WONDERFUL VIDEO on the TRUTH about TOOS. I have a few of these loved ones to. They are fun and act like little nut jobs but it all happens so fast just like yous aid Jamie.
Could be the HAT he is wearing. It's interesting to TOOS and some of them not only get heightened but eventually get mad and mean and down right bite. I know a couple of them that love hats but then go right to biting cuz it makes them super heightened.
We did the same thing Zupreem colored diet was what ours were on when we bought them then we changed to the natural Zupreem and then to your pellets. It was slow going at first but eventually they did take it with the help of your birdy muffins you showed us how to make. THANK YOU BIG time for that.
SWEET! You got the 2nd video here. Thank you! You had me laughing so hard Jamie with that face you made in the end when Dave asked you... LOL

What gives me hope is how friendly he is! He’s such a sweet little bird and his diet is majorly contributing to his hyperactivity. I personally think that taking his mom out of the picture and changing his whole environment for a while will also help him accept the change in food. I think a lot of it is psychological. These birds are so smart!!!

I think she is waaaay to hung up on food as a reward right at this point. (personal issues? Or just pushing sales?)
(b.t.w.I absolutely despise zupreme, way too high sugarpercentage: my rescue macaw was on nothing else: her feathers were a brittle mess. They were rock hard and disintegrated in needle sharp fragments the moment some stress was applied on them. My vet assumed those pellets were some kind of low-grade human breakfast cereal, not propper birdfood and was shocked!)
If your bird is willing to steal *your* food (or even taste it) there is an opportunity to get them to try and eat new things.
(and almost all birds will ;) )
I got lucky that my 'completely unwilling to try anything' african grey got competitive with the other one: so if one of them flatly refuses one type of food, but the other is binging on it... that is half the battle won already. They will try it sooner or later.
(Ditto if you happen to be 'the other bird.')
Anyway... if food is not interesting, find out what is... usually it is interaction (not just scritches) or just let them chill out.
Right now, nobody relaxed around this bird, so he got hyped up along with them.
So maybe what he needs is "chilllllled human!" to help him 'get down from being hyped up'.
My macaw also got bitey/defensive/offensive when she gets overexcited (and she never learned how to play, so that was also very scary for her), but then she got an empty plastic bottle to throw around and shake as a stress-relief-item.
The moment she learned she could 'safely blow off some steam' she lost a lot of 'going into the red' behaviour.
Now we play together (and yes throwing that bottle around got from redirected aggression, to fun, to funtime with the human as well, and we no longer need the bottle as a go between, fingers are safe and she learned to relax all by herself after getting a bit tense.)
She normally trains fine with just a few pine-nuts as a reward, but if I ask her to really stretch boundaries, and she gets tense again....back to the bottle! (She ignores its existence for weeks, but she will start looking for it when she gets uncomfortable.)
She just had to find the safety valve to grow into a confident bird.**
Now she controls the way to get rid of the 'not nice feeling' ... she is a sweetheart, lots of trust.
I am not a professional trainer, and she was/is my first macaw (I am a CAG-person), so it probably took me a lot longer to figure out what made her tick ;)
**Her wings got ruined somewhere in her past, so she cannot fly away to escape scary/ nasty situations. That also is a source of stress to a prey-animal. She would just incidentally lose her balance and crash to the floor (no wing or tail to help balance her or catch her fall). Never take away a bird's option to fly! (It is one of the things I love about this channel.)

Honestly my cockatoo hates any woman but me and my mom (who she rarely sees). She gets excitable and i end up having to cave her and cover her then put soft classical music on. Now she rarely gets that way with me and when she escalates now, I hag her and talk quietly and she mellows out. But she’s a rare one. And Blizz is HUGE!!

I love cockatoos.. On UA-cam 😂 I think they are awesome and entertaining, at someone else's house. When I was deciding on a new bird (have always had small / med birds and wanted a larger one) I researched and then Googled cockatoo screaming and macaw screaming because worst case scenario should be taken into account. I listened at full volume and decided that I was right to get a macaw. Well so far she isn't a screamer but the sound an unhappy macaw makes vs an unhappy cockatoo is way different. Of course everyone is different and I have huge respect anyone who owns one.

Lol I have ADHD (Dx’d as an adult but has been suspected as a child) and I’ve always been a cockatoo person. Husband calls me the Moluccan whisperer because everytime we’ve met one and been told “… doesn’t like women/people, never been friendly…” the come right over and I can typically calm them down too. I always laugh watching all my Bird Tricks videos when Jamie gets nervous about them because that’s exactly how I feel with Macaws… but cockatoos have always been my “spirit animal.” Of course I was a hard core attention whore as a kid/teen/young adult so 🤷🏻‍♀️🥴

I was shocked at how much diet change affected our rescue macaw. He was 7yrs old. Only had zupreem fruity pebbles and sunflower seeds. I have him on Roudybush and fresh mash. ( 50% mash/50% roudybush ) He switched over in a period of 6 months, his colors improved as well as his attitude. Although I think the attitude had a lot to do with being handled and happy as he was very ignored before. He is 13 now and doing amazing.

