- My friend Patty adopted Morgan, a 7 yr old camelot macaw with a foot defect. Her toe had to be amputated since Patty adopted her because of how "jelly" it was - bending this way and that. You can read Morgan's full story here; www.birdtricksstore.com/blogs...
It's functional in helping her climb, she can hold SOME things in it, and she can move the toes.
Morgan has never been trained before so I will sharing my world of training with her. My goal: to free flight train her for outdoors so she can fly with MY Camelot macaws!

Yeah I agree. My bird trooper doesn’t know a lot of tricks except for kisses but we have this strong cosmic bond and we will never be separated. Super understands me with our own language just like she said and trooper understand me like a human and better than a human.ya
When it comes to birds and training birds learn once you bond with them i have a indian ringneck a pair of them they do hang upsided a rope i bought em and they have a bond with me that is perfect and i understand them and they understand me they are the love of my life

@@abbyohara5941 That's awesome, and I absolutely LOVE the name Trooper!
"Birds give plenty of clear signals before they ever bite..."
My cat: *laughing*
My cat does. Slapping tail, inside corners of his eyes go up.
EVERY time my cat bites me, it is because I push it too far. Sometimes she likes the rough play though, and cuddles after, but ALL blame is on me, always.
My African Grey would be sitting on my shoulder and then just out of nowhere suddenly attack my earlobe. Puberty is such a tough time with parrots.
My cat: _Rolls on belly and begs for rubs_

My cat "bites" but you barely feel a thing and instantly stops
It's 3.35am and I dont even want a bird what am I doing here.
I just love this comment so much.

Didn't know it was a thing.
Damn dude, I had to watch other videos of Morgan as well, was an emotional trip. 10/10 would recommend.

I miss my bird terribly. Birds are beautiful and intelligent creatures. She was the highlight of my life.
Hello Adrienne, how're you...
I love watching dedicated bird caretakers interact with their birds. Owning a bird is a huge responsibility and commitment. It's why I don't have one, but I admire people who do and really know what they're doing.
Can you answer in more detail?

seen the intelligence of parrots, it must be so liberating for a parrot to feel supported and to sense one is aware of their intelligence and trying to communicate…

I took care of hundreds of macaws, mostly blue and golds and scarlets, along with a number of various parrots in a roadside zoo. These are amazing and intelligent animals, all of whom have distinct personalities. This young lady understands how to bond with the birds and make them happy.
When I got my cockatiel home for the first time I put her in the cage and left the door open for her to come out. She took a couple of hours but she eventually came to me on the first day, it was the most special thing I’ve ever felt because she trusted me enough to come to me so soon

oli rivers birds are social eaters
I love how you treated her like a real animal, not just a cute object , you treat her perfectly
As it should be always. Treating any type of animal as human, kids, babies or anything alike is wrong. We should do the effort to understand what's their natural behaviour and instincts and deal with that. Stop dressing animals like dolls.
As you should any animal

What i meant was not use animals as toys or dolls or babies.
@Das Bienchen As long as we provide them with their natural needs and requirements that is ok. They should be healthy and happy with us. But should be our company not our entertainement.
I think Morgan knew she needed extra care because of her foot and that's one of the reasons she was so immediately receptive. Of course, the expertise of the owner was a huge part of it.
The way Morgan was kind of flapping her wings while watching your other bird fly was so adorable. Thank you for sharing this journey!

These creatures are amazingly intelligent. To many non-bird owners, and even some owners, it's hard to notice 'emotion'. But they have a soul and trust and care and all sorts. They are preciously delicate in many ways and need to be nurtured. They are naturally timid and nervous so to form a bond is especially satisfying. Love to all other bird owners out there.
I'm 66 and have always wanted a Macaw, but I've been traveling most of my adult life and didn't have a "consistent" home until last year. I know they are long-lived so owning one is out of the question. The work you do is fantastic. Thank you for sharing on UA-cam. 🙂

