I worked for an oil and gas company before I retired. I have many colleagues who were mostly engineers from Nigeria, Lagos. When they visited Malaysia for an assignment, I had to find a temporary accommodation for them in KL, and it saddens me that most landlords would outright reject them as soon as Nigeria was mentioned. I had to apologise to my colleagues profusely, I felt ashamed, and they felt uncomfortable. I managed to get them accommodation eventually. My Nigerian colleagues were aware of their reputation here and took this experience in stride. My African colleagues were so friendly, genuine and I have to agree, their culture is very compatible with ours! I am friends with them till today!

The perception of the locals towards African students is highly dependent on how they want to be perceived. We had 2 african classmates back in collage (a boy and a girl). Everybody seemed to like the boy better because he was a serious student and really worked hard (so having him as a groupmate for a project would be awesome!), the girl however had a complete opposite character (everybody would sigh if we ever end up being in a group with her). It doesnt matter who you are or where you come from, the rule of thumb when it comes to living abroad is to be a little more assertive than your usual self (you make friends easily this way) and create a reputation that is worth respecting.
My neighbour next room at UPM Serdang in 2003 was a Nigerian - Michael.. He (always) sang Nigerian song (it might ethnic song) when he felt missing his hometown...

Great work. I love the approach of letting the African students tell their stories by themselves. I also like the cutting and editing, with plenty of stills that lets the viewer almost feel as if he is physically present. What I feel is missing is clarification about the plans of the Malaysian government issuing a quota for African students. This information could have been shown at the end of the film to answer the question that was raised by the comments of the protagonists. It would also correspond nicely to the figures in the introduction. Otherwise a very good insight, thumbs up :)

Theys seem like good Muslims, always doing sunat (non-mandatory) prayers besides the mandatory 5 daily ones, they always read the Quran..any time I go to pray here, I have Africans to my left, right, behind and in front of met. But I have no prejudice for them, they're just humans like me, most of all, they're my fellow Muslim brothers..many of them are fine looking, I mean quite handsome, so it's wrong to say that Africans are not good-looking. I am a Malaysian man...
In my church, there is a sweet couple, an African woman and her chinese husband. Her children are so adorable! Even though my church is in chinese, she is willing to go there with her children who speaks english and chinese and understands chinese.We usually speak english with her.

The Tanzanian ,Nabibian student are serious student that really do their study until the Nigerian come about and cause so much negativity toward African student.
The negative impression to the African not because the skin color or because the person come from Africa, but those negative impression from the local folks is refferred the several criminal cases done by the African. The negative image about the drink and drunk, mess in public, drug traffickers, money scam and fighting so on. Those frigthening issues resulted the negative impression about the African. Other issues is, the local not familiar and less knowledge about the African. Yes African continent comprises of many states and with different culture, languages and customs and different society structures, the only same things the skin colour is same among the African and the african also with many tribes. Those criminal cases is majority are involving the Nigerian African, no offense, facts as according to our police force statistic most of them is Nigerian. Therefore, to eliminate this negative impression toward African, it is important to the African to promote the African culture, custom and languages and their living structure of each African states in Malaysia so that its will provide the basic knowledge about African to the Malaysian. This will easy to the Malaysian to recognise the African is from which country and easy to understand the culture so that can develop the mutual understanding between local and those africans.

In sarawak and sabah, it is so much peaceful than KL because it is so busy there. That is what almost a lot of people told me when they study in KL and over here, it is not that busy. I am not saying it is bad to be in KL, but just that it is much more busy, stressful and a lot of racism happens, they said that it is actually a bit more expensive there when buying things. They also don't have sugarbun😂