I'm really curious, if and how his diet will be changed in the future. I would love to see him as one of your project birds and get regular updates on his health. And it's really refreshing to see a cockatoo that hasn't ripped out all of his breast feathers, so he seems to be mentally "stable" and happy.

Having worked and owned a variety of smaller birds, I now have Bobo my Umbrella Cockatoo given to me from a parrot charity. As no one knew his history, age etc and being the largest bird I’ve ever had I was going into the unknown. I’ve learned a great deal now about him and his species. Yes, they are easily excited and I’ve found the best way to calm Bo down is to be calm, less talking to him and only low quiet words. Remove the toy or whatever is exciting him. In the case of your video with Blizzard it may be all the people around and particularly if he senses anxiety with someone. Think of a two year old child with a knife, all these emotions and not knowing how to properly keep them in check. The times Bo has bitten: When I had a Fitbit watch on and he must have thought it was a snake, so he was protecting me - when his hormones were raging and I wouldn’t let him masturbate on me holding him , he flew at me and attacked - when I’m playing with him with his toys and he gets way too wound up - when I’ve introduced a new toy just before bedtime ( huge mistake ! ) - when there’s a change in routine - when touching his favourite ‘bankies ’ (blankets) to take away to wash them. So yes, he has toddler emotions and the hormones of a teenage boy. I found that to let him know what’s happening next in our day I’ve added a song to it especially at bedtime. I have always in the 5 years together with Bo, stayed mostly to routine, had at least 5 hours off and on of cuddle time as well as keeping the diet varied but simple. Sugarsnap peas, bananas, peas, rice, sweet potatoes, scrambled and hard boiled eggs, apples, potatoes, plain cooked pasta noodles, oranges etc., and always have the other dish full of varied nuts and seeds. He has his favorites in nuts and seeds and in fruit and likes fresh fruit hand fed . Anyway, there’s lots more I can say and if I can help in anyway let me know. A great deal is based on trust which does take a lot of time which most people don’t have the patience or time. If you want me to post a video of me and Bo I can do that. I will need help with flight trading, I have a harness but only used once as I lost confidence after floffing about trying to get it on him and was ready to move on to something else.
Great video everyone❣️❣️ Love from 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I like this idea, even powdering it and still mixing some small amounts of the pellets to soften in the other goodness so maybe the texture change would turn the bird off from them? no bird expert or even an owner but I still think it's a good idea lol

yeh, powder was what I was thinking too & then VERY gradually add a little of something different, not necessarily even healthy, maybe fruit or molasses or other sugars at first, just to get him used to the idea of eating something slightly different to what he normally does.
The other thing that worked well with my lorikeets was popcorn. They wouldn't touch paper or cardboard or anything to make any foraging toys, so I used popcorn instead, putting cut up fruit at the bottom of little baskets & then covering with popcorn, that they were at least willing to touch in their beaks, unlike the paper etc. One of them in particular got very good at emptying the popcorn with mass flicking out of it to get to the fruit, but then somewhere along the way, they actually decided they liked the popcorn & started eating it too & eventually ended up liking it more than even the fruit! It's still one of their highest ranked treats (yoghurt's about the only one higher), they love the texture of popcorn in their mouths after dipping into their water dish. I think stuff like using foods as foraging fillers that they have to touch in their mouths can be a great way of getting them used to the tastes & textures, ready for later eating, so lots of bowls full of various foods, with the one food he'll eat hidden at the bottom under them, so he has to move all the others to get to what he wants

It was really easy for them it seemed, as they were on Kaytee seed mix, the homemade food was so much more interesting to them, to my surprise they immediately started molting after converting to their new diet with shiny new feathers. Now they love cashew bits and peanut bits for treats and will station for them.

