limited Honda E then that's going to seriously restrict its practicality

    • @donofarrel

@@stephengaskell8401 Station and back - 2.5 miles. Tescos and back 4 miles. That's once a week for both. So say 28 miles per month. Recharge probably once every 2 months or if you're cautious like me, once every six weeks. This is not for long journeys. This is a runaround locally. But I can still do the City and back in 30 miles but that would only be once a month, probably less. Perfect short hop car and a delight to drive.

Great review. Looks like a cr@p car though. You can HEAR the wind noise in the video , and I'm pretty sure you're doing less than 50mph..

    • @ak5659
      @ak5659 3 роки тому

Fair point, but if engine and road noise are minimal wind noise subjectively seems much louder. I'm on my second Nissan Cube and the wind noise seems very loud because drive train & road noise are almost non-existent.

So, the top-of-the-range Tesla S, has a max. range of 230 miles, then, charging at home, takes 15 hours! Add this piece of crap and drive at around 20 mph, and you may get 40 miles range! If people genuinely think, that battery-electric is the future, then dream on!
What will happen with a 40/50 ton truck I wonder......... Range around 3/4 mile, charging time, about 20 hours! Yep, that's the future! Oh, forgot, what about a locomotive, pulling an 8000 ton train, or, a 250,00 ton ship, all makes sense right? Not forgetting, the build of any of these vehicles, exhausts about twice the carbon, the vehicle will ever recover in it's useful life (about 8 years tops!)
There can only be two types of motive power, a nuclear powered engine, or, a Hydrogen (non-electric) engine! Neither needs a battery, sadly, nobody even talks about the obvious! Electric motive power, allied to a battery = Pie-in-the-sky!
