Maggie idk you, but as a Black man who grew up watching BET, I REALLY appreciate the respect and candor you showed to Ms. Johnson. The fact that you created a safe, knowledgeable, and respectful space for a Black female billionaire to express her challenges and acumen is really top-notch professionalism and skill. You both ate this interview, and I could tell Ms. Johnson really respected your conversation and interviewing skills here. Great representation of TWO powerful and skilled women here. Kudos to you both.
I think the therapy after leaving the unhealthy relationship is huge. I think people don’t value inner healing work as they should. Healing is paramount for success and peace of mind.
Sheila Johnson was my music teacher at Sidwell Friends back in the day. She is extraordinary! A light and a joy with mulriple giftings and genuine concern for people.
Her growth keys were her values, her support system, and her patience. I’m buying the book. She inspired me to start my own teen talk show back in 2008. It lasted for a few years but was rewarding
I’m in my 60’s and starting a business, divorced from a toxic relationship. Of course no where near her financial status…but need to do something to rebuild at this point in my life ..this woman is such an inspiration.
"Kick the Truth to the young Black youth." TEEN SUMMIT. ..yaaay. I learnt how, in the future, the internet could be used to make college applications. ...a few years later, I did just that. Thank you TEEN Summit.

Listen to or read her autobiography called "walk through Fire", its a fantastic memoir, much respect & kudos to Sheila Johnson, she has lived an incredible life..🙌🙌🙌
I'm so grateful to hear her mention the importance of therapy and how a toxic/ abusive relationship can strip you from knowing who YOU are and how GREATNESS EXISTS in you already. Healing from such a tumultuous event or series of events is pivotal. So is leaning into God to find your true self again. I was so impressed and inspired from hearing of her 3rd chapter. Now inspired to purchase her book.
this is big specially for a lot of women I believe. The moment I realized how bad relationships/friendships essentially led to a period of draining in every area of my life, I became extremely alert and treated it as an area to defend aggressively.
Excellent interview, very well done Maggie McGrath for your cadence and allowing Sheila Johnson the space to respond in such an eloquent manner! My takeaways from this interview, be thorough, venture out, curate your team wisely, network and slow and steady wins the race!
Mrs. Johnson inspires us to be a better human being. 😊She doesn’t just talk the talk she walks the walk. I highly recommend checking out her NOPSI Hotel in New Orleans. It’s absolutely gorgeous and by all means, see her painting on the wall in the lobby. You probably can still view her talk at the NOLA Book Festival on UA-cam. Value added.❤
I would Love to see her Art Collection. As an Artist myself for the past 7yrs after a Stroke, have a passion for sharing my Art in Hotels someday soon. Thanks for sharing.
Therapy 💯. I was in a very mentally abusive relationship, and small amounts of physical abuse. You have to heal and empower from within to empower and motivate outside of yourself.
I’m 39 and this video hits so hard! Not only is her resume impressive, but she’s able to effortlessly weave in how her personal experience really helped shape her in this time of her life. It is never too late to do what you dream of, don’t let anyone tell you no just because of who you are, and surround yourself with intelligent people while also trusting yourself! Ugh so grateful for this interview ❤❤
My name is Shelia Johnson as well. I’m too an entrepreneur a Woman of many hats. I truly appreciate this message, it’s encouraging, inspiring , and informative 🙌🏾❤️🙌🏾Thank You Sheila Johnson for sharing your insights , vulnerability and transparency. God bless you
Baby..... it almost brings me to tears. Like sis REALLY ate that homework up. Like the fact that you can tell she really did her research and made an effort to name Ms. Johnsons personal challenges and incredible feats explicitly as a Black Woman was incredible! We love a skilled professional round here!
What an inspirational woman! And I love how she talked so openly about having been in an abusive relationship whether that be professional or personal. I can SO relate to that (but not yet the Billions!) and it has inspired me to build a stronger, financially independent and more powerful (and peaceful) life, post-abuse
Ms Sheila Johnson you are a smart and wonderful person. I can identify with you. Your words are very impressive and inspirational. I am in my 50 yrs. You give me hope.
A lot was said with only "black woman" attached... most of that stuff should have "only woman" or "one of few women" attached instead! She's achieving things that not many women as a whole and even some men haven't achieved, regardless of race. Her level of excellence and success is high in several comparative categories.