Thank you so much for doing this video! I didn't adopt a macaw, but I just brought home a fairly unhandled cockatiel that was being kept in conditions that weren't ideal. The guy brought her too me in a waffle box with some holes and she was pretty scared and going wild in there, soon as I got her home I wanted to follow what you did with Morgan in some ways, let her come out of the box on her own instead of reaching in and grabbing her. She flew out eventually in a panic again but after she landed on the floor I just sat by her and talked to her for 10-15 minutes and kept putting my hand close to her (but not right by her), she eventually got curious and stepped up onto my hand! I was pretty happy haha. She didn't want to get down though once she was on me, she kept gripping her feet tighter when I'd try to put her near her new cage, so I just sat back down and waited till she felt confident enough to crawl down. It might be awhile before she decides to step back up on my hand, but I appreciate the information I get out of your videos!
ua-cam.com/video/AG4DiDXhkM0/v-deo.html
That's amazing. Hope you and your cockatiel are doing great.
Hi! I know this video is kind of old now, but, I wanted to say that when I brought my baby green cheek conure home (after a 2 hour drive) I IMMEDIATELY started interacting with her, I never locked her up in her cage. Despite what I heard, I did what I felt was right. She warmed up to me so fast and she was so comfortable. She was only a few months old, but I didn't want to just "lock her up for a couple of days" like people were suggesting.
Poor creature, despite clearly feeling insecure and vulnerable because of the foot is still so sweet and gentle!
I love your skill in not triggering defensive behaviour in her.
Pomo Dorino I find it shocking also. That bird must have a golden personality.
You're a pirate captain now
🤣🤣🤣 She easily could be!
Level 1 Bird
Level 100 Pirate Captain
the reason morgan preferred her breakfast was prolly because "if she's eating that, then it's got to be okay".
where macaws come from, there's a lot of toxic fruits that require them to find some certain clay or minerals to neutralize the toxins, so they won't just munch on any fruit they don't know.
She displays patience compassion and understanding that’s why she has such a connection. She respects them as individuals
Hello there, how're you today...
I'll admit, I figure you'd be just another instagram person who's just trying to show off their wacky animals but you're legit a bird expert. Awesome video.

the true way of dealing with animals compassion patience and love. nice video
Never had any birds, but my last pet was a fluffy little hamster. They say you should give them LOTS of time and space to adjust, but mine got my scent on the way home, and within three days, was trying to get my attention whenever anything went awry. I still remember the first time I put a finger up to the wall of his bin, and he met it on the other side with his paw. Or when he stood up and literally gave me the biggest *:3* smile.
I can't attest to how well this womans' methods work with birds, but I can tell you this much. Pet animals are generally very good with context clues. You just need to be cognizant- look at them and listen when they try to tell you things. I'd say that leaving a critter in their bin just feels like imprisonment. Like a stint in the holding cell.
I wouldn't recommend that- your pet is an individual, and soon-to-be part of your family. They deserve to get to know you, and you them.
When I am training my Quaker or just getting her to do a simple trick, her reward is always me getting exited and saying "Yeah, you did it!" which makes her so happy, when I try to use treats for training she completely ignores the treat and will just step up on my hand if I offer her a treat as a reward, also she will shout "I did it!" back at me in a super happy and exited tone 😂
That was lovely.
Awwwww!
SnazzyCat omg same
Awwww! Soo cute!
SnazzyCat THATS SO ADORABLE
I bought a cockatiel that was stuffed in a tiny cage with several other birds before I got him. He had one tail feather left and was in pretty beat up condition, and, I had no idea how old he was. He wanted zero to do with me. Every time I put my hand in his cage he'd run from it and bite me (never hard though).. It was taking forever and I was so ready to give up but I know how long cockatiels can live..I did not want this bird in my house for the next 10+ years, confined to a cage because he hated everyone so I persisted.
It took me over a year to fully gain his trust. I've had him for 11 years now. He's free range in the house (he has 2 small cages that he sits on, and goes in when he feels like it, but the door to them is open 24/7 and he's rarely in either), and he's 100% attached to me..I do a lot of computer work so when my hands are busy typing, he'll tuck himself up under my chin or my nose and bob his head up and down (he's petting himself since i cant take care of it in that moment).
If you're patient (and let's be honest, don't value your 'quiet' time that much) birds make extremely sweet, affectionate pets. (Don't get me wrong..he can cop a major attitude when he wants to)
Woah. This gives me hope for hopefully future cockatiel that I’m slightly worried about trust.
@@rodneysworld8328 It can take a long time, especially if they dont have their wings clipped (when I got him his wings were clipped already, but I've never had them clipped since), but over time they come around :) My boyfriend of 4 years is absolutely in love with my bird but since he's already picked his person(me), he wants little to do with him, but since he's so persistent (he tries every day to pet/kiss him), my bird has even warmed up to him a little.. he will put his head down when my boyfriend leans in to give him a kiss..then immediately look up and hiss at him..then put his head back down for another kiss
Why do you support practices like that by buying an Animal?

