    I played flute at a beach wedding and I couldn’t face the alter because the wind kept blowing into my instrument and completely killing the sound. And don’t get me started on my music stand; it was trying to fulfil its dream of being a kite.

      Um...ANY sound outside will get eaten. This is on YOU to know that and warn them. =experience. :)
      You have to allow for that in the first place. If it were a PA, you'll need twice the power to do the same thing.
      You CAN invest in a very small PA if you have a few hundred. Try an Epiphone 2 channel Acoustic Reagent. It's one small box. Have not tried it on flute. Has a vocal channel and 1 instrument channel.

    So I have a horror story from my friend (we’re flautists) so she was hired for a gig with four violinist, two cellists and one violists. When she got there they gave them the music. It was canon in d. There was no flute part. They had to play it on repeat for the whole of the wedding with four breaks only. If she wasn’t ‘playing they got mad at her and said they wouldn’t pay her at all, so she had to mime playing the entire time!

      The flute could have played the part of the first violin, or for a Pachelbel's Canon, the second entrance group. It would have been in a familiar clef and key, and would have been the easily recognizeable melody part that most people know. That likely would have been better than mieming.

    I was playing a wedding once in a quartet. The first violin who was also organizing the quartet could see the aisle and she said she'd tell us when we needed to stop playing. So, we start playing some piece and at some point, both her and the second violin stop playing and put their instruments down. The viola and I noticed they stopped playing and did the same. Ooops...it turns out the first and second violin just had several few measures of rests. Guess we should have discussed the official stop playing signal.

    14) When you’re stuck in a room with 11 Uilleann pipe players (imagine the Bagpipes, but Galician), and you’re a sad bass player who is almost able to find the key, but you can’t quite get there, because there’s random measures of 3/8 and 5/8 thrown in so you wind up focusing on rhythm more than harmony and you want to die.

    So... out of curiosity, if I were to ever hire a musician or group of musicians to play at a wedding or other event, what would be the OPTIMAL and LEAST SACRILEGIOUS set of courtesies?
    1+2) Reminding your musicians via text or call the day before the event or something would help mitigate forgetting the dress code and stand, so I would assume a day-before-rundown is something gig musicians would appreciate.
    3) As for playing the same music over and over again... is it discourteous to ask the professional on their opinion for what would sound appropriate for the event, or is that putting too much work on them? Or, at least would it be discourteous, as someone who is not familiar with the pain of Canon in D, to ask for the "Omfg I will shoot myself If I have to play ANY of these songs ONE MORE TIME" List so they can be avoided? Or would it just be better for the organizer to do as much research completely on their own as they can, even if they have no musical background?
    4+5) As for not knowing when to start and stop, I think in most cases, that should be on the organizer (?). If they want a coherent stop-start experience, this should be decided by the organizer beforehand, explained thoroughly, aided by cues and signals if necessary, and gone over during the day-before-rundown.
    6) ... I don't know how to help with forgetting repeats. Burn some aromatic rosin in your Ling Ling shrine and pray-ctice?
    7+8+9) I hope to god I don't ever have to be the head of an event where my staff have to endure humiliating torture like dealing with drunk people or socializing with my shitty friends or relatives. Would a ping/panic button that discreetly alerted the organizer, help with situations like this? It could even be decided beforehand what kind of button it is, like a "we're being bothered, get them away-button" or the "nope, this is too much we outie-button". Or would some honest, "We're apologizing beforehand, ganbatte and playing F to pay respects" be a better approach? I know everyone is different, but I'm curious which would be better for you, or if neither of those are right.
    10) Hmm. A set list. Having a predetermined roster of songs with the organizers seal of approval would be a great excuse to get weird requests off your back. maybe you guys should just print a list of those "Top 10 Overplayed Classical Pieces" with a fancy illegible signature at the bottom and carry it with you to gigs so if anyone tries this shit you can just whip it out and be like, "Sorry m8, boss' orders. Now FahckoUF."
    11) I will wear a name-tag or try to meet with you in person beforehand. Easy.
    12) ...I provide rocks? Some kind of paperweight...? Just say fuck outdoor events altogether...? Yeah, that last one sounds nice. Air conditioning is sexy.
    13) Pre-organized binder of the expected sheet music given to each musician with a table of contents on the front for reference? Whatever makes this easiest on you guys, if it'll help I'll probably try to accommodate.
    14) ... Make the expected to be loud times break times? another button but this one is a "we literally cant hear ourselves think, nonetheless play rn" warning button? just saying screw it and giving the band express permission to chill if they cant hear anything? I don't know how ambiance works. (.-.)
    15+16) I will try my absolute damnedest to only request things of musicians that I have already found sheet music for and all of this will go in the pre-organized binder with table of contents which will be also gone over during the day-before-bREAK d o w n.
    I don't know how much of this sound ridiculous, but I hope most of it would help, hypothetically.

