- Chris Pratt and his wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger, are facing backlash for their decision to demolish a historic home, known as the "Zimmerman House," to build a new mansion. I don't really see a problem with it. The house was ugly.

Most old homes shouldn't be saved.
But usually those older homes were well built. You don't get construction like that today, and the materials aren't as good.
California modernist houses all suck. They suck to live in as they have all-glass walls, so they get butt-ass cold on winter nights. I respect your opinion, however, I’m unimpressed with most mid-century modern buildings as they are cold, harsh, and lack warmth. I do notice how people like to get away from the past and have their own statement with architecture or fashion. But bringing back mid century modern Saying it is so great as opposed to things that are more ornate is foolish. If you look at all the beautiful stuff that was produced in the 1880s through the 19 teens that stuff was far more impressive as it was produced with craftsmanship. It’s really difficult to find any beauty in our “architecture” after going to Europe and being awe struck by the history and majesty that’s lacking here.

There are many absolutely beautiful buildings in the U.S. Go to Savannah, GA and visit the Basilica. Go to Asheville, NC. They also have a beautiful Basilica. Was just there last Christmas. The story behind it is incredible. Travel the U.S. and you'll find many awe inspiring buildings - often built by the same builders who built the beautiful buildings you've seen in Europe.

I love those houses and I wasn't born in the 50s. My faith in Christ isn't bolstered by the pitch of my house's roof.
That said, if this house was iconic, a group of devotees should have pooled their money and bought it.
I also think there's something to the "Hating on Pratt" argument. A week ago, most of those up in arms didn't even know the house existed.
It’s so sad that modern cars and buildings lack any level of imagination and creativity!
I agree we don’t need to preserve every example of historical architecture… but though I’d never heard of it before, a quick search reveals that the house did seem to be rather unique. dated mid-century houses can still be renovated and updated without destroying their defining character, and while it might not be the best house for a big family, it’s certainly not “bad architecture.”
openness and nice views can be very nice things in a home, and the mid-century offerings of south California can indeed be very beautiful. it’s a shame the house is no more, but I suppose if it was truly historical significant, then some preservation agency should’ve purchased it and taken charge 🤷🏻♂️

“Tradition is not just something that’s old, it’s something that’s DURABLE” GREAT WAY TO PUT IT.
Story time: we own a mid-century home made of limestone that has an UGLY limestone wall in the living room. It’s dingy looking, yellowed, gray, rusty colors - can’t even clean it to make it look nice. That color is what it is. We are remodeling the house and told our designer that we wanted to drywall over it, bad put a fresh modern stack stone around for fireplace and she flipped. You CAN’T do that! This is all the rage - mid-century!” She made us feel like we were doing something wrong. But I can’t express enough how much we HATE that wall. We talked to the construction supervisor to express our displeasure and he said, “It’s YOUR house and you have to live with it. If you don’t like it, drywall over it and make it what you want.” He must have said something to the designer cuz the next time she came, she was much more agreeable with what we wanted to do. Can’t wait to see this transformation in June. The supervisor is the whole reason we hired them to do the rest of the house after they remodeled our family room.
If they cared about it, why didn't they buy it themselves??
Just say they didn't like that black people were oppressed when the house was built
I’m an interior designer that specializes in historic preservation, so I do not see it as “perverse” as you said… and what a strange choice of words. Homes in the USA are built of cardboard and they don’t last. People don’t take care of their homes. They just live there until the house starts to need major renovations and then they abandon it and move on to the next house. The prospective buyers are then left with an overpriced junk heap that will be a money pit whether they restore or remodel. 🤷🏻♀️ That’s why so many older neighborhoods look like garbage. That being said, it’s his house and he can do whatever he wants with it. It’s just funny that people who are absolutely *disturbed* by ugly old 1920’s civil war statues being torn down are rushing to his defense about tearing down a historic home. So it’s bad to tear down a statue because we don’t like to erase history, but it’s cool to tear down a historic home because history only matters when it’s on our side? Mmmkay…
If you paid 12 million for a home in California, it deserves to be leveled
Exactly !
I agree with the critics. The Zimmerman house is an example of interesting, uniquely California architecture.
He’s replacing it with a McMansion.
But if the house was to be protected, then that needed to be settled when it changed hands. I agree that I hate to see mid-century structures disappear, but I hate a lot of things I can't control.
My home was built in 1958 (old is old) and I wish I could afford to tear it down and build my kind of home.
I know someone that bought the home next to them and tore both homes down in order to build a much larger home along the coast in SoCal and the bigger problem is the headache. Took 2 years and went way over budget. Had to pay off the Coastal Commission (they take bribes to speed up the process). After all was done the person said it wasn't worth it. When they look at the home they remember all the headaches and the 2 years of renting a house while waiting for their dream home.
Probably best to build an electric fence to keep the protestors out or they may have to rebuild their home a third time.
Mid-modern is the residential version of brutalism.
You couldn't be more wrong.
The Lord Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose again the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4 KJV). Jesus shed His blood for our sins (Colossians 1:14 KJV). We are saved by grace through faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV). Only Jesus saves from hell

There's an idea.
Plenty of beautiful old historical homes have been torn down to build these eyesores in the first place. What goes around comes around.
My question is why the hell is he buying ANYTHING in California!?
There is something to the more minimalist impulse of modern design, but there is no need to be maximally minimalistic.
If there was just cause to protect the home it should have been on a historical registry already.
But if he is smart he would tell them "Hey, I'm the type who is willing to deal. If you want to save the home you can buy it off me... For twice what I paid. The value went up the moment you told me it was something rare to be protected."
Mistake 1 Buying a house in Brentwood CA.
I wish my mom hadn't sold our house there back in '73. I think it went for $75K.