It depends on the type of bird they getting. you must be responsible of waking up and cleaning your birds Bottom cage (every other day) and changing water and food. I’m getting a cockatiel on Monday. I researched, and I think the idea of waking up earlier then I do to clean out her food and water and get to play with her, is actually kinda nice. Will be heading to be earlier now! X
@@jennifer23426 it took me about 20 mins to clean my hans's(Penelope)cage n get her fed n what not.i think they're much easier than cats or dogs,I'm a bird/reptile fan though.keep up the good work.your birds are beautiful!I hope I can get another one sometime soon.
Also.... Consider how old you are because it'll most likely outlive you, so making sure if someone can look after it in the future if that's the case would also be good :)
You know when you said you should never be bitten if you are paying attention to their body language. I can't say how much I completely believe this to be true. The first year I had my Umbrella Cockatoo I was bitten several times, not out of anger, but over stimulation, just playing too rough etc. Since I learned how to "listen" to her I haven't been bitten. Not once.
Is this your bird in the profile pic if so absolutely beautiful
This is also true of almost any animal. Dogs and cats are the most popular pets around the world and people get bitten by them all of the time because they don't pay attention! Most animals will give clear signs that they're uncomfortable with your actions and will most likely bite you if you don't stop what you're doing, but people are stupid and don't bother to read their body language.
Those small little flaps Morgan does watching your other bird fly is adorable!! You can really tell she wants to fly!
I don’t know why these make me emotional 😭🤣 I feel like building confidence, trust, and respect with an animal, or human, over demanding and selfishness is just moving.
"You should never get bitten by a bird. They show you signs." Unless you are any species of cockatoo. Then you are screwed. Lol

I love how you could see her wings sorta flapping slightly when she was watching your other parrot fly to you, haha. Morgan seems like a sweet bird who just needs some love.
I love how she liked ur breakfast more.
I have a rescue parrot We have been together for 34 years. My home is her home, she just sits on her cage. and hangs around bossing everyone includingmy German Shepard. A kinda grouchy part of the family. We love her dearly. She loves my son Dan dearly. Lot’s of responsibility, needs lots of attention We love her dearly(most of the time. lol)
I loved when Morgan was watching flight and started to flap her wings when ever the other bird flew.
You are marvelous! I love that you encourage flight! The world need a lot more kind souls like you!
I think you need to be cautious about Free Flight. Many a domestic bird in my area have been killed by the Hawks that have populated our area. Clipping the flight feathers is recommended by most of the Bird Breeders in my area because of this danger. I'd rather have a momentary unhappy bird than a dead one.
If the house or area is too small, the bird could get injured while flying around. I would rather clip the wings. Besides, cutting their wings wouldn’t hurt them.
It may not seem like cutting the wings hurts them but it in fact, does... psychologically and physically. A bird's respiratory system doesn't even function at full capacity unless the bird is in flight. When it comes to "fight or flight" and you take away flight, you have a bird who feels like all it can do is fight (bite) to communicate. It's incredibly detrimental and selfish to bring a bird into your home and take away its primary means of transportation and overall what actually makes it a bird in the first place.
Free flight outdoors is about risk management. So knowing your predators as well as you know your prey (the parrots) - we studied under a falconer to learn when to fly, where, and how. I'd rather offer an amazing quality of life for the 80+ years my birds will be alive then to settle on life indoors, in a cage, without ever experiencing what they were meant to do; fly. Maybe your area isn't safe to fly in, that's fine. Ours isn't great either which is why we take trips to do so.
BirdTricks - Oh, okay! :>
You are so patient and kind to these gorgeous creatures.
my heart super melted at 19 min when she was like flapping her own wings when she saw your other bird fly
when I got my bird she was obsessed with me!! wouldn’t let me leave the room😁 it was an instant bond!
I don't know a thing about bird care (other than food and water) or behaviour, but you appear to know your stuff and I'm glad you go with it and don't listen to other "experts"
I'm a dog person and with over forty years of experience I don't listen to the "experts". A lot of people say the same with a new dog or puppy, "leave it there to settle in", "leave it alone in the kitchen overnight to settle in" first thing I do is like you, establish that I'm a person to trust, I am a safe place to go to when in fear, pain or in need of attention, I am the the most interesting person in any environment. The result, like you a well balanced loving animal that will happily sample new experiences with you because it trusts your judgement.
Thank you for enriching these birds lives.
exactly! I am a bird and dog person, but when we got a puppy, everyone was like "leave it alone" I didn't listen, I let her come out of the cage, and on the first day she would come when I told her to. We bonded for the first day, and now she is the most loving thing you will ever see.