Wow, from how she holds him, I can totally understand why the bird has a hard time getting settled on a stand. I'm sure you have great tips for her on this. I have found that when I have people come to my house, and my Cockatoo doesn't know them, it takes a while for my bird to calm down. This bird is just so happy to have people around and enjoying the interaction. Training him when he's so alert seems to be too much. Best time to train a bird like this is when he's calm, and when no other animals are around. He is the center of your focus, which he likes to be that anyway. What I do is feed my bird his pellets in the morning. In the evening, I take away the pellets and put in a cup full of many kinds of small chopped vegetables, beans, and noodles. I don't serve any fruit other than apples. My Too doesn't like anything else. After a while, he will know this is the daily pattern. Since birds eat before going to bed, this helps him know this is his dinner. If he ends up crying after giving him ample of time to eat (1 hour for example), I then add some pellets and a 1 or two nuts (walnut/cashew/etc). I've also noticed that my bird has totally stopped chewing his feathers since I started this and ensure he is getting enough food. This has been the key to his destructive behavior. I've also really listened/watched when he does cry - there is usually a reason why he's unhappy. Sometimes when he's super happy he'll be loud, but that's not the kind of unhappy, loud crying I'm talking about. One last thing, I celebrate my birds feathers with him. I talk about his pretty feathers all the time and expand his wings and praise him for his pretty feathers almost every other day. He likes this and I do think he understands. Not sure if it helps him know that I want his feather they way they are, but he understands when I don't want him to chew. Hope this info helps someone with a cockatoo or any other problematic parrot. One last thing, I also stopped giving my Too a shower so often. I think it was contributing by making his skin itchy....I could be wrong. Now, I only spray him with the Birdtricks feather spray occasionally. His feathers now have the oily feel and with food, he no longer chews or plucks his feathers. I hope this helps someone.

I have a question. What strikes me first & foremost is the fact that Blizz is so playful- energetic but I don’t see anyone engaging with him in reciprocity, why not? He obviously has an over abundance of energy and to play (interact) to burn off the state of excitement may go a long way to retrain him. Is he need for interaction being met?

Jamie's face palm at 13:45 is so genuine it's so funny. She's reached the training an emotional bird phase where it's just funny cus you can't help it they do what they want.
Edit: Also Jamie yess please take on blizz! They aren't impossible I promise. You helped me with mine the time line just changes because your encouragement and play is their best reinforcement so you can only get very small reps of training in. Lol so true on all counts (including Dave wanting to take him home!) with cockatoos. On a serious note though, I have a daughter on the spectrum but atypical behavior in that she’s SUPER social and lacks spacial boundaries. I felt guilty and struggled because my older 2 boys were gifted (& super fast/easy learners) because I’m not patient like my husband… but that worked in my favor because that’s exactly how learning went with her. Small “bite-sized”sessions that include play and music. The tough cockatoos I’ve been around were similar and it’s a “dance” in that they want and need the play to stay engaged, but knowing that line where they’re suddenly too heightened (& hard to see unless you just know, like Jamie talks about).
I want to just hang out with these guys, soak it all in and be her cockatoo helper!

You guys will do just fine!
I'm sure even you are already done with this little guy because the solution seems obvious to me...because you guys have adressed these issues in the past even.
Blizz is an extremly social and very energetic bird. So the reward is probably that interaction, scritches and excitement are a great way to reward the bird for eating different foods.
And for his energetic attitude, he clearly needs toys.
So what I think you guys will do is introduce toys and hide some treats in them, so he learns that getting to the treat is putting a higher value on the treat itself and he'll give it a try.
Another thing I learned with my own parrots is, that it's easier to convert them to fruits rather than vegetables.
So my parrot will want to eat an apple when I eat an apple, and apples have a similar consistency to cucumbers, so the way I introduced cucumbers was by giving them apples first. I got them interested in apples by occasionally let them check out apple juice mixed with water(they decided to shower in it, which was a fail, but then they still got to taste it from their sticky feathers, we had to take a second shower for that day). Another thing that they really learned to love is corn on the cob, because they could just play with it and pick it apart, they started to like the texture by playing with them, same goes for carrots, basically and food they can playfully pick apart is also food they eventually loved to eat in the chop.
It's like with little kids, they eat whatever they play with, they eat sand when they play with sand, so before we get to a healthy diet, we have to have positive association with healthy food by playing with it.
Maybe I'm completly wrong, but at the very least I refuse to believe a social bird like that is untrainable by BirdTricks.

Birds seem highly observant of sounds, so maybe finding a favorite sound to reward certain behaviors would be a good option? I also have to ask, I know Blizz is largely so overactive because of his diet and so will get better as it improves, but if he's so amped up and just wants to run around when it's time to train, why not just play with him and wear him out so he's tired and therefor more calm, like when you have a young child "get the wiggles out"?

    • @mehere8038
      @mehere8038 2 роки тому

you have to be careful though, cause if you do that, they can associate the person with the heightened state & only ever react to them with that extreme ADHD attitude. These birds don't tend to "tire" & calm, they go from totally hyperactive to overtired & moody & bity because of that.
I personally stick my lorikeets cage outside with the wild birds for a few hours to use up their energy, or if it's too cold, stick them in front of the tv with a bunch of videos of hyped up lorikeets. When hyped up, one of mine will actually come out of his cage & sit on his tv watching perch & start screeching at me/the tv until I turn it on, then he screams with the tv birds until tired & then he's ready to more calmly interact with me

Mine is the same, not plucking or barbering but some are ragged which is likely diet (I'm still trying to get him to try better food) and I don't know about Bliz but my boy refuses to bathe as well.
