***** Nice. You should consider writing a book.
I relate to many of your descriptions about being a loner in school and therefore starting to observe and study human behavior. I noticed humans doesn't differ at all from most of the mammals, except that we have a complex form of communication, so it's quite "easy" to find patterns and what causes them to be.
I would really enjoy sharing information if you don't mind.

If they did, could you imagine the chaos? Dying all the sudden, because you have full control over usually automatic processes, and simultaneously trying to control them all at once while having an existential panic attack... and that's just one of the possibilities. It'd be funny though, being so over-qualified that you couldn't do something simple because you're operating on too high of a level. haha!

I remember watching this series when I was 13. It got me so interested in the subject. I made me want to become a psychologist. Now I'm 18 and will graduate from school next year. I've been determined and put down effort into my school work and will (if I keep my grades relatively good), be able to get into the 5 year (+ 1 year of practice) psychology program to become a licensed psychologist. It’s been such a long time since this video was posted so you'll probably not see this, but thank you so much, Hank

Not entirely. As human psychology also deals with trying to understand certain human psychology that maybe outside of the normal ( bell curve ) psychology of a human ( either for the better or worse ). E.g.The all too many pathological behaviours ( within a healthy social psychology) that drive humans to inflict cruelty .Edit. My mistake as l was inferring to psychology in general not specifically human psychology. E.g. Psychology is also about attempting to understand other non human animals. A harder task .I.e. Can a human psychology ever comprehend a dolphin psychology.

@@evolutionrhythm4416 You've given an example that supports what you're trying to disagree with; brains trying to understand their own (potentially cruel) actions. A common human action (violence intended to cause suffering) as an example of how psychology works to understand common human actions... like cruelty.

@@asdfgretw123 mAybe a case of crossed wires ( communication) as you seem to think I'm wrong ( show me / link to the peer reviewed research). All l am suggesting ( it's a fact ) is that empirically gathered evidence ( research that's peer reviewed) is a good method of avoiding human bias . And the rest of the " alternative " " methods " e.g. Your opinion V mine , Belief, social cohesion, making stuff up to meet your immediate agenda, folk stories and religions etc, are at best socially relevant and at worst a complete nightmare.I.e. if some of these religions ever became overly Dominant as they did in the dark ages ( but the majority will never settle on one religion nor one god . Just like no nation will agree that blue is the best colour).
Human psychology isn't comparably that complicated ( narcissistic opinions aside).
And that's why it's so f.....g hard for some to charge their habits . Even if those habits are a short road to death .
Within the context of ecology, the average human psychological is the road to hell ( on planet Earth ).
On average humans are a reactionary species. Reacting to perceived immediate threats, desires etc.
So, the unknown question is , what level of ecological/ planetary degradation has to take place before humans wake up to the biggest threat ever to face humanity ?. Is a " it's actually too late " to prevent severe ecological collapse ( food systems failure) possible.
Nobody ( including ecologists) has all the relevant evidenced based information to answer this with any degree of confidence. Climate change is a " inconvenient truth " , we must do our best to reduce the possibility of it becoming a global catastrophe.

    • @evolutionrhythm4416
      @evolutionrhythm4416 5 років тому +3

@@asdfgretw123 I agree l didn't get to the point l was inferring. As a thought experiment lets say humans have the cognitive potential to fully understand their own psychology ( not " fake" in order to gain social esteem , but a real scientifically based comprehension). E.g. The conscious would comprehend what it is and why/how it functions the way it does . I.e " The human brain knowing itself".
Psychologically that would not answer psychological questions that are not specifically of human ( hominid) origin . e.g. The psychology of a dog has changed quite significantly since it's wolf ancestry ( e.g. To live in human social groups ) . Much of the dog ( wolf sub species ) psychological change has occurred due to human selective breeding ( I.e. Humans selectively breeding wolf's >>dogs based on preferred behavioural characteristics ( " piggy backing" on the process of natural selection ).
Thus , even if some evolutionary psychologists can understand human psychology / behaviour , that would not mean we can fully comprehend the psychology of a dog . Thus , " psychology" is not all about the human brain trying to understand itself " . Of course narcissism seems to be a driving force 😉. ( an understanding of evolution is fundamental to predictable and comprehensive understanding of human psychology for reasons that are beyond the scope of a internet forum .I.e. Read the research like any good scientists does )

I disagree with that - simply because it's assuming that a single brain is not capable of understanding one other brain or itself only. Which would hold true. However, there are hundreds of thousands, millions even, of brains working towards completely understand one single brain.
Take, for example, computers - the original computer (representing a single brain) could only do simple math problems. It was not capable of understanding the intricacies of another version of itself. However, a complex supercomputer (representing a network of humans) can easily break down the code generating the old school computer.
So, while one individual is not capable of discovering everything about the brain, a network of human beings can.