Thank you everyone that owns a bird should watch your videos. So many people get birds bc they are so beautiful and don't understand how much care they require. Happens with large marine aquariums also.

“No. I want YOUR breakfast” lol
You're such a loving person. The bird is really lucky to be in your home !!
Yeah I would feel really lucky too when I used to roam around freely and then be kept in a small house.
@@michael2305 oh shut up. if I had a pet like you, i would keep you in the smallest cage ever.
@@michael2305 these birds are born in captivity, genius.. they are not taken out of the wild. 🙄
No Caged bird is a lucky bird. A lucky bird is one born in the wild who is never caught by poachers.
@@michael2305 uh-
I miss my "Gaia" Greenwing so much, we had 20 years together. Thanks for showing this correct attitude to handling Macaw's, I did similar.
PS. Taken me years to be able to look at them again since she passed. So thanks again.
Having patience and being gentle does it, obviously. I‘m impressed how much Morgan trusted you within that short amount of time!
I work from home, boss rings me and is like "Did you manage to get the proposal sent by close of play for Stanley Security today?"
"Yes..........Yes I did".
What I meant to say was "No, I've been watching people get new pets for the last 3 hours instead".
Ha ha..
@madzangels if ur Boss is watching this Video too... and reads this comment have fun😂
You're fired.
When they fly it's like a taradactile going thru the room.
Nancy Fahey a pterodactyl? 😂

Nancy Fahey is ur Morgan having any problem with its left leg. i observe it's not moving left leg comfortably
Nancy Fahey PTERODACTYL
@@tetrapod64 it's a sex thing
This lady is a freakin professional with birds, I don't think I have ever seen anything like this. Its like the bird whisperer.
Her channel is called "BirdTricks" and it's great!
Shes a beautiful colour, shes a rainbow of beauty.
I love that you immediately interacted with her, I believe in that 100% (unlike other people) me personally would do the same thing, to establish trust right away, some people are like “oh no don’t even look at them for the first week THEY WILL DIE OF FRIGHT” and where yes they will be slightly scared it’s nice to let them know that there’s nothing to be afraid of
I think so to
This is a long shot, (since this was posted so long ago), but I want your opinion. I'm getting a cockatiel, which tend to be really flighty, would this still be the case? Then I would just have a cockatiel flying all around the room/house instead of bonding with me. That's my only worry. How am I to get them to stay by me instead of flying away.
@@jazzymin145 Let the bird come to you, and give them lots of opportunities and incentive to do so. At the beginning of the video you saw that she left the bird on the counter and let her come out on her own time, but coming back often to talk to her and offer treats. If they really don't want you by the end of the day, coax them onto a perch and put them in their cage for the night to try again the next day. The big this is to not be grabby and chasing them around the house. Let them find their own comfortable routine. (I work at a parrot sanctuary and grew up owning and training them) hope that helps!
The point is to not overwhelm it in the first 24 hours. Should be just for observation.
Oh.. I thought you had like one or two birds.. but my God it's a zoo
THE BIRB QUEEN
😂👍 she's the Queen Parrot...and you know we all 💖💟💗 it.
I wonder how she even sleeps!¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But all of these birds have great homes!
So nice of you to care for animals with all hearth and same time with common sense. I'm so happy that these beautiful and emotional bird end in your familly care.
Morgan is a beauty. She really listens, even though she seems to understand you, she isn't quite sure yet.
Someone already commented about this but i'll reinforce it: please help getting people aware of how exotic animals are breeded and where they get their animals from. A lot of species, including ENDANGERED ones like some macaws, are taken from our forests here in brasil and sold illegally all around the world. They travel in horrible conditions, many times are wrapped inside PVC pipes with only some holes to breathe. About 90 to 95% of the animals arrive dead JUST BECAUSE OF THESE ILLEGAL TRANSPORTATIONS. Besides that, a lot of people buy animals just for the beauty and not knowing a single thing about keeping them. Is common to find cases where the animal is neglected or simply abandoned. PLEASE RESEARCH BEFORE HAVING ANY PET AND FIND A BREEDER THAT IS LEGAL, RESPECTFUL AND THAT DOESN'T SEE THE ANIMALS AS A WAY OF GETTING MONEY
I believe what you meant was 90-95% of pet deaths before adoption occur in transportation, not that 90-95% actually die in transportation. That would be flushing a lot of money down the toilet for no gain...
Exactly what I was thinking, it doesn't make any sense.
Sorry but i couldn't understand your doubt. What i meant to say was that about 90 to 95% of the animals die on the transportation because of the conditions they're put in, like small cages with at least 100 birds, macaws inside pvc pipes, reptiles inside plastic bags with no ventilation and etc. You can see all of that in documentaries but i believe most of them (at least the ones i watch) are in portuguese. I'll try to find something and post it here so you can see the cruel reality. And might not make sense for you because maybe you don't know the value of these animals. I'll try to explain: the majority of them is taken from the wild, so there are no costs (to buy them, is what i mean). They send them in small storage to fit as much as they (im)possibly can so the costs are very little. Even though most of the animals die because of this, the ones that can be sold afterwards pays for ALL the dead ones, mainly because most of them are endangered. Just so you can have an idea, an macaw (can't recall the species) is worth about 20k euros. Even if only one is sold, is profitable anyway. Hope you guys can understand, i've tried my best to simplify, specially because english is not my native language. I just want to show that might sound exagerated to cause horror but is our cruel reality and a lot of people have no idea of the animals suffering in illegal traffic.
This article shows a little bit of what happens: www.google.com.br/amp/s/news.mongabay.com/2015/10/sao-paolo-trafficking-smuggling-brazils-wildlife/amp/
So out of a crate of 100 birds, 5 arrive alive? I am against animal abuse, but I think your statistics are off, or the way you interpretted them.
I do remember similar statistics but it was that 90-95% of birds that die before adoption, it was caused in transportation, not that 90-95% of birds that are transported die. These are saying two totally different things.
5:45 when she said that she forgot her tea and it was cold, I remembered my tea and it was also cold 😹