    • @Aristowi
      @Aristowi 4 роки тому +83

      It's inevitable. You have the right to ask for the most famous classical pieces, but that doesn't make the musicians feel any good about it since they have played them hundreds of times. In fact, all these things, the drunks, the weird requests, the guy telling stories about playing instruments, that's all nice, poeple are not used to be among musicians and their curiosity is understandable, it's just that it happens a lot to musicians and it's not a good experience, after the tenth time it's just annoying, but musicians will be polite and show interest to your stories and will try to fulfill your requests. Anyway gigs will always be the same, go ahead and ask for Canon in D for your wedding if you want, it's a beautiful piece and you are paying for it.

    • @maxdonaldson861
      @maxdonaldson861 4 роки тому +57

      Some of these ideas would probably be great to help out gig musicians, but some of these scenarios are ultimately the responsibility of the musician, and wearing the wrong dress code is a mistake you will only ever make once. But it would be a godsend for a musician to have an organiser who really cared about the musicians and made an effort to make their job a little easier with all these small things.

    • @vay5540
      @vay5540 4 роки тому +32

      Some of these are a bit unnecessary, it’ll probably be really stressful for an organizer to worry about all these things at once, but I do agree with a few of them. You should probably ask for pieces that already have sheet music ready, asking the musician’s opinion might be good, but in the end the music is always your choice, and maybe prepare a tent or something in case of weather issues. Honestly outdoor event kinda suck anyway sooo.

So, all of us in the quartet started playing a rather bombastic Bridal March while everyone else was bowing their heads in reverence.

    I got married and made sure most of my songs weren't tedious for the musicians lol. Groom entered to the Force theme, I came in to Yellow, and the 1 "boring" one would be the book of love when we signed the contract but it isn't a well known song in my country, they didn't even know it so they had to learn it. I basically let them play anything they wanted while the guests were waiting. They had a nice spot in the shade of a big tree so they wouldn't get hot. The only weird request, which I don't think was a big problem for the violinist, was I asked her to use my father's 18th century violin. He passed away years ago and having his violin playing was a way to have him with me as I walked to the altar. I only had them for the 40 minute ceremony, as I wanted a dj for the rest, but they were invited to stay for the reception as well. I hope my musicians had a nice time.

    I was in a chapel choir for 5 years. Every single year, there were 3 carol services. The pieces were NEVER IN ORDER!!! On my 5th and final year where I was asked to 'just deal with it' I sneaked into the chapel (it was a posh school) and rearranged all 70 odd folders to house the correct repertoire in the order that they were sung in. I had done it 12 times by now, so I knew the order. Everyone came into practice the next day ( three working days before the concert) and the practice gained half a bloody hour because people didn't have to filter through shed loads of paper to find the song they had to sing.
    Just so you know, I changed the orchestra scores as well. I'm not a monster...
    But yeah, pain in the ass.
    Another thing, because if you've made it this far you're either incredibly bored or really interested. I used to play piano for 'gigs' I call them 'gigs' because I would just sit down at a free piano hall at an event and start playing, and because I wasn't shit, or playing fucking Fur Elise, they just let me stay. I cannot count how many times I've had problem 7 through 10. They just really hit home with me...
    'Do you know any Elton John?'
    'I used to play the piano. I got to grade 2 before I quit though'
    'You're so talented' (I hate that word. I worked my arse off for 19 years to get to where I am today...)
    The worst of all was people gesturing at me while glancing or referencing their own children saying things like 'Why can't you be like that?' and 'See, this is where you'd be if you practiced!'
    That was horrible.
    *And scene*

    4:19 I was playing something at an orchestra concert in my school (in a gym), and the air conditioning there was blowing the music off of everyone’s stands.
    That was fun.

    When I was at Uni I was the clarinet part of a flute, clarinet, and bassoon trio. The flautist was the one who created the trio and organised everything. We'd rehearse together and do some busking. The flautist got us a "real" gig to play at an art gallery exhibition, so we all turned up on time. He always kept all our music - and left it at home. The only music we had were two movements from Handel's Water Music suite. So that's what we played - over and over and over again.

    Oh this made me chuckle guys. I've suffered through all of those. Totally agree with the previous comment too, & been hired to play organ or piano only to find an old keyboard, untuned piano, or that the organ's not been serviced in years. The joys (stress) of gigging!

    I have been a gigging rock/funk musician and the weirdness runs across the board… I would love being able to compare horror stories with some classical musicians… I think it would be hysterical and enlightening… 😂