    • @JakeTheHappyGuy
      @JakeTheHappyGuy 8 років тому +4

Wonderful discourse. What about the brains of other organisms in our animal kingdom? Even a network of those minds cannot possibly discover how one of their own minds works, even a billion of them as none will physically have the ability to be aware enough to look into their own minds. They clearly have mental capacities that limit their intelligence and understanding of the environment. Does that mean they match this quote? Well, we cannot understand the principles of their simpler minds and consciousness even with our higher mental capacity. So I agree with this quote... in a way.

    So basically,
Human minds are one of the most complicated things and the rules that govern it are mysterious & elusive.
While the term "psychology" was coined around 16th Century, the practice of science around it was no established until the 1800. The formal definition of psychology has evolved over the last several decades, today we can safely call it the science of behavior and mental processes.
Psychology is one of the most extremely diverse in terms of the questions it proposes, the method it applies and the school of though it contains.
For instance, right around Freud's(1900-1939) time, there were a lot of different schools of thought of about how the study of the human mind should be tackled. Mainly, there were the ideas of structuralism, functionalism and psychoanalysis.
-"Structuralism" in 1879 by Wilhelm Wundt & Edward Bradford Titchener:
"Structuralism" focusses on how patient feel when they do something like watched the sun set, or smell a coffee, or licked a kitten, or whatever.
This relied heavily on introspection and it became too subjective and since it's not possible observe a patient's inner thoughts or feelings, so ultimately, the structuralist school of thought was fairly short-lived.
-"Functionalism" in 1890 by William James:
Focuses on the "function of behavior", why we think and feel and smell and lick, or whatever. This approach of 'functionalism', was based on Charles Darwin's idea that adaptive behaviors are conserved throughout the evolutionary process.
    -"Psychoanalysis" in 1900 by Freud:
A radical kernel of Psychoanalysis suggests that "our personalities are shaped by unconscious motives" which mean we are all profoundly affected by mental processes that we are not aware of. Another important part of the "Psychoanalysis" is that "unconscious, the thing below consciousness" is still discover-able. An even though we are not aware of it, we can come to understand it through a therapeutic technique using dreams, projections and free association to root out repressed feelings and gain self insight.
So what Freud was really saying was that "mental disorders could be healed through talk therapy and self-discovery". And this was a really big breakthrough. After "The Interpretations of Dreams", Freud went on to publish over 20 more books and countless papers with an iconic cigar in hand all the while.
-"Behaviorism" by Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B. F. Skinner:
Behaviorism focuses on the study of observable behavior.
The first half of the 20th Century was dominated by "behaviorism" promoted by Ivan Pavlov, John B. Watson, and B. F. Skinner.

-"Psychodynamic Theories" descendant of Freud's Psychoanalysis:
Psychodynamic Theories focuses on importance of early experiences in shaping the unconscious and how that process affects out though, feelings, behavior and personalities.

By the mid-20th century, there were other major forces in psychology like "Humanist Psychology", which focuses on nurturing personal growth; "Cognitive Science" and "Neuroscience", all of which contributed their own unique takes on the study of mind.
    Psychology:
Modern day definition of psychology "the study of behavior and mental processes", is a nice amalgamation that pulls from all these different schools of thought.
It recognizes the need for observing and recording behavior, but it also gives credit to our mental processes, what we think and feel and believe.
Psychology is an integrative science and while there are different school of thoughts & theories, the essence of the discipline has everything to do with creating different ways of asking interesting questions and attempting to answer them through all kinds of data-gathering methods.
    The human mind is complicated.
There is no single way to effectively crack it open; it must be pried at from all sides.
Harvard astronomer Owen Gingerich has gazed into the distant horizon of space, and even he has acknowledged that the human brain is by far the most complex physical object known to us in the entire cosmos, and we all get to have one!

It's actually more of a "learning difference" than disability. Idk what to pick, I know I have a ton of time still but it’s kinda overwhelming 😂 I feel a calling in both fields, so we’ll see what I end up picking. I picked journalism as one of my courses in high school so I’ll see how I like it.
Best of luck to everyone! xx

I am autistic (high-functioning with Aspergers) as well. Unfortunately, the past few years i have been plagued with completely separate new things and neurological conditions includin depression, OCD and other anxiety disorders, possible schizophrenia, and an array of physical things that is not relevant. As a result of the many things I have albeit they are very bad, they have made me VERY interested in the human mind and wanting to learn more about these things, the very things I can relate to so much. I am currently enrolled in AP Psychology at my high school, and this whole series might also help me study for that AP Exam of course. I have already watched the videos on the mental disorders, but have decided to watch EVERY video in this series, starting with this. I admire your similar goal. I say Crash Course does a darn good job with their series's.. Sorry for the rant though

I'm a visual learner, so your videos really help me to remember my studies by using my reading and video's together. Thank you so much for developing videos for us that next extra support in learning. Can't wait to use your other videos on other subjects.
