Warhammer: The Old World 500 Point Battle Report - Night Goblins vs Beastmen Brayherds

- It was bound to happen eventually. Having put it off as long as I could I got the rulebooks, made the adapter movement trays, wrote some army lists and finally scheduled my first game of Warhammer: The Old World.
And in keeping with the hallmark of the channel, we are playing a tiny 500 point pitched battle. I actually created seven different lists and let my opponent randomly pick one. He drew the Orcs & Goblin Tribes, specifically the Sylvanian themed Night Goblins.
And facing Mr. Grimley and Da Kourt of da Grave Choppas will be my opponent's Beastmen Brayherds, led by the menacing Minotaur Gorbull.
So see what two brand new players do with armies that would get lost inside a normal sized game. And leave a comment below if you have any questions, observations or concerns.
100% agree the smaller games have a certain charm to them, especially around 500pts. Also agree old world has some mechanics that work well for this. Always enjoy seeing your forces for games like this! Our crew just started the dive into the old world as well and we have been having fun so far
That’s great. If it’s working for your group hopefully it will work for ours as well.
Really really like this style of battle report and a small 500 point game looks like fun, will have to give it a try.
Thanks. I recommend them. I’ve played four of these games so far and most of them were very back-and-forth fun games.
Great battle report Gashbad.
I would recommend the Border Patrol Rules from WD 285. They’re available for free online.
Border Patrol puts additional limits on what unit types you can take: 1 special OR 1 rare and no BSB’s.
I have found it a great way to learn the rules.
That was a crazy game! Absolutely stellar battle report, just good narration and I learnt a lot (will probably forget close order regardless, but oh well). Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. I was very impressed by the back-and-forth in this game. I hope that’s what Old World is like, ‘cause I sometimes watch videos for games I’m interested in, and if too many of them are super one-sided I usually figure the game is not for me.
Wonderful fun! Thanks for posting this battle report!
Thanks, and you are welcome.
Ah nice! I am watching this as I FINALLY bought a box of AoS Fanatics - for TOW use.. ;)
Excellent. I never thought I’d have to paint more fanatics, but there I was making my army list thinking, “Why don’t I have any fanatics for that spear unit?”
This is so awesome! I’ve also only played 500 points in the old world and found it to be a really great level. Of course, I also forgot at least a dozen rules… including close order. Next time though, perhaps I’ll get it right. Hope we can see more of these games!
Yeah, I also just found out Fanatics can die on doubles when they are released, which could have killed one of my guys in this game. Oh well.
Night Goblins as an army are overall in a pretty good place, but still need some magic support. If you had brought even a level 1 caster with Itchy Nuisance to decrease the toughness of whatever the archers shot at, this would have been a vastly different game. Still awesome battle report!
Yeah, I think that would have would have been a good alternative to the bsb. I do have magic in some of the other 500 point lists. Hopefully I’ll get to try it out.
@@dmgashbad4908 I can't wait to see it in future battle reports.
I love your 500-point games! If only you could get your points worth from the archers.
Ogres next, please 🙏
Well, the Fanatics from the archer unit made their points.
We’ll see about the Ogres. I’m going to let my opponent randomly pick again. No Mournfang in small games anymore, so I won’t have that crutch.
Great game, can't wait for more of these 👍
I should get the second game up early next week, and hopefully play some more games around the same time.
looking forward to the next! and i almost never watch battle reports
I take that as a huge compliment. Thanks.
Fun video and love the night gobbos…why didn’t you issue a challenge against the gors charge?
I thought about it, but I was stupidly confident the Night Goblins would be ok, and thought the Warboss would be better off reducing the Gor’s numbers. I did start devoting a single attack to the champion, but I never did kill him.
@@dmgashbad4908 I’ve not played the new rules yet, so take this with a grain of salt. Night Goblins win combats by nets, challenges, and static combat res.
Any wounds they do are bonus.
Seeing small units reminded me of 4th ed WHFB which I started with 😂
4th ed? That takes me back. Was that the edition where all units had a minimum size of five? That was pretty much where I started, as I only played like two of three games of third edition.
@@dmgashbad4908 nah you could have units of 20 depending on points but most were between 10 to 20 with a few exceptions where you would have 5 ie rat ogres or some undead units - Wights being one I think.
Hey, I am a WH3 total war modder and I intend to fix balance issues of the current computer game and I want it to reflect the tabletop (not lore) as accurately as possible. Seeing as you seem to play a lot of tabletop matches I'd love if you'd share your personal opinion on the subject. If it's not too much trouble I'd love if you could make a tier list of average performance for each race categorized after infantry, cavalry, monster, artillery, archery, gunpowder and magic. I already have my own list but I want to make sure it matches up as accurately as possible.
Do you mean for Warhammer 8th or Old World? I really don’t have enough experience with Old World to attempt a ranking. I’m not even sure I do with 8th.
@@dmgashbad4908 The game is based on 8th edition so that would be the best reference.
Do love smaller games myself much more manageable and feels more personal with the models.
I agree. Not only that, but so far the games seem to be avoiding some of the problems I’ve seen in larger games online, like non-games where both players refuse to advance or engage, gunline massacres or games where a giant monster or three rampages through the opposing army. It may have more to do with what armies we are taking or a generally low-stakes attitude to throwing our forces forward, though. But that 1000 point mark does cap a lot of the more powerful stuff.
Agreed on small games, it is fun!
Absolutely. I’ve got another one to report on and hopefully I can play some more soon.
Great game! I think fanatics can be sent out in both sides command phase.... based on watching UA-cam only....?
You are correct. I was not aware of that. That makes them really good since you can bomb as disposable unit forward and release them in the opponent’s command phase before they can do anything about it.
how long do those 500pts games take?
Not very long. I think it’s usually less than an hour, not including setup.
I see Beastmen or Brayherd, I click on the video.
‘Cause they’re the GOAT (pause for laughter, takes bow).
My first game will be 500 points. I have had a lot of fun on sixth at 500 points game.
As in sixth edition? Yeah, sixth edition had great support for small games. I’ll be playing a sixth edition Warhammer Skirmish scenario with my son this weekend. Good luck with your first game of Old World!
So... goblins only as a list kinda sucks. Duly noted.
Well, it’s a poor craftsman who blames his tools, and a general should always take responsibility for what happens… but in this case you are absolutely right! It was all the fault of my wretched underlings!
