  • It may seem a tad confusing or contradicting for someone who may be afflicted with sadness to listen to such overwhelmingly negative music with some of the most self-loathing lyricism you'll ever find. But from a mental health perspective solely, why do people feel so inclined to adopt and adore DSBM music?
From the sound to imagery, doomer culture and why it's not nearly as contradicting as you might think, I attempt to answer that here!

I wanted to go over DSBM in a video essay format, going over some of the more philosophical and deeper meanings of the genre instead of solely focusing on the music as I've done in the past. What're your opinions on it, though?! Whether you enjoy it not, I'd love to know why! But for now, cheers, rock on, stay heavy and have yourselves a fantastic rest of your day or night, depending on when you see this!!!!!!!

DSBM is right up there with my favorite shit. Lots of late nights alone with booze and cigs, just thinking of my next steps. My regrets, my future, life and death. Memories and old faces. It might sound cheesy, but it REALLY does burrow into my mind and change me for the evening sometimes… Shining, Abyssic Hate, Hypothermia, Xasthur, Trist, etc…. The main issue with DSBM for me, is how infectious it becomes when you get into it. It can consume you. Hours and hours can go by like a trance. 3:00am on your 16th beer when you last checked the time and it was 6:00PM yesterday. My UA-cam Ads on my living room TV have even been suicide advice and disclaimers due to the algorithm. But I’m a huge fan of The Beatles, Aesop rock, The Mountain Goats, even Bo Burnham, etc. So sometimes other shit breaks it up and snaps me out of it….
    Long story short:
Like you said… It REALLY should be in doses. You have to have something else too. Its dangerously infectious and thought-provoking. It can easily push fragile minds over the edge.
    Great video

God I love this comment. I related a ton to it...bringing about those feelings deep within you. For me that's always been ambient music and dark ambient. You don't ask for a genre to embody you, it simply speaks to you.
You really hit the nail on the head with burrowing into your mind. When you're vulnerable and searching desperately for an outlet it can truly wiggle its way into your very being and warp your senses, only hopefully temporarily.
Thank you a ton for sharing your story and the support.

based on my experience with this kind of music, i've always found it to be its own genre entirely. i've also always found it to be more appealing to goths than metalheads. i guess it's not hard to see why honestly. there's something about listening to dark music when you feel depressed that's more uplifting than listening to happy music. it's generally goths, and people who don't normally love metal who tend to listen to it. myself included. i'm a goth/industrial fan primarily. and i generally am not big on metal, yet DSBM i've been able to get into.

Been through a lot of mental health struggles myself for the past nearly 2 years. Attempted suicide, lost some friends due to letting my mental health slip, and overall just hating everything. Now do I listen to much DSBM? Not really, I find bands like Today Is The Day to be WAAAY more depressing/maddening both sonically and lyrically than Silencer, but I still have a lot of respect for the genre. And, when I’m tired of the Today Is The Day style depressiveness, which is depression mixed with some anger, I miiiiiight just turn on Silencer for some somewhat calmer melancholy. Both of which are great to listen to when life just feels like hell.

I like to listen to DSBM from time to time. It’s therapeutic for me. I have depression that gets worse in spring and summer because wildfires have left me traumatized. The music allows me to feel understood in my anger, grief and fears. Most people want to challenge the anger I feel towards the world or my circumstances, most people undermine my grief and don’t understand my fears. DSBM doesn’t challenge any of my emotions but allows me to find comfort in the fact that someone else feels and understands my emotions.

Also a weird side-tangent about one of your comments regarding people not listening to music to feel worse- sometimes that is actually the case, but not necessarily to have some sort of contrived emotional state. I've gone into some records knowing they would make me feel like shit (i.e. understanding the artist's perspective), and in rare instances listened to things specifically to make myself feel worse. I have difficulty expressing and experiencing emotions, so amplifying negative feelings can help bring them to the surface in a constructive way

Autism and PTSD coupled with political events that made my home country of Russia an unlivable hellscape again and forced me and parents to move elsewhere years ago. Listening to dark or melancholic music like DSBM, Funeral Doom, Post-Rock, and various other genres helps to get through the day a lot. It’s the similar effect you get from reading Cioran or Mainlander. Think of it as your friend approaching you and saying “Alright man, your life is miserable, let’s talk about it. Without excessive romanticizing, without showing needless pity, without showing the vain compassion. Let’s simply talk about it as it is.”

I've been a metalhead since I was 10 years old and I'm now 63. DSBM and doom are the subgenres that speak to me. I do listen to other metal subgenres, and other types of music other than metal. But DSBM never made me depressed. I was that way long before DSBM before it was a thing. I'm just glad that it's there for metalheads like me. I think that's why I've never liked glam/hair metal or pop, or music like that. I can't relate to it.

I do think DSBM has some good bands in the genre, it definitely has bred some interesting personalities in the scene. I’ve gotten some insight on the black metal in general from Reuben Christopher Jordan, of Benighed in Sodom and multiple other projects. I do feel that “DSBM” is between bands that are genuine in what they write and play, and then there’s others that trying to sell you things. Making completely empty music just to make a buck, and putting on a complete façade to make themselves seem more than mundane. Overall, I like bands that real with their music and don’t need to label it as DSBM.

    • @TheMetalTempestYT

Fully agree with this. I think if you truthfully have the heart to be making this type of music genuinely, it bleeds through. While I haven't always said it, since adopting this adage my ability to deal with media has improved considerably: "'Display' does not equal 'Endorse'". Metal music has often been instrumental (heh) in diffusing negative emotion instead of engendering it. Not a lot of people understand that. Maybe it was more than just slowness that made Metallica's fans hissy whenever they played Fade to Black live--that the crankypants types merely refused to examine fatal stab wounds through eye sockets.
In the same vein, I never even heard of the genre of DSBM until now, primarily because I wasn't into seeking out this kind of music since I don't want to dwell on depression. I'd rather do something with music playing in the background--all kinds, not just metal, many things, often revolving around a small business. It's no offense, but I handle depression by making sure there is something purposeful that I am doing at any given moment. Can't dwell on meaninglessness if there's no meaninglessness to go around, right?
While dissecting a bad mood is every bit as important as confronting it somehow, I don't often hear about metal bands that lighten the mood, particularly with buffoonery. I never hear about bands that embrace a humorous tone beyond tongue-in-cheek slyness other than Psychostick--and they've been at it for years with nary a competitor. Do you know about other bands that manage to take the piss out of metal at large, along with everything else in the vicinity, and still rock out on a technical level?