Sexy birds. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Just a beautiful family. I love how we're introduced slowly to all family members, the newcomer first Morgan, then the birds, the little girl child, the hubby. The most beautiful of all is the woman looking after these incredible creatures. I just love Morgan. Macaws are the best. They remind me personality wise, a little of cockatiels. Australian yellow combs.
Hello Amanda, how're you doing today??
After all these years, Morgan is the one who brings me to ugly tears. Still!!
❤️🐦❤️
Hello there, how's things going for you??
I don’t want a huge exotic bird like the ones you have but what the heck, if I was getting one, I would totally listen to you! I have no idea what I’m doing here but I’m honestly not disappointed because this was super interesting lol.
It was so cute when she ate your food , I would love a bird but they just seem too high maintenance for me
I thought so to but the more I research the more they seem lower maintenance then a dog
They would. Be 10 x more a bird will require attention non stop and is a 3 year old for the rest of your life
Generally all birds are pretty high maintenance but some require less attention and maintenance than others. They’re a commitment that you need think through and do research on before going with it
If you like birds, try a smaller breed until you are more familiar with the nature, needs and body language of birds.
HandyDandyCrafts yeah, they could get 2 parakeets and start with those since they’re small and won’t need as much attention if you have just a single bird since they’ll have each other. Parakeets are easy starter birds in my experience
Good, if this is aimed at children it should be easier for 52 year old me to understand lol x thanks bird tricks! I've had my conure for about 8 years now, and apart from the hormonal times of the year is a lovely little bird. But I thought you had to force them to behave. I would put my hand over him & count to ten, it would give me & him time to calm down after a nip or bite, but after watching another video of yours, I have now got a clicker and a chopstick. So we're going back to basics. No more time out for him. Hopefully now it will be in a language we will both understand! Thanks birdtricks xx
I had a green macaw 🦜 named Taco growing up. This video made me miss him!! Taco is still alive and living with my grandparents friends in Florida. These birds are so beautiful!!
I recently lost my parrot a few months ago due to old age, it’s heartbreaking to think about but watching this brings me joy. Thank you for having such a good bond with them
Awww, so sorry for your loss.
Awww, im sorry for your loss, hope that if you get a new bird it'll bond with you
king ghidorah i was heavily debating getting a new parrot, giving another birb a life full of love sounds great, I just don’t know if I’m ready for that yet. Thank you so much for your condolences, it means a lot 🙏🏼
How old was your parrot to die of old age? Truly interested. Is this a species of bird that can live to be 75 80s years old?
@@marypenebaker898 my parrot was with me for over 20 years. I lost him when he turned 27. He was a Senegal parrot.
