He tells the story (on Justin Hawkins interview??) that the Sony rep/agent who was dealing with him was really sound & gave him lots of room to try recover etc., but when Ren told him this was going anywhere they agreed to let his contract lapse without any hassle, despite the industry meat-grinder artists are put through.
Ren got super powers from a tick bite. His Lyme Disease went misdiagnosed for seven years. The doctors told him that his symptoms were psychosomatic, that it was his brain making his body sick, so Ren went to war with himself, inside his own head, but he just kept getting worse. With a full tank of meds that were meant to keep him sane and street drugs that he took just to numb the pain, he turned to his music to maintain his brain while his health and sanity began circling the drain. He finally got a proper diagnosis, but the damage had been done. Now he's in Canada, receiving stem cell therapy to try to repair some of the permanent nerve damage that he suffered.
He was signed by Sony when in his late teens and was dropped soon after when he got sick. According to his website, the pig mask is because he used to hallucinate seeing people in animal masks possibly due to his appreciation of Orwell.

Ren was (is) a busker in Brighton, and was picked up by Sony about 8-9 years go on the strength of that, but they dropped him when he got sick, and he's been independent ever since. With regards to the pig/pig head, I don't believe there's been an official proclamation of its exact meaning but it appears in various videos of his ("The Hunger" is one you might not have seen yet) and I've personally concluded it's broadly an allusion to Animal Farm and/or Lord of the Flies, and Ren's general disdain for the whole "system" as embodied by those works.

Ren actually spoke about the pig in his Twitter stream back in December. He said he liked George Orwell and his book Animal Farm. He said the pig will make more appearances in his other new songs coming out later this year.

I'm not sure if you've figured this out in the last three weeks, but Ren *was* signed by Sony Music. He got lyme disease which went misdiagnosed as schizophrenic psychosis. Because of being "psychotic" Sony dropped him from the label. So I'd say he's pretty well spot on when he says the music industry is cut-throat.
As another person who deals with ongoing health issues, I feel your wife's frustration with the healthcare industry. To extend the car analogy a bit more: cars were originally designed by the human mind and despite some small changes based on model, they all essentially work the same way. With medicine, where each 'model' is an original build and where issues can be on a microscopic level, it's essentially a bit like listening to advice from a friend when your car breaks down when the friend has the automotive expertise to change the oil.
FYI: Bre Petrunko - Koutev Bulgarian National Ensemble is the "name" of the background "song". its a Bulgarian Chant. Sadly most will know it from those little tiktak hobby-stars using it for some "bad" stuff mostly. but it would be a really "happy" song normally

On the topic of the industry being cut throat: artists do not only sell their music to producers, they actually sell their entire Name and Brand. And if they do not, then most music producers will not produce any of their music at all. That means that not only does their creative power go to the producers but also their name is underneath the producer's name, and they may not get all of the revenue for the sales of their songs in the future. 😔

I went down the Ren rabbit hole . I found where he was with his band. He has been in a few bands actually but, I found War Pigs by Black Sabbath and he was singing it . The dude can do anything. Was nice to find something I knew. but I liked 90 % of his stuff or anything he was involved with. Highly talented.
I'm guessing that the NHS covered most of the med costs, so Europe is fairly different than the US in that respect. However, if a consultant makes any kind of stab/guess & misses, everybody goes over the cliff with them - GP's & even other consultants will defer to whats written down - you can go around the houses multiple times before someone grasps the nettle. If you catch any of the blogs he did when he was at his worst, they'll break your heart as well as give you insight into their living hell. Check out 'Crutch' - such a simple, amazing song/video, written when he was at a very low ebb.

I think the genius of this song is the backing track. Not only the drum beat and how it moves the song but also the vocal track. It’s eerie and dare I say Africanized enough to symbolize base thought form when you have a cacophony of voices in your head that never leave you alone. It’s very base. Fookin genius.