It's important to mention her race here, because she's the only black woman who's accomplished was she's done. There are other woman billionaires in other spaces, but she's the only black woman billionaire thus far in the sports & hospitality arena. It's not being racist, it's more of a tipping of the hat.
@@vv-ec1nh Yes, she is. Like I mentioned previously, there are other black women billionaires in other arenas, however she's the first to own 3 different sports franchises, in addition to her ownership of various hotels and golf resorts.
On the edge of my seat the entire interview! Phenomenal, wise, and heart driven! From your partners to your attorney. Ex husband too.... WOW! Ms. Johnson, thank you for being authentic and transparent enough to share your story here for all of us. Love! I am more inspired than ever to ensure our firm is in the corporations I know we will serve effectively and passionately!
Inspiring to say the least! Thank you for choosing YOUR brilliance and self love in the midst of pain. “Teen Summit” 🙏🏾 I truly appreciate this conversation… the journey. 🌹 Women are truly PowerHERful.
Thanks for that wonderful inspiring interview. I applaud you both. So happy for the information that she shared. God continue to bless the two of you!♥
Shelia, you are amazing inspiring black woman. I didn’t know anything about you. Until I watched you on Forbes today. Brilliantly pushed the boundaries in every field of her own passion and interest. With such a wealth of balanced knowledge and insight - you just want to listen to her and learn from her ❤ Truly Wonderful- Keep Sowing the Seeds of Inspiration 🎉
I loved this interview and more so I am so happy to find out that she is the person behind the show Teen Summit. I watched that show on BET growing up and I still carry some of the things I learned from that. I learned politics from watching that because of them bringing Hilary Clinton on that show. WOW!! I aspire to be like Mrs. Sheila Johnson she is fierce and confident.
Wow this woman is a Unicorn!! So smart, elegant, beautiful, and poised! Truly an inspiration to all women! 💕🙏🏼 Thank you for this interview! If not for this I would have not known who she was and all she has accomplished! 🥂
For the sake of journalistic integrity, the incomparable SJ is not a new billionaire. This woman has been wealthy and wise for decades... ever since BET was sold to another company. She's an inspiration to this generation!
First I would like to congratulate you Mrs. Johnson! Your video kept coming up on my feed, and I was immediately drawn to your video. I’d hope to meet you one day, and I’d hope that you would be able to possible mentor/coach me on my way into entrepreneurship. I pray for many blessings for you and those who interviewed you, and thank you for allowing us all to glean from advice, your authenticity, and your humble beginnings. And God bless everyone on the line here! 🙏💜
I absolutely loved her content contributions to BET!! I was an avid subscriber to team Summit. I learned so much about various topics that were affecting my age group in the 90s and early 2000s. I noticed an ongoing trend with recommendations for therapy, after you’ve been abused, whether it’s in a relationship or in a work environment. I am also proud Bohemian woman, who draws strength from my ancestors and the Haitian revolution. The Haitian revolution told me to fight back against intimidation in the source of fear. In 2024, fighting back is remaining strong and understanding that there are outside forces trying to break me down, for the sole purpose of control. if you keep your faith first and head of all situations, you can avoid mental damage that requires therapy. I know everyone can’t take my approach. this is what makes me a leader, because I’m able to maintain with my own devices. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Last May, my family stayed at Sheila's Salamander Hotel in Washington DC. We were very happy with the service received during our stay. I am halfway through her book and plan to finish it by tomorrow. I just happened upon her hotel properties a year ago and was blown away by what she has been able to achieve. Now, having read only half the book, I am so proud of her ability to rise above the kind of verbal and mental abuse that would have suffocated most women. Yet she breathes! Such an inspiring woman.
I was saying the same... Her divorce may have cut into it but I believe she was a billionaire (for the 1st time) after the sale of BET. She's definitely been a top notch and wealthy executive for quite some time.
I applaud a woman who is not afraid to venture into spaces we normally don’t occupy. Her advice definitely resonates.
Trust your instincts
I agree with you.
We were never "afraid" just not allowed.

Her approach of hiring slowly and valuing financial literacy provides a solid foundation for anyone looking to build a resilient business. 👩💼

I went to a top 20 % private all-girl high school in NOLA and they told us that the most important decisions are made on the golf course.
Thanks for that info
